You might think that living in Maine all of my life would have deadened my appreciation of fishing for brook trout. On the contrary, my appreciation deepens with each passing season. Thanks for including the "brookie fishing" and "Grand Lake stream" segments in this beautifully shot and executed video. PS) I'm actually quite new to fly fishing but I'm totally hooked.
One thing I've learned from guiding for brookies is that they usually try to drown a mouse before eating it. They'll often short strike or tail slap it, then come back to eat it when they think it's dead, so it's often good to pause after they miss it if they come back to actually eat it.
One of the things I love about this video is that it lets you know, that there is no "one way" to do it. I haven't been doing it wrong. Great info, great footage, great Fish! Way to go Tom on those huge Brookies. WOW!
Wow, I used to catch 10 to 16” brookies in upstate NY as a kid on small woolly buggers, but did not know they could even get to 6+ lbs ! Simply gorgeous! Great instruction on casting tactics thank you :)
Greetings from the Emerald Isle of Ireland 🇮🇪🇮🇪, love your videos and fishing tuition, just getting into streamer fishing, can't wait to try it out,🇮🇪🇮🇪👍
So, this was the most interesting instructional video on streamer fishing that I have ever seen. Beautifully scripted and the photography was excellent. Well Done!!
Thank you for this great video. I noticed Tom uses his right hand for casting, fighting and reeling. I switched that a few years back and it worked wonders. I'm not a snob, I recommend trying to switch. I really loved the video!
Great vid! It always throws me off the way those east coast rivers have a brownish tint to the water/foam. Guess I'm spoiled by clear steams of the west.
I'll never forget the first time i tried fishing with a mouse fly. I was on a river that iv'e fished at for years and regularly caught 10"-12" rainbows and browns. First day with the mouse and i caught seven 16"+ rainbow trout and one 23" brown!
A couple of my favorite tactics, streamer fishing and throwing a mouse 🐁 both produce a Big Bang . I’m glad you brought up the double streamer set up , when things get Tuff I use this and in most cases it’s a game changer . Great video :-)
Back in the 90s I developed a streamer technique that is extremely effective. Just like a good gold prospector, I never shared the method since my goal was the be the "big bwana" on the water. In the spring of 2022 the technique is going public along with a new style of streamer that elicits the strike even better than the 1990s method. The lesson will be to never present the fly in any uniform fashion. Piscivorous trout have particular clues to strike. They do not want a "natural" presentation. More to come next spring. Also, color DOES make a big difference. Fish in each river have a color they are accustom to, They will hit that color first.
Tom if you ever come back to Maine I would absolutely be honored to go fishing with you. I’ll bring you up to the east outlet of the kennebec, caught a 4 lb landlocked salmon last weekend out of that river!
Another great video Mr. Rosenbauer. I fish with streamers and have hade some success' though my streamer patterns are very small compared to those that you use. I will try some larger streamers next fishing season in the spring in the province of Québec, Canada. I never caught anything with my mouse pattern and I «retired» it this season; perhaps I'll give it another try.
my longest and my most exciting days have been spent with a streamer. BTW What's up with the reel. It sounds awful. This was like nails on a chalkboard for me. Thanks always for the great vids. I always (re)learn something.
the sound you're referring to isn't actually the reel, it's the sound of the Orvis "HD Trout" textured line. The line has micro-bumps on it that provide texture for increased surface area so that the line floats better. It also grips the guides better for improved rod loading in my experience.
I love fishing streamers. The strike to set ratio is very low for me, though. Any tips on hooking more fish that strike? I've tried waiting a bit longer to set, setting quickly, nothing seems to work consistently.
I'm curious .that huge trout that was caught.the reel n rod n weight line. I'm in the process of spending $$$ without permission of the wife. Lol. Can I know the specks... ? No congratulations on that huge beauty on the streamer. Very jealous but happy for you.
What's the preferred streamer rod length these days? Great video! I was formerly guilty of fishing streamers only when the hatch was off. What has helped me improve the most is to go out only rigged for streamers. Cover lots of water and change it up but keep at it.
I really enjoyed this video, and I want to give this a go as a change to nymph fishing. One wee point that I'd like to make however, is your lack of safety on boats. The guy was standing on a platform on a boat in the middle of a lake wearing a shirt and sneakers and no inflatable vest was to be seen. There's a lot of newbies out there and it's best to show them that safety is every bit as important as the fishing itself.
Tie a 6" piece of 20lb fluorocarbon to your fly line and tie a perfection loop on the fluorocarbon. Braided slip on loops aren't great. Can also use heat shrink and make your own welded loop on the end of your fly line. Couple good videos online.
I would advise a 6-inch piece 40 lb mono instead of fluorocarbon, attached with a nail knot. Then you put a Perfection loop in it. Fluorocarbon will make the end of you fly line sink. Unless it's a sinking line, then fluoro is fine.
Great vidio as always. Own 5 or 6 Helios 2 rods salt and fresh , the white garish strips on the 3 has turned me off the Helios rods, there designed by a traffic marketing artist who does not understand fishermen like refined thoughtful design
I’m so thankful for Tom rosenbauer, there are too many guys on UA-cam who think they’re gods gift to fly fishing!! He is a mastermind with good vibes
I think that is the fishing community in general...
We need more Toms in the world.
The brookies at the end were just stunning!!!

