This is about a musician out on the road. Laying pipe. Not settling down, or looking back. He has a different girl in each town, and never the same one twice. And he’s happy with this. No sorrow or regrets.
This album "Breakfast in America" is masterpiece. The first vinyl I bought with my money. It reminds me of how good it was to live youth in the 70's and 80's. In addition to the two songs that have already reacted, there are the classics "Take the long way home" and "Breakfast in America". Other classics are "Dreamer", Give a Little Bit", Hide in you shell", It's raining again" and "Bloody Well Right"
Bro's, you'll love their "Take The Long Way Home", "Give A Little Bit" and "Dreamer"!!! Melodies, solos, great sounds all around with these guys! edit- Great job on the 3 possible meanings of the song!
I'm so glad you mentioned Dreamer, that's a great song. The thing is, in the UK when I listened to music on the radio, I would really like the songs, but not always know who the bands were! However I think one of my favourites is Give a Little Bit, I really like that one!
This song is so well produced. The development of the guitar is just incredible. A lot of double meanings in the lyrics - you got it! "Bloody Well Right" is another well known hit. Thanks for your hard work guys !!
That break into the choppy chords leading into the outtro is capable of STILL giving me chills after approximately 1,500 listens. Great album, along with the 4 previous albums, magnificent.
Great lyrics are those that seem obvious on the surface but deeper can be interpreted in different ways and all can make sense. A absolute stunning song!! Great reaction too!
It's definitely my favorite Supertramp song and one of my favorite songs period. I never get tired of it! It's about the lead singer being a player and ditching girls he has one night stands with at each stop on the tour. Check out Take the Long Way Home and Give a Little Bit by them.
I totally agree...from now on. sister moonshine, just another nervous wreck, just a normal day, bonnie, summer romance, pony express, forever, casual conversations, rudy. asylum. poor boy, the meaning etc: what an amazing back catalogue
“Even In The Quietest Moments” is a great great song that you guys would love when you’re in the mood for a dreamy, slowly building, almost trance-like vibe. It’s another song with lots of little details, that takes you on a journey. “Sister Moonshine” is another of their lesser known songs, but really great.
THANK YOU..... FINALLY, Thank you for not pausing and reacting more with body language and not only drawn out comment. This was my kind of reaction and it almost never happens.
Guys. If you look up Roger Hodgson. He left Supertramp in 1983 and went solo. He wrote many of the Supertramp songs and has performed them live all over the world along with his newer songs he wrote after leaving the band. He is still touring. He has live performances all on UA-cam. He plays piano and guitars and his voice is still amazing. Please check him out!
Supertramp is one of my all time favorite bands. One of my best friends died of leukemia in the early 80’s & he loved this band. Every time I hear Supertramp I think of Greg and I’m 61 years old now please listen to a song by them called “my kind of lady“ the saxophone work is unreal.

