It is not inherently corruption. If you believe Lobbying is corruption, than any non-profit making speeches in Congress is corruption.

Who would've guessed that unrestricting lobbying undermines democracy. Who would'vve guessed that social and economial inequality undermine democracy?
One has to come to the realization that democracy needs reform. There needs to be more transperency and measures to decrease inequality.
No matter how strong you build your state institutions, it's not going to save democracy if you cannot maintain trust into it.

@@gustaf3811 Democracy is an experiment, an ongoing project. It requires constant participation from the citizenry to work. The reason why democracy fails is because the public doesn’t participate fully in it, involuntarily via things like voter suppression laws but also voluntary due to such attitudes like “I don’t talk about politics.” Most citizens limit their engagement with politics to voting only in presidential elections. Democracy requires more involvement than just voting for a president to work, indeed for democracy to work the citizenry must engage in more civics than just voting. When the public is limited in its political engagement it allows public servants to develop into their own class of elites which is exactly what democracy is suppose to prevent. For democracy to work, everyone must be political, there cannot be a few people whose job it is to be political and everyone else disengages with political business. I’m other words, democracy fails when there exist a political class.

"The more governments control what their fellow citizens know the less they can claim the authority of those citizens for how they rule. The more governments withhold information from their fellow citizens the less accountable they are to those who give them their authority." John Dunn "Democracy". The biggest paradox of democracy is that while insists that government exercise democracy on behalf of its citizens but as matter of fact it is in hands of very few of those citizens, many of whom become career politicians. In terms of both political and economic power, the mass democracy of Periclean Athens has given way (by necessity) to an accommodation with what Dunn refers to as the "order of egoism," sustained by an economic system that encourages the accumulation of wealth and power in the hands of a tiny percentage of the population. The challenge for governments that wish to be seen as democratic is to preserve their ability to claim that they rule by the consent of the governed. In an age in which the ability of governments to intervene in the lives of their citizens is more powerful than ever, this is a matter of no small importance.

regardless of what kind of governing system there is, there is always a hierarchy. none of the communist regimes actually practice equality contrary to those who romanticise it. though the monarchy was abolished in france, the republican soon showed no difference. when people have power, they become greedy. this is very human. the failure to understand shows a sort of naivety. if you can see this abuse on the workplace level, do not expect a government body to do better. protesting violently won't change history. the same people who revolt may end up ruling but they won't make the place better once they are in power. there are always going to be people who are going to be left behind. and as a minority, a majority race privilege is very real.

We don’t resist democracy, and democracy is right there in our constitution, but we don’t buy into the democracy-turned-into-popularism or capitalist-control-democracy, with which you end up with mediocre or corporate-orientated leaders, and parties wasting much time and energy fighting each other instead of coming up with real plan and solving the problem of real people. Plus the the shitholes created by the US in the Middle East and North Africa, and the recent Hongkong riot in the name of democracy, we are really fed up.

Price's law's extentsion to the socio-politico-economic arena dictates that " In every trading game , that is iterative in nature, the core element/commodity of that game will always eventually get concentrated in the hands of a few". For eg. in economic arena, we have capitalism. A highly iterative trading game. What happens there? Naive opposers think that redistribution of wealth in the poor strata will solve most of the problems, not realizing that due to the iterative nature of the system, that wealth will again eventually get concentrated in the hands of a few.
The political system is similar. What's happening in France is not the death of democracy. Its because the structure became so multi-layered there, that now it is not growing at the similar pace that its population's awareness and demands are growing. Thus creating a mis-match, leading to dissatisfaction. Over the years, democracy has been so glamourized by the west, that people can't even conceive of it becoming an inefficient system. Again, its not the death of democracy that is happening. In fact, if we look, the populists (whether liberal, conservative, democratic or autocratic) are the most democratic people in that system. They aren't presenting any of their own views. They are just projecting the views and insecurities of the people. If the people choosing Erdugan as their leader , it is the democracy that is paving the path for autocratic system. And that is the essence of democracy. Although, dictatorship or autocracy are efficient in their management, but after some time they become too rigid and hence brittle. Democracy, although being pathetic, holds the most "Potential" for future developments.

Fun fact: the singular main demand of the Gilets Jaunes movement is the RIC (Referendum from a popular initiative - similar to what is currently in place in Switzerland). The Gilets Jaunes do not threaten democracy, they actually threaten the undemocraticness of the French government. The Gilets Jaunes actually fight for more direct democracy.
The movement emerged after the implementation of a (arguably badly made) carbon tax, but the movement soon realized that they could get all or most of their demands if the government accepted one thing: the RIC, the ability for citizen to petition on a question/solution and organize a referendum among citizens by the sole initiative of the people and without the involvement of elected representative leaders.
Also, it is misleading to paint such a pejorative view of the movement. Yes, there was violence, but most of it was started by the repression by the police order by the government. The violence from the police only fueled the use of violence among the movement.
Also, the extremists (which, as always, tend to be more violent) were only marginal. We actually saw the hard right and the far left unite around common demands and goals (which consisted mostly of a demand for more direct democracy).
Although, I am not saying the movement is exempt from wrongdoings.
PS: I don't know who is this freaking guy, you interviewed, who is "the voice" of the movement of the Gilets Jaunes. And I say that as a freaking French person.

Part of the "problem" is that people expect politicians to do everything the voters want, but voters don't all want the same things. So the voters elect different politicians, and in order for those different politicians to get anything done they have to compromise. That means that no voter is going to get everything they want. For example, there are people who are upset about a rise in gas prices, but there were average citizens who voted for policies like that because they're environmentalists, live in cities dealing with extreme congestion and pollution, or are pedestrians and cyclists who want safer roads, which means fewer cars on the roads. I don't remember where I heard it, but I've heard it said that people don't really want a democracy; they want a dictator who supports their interests.

    • @gustaf3811