Wow, I used to catch 10 to 16” brookies in upstate NY as a kid on small woolly buggers, but did not know they could even get to 6+ lbs ! Simply gorgeous! Great instruction on casting tactics thank you :)
8.2 lbs is the state record up here in Maine! My buddy got a 6.5 last year up in northern maine!
Thanks Tom, seeing your videos not just teach but inspire us to get more and more into fly fishing. what a nice fishing technique

Great video thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Have you ever used a streamer, and a small black fly, on a tandem rig,to give the impression that the streamer is chasing the small fly,🇮🇪🇮🇪
Was just checking this video out and then Maine came into the video! AWESOME!
These videos are just great photography with added knowledge of fishing, nice job 👍
So glad you liked it.
Streamer Fishing, my Favorite by far... So exciting , and that violent hit keeps me coming day after day... :)

Dear Tom and Orvis. Well done.
Love seeing Tom get so animated!
How could you not when you are fishing?
That was a fantastic episode. I enjoyed it very much. Thank you.
..at the Nipigon River, years ago, the word used to be "any color of streamer you want, as long as it's black"...
Thanks Tom for sharing your knowledge, much appreciated. Tight Lines!

holy crap thats a big brook trout
It was my best ever.
good tips thanks for sharing
You are very welcome.
Tom your the best!!!!
Thanks Ernie
I would like to know what weight rod you recommend for streamer fishing? I'm from maine and usually fish with a 9' 4wt.
For trout generally 6-7wt 9ft.
@@kylemo938 I beat my 6wt up on chum salmon. Finally got a 7wt because my other was stolen. 7wt is better for sink tip
Good lookin water!

Streamer fishing is SO OOOO frustrating!
YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT!! (Still is...stupid provo river!)
🔥
What spencive are orvixfly reel are 😊😊😊$????
Key takeaway: Try every possible cast, retrieve pattern, retrieve speed, current direction, river location when throwing streamers.
Yup. You just never know...
What mouse pattern is that with the looped head? Looks like a killer fly that I'd like to try tying. Thanks!
I love how they get a clip of Tom fishing a Clearwater then when he's actually fishing he's got the bad boy H3
@Peter stephen Whyte www.orvis.co.uk/hats-for-men
Ok- what river are those monster brookies in ?
Tom was visiting Three Rivers Lodge in Labrador. Massive Brook Trout there who will eat dry flies and especially mice patterns
I love fishing streamers. The strike to set ratio is very low for me, though. Any tips on hooking more fish that strike? I've tried waiting a bit longer to set, setting quickly, nothing seems to work consistently.
Most believe a strip, set and lift is most successful for streamer fishing

Most people like a 9-footer
What about using streamers in murky, river water?
I really enjoyed this video, and I want to give this a go as a change to nymph fishing. One wee point that I'd like to make however, is your lack of safety on boats. You are right we should set a good example.
Nice video. What size line is Tom using in the boat? Thanks for posting.
It was a 6-weight Helios 3D
What if you don’t have a loop on your line?
Get some heavier tippet, tie that line to the tip of your fly line with a nail knot and then a loop at the end of that line. that is what I have done.
Tie a 6" piece of 20lb fluorocarbon to your fly line and tie a perfection loop on the fluorocarbon. Braided slip on loops aren't great. Can also use heat shrink and make your own welded loop on the end of your fly line. Couple good videos online.

Awesome stuff, where was the end shot catching those big brooks?
Tom was visiting Three Rivers Lodge in Labrador for this beautiful Brook Trout. You can watch the show here: ua-cam.com/video/-iNLstZGum8/v-deo.html
I think Brook Trout are the prettiest fish out there. Wow. (Please don't remind me that Brook Trout aren't "real" trout- who cares, beautiful fish!)
!!!!!!!!
When is Pete going to catch one?
Big fan of your vids keep it up, wanna be yt friends?
streamers on a 4wt??
can u do it'
yes, small ones and usually unweighted
Where were those huge Brookies?
Three Rivers Lodge, Labrador. www.trophylabrador.com

Grand Lake Stream is not in Down East Maine.
Hi Greg. I'm not sure where you are getting your information but Grand Lake Stream IS in DownEast Maine. preview.tinyurl.com/yd7mynvv

You’ve clearly never taken a fish in a streamer. 😂😂😂

They definitely dont appeal to geeks who stare at their cork and finish all day
The garish label on the H3 rods was designed by one of the best fly fishers I know.. Not a marketing geek. But he's young--different aesthetics.
They are not my cup of tea, but - they are distinctive, aren't they? You KNOW what they're fishing here.
Black nail polish will fix that ugliness.
Kelly Galloup has already done these videos. Copy and paste...
Yup that's exactly what we did.
