I spent most of my life dealing with alcohol addiction. When this song came out, it really hit home. I know it's about heroin, but it's still one of those songs that really hit home. I've been sober a few years now. It's never easy, especially with mental health issues. But I'm still alive and kicking.
Love what you wrote and congratulations on your sobriety 👏👏 I didn't know this song was about heroin but addiction and mental health will always be prevalent..this song hits home for sure

I remember the first time listening to this on the radio. I begged my mom to buy this CD for me. 2 weeks later she finally gave in. 90's music will always be the best
You cant really categorize a certain decade as THE BEST. Thats your opinion. THE 90s had HORRIBLE music too. I choose to broaden my horizons and enjoy ALL music that I love from any time.
Amazing how you can hear song and it bring back so many memories. The transcending power of music. I remember not telling some of my friends about the music I like, as a young black male, for fear of them saying "I wanted to be white." Interesting how life turns out.
I grew up in the 'HOOD!!' in the '80s and I was the only person in my class that preferred rock and heavy metal to rap and R&B, and all of my friends laughed at and teased me for it (and still do) but I didn't care at all!! I listened to the music I liked without apology to anyone.
When somebody asks me who my favorite band of all time is, I simply reply..Goo Goo Dolls...Their music is part of my upbringing in the 90's and early 2000's and has gotten me through many many hard times in my life...I love you all!!! You can do anything you set your heart and mind to..Never give up..You are stronger than you could ever imagine...Reach inside and pull that stuff out...The secret has been inside of YOU all along.
Ok, so just for shits & giggles, I'm gonna have y'all read ↑this comment↑ again. But first, close your eyes a sec and imagine that this time as you're reading it, you also happen to be smuggling a balloon full of dope- y'know, like black tar heroin (one could even say it's, oh I dunno, a "Black Balloon," perhaps)-across the border in your.. well.. err.. Inside you. Yeah. Ok, now pop back up and reread OP's comment for me. The last little bits there, in particular. Then meet me back here. Kay? Have fun 👍 Alright, you back? Great! Now, not only are you just that little bit closer to the song, but you're also hopefully laughing, more than a little bit uncomfortable, or all of the above! Isn't the internet fun? You're welcome.. or I'm sorry. Whichever.
Same here! The Goo Goo dolls will always be my favorite band of all time. Mega fan, ever since Superstar Car Wash. Johnny just knows exactly how to pull right at my heart strings!
Extremely powerful song IMO. Six years in the service; suffice it to say I have a lot of stressful days. Find solace where you can. Music is a really good tool. Cheers.
This song is so powerful. Addiction is such a horrible force to fight and win over. The words are simply fantastic and having lived with this monster daily it really hits home.

Little did we know the nice sounding songs like these we loved as kids were about things like losing a girl you loved to a heroin addiction. Good thing our parents didn't listen too closely, would have missed out on alot of third eye blind as well.
This song came out during a huge turning point in my life. A positive turning point. I'll always equate this song with 1999 and every time I hear it, I'll always smile.
Good for you, I hope everything's going well. It's crazy how music is like a time travel machine, you hear a song and boom in your mind you're right back to the place and time you were listening to it years and years ago.
Recovery is my world...this song, lyrics, vocals, does more healing than any other form of so called 'treatment' that I've experienced over the years. Keeping the faith, strength, love & light.
This song still gets me. So cool how I can remember every word after all these years of not hearing it. Now I just have to remember where I left my keys. Cheers to you! Thank you.
This sound reminds me of when I was 16 years old (33 now) studying for my exams and thinking about my future with endless possibilities. Some of my dreams came through. It makes me feel positive yet emotional. I think of my parents a lot, makes me sad to think of life without them. I am now happily married with a baby boy. This song still does it for me.
Oh man, this really brings back memories!! Just hearing those first few notes makes me feel something I can't explain, maybe it's just strong nostalgia haha. I really miss those days!
Being a teenager in the late 90s was perfect. That's when I got my first car and when I finally had control of the radio. GGD was coming thru the speakers on many rides !!
To this day the band is so underrated, but I promise their music will stand the test of time. The Goo Goo Dolls are just like the Beatles and Eagles, no matter where you drop a record player needle on their album the song will be soul moving.
The final lyrics are so painful.. if you’ve ever tried to save a loved one from themselves, you just hope that one day they will look back and understand… what a wonderful, poignant, tragically beautiful song.
I miss the 90's, things were so simple and everyone didn't hate each other because of different political views. No cell phones or social media, just great music and great times with friends.