School is one of my favorite songs from Supertramp... the harmonica at the beginning gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it ... almost 40 years later!!
I have to agree with you about School being their best song. Even today nearly 50 years after buying the album, that song has stood the test of time better than many songs from any band.
One best albums frm 70"s. Every every song the best. It's one night stands, he goes to America Fri. UK. THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED BREAKFAST in America. Great night with Mary the Jane then a nice breakfast 😋 back to touring. Band is called Super "Tramp" 👌 🤣🤣, a gigolo joker lil' trip
Another level of music w/ Supertramp .. absolutely brilliant musicians w/ MANY great songs .. the comments are full of some terrific suggestions. I would suggest, 'Fool's Overture' .. it's an epic song that takes your ears & mind on a magical ride.
Some say Good Bye Stranger is their favorite, some Logical Song, some say "Bloody Well Right". I really like "School" and I am pretty sure you both will too.
@@AJ-wg1xv Apologies, yes, I did misunderstand, it's the only other Supertramp song they've done and I wasn't sure if you knew that! I'm sure they will be doing more. Take care now.
Thanks for hitting my all-time favourite group (just ahead of ELO) for a second time. Now you need to jump down that long, glorious rabbit hole called Supertramp. Goodby Stranger and The Logical Song are arguably their two most commercial hits, from their most commercial album (Breakfast In America (1979, not a bad tune on it) but, in my opinion, while they are both great songs, they are far from their best. Crime of the Century is their acknowledged masterpiece concept album (1974). Everything on it is fire but the opening harmonica on School is so hypnotizing and haunting. Bloody Well Right has one of the best opening electric piano pieces ever. Dreamer is a famous tune off the Crime album. My personal favourites off Crime are Hide In Your Shell and Rudy. Their albums Crisis? What Crisis? (1975, Another Man's Woman etc.), Even In the Quietest Moments (1977) and Famous Last Words (1982) are their other classic LPs especially Even in the Quietest Moments (Give A Little Bit, Babaji, From Now On, Lover Boy etc.). Please react to more Supertramp and I'll be there to hear you gush about their musicianship and social commentary lyricism.
You lucky guys. You have plenty of jewels more to enjoy ;-) try Take the long way home, Child of vision, Gone Hollywood, Fool's overture, From now on, Soapbox opera, Another man's woman, Lady, School, Asylum, Bloody well right, Asylum, Hide in your shell, Rudy, Crime of the Century... And so many more ;-)
My interpretation of this song is that he is saying googbye to another one night stand and does not want to settle down. Using the names Marfy and Jane (mostly Mary) may simply have been a coincidence (MaryJane: ie: pot). Jane was used to rhythme with the word AGAIN in the following line.
SUPERTRAMP, "GOODBYE STRANGER". Along with Steely Dan, the 70'S had two hidden gems. Who with as Time went by. Aged like a fine wine. more SUPERTRAMP, "SCHOOL", "CRIME OF THE CENTURY", "BREAKFAST IN AMERICA".
I don't know if MJ = Marajuana was a reference back in 1979 - I don't remember.. Other great songs by Supertramp - Rudy, Crime of the Century, Child of Vision
The song is about a rock star who has a bunch of one night stands then leaves them in the morning . "Goodbye Stranger, it's been nice." "Goodbye Mary, goodbye Jane. Will we ever meet again?" He's leaving numerous women behind to get back on the road.
Every single one of their songs is their best song! I love Supertramp so much! This entire album is incredible! I never really thought about the meaning of Mary and Jane. It's called so many things. I always had it pictured in my head as saying goodbye to 2 women, some they will, some they won't? As far as music is concerned, I believe you can take it any way you need to in the moment. Supertramp seems to always have been my 'go to' break-up music to make me feel better like I will fly again and all will be well again soon. I hope I'm making sense. Great reaction! You guys always make me smile!
To answer your question: Is this their best song? Some fans might think so, but imho some of their best songs are: “Fools Overture” (a nearly 11 min EPIC track), “School” and “Babaji” :)
Good call whoever requested this. I think I have this on vinyl somewhere around here. Supertramp is so great and there are a couple of videos out there that must be seen. Good review guys.
I have been fortunate enough to have seen Supertramp “The Tramp” Live 4 times. Their live shows are a spectacle and brilliant. Each member is a musical genius. Rick Davies is my favorite keyboards player and John Helliwell is favorite Sax player. He is a blast to watch live. The bass and drummer are awesome and Roger’s guitars are superb. The only live show I put above Supertramp is Pink Floyd, who I have seen 4 times.
Take the Long way Home, Dreamer, Bloody well right, It's raining again, School... A lot of great songs and all of them are like a surprising trip. But my favorite will be ever The Logical Song. I love it! Regards from Chile 🙂
The year I graduated from high school. I was a good year! :) "Take the Long Way Home," "Bloody Well Right," and "Give a Little Bit" are also great Supertramp songs.
I've heard of Supertramp and they have some great songs such as Give a Little Bit, Don't Leave Me Now and Dreamer. This song is pretty good, I really like it, I'm not as familiar with it as the other songs I mentioned but it was good to hear. Thanks so much for your reaction, guys, so good, as always. All the best.
They are all..."Best Song".... but there are favorites like... "Child Of Vision" is awesome... "Crime Of The Century"..... "School".... "Bloody Well Right".... "Asylum".... "Don't Leave Me Now"......
Listen to "Rudy", you won't be disappointed. I saw them in the '70's in Montreal where they were super popular before they made it big in the States. Crime of the Century album should be listened to in its entirety,
Supertramp is an amazing band and I have been a big fan since the seventies. Pick any song from Crime of the Century, Even in the Quietest Moments, or Breakfast in America to react to and you will be very happy.
Supertramp = one of England’s finest.
Saw them in concert back in 1983 in Austin, Texas.😎😎😎😎
This is about a musician out on the road. Laying pipe. Not settling down, or looking back. He has a different girl in each town, and never the same one twice. And he’s happy with this. No sorrow or regrets.
One of the greatest guitar outros ever put to record.
Never tire of hearing it
Absolute chills. Every time. I've been cranking that part up since 1979 when the album first came out.
It's incredible
Hodgson is such an underrated electric guitarist

I think "Give A Little Bit" is my favorite of theirs.

"BLOODY WELL RIGHT" is Incredible....!

Seconding all votes for Even In The Quietest Moments. The song and the album.
Take the long way home next 😊 great reaction. A different girl in every town. The life of a rock star on the road. Many girls, no regrets
They were great in concert! Seattle Washington! Fire🔥

"School" has the most amazing piano solo in it and really interesting harmonica at the beginning.

AWESOME GUITAR SOLO!!
The guy who's in the right is so right about everything he says about the song i can only say the right guy is right.
Amazing outro...my favorite part of the song
Supertramp is excellent, this is my favorite.
Next: School! My favourite ❤️
Any song form Supertramp is a must hear.
Take The Long Way Home is an equally great song by Supertramp.
I love their song School.
Absolute classic, probably my favourite Supertramp song.
it IS their best song, in my opinion!
This and The Logical Song are my favorite Supertramp songs. Take The Long Way Home is also a great song by Supertramp.
Such a good album, but the real “gem” track is “Child of Vision”. Their BEST song, IMO, is “School” from Crime of the Century.
I have to agree with you about School being their best song. Even today nearly 50 years after buying the album, that song has stood the test of time better than many songs from any band.
I'm partial to School also. Still enjoy their others but that for me is #1.
"child of vision" fascinates me every listen.
