      My guy 37 mpg absolutely sucks after downsizing from a Corolla at such a day and age, Toyota be throttlin mpg ATM. Honda cranked out 50mpg highway with their 1989-95 civics but a Yaris 40 years later can pull any more than 37? On top of that, nobody ever saw actual improvements on fuel economy when the Atkinson cycle came out; petroleum companies are absolutely pulling some strings here.

    My wife and I had a 2008 Yaris 4 door, we purchased it new and kept it for 10 years. Used it for long trips twice a year from Arizona to the Mid West and Deep South plus daily driving. Replaced the tires twice and battery once. We did nothing to it other than routine maintenance. Sold it in 2018 with over 104,000 miles on it and bought a new Toyota Camry XLE. The fellow we sold it to is still driving it daily. It was our 3rd. Toyota. I have owned 4 and kept them all for years and many miles with those kinds of results.

    The Yaris has been about in Europe for over twenty years in on shape or another, and they are brilliant.
    They have strong, reliable, dependable mechanicals with good fuel economy, magnificent build quality and ease of service.
    Most of the European cars will be manual (or stick shift) transmission and are driven by people of all ages from driving instructors to seniors and as a used buy, they are always well looked after well maintained.

      It's cars like these plus the Mazda 2 and Suzuki Swift that we should be promoting, Cars that sip fuel, can easily be driven in towns or on long journeys and are reliable. The average car has one or two occupants most of the time. Sure there are big families and drivers that actually need big cars but most households should have one of these as an alternative.

    • @smileychess
      @smileychess 6 місяців тому +2

      @@scooterbob4432 - I suspect a big part of it is that most driving schools now only teach in automatic cars. I'm a perfect example: Not once was I taught to drive a manual transmission, and as an adult it has never come up because of how common automatics are. I understand how it works, but you wouldn't want me in your car the first time I try manual shifting.

    Scotty I tell you my Toyota story: My 2005 Echo(replaced by Yaris later years) served my family til today (2023) with only problem of front shocks leaked and I got them replaced. The original battery died on Dec-31-2018 and was replaced. No one believed this as this was a fairy tale that a car battery can last 13 yrs. But I know it is true as I replaced the battery myself and saw those Japanese wordings on the wall/top of the battery! I live in Canada so sub-zero(C) starting in winter is common. You are right the auto-transmission is lagging and far from zippy to drive but it didn't give me headaches like the Nissan Sentra before it!

    My family owns a 1999 Toyota Yaris with the 1.0 engine (J Vin number so "made in Japan") which we keep as a backup in case any of our main cars are in the garage or broken down, my younger brother is currently driving it and to say he drives it hard would be an understatement, he regurlary drives it near the red line and has put 40k miles on it in the last 2 years doing deliveries, he changed the oil after a 20k interval once, anyways I sat in it the other day and let me tell you that engine was running so sweet I was quite amazed as I expected it to be worn down considering how my brother is so careless with it, the engine has 150k miles on it and its spent 90 percent of its life doing city driving. Just a couple of months ago he did a 400 mile round trip on the motorway/highway with it, I spent about a year doing 60 miles every day on the motorway it never skipped a beat, the interior is perfect no rattles or anything, man that thing is built extremely, extremely well

    I have a 1.0 SOL 1999 and 1.5 hybrid 2017 since new, 143 and 23 Kmls, only normal services. The hybrid has done 50 mls/g in 6 years, mostly short trimps and sometimes very harsh conditions during winter time.

      I know a man in his 70's who still has every car he's ever owned. I've never seen the collection but, judging from all the other old junk in his holiday home in Whistler, I believe him.
      I'm his cleaner. He decided to get rid of some of his old junk and asked me if I wanted any of his old electronics. Jeez, the remote control was the size of a shoe box. No thanks.

    I bought my manual transmission 2006 brand-new and put 110k miles in 2 years, doing delivery. On a good day, I'd easily go past 110mph, but limiter would kicked in. It'll get 37mpg while zooming around the highway at 100mph. That double overhead cam engine is a highway gem.

    I've long had the same argument for my 2008 Mazda3 I Sport. 5sp, with fully independent suspension(not torsion beam)and 4 wheel disc brakes. With nothing more than suspension and brake mods the car is very, very fun and peppy enough to whip in and out of Central Fl traffic!

    Have a 2001 and 2004 Echo (in the US before 2007 the Yaris was named Echo) with that 1NZ-FE engine. Both are automatic sedans made in Japan. I am the third owner for both. The 2004 (has about 170000 miles) which was used has a taxi by the second owner and has 14 in. tires really zippy. When the traffic light changes it leaves most cars way behind. The 2001 (has about 150000 miles) uses 15 in. tires and is not that zippy. They fit really good in narrow parking spaces.
