I have learned more about fly fishing in the past couple of weeks that I've been watching your videos...than I have in the past 10 years or more. I was mainly fly fishing for salmon up in Alaska, so this small creek fishing is very new to me. I can't wait to get up into the rivers and streams here in Tennessee and catch me some trout! This past weekend I came across a small rock pool on a stream. This was by no means a trout river, but I fished it and caught some tiny bream and what we call moonies. More a salt water fish, but upstream in a small rock pool. The more I watch your videos, the lighter I want to fish. I used a 6 weight rod and line. But I had fun, and this video just enhanced my desire to continue flyfishing small rivers and streams. Just thought I would share 😊

I just spent a week fishing the Tirthan Valley in the Himalayas National Park, India. Small stream, steep gradient. Caught plenty of brown trout including a "big one" from a deep pool. So much fun, so different to lakes. Trout are so versatile. All these tips are so applicable and much appreciated.
I am relatively new to fly fishing and am LOVING fishing our small streams. With so many big rivers about in a major fishery, it is great to have these small places all to myself to fine hone skills and build confidence. This vid is saved for sure. Really good points. This is a perfect video for beginners and those not use to fishing little wild streams. Your fly choices are just like mine. A fat #14 EHC or a #12 Stimulator with a pheasant tail or rainbow warrior in a size 16-18. Such a deadly combo. Nothing better than fishing a steam that's not been littered.
These videos are so great. The narration, and the casting examples are top notch. After watching the how to find trout in rivers videos I went out and caught my first Colorado trout!!!

This is what I do in Yorkshire England. The little rivers (creeks) hunting wild brown trout It’s the best. Very enclosed rivers here with overhanging canopy of trees from both banks Like a tunnel so use 6ft 2 weight rod as not much room But it’s great fun A adventure every time.

I fish small streams almost exclusively. The streams I fish produce quite a few larger trout in the 12-13" range. Small streams are less crowded, in fact I seldom see another fisherman. I use a 2 or 3 weight rod in a 7 or 7 1/2 foot length. Good video and great information.
Thanks for the tips on small stream fishing. During the summer months the lakes are a mess with boaters, Jet ski's, swimmers, dogs. I hide in the streams as far away as I can get. Just getting into Tenkara so your tips are really helpful.
Abolsolutely love small creek fishing. Where I live it's like a 10 min drive to a local creek that isn't fished much if you get off the beaten path. It's challenging in that casting conditions are basicslly worst case scenario, the trout spook incredibly easy but they're not picky. Stimmys and para adams all day. Sure the majority of catches are 6-8" but everyone now and then you catch a beautiful wild 12" brown. Great stuff.
small streams are all I have locally, and fly fishing is almost nonexistent here so I'm learning everything the hard way on my own. This video is dead on for my experiences so far. Very very good video. I've been trying to nymph with very little luck but it sounds like maybe I should just be sticking to the dries anyway.

Thank you!! I grew up fishing a tiny little brook at the cabin in New Hampshire. A 6" brook trout is doing well. I have yet to discover a more overall satisfying kind of fishing and I have had many days of zero fish while learning, and after learning if I'm honest, but incredible memories of the day. And a day with my cheap 2wt bamboo rod is always a good day. Any chance of some more small steam stuff please??
Keep saving. It does not have to be horribly expensive. You can get a great outfit for about a quarter the price of a good smartphone. Depends on where your priorities are.
Still to this day, my favorite rocky/slow stream fly is a classic indicator ant in cinnamon. Bass, trout, bluegill, chubs, suckers, etc. Caught em all on that fly

Small streams are so much fun just because they're a different challenge to what most of us are used to, and can be a lot more accessible. Theres 1 small stream I like to fish that's 5 minutes from my door, while other bigger rivers are at least 45 minutes away.
The only time I've caught a fish in a 2 inch deep creek is where the river turned almost 180 degrees and there was a deep pool about 6 feet deep and there were a couple of 12 inch brown trout in it.
I cut my teeth on small waters like this, in the desert of all places. I started with a glass rod, a K-mart special, but I was digging around in the garage, and stumbled across my mom's old 9'6" bamboo rod. I'm 63. Her grandfather brought it over with him from Germany around the turn of the century, so I'm confident that by the time it was stolen from me in 2003, it was right at 100 years old. No idea what weight it was. I pulled the reel off the glass rod and put that on it. It had the #7 level floating line it came with. I could lay out 60' with ease, and it roll cast beautifully. I didn't have anyone to teach me to roll cast, or bow it out there, or anything else. No one to teach me the "rules". A couple of books and a video, and my memory of my paternal grandfather and a couple of uncles, what I'd seen on television. I had to figure it out, and in doing so, fished a LOT of water that no one else would touch.Tried a couple of graphites later on, lighter lines, always went back to my bamboo. It was clunky and long, hard to get it over the rocks and around and through the trees and brush, but so worth it. I actually ran across more folks uhm, doing stuff on the rocks, than I did other fishermen. Which was always a wonder to me that nobody fished my two streams outside of the stocked areas. Mostly rainbows of course, and rarely over 10 inches, but I caught Browns, Brookies, Cuts, Hybrids, and even a few Goldens 100 miles out of their range. If you've never fished a bamboo rod, ya gotta try it...
I'm really tempted to buy a cheaper flyrod to learn the art of flyfishing. I usually fish forest lakes with a bobber and there's always streams I really want to fish along the way. I think fly fishing those places would be a great thing
Hello - great video. My dad and I spent many summers fishing the Western Sierra Nevada and encountered many of those small streams. Can you recommend a dry fly floatant? There are a lot on the market and I have not found one that keeps the fly floating very long. Appreciate it. Tight Lines!!
Julia, good question. There are several "types" of floatant which do different jobs. They are Gel Floatant, Liquid Floatant, Powder Floatant, and Shake or Desiccant type floatant. I fish a 2wt, small streams, meadow ponds, seeps and holes in the middle of no where. Big fish are overrated, in my opinion it's the journey, the places I've pulled wild browns, rainbows, brookies, small mouth, red eyed bass, all sorts of sunfish and even fairly weighty carp out of tiny streams, I've seen lots of chain pickerel in stream oxbend ponds and big holes, I'm trying to learn to target them but they are big enough that I'm worried my little 6ft very light action rod wouldn't be enough to hold up to them
Agreed that the video was wonderful. Curious at your distaste for tenkara? It was invented with this type of stream in mind after all. Admittedly it is one of my favorite fishing methods so I'm slightly biased.

A trout attacking a surface pattern is the mosting exciting technique. Nothing wrong being a dry fly purist.

There is nothing different about fishing them. Just slow down a bit. All the rest is exactly the same.

It's just a standard Chubby Chernobyl that I tie. I just vary the colors some times. There is a video on the Orvis You Tube channel of me tying it.
