Kelly, I have a confession.. I have been watching your videos for years with the secret hope that none of my buddies would see your videos so I could have the competitive edge. I realize now how selfish that was, but the content, tying, and tips were so good. From now on I will like every single video. You make amazing content, don’t be ashamed to ask for a like. Thanks brother.
Seeing Swanny in the boat with Kelly brought back an interesting memory when the three of us were fishing the Big Hole and Kelly hooked me in the chin with both hooks on a Circus Peanut. The Big Hole is challenging to row so Kelly and I had rowed all day and alternated fishing. Swanny kept wanting to row so towards the end we let him row. I was in the front and Kelly in the back and we made a bet on who would catch the largest fish. The looser had to buy the 6 pack. Swanny takes off from the bank and I'm tying a streamer on in the front in the mean time Kelly launches a cast over my head at some promising water but doesn't like the cast so picks it up just as I looked up. Felt like a good punch to the jaw as I was now wearing the circus peanut in my chin. Being a physician I wasn't worried about it as I knew it was embedded in an area that wouldn't bleed much or hurt. I turned and looked at Swanny with a big grin on my face and Swanny lost it so Kelly had to take the oars while at the same time playing me with his streamer. It was a rodeo getting around some dead fall but we anchored and Kelly had to take the fly completely apart to get both hooks out.😅😅
Thanks Kelly. I've fly fished for over 60 years but almost exclusively drys with the occasional nymph and wet. About 3 years ago I started trying to figure out streamers and 1 1/2 years ago found your videos. The only thing better than watching the videos would be if I could actually spend time on the water with you or one of your guides. Thanks again.
Another great informative video from Kelly. The information and insights are amazing. One of the less obvious aspects of this video is that it conveys a sense of reality. Some fly fishing videos make it look like the fly fisher catches a big fish with every other cast which creates unrealistic expectations. Kelly’s generosity in making these great videos never ceases to amaze me. I patronize his fly shop and his cabins in appreciation of his generosity. 30:07
Your videos have helped me go from an OK fly fisherman to a pretty good fly fisherman. Now while I'm out fishing I end up helping the other fisherman around me if they ask me for help.
Such a vast amount of information! Hanging on every word while watching. I’m sure there’s something that will come in handy. And…I hit the like button 😂
Fly fishing for 50 years +, almost always two flys…streamer on the point, wet on the dropper! Strip, pause, strip, pause etc. but haven’t been moving the rod tip…caught 1000s and 1000s, but will now add rod movement and see what happens! Thanks for that!
Really appreciate these videos. Coming from a hard tackle background I can see some of the techniques transferring more than I had suspected when spending time on the water. Lesson here is don't be afraid to twitch and move the rod. Great work all!
Kelly thanks for the great video. I have both of your streamer books and have read them many times but was always confused as to how to go about streamer fishing while wading which mostly what i do as i dont have access to a boat. Seeing you do it helps a lot. Hope to see more wading videos. All the Best Randy
You are a legend. That boot tip was so good. I never even thought about that until you said it. Always cinch em down dry and wonder how in the heck rocks got in my boot.
I am just starting this spring to streamer fish, even though I know technically a wolly buggers is a streamer that I have used for years. I learned to flyfish in the early 80's but manely used nymphs and dry flies. Im.really looking forward to learning the art of streamer fishing. Thanks, Kelly, for your informative information and videos. I used to ty professional in my younger years for a local fly shop here where I live in northwest Colorado. But now I just ty for myself and my friends and getting ready to ty your zoo cougar. 😊
Kelly anyone who like you Channel and experience and knowledge is a fly fisher person, and we should always be HITTING that LIKE BUTTON ALWAYS you always give so much to learn from!!!!!!!!!
I really enjoyed your video and am anxious to try what I thought were two key takeaways of things I can improve immediately and might be doing wrong: 1) Creating animation on the streamer immediately after the fly hits the water. I have always waited a second or so to let the fly achieve depth before I stripped or tried to give the fly action. I never thought the fish immediately keyed on the streamer when it hit the water - in fact, I thought the initial splash of the fly may spook the trout in the immediate area and may not be the ones ultimately taking the fly if you do get a strike. 2) Using the rod to create action vs just stripping the line. If I understand correctly, this allows for both lateral and vertical/jig action (more variation) while keeping the rod tip down in position to set a strike if you keep your line tight & controlled with the retrieve. Also, sounds like it allows you to present the fly head first by leading with the rod which is better than leading with the tail from a typical fly swing where the current is pulling the fly tail first. I haven't been doing any of this so this will be fun to try. Great video and can't wait to try! Thank you, Kelly
