    Scotty I have a 2003 Toyota Sequoia with 348k on it and I'm the original owner. It is by far the best buying decision I have ever made. Twenty-five years ago I would have never bought a Japanese car. The last America I owned was a 99 Grand Cherokee with the inline 6, nice engine but the rest of the mechanicals on that car were total crap. After six years of ownership it was an endless money pit. I even went to work at a dealer that sold the newer versions of that car, what a nightmare. My wife driven the Sequoia for 10 years before I got to use it regularly. Scotty, I must say it's a shame that domestic car companies are so short sighted and do not respect the customer by offering a good product that last. The Japanese has taken years to build a quality reputation for which Honda and Toyota continue today. Thank you for your good work and informative videos.

    I have owned several cars in my lifetime at 73. Still have 16 of them. But I have found out that it isn't always a car manufacturer that have problems with their vehicles. I believe 60%-70% of the time, or more, that it's how the owners maintain and how they drive their cars, that determines how trouble free a car will be.

      Having an engine misfire for too long will destroy catalytic converters

    • @ViolentMLG
      @ViolentMLG 2 роки тому +37

      I think the question is less about how reliable is a car when its maintained, and more about how reliable is a car when its neglected.
      Buying used, you can't know 100%, most also don't want to have to spend thousands maintaining a car, as most people buying economy cars truthfully can barely afford the cars they own, nor do they know what to even do with cars.
      You also just have simple design issues and quality control issues that lack with some brands, and you can't 'maintain' that.
      Case and point, Cadillac's old Northstar engines, until 06, they were complete garbage, and even AFTER 06 they were blowing headgaskets, more rarely and prematurely under warranty, but still happened.
      Quality control also plays a factor, what is the likelihood your car was built correctly and up to a standard? Toyota/Honda have higher QC, therefore, they have a higher standard, therefore, you're less likely to get a 'bad' car.
      Though I generally agree, I think the Toyota tax, especially right now, is absurd, 20 year old Toyota's going for 5K-6K, its not worth it, all cars break, even Toyota's, even if its less likely.

    • @Ehadassa62
      @Ehadassa62 2 роки тому +4

      I do agree with what you said....but: can I ask you were do you maintain your cars? do you go to the dealership or to a shop? I love our Subaru Foresters. I have a '99, hubs has a 2000. Both are automatic and well over 200K miles, and were when we bought them used within the last 2 years. I paid $1000 for my '99; he paid $800 for his, which is even a sports model. We drive them everywhere. This is my 2nd Subaru. My first was a '98 Legacy Sport, Canadian, manual shift. I had it for about five years when it finally rusted beyond repair; sold it for the engine.
    After that I had a '98 Honda CRV and loved that baby! Unfortunately, the shop that replaced the transmission did NOT use genuine Honda fluid in it and it ruined the engine after a couple of years. But, we had it almost five years before trading it in and got $1000 on the trade.
    Way back in the day I had a '79 Toyota Celica and then an '81 Celica; both manual shift and loved them both. I was also looking for a used RAV4 when we bought my '99 Forester, but if a RAV4 had come up first, I'd have bought one.

    I think that it can sometimes depend on the model more than the make, though I’ve had Nissans of various models that were clunkers so I’m completely sour on Nissan. I currently have a Kia Forte but it’s a basic vehicle with a six speed manual transmission. It sounds like their reach may have exceeded their grasp with that Optima hybrid, but manual transmissions with simple builds tend to last longer in general, Nissans notwithstanding.

    I’m still driving my old 2000 Honda Odyssey. It’s more reliable than that 2017 Nissan Altima I had.

      You’ve got a winner my friend. Most of those Honda transmissions in the early 2000s were junk.

      I loved my odyssey, stupid things broke and tranny at 210k, but it was awesome!

      I'm looking at a sienna or a odyssey to live in. Any years you recommend for the odyssey? Toyotas are too damn expensive in the used market.

      Just rolled 188,000 on my 2003 Odyssey. Still running original timing belt, engine and transmission.

    Most reliable and actually fun to drive car I've owned was my 2005 automatic Toyota Corolla S. Bought it new. I beat the absolute piss out of it for 98K miles with no issues, like none it all. Just fluid changes, tires, rotors, and brakes. I've gone through 3 sets of tires in just a months time and same goes for the brake pads.
    2nd on the list is my current daily. 2012 Honda Fit. I absolutely love this little nugget!! My driving style on the street is completely different now that I've grown the hell up.

      Were you racing? Because that doesn’t count. If you went through three sets of tires and brakes on the road in a month, those were shitty parts.

      Dude if you're going through "3 sets of tire in just a month" you need Jesus as your tire lawyer to advise you to lay off those second hand used tires LOL.

      My 2010 Corolla LE is also a fun car to drive. I believe that the S trim has a slightly larger 2.4 litre engine whereas has the 1.8 litre with 132 hp. I love the Corolla S and SE trims. They are sportier than the LE but with plenty of aftermarket trim items available you can easily mod an LE to look more