Just saw them in Kansas City. Amazing show with Blue October opening for them. Loved hearing this song live. To me, it reaches into the depths of your soul.
Angels fall without you there. I go on as you get colder....Such a tale of a lost loved one lost in drugs...you wish you could help them but they don't even recognize your effforts
It's this kind of music that Gives you hope, that makes your feel that little bit of happy when your soul is sad. (Therapy) Just put your head phones on and go for a walk. Makes me miss Colorado
The simplicity in Johns lyrics as he relates to the seller about heroin use, and the symbolism he uses to describe the womans emotional state but also how she will do anything for another hit, is so breathtakingly accurate, that it's actually so incredibly beautiful. This song is an absolute masterpiece.
This Song reminds me of a girl I loved in 99 when I was a teenager. It didn’t work out but this song bring me good memories of that summer I had with her.
Goo Goo dolls were everything back in the day. Every time I hear slide, iris, black balloon etc it takes me right back to my teen years in the late 90s to early 2000s ish. I miss it so much. As soon as the song started playing I reimagined myself back in my room ,this song playing on the radio, laying on my bed skimming through ym, teen people and seventeen magazines, phone next to me waiting for a friend to call, TV on low while Dawson creek is playing, wearing Mudd jeans and a Tommy Hilfiger spaghetti strap tank with butterfly clips in my hair....(sigh..my has time flew by)
Wow you just described it perfectly! Exact same for me. Subscription to Seventeen and that phone was always at my side. Late at night I’d have my bf call at an exact time so I could answer it super fast before it even finished the first ring! So my mom wouldn’t wake up and lecture me. Lol 😂 the 90’s were a simpler time. When kids played outside and we rode our bikes everywhere. No social media!! I miss it…
It takes a much greater strength and courage to turn away from something once you're trapped in it than it does to avoid it. Getting clean doesn't simply mean not using. It means fighting through withdrawals, sickness, shakes, and hallucinations, among other things. It means giving up everything you've built your life around; the people, the places, the activities, EVERYTHING. It means entirely redefining yourself, and your relationships with the people around you. It takes great dedication.
Heroin addiction is no fun, I was an addict when this song was released- who wants to be the dead girl in the lyrics? Not me, I got clean. I Love the Goo Goo Dolls.
As far as I'm concerned he is one of the best songwriters of his generation. He never got the credit that he should have. I think he s in the same league as Billy Corgan, great band from Buffalo who had to work their asses off. If they're not voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that's a biggest rip-off ever, because they certainly deserve to be there.
The childhood nostalgia i feel from this song is so emotional. I had no idea what it was about then but after losing a friend to heroin a few years ago it hits different. Also even if you don’t like this band it cannot be denied this is one of the most iconic albums of the 90’s.
Me and my best friend last listened to this out looking to the stars after a late night out for cards (penochle) in the 90s, what a different, and better place it was, RIP Michale
Rip to your friend. It sure was. But it had its wars and problems. We were just too young maybe to realize the problems of the world. God bless us everyone ❤
@@frankieL1882 Thank you for the very wise and charitable comment, we tend to have rose colored glasses on when we are in our childhood, but it was a good time for the USA in general :)

Just hearing that opening rift and those memories come flooding back. Beautifully written and composed song , never gets old after listening to it a million times.
By far one of the best guitar harmonic riffs ever made. Also one of the greatest intro guitar riffs ever written. Just realized this song finishes on that same harmonic riff. Unbelievable. Doesn't get much better than that. This song deserves SO much more than 15 million views. Come on ppl!!!
this song will always have a special meaning to me. I knew someone who was very special to me...she overdosed on heroine, I fell asleep right beside her....I woke up, but she remained asleep :( Rest in Peace, Crystal. you are missed every single day.
The young teens fucking around with Oxycodone and then ending up not aware of the withdrawals and becoming addicted and leading to Heroin has been going on for over 15 years and only getting worse, its insane watching 15-16 year olds loosing their souls and their lives at such a innocent age, sending them on a path of torture and pain and exhaustion until they overdose or hopefully get clean. Its not even remotely being addressed as much as it should be...its beyond a epidemic now. Most of these kids though are the result of parental neglect or parents whom use drugs and aren't emotionally available. People...if you're an addict...do not have kids until you are absolutely certain you're clean and free and available for life with Children. End the cycle.
Saw them live for my birthday couple weeks ago and I sung my heart out to this song! Addiction runs in my family, sadly and hearing such a beautiful masterpiece of letting it go had me in such a choke hold😭

One of those songs when I hear it, it really brings me back to the 90's. I was teenager then. Really sucks, we'll never get our 90's back. We can always tell the younger generations about it, but it was the last decade of innocence. September 11th, 2001 truly changed our world forever.