I love watching your videos. They are CRAZY informative. I have learned so much from you. Even love watching you fly tying videos. I recently thought of a funny suggestion... your partner in crime is obviously a great fisherman (Johnny). You ruthlessly make fun of him in many videos (poor Johnny). It does show how close you are. Anyway I think it would be hilarious if you pulled a video together of all the abuse Johnny takes from you. Really great info you publish. Keep it up.
Your rod tip movement then retrieve is something I will now make my go to when stripping stuff here in NorCal. Thank you for sharing and your honest ambivalence to asking for audience approval. As someone in the media who struggles with that as well, it made me smile.
4:48 I transport my boots to the river in a 5gallon bucket full of water. Slip into the foot tractors like the old pair of slippers in front of the fire. 🔥
Very well done. You packed as much relevant info as possible in a fairly short time. Would you still use this setup on a slower river or would you feel the need to switch to a floating line ? Also, about the rod: have you tried this 9’ 6wt bonefish fishing (with another type of line of course)? How does it do on longer casts, being fairly rigid? Have a good one
Kelly, could you elaborate on fighting fish? You said "the more you use drag, the more the fish runs downstream". I take it you instead let line slip out from your line hand while fighting; how is that less likely to induce a downstream run?
I have a question on the jig strip and jerk strip methods that you use; I’ve recently began introducing these two methods and holy crap the animation and increase in triggering strikes has been amazing. What I’m struggling with is the hook set portion. Are you still employing a strip set for the hook set? I’ve had greater success with the hook sets on the jerk strip method because the rod tip is jerking down stream and still essentially in the same plane that the fly is swimming in. However with the jig strip being a more vertical method, I know the cardinal sin in streamer fishing is hitting that big classic trout set overhead when you get an eat, because this in most cases will rip the fly right out of the fishes mouth. If anyone employing these two methods could lend some advice or refer me to a chapter in Kelley’s book that explains this exact aspect of the method, that would be really helpful as I refine this tactic. It truly is one of the most fun ways to fish. I even managed a PR rainbutt yesterday on my local river on the first day employing Kelley’s method so I’m clearly doing something right but I want to continue to refine this deadly approach.
I live in the UK and fish streamers in medium to large rivers. How do I get my hands on one of your rods. As ever great video keep it up. By the way Scotch Whisky is your cure 🥃
In one of your videos Kelly, you spoke of a strategy about if a fish comes up and flashes or rushes your fly but balks at the last second and refuses it, you do something. Searched for the video but can't find it. You were wading and talking about how you cover water in a grid... I've watched about 10 of your videos looking for it but I gotta get to work...
Change your retrieve. Generally a "show" from a fish means you've got the right color. First change the speed of your retrieve, if that doesn't do it, change the size or profile of your fly i.e. go big if your small, or leechy if your throwing a sculpin.
Some are and some aren't. Kelly will play around with how much weight he uses on flies depending on the type of water he is fishing. All of his "jig" style flies have weight. He ties his own dungeons without weight. Zoo cougars, Heifer Groomers etc don't have weight which makes them ideal for fishing over weed beds. These weightless flies must be fished with a sinking line (unless you find yourself a particularly willing fish).
Kelly, I'm sure you've dissected a fish before. Their brain is the size of a pea. How can one be that much smarter than another? I think you're right given the same life both are probably equally hard to catch. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.
Camera guy is way too close, if you back up and have Kelly on the right third of viewfinder we could see the fly as well. While I love the videos this was a talking video and not a fishing video if we can't see the fly. Love the videos as always!
I license ho streamerx . Sorry …not a big fan of loop to loop connections . The importance of knowing how to tie knots is one of the major components of fly fishing
You're not a hero for horsing fish around by their mouths and then letting them go. Put a couple in the cooler and leave the rest alone. Kick and release fishing is not a virtue
Kelly is the rockstar of fly fishing, absolutely love your content and enthusiasm. I’ve learned a lot from you, more than any other fly fisher on UA-cam, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting your new shop in Ennis and fish the Madison. 🇺🇸🫡 rock on sir!
As a walk and wade guy, I really appreciate this video. Thanks Kelly.