Johnny Rzeznik and The Dolls are quintessential 90's rock. Slide, Black Balloon, Iris, Broadway and Name will live on forever and those songs will always be played somewhere on the planet
all those on the same album too! good front to back album
You're right dude! This songs will living forever.
Sympathy is pretty good too
This album was so incredible. It's rare that you get one so good.
Jagged little pill is another album without any fault every song is gold just like this one
I can't agree more! Jewel's album, Pieces of You comes in a close second!
So many gems on the whole album: black balloon, slide, and iris are my favorites though
I will never understand someone’s pain with drugs, but will always give a helping hand. I commend all of those who’ve reached sobriety. For those who struggled, I’m rooting for you
I spent most of my life dealing with alcohol addiction.
Hey, I hope you are doing well, and that you continue your journey of healing and deliverance. Never forget that despite the hard times, we can still see light if we look in the right direction. I wish all the best for you 🙏
Wishing you the best

Congratulations on your sobriety. I'm coming up on 34 years of sobriety, came from a family of alcoholics. Best regards to you.
These guys have been my favorite band since I was 8 yrs old in now 35!!
This man was my savior as an abused teenage girl. His music literally saved my life starting with the album Superstar Car Wash. Thank you John.
Thank you for this. As a recovering heroin addict, this is reality. This is addiction. It’s not glamours or fun.. it’s dark and sad. Thank you!
I hope you strong and well. God bless you
I hope you are doing wonderful, and the chapter has been closed and sealed forever!
Take care and stay safe and healthy!
"Swallowed the light from the sun inside your room" reminds me of the countless days I spent laying in the dark withdrawing. Not sleeping not doing anything just laying in the bed in the complete dark in my room in the middle of the day.

I remember the first time listening to this on the radio. I begged my mom to buy this CD for me. 2 weeks later she finally gave in. 90's music will always be the best
90s music really is the best
You cant really categorize a certain decade as THE BEST. Thats your opinion. THE 90s had HORRIBLE music too.
I choose to broaden my horizons and enjoy ALL music that I love from any time.
Chrissy Wicked yesss! What makes it so amazing per se, is the nostalgia
Chrissy Wicked yesss! What makes it so amazing per se, is the nostalgia
Amazing how you can hear song and it bring back so many memories. The transcending power of music. I remember not telling some of my friends about the music I like, as a young black male, for fear of them saying "I wanted to be white." Interesting how life turns out.
***** So very true, Mimi. You do the same. I wish you all the blessings life has to offer.
Thanks, Anthony.
im Mexican, i live here in Mexico and i feel so different than the rest of my Mexican people because my music is not "Mexican".
Ricardo Viramontes I know what you mean. It is hard to stand out in a world that is telling you should be like everybody else.
Kay? Have fun 👍
Alright, you back? Great! Now, not only are you just that little bit closer to the song, but you're also hopefully laughing, more than a little bit uncomfortable, or all of the above! Isn't the internet fun?
You're welcome.. or I'm sorry. Whichever.
Yes! Goo goo dolls brings back so many memories
Thank you mizzou! Those are enchanting words that make a true difference in this world!!!!
Same here! The Goo Goo dolls will always be my favorite band of all time. Mega fan, ever since Superstar Car Wash. Johnny just knows exactly how to pull right at my heart strings!
Been one of my favourites for a long time and this song has been my favourite song for 7 years now since discovering it
I listen to this song every morning I walk to school. It's beautiful and for some reason helps with my depression.
Don't you just love when songs have that therapeutic feeling? It helped with my depression as well.
+Diana Torres It helps my poor soul aswell..
Extremely powerful song IMO. Six years in the service; suffice it to say I have a lot of stressful days. Find solace where you can. Music is a really good tool. Cheers.
Hopefully you get quickly out of your depression. I love this song, it gives me a feeling of new hope...
I Love 'better days' by Goo goo as well. I was teary eyed when the movie New Years Eve played the song

Yeahhh. The MTV show was the only entertainment that old days.
Nice!!!

Years later I hear this and still gives me the chills like the first time I heard it.
Good times.
Definitely good times
And Lullaby- Shawn Mullins. 🥺 Life was good. Disney movie playing on a Friday night... The smell of lightning bugs. The simplicity. I miss it.

May this song give addicts the strength to recover . Recovery is possible !
Yes I agree 💯👍🏍️

I love this song. There’s something so sentimental...so ominous and mysterious about it all at the same time
It is about his girlfriend and her heroine addiction.

To this day the band is so underrated, but I promise their music will stand the test of time.

Damn Sure Does 😢

Heroin addiction is no fun, I was an addict when this song was released- who wants to be the dead girl in the lyrics? Not me, I got clean. I Love the Goo Goo Dolls.

This song is actually about my mom about her heroin addiction
As far as I'm concerned he is one of the best songwriters of his generation. He never got the credit that he should have. I think he s in the same league as Billy Corgan, great band from Buffalo who had to work their asses off. If they're not voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that's a biggest rip-off ever, because they certainly deserve to be there.

Just hearing that opening rift and those memories come flooding back. Beautifully written and composed song , never gets old after listening to it a million times.
By far one of the best guitar harmonic riffs ever made. Also one of the greatest intro guitar riffs ever written.

Rest in Peace, Crystal. you are missed every single day.
Chris Yarborough so sorry for your loss
Sorry brotha
I was in active addiction for 25 years been clean 8 and thank god everyday I wake up!