Kelly that wading tip using the rod as a stabilizer was awesome-thank you!
"6 beers run down my chin". 😹😹 best line in the whole video. I'm going to have to borrow that one.

Veteran anglers sharing their knowledge to this degree is paramount to our sport. Thanks for being generous sir.
Thanks for this. I am 66 and love to wade, but not as stable as I would like. The rod tip in the water is an awesome tip!
“Just a little fella “. lol. That was a nice one where I fish

Beautiful water. Thanks for living the dream for those of us who can’t.

Awesome video! We should all like everyone!!!! This is quality with a hint of comedy 👍🔥
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
I marvel at all you teach and show. Here, as an old film and video director, I'm marveling at how you've eliminated the wind noise. Wow. 🤗

Yes!! More Kelly knowledge!! Thank you sir. Can't wait to come back this year!
Hangover not setting for hours lol...love it !
Regards to you and Mel. Appreciate all you share in technique and look forward to seeing your new place in Ennis.

I swear every video is like a masterclass
Kelly every one of your videos is angling ivy league!

I think You just solved my sinking line casting problem. almost like you have been watching me. Now I have something to work on. Thanks Kelly Galloup!
There is so much good information in this video. Thank you.
The rod as a wading stabilizer... Now that's money. 💪💪
I always enjoy and learn from these videos. Excellent stuff

Great tips. I have a bad habit of letting the line go with my left hand so that’s something I’m going to work on. Thanks

Kick ass video Kelly.

How do you beat a fishing trip and tips from Kelly??? These videos are great. Almost a private lesson. Keep these coming, guys. Thanks again!
Keep these videos coming! 🤘🤘
Excellent video!
Hi Kelly, Great educational video, as always. The water wasn't so deep so could you have used sink tip v a full sinking line?
Thank you.

Nothing like rowing a boat with a hangover😅
I’m sure it’s second nature for Kelly.. 🤣
Is there any other way?😅
Kelly’s idea of little Fish , are like Hawaiians idea of little waves. The scale is obviously not the same.
it’s also just the demeanor and goal some people like you go to catch fish while people like kelly go to catch THE fish yk😂
Kelly, could you elaborate on fighting fish? You said "the more you use drag, the more the fish runs downstream". I take it you instead let line slip out from your line hand while fighting; how is that less likely to induce a downstream run?
If it’s a big fish the more you pull the more they will run and freak out. A lot of west coast steelhead Spey guys talk about that as well

"Get your sh*t out of the way, Swanny" hahahaha. Leave Swanny alone!!!
Notice u rod set and don’t strip set. Is that because u animate the retrieve with the rod and aren’t inline to strip set ?
Precisely
I live in the UK and fish streamers in medium to large rivers. How do I get my hands on one of your rods. As ever great video keep it up. By the way Scotch Whisky is your cure 🥃
Streamer long still good for smaller streams? Or short?
How do you like the skwalas vs simms?
i liked this video kelly
Show us your favorite streamers - go to stuff
Couldn’t be better timing for me. I’m trying to actually get my streamer fishing down this year
🤣🤣🤣

The fishing wisdom is so so so good. Except the booze. Let’s not pass that foolishness on.
How about Browns aren't even native there and you are bashing the native fish????
Rainbows are not native either, has to flow into the Pacific to have native Rainbows.
