      I feel like you should correct 00:08 legacy CAN be fast, but a control mirror for example can be painfully long to play.
      The image of legacy is that its super fast, expensive and skill intense, thats true except for the speed. Imo that cliche is a bit harmful. In reality most matchups go for longer than just one or two turns :)

    • @zetekpl

      @@philipyoutube8720 If you gamble for karakas right away (there is 1 in deck) you have 1/5 chance of discarding it and insta losing. If you tutor crop rotation you have 1/5 chance of discarding the tutored target, but you still have second gamble in hand. So even when that 1 in 5 situation happens you tutor for karakas and have 3 in 4 chance of not discarding it. So you have higher odds of not losing when choosing the line of tutor for crop rotation (1/5 chance to lose vs 1/20).

    • @Hoologramek

      @@philipyoutube8720Karl has only one Karakas in his deck. If he was greedy and gambled for it and lost, he would've been screwed. Yes, he could gamble for Life from the Loam but Crop Rotation was less mana to tutor Karakas if it wasn't discarded. Essentially he made the play which minimized the risk of gambling and won

    • @total_dk6517
      @total_dk6517 2 місяці тому +4

      @@philipyoutube8720 It's to play around Force of Will. It's to avoid randomly discarding his 1-of Karakas. (With that edit I can't tell if trolling or not.)

      I was expected Thoralf to pass and intuition for triple Omni at EOT so he could get the cast trigger from the Emrakul. IDK if he had a reason for not doing it that way specifically or if might just be lack of reps with the deck. Omni-tell is a weird one to figure out lines for.
      Honestly, this one felt borderline unfair because it really seems like Carl has put in serious time with Lands because the plays he made were advanced and clean AF.

    • @liorramati265
      @liorramati265 2 місяці тому +36

      It's actually more subtle than that. There's no special carve-out for mana abilities in split second.
      What's actually going on is that split second prevents you from taking any game actions that put things on the stack, but there's an entire category of game actions that _dont_ put things on the stack - special actions, of which mana abilities are sub-category.
      Unmorphing permanents is another sub-category of special actions, which is why you can willbender a spell with split second

    • @nomatyx5789
      @nomatyx5789 2 місяці тому

      @@liorramati265 There absolutely is a carve-out for mana abilities in split second.
      "702.61a Split second is a static ability that functions only while the spell with split second is on the stack. “Split second” means “As long as this spell is on the stack, players can’t cast other spells or activate abilities that aren’t mana abilities.”"
      also, mana abilities aren't special actions. That's why Cursed Totem and Null Rod stop creatures and artifacts respectively from tapping for mana.
      "605.1. Some activated abilities and some triggered abilities are mana abilities, which are subject to special rules. Only abilities that meet either of the following two sets of criteria are mana abilities, regardless of what other effects they may generate or what timing restrictions (such as “Activate only as an instant”) they may have."
      "116.2. There are eleven special actions:"
      Feel free to check the comprehensive rules yourself-- activating mana abilities are not one of those 11 special actions.

    • @mmlgamer
      @mmlgamer 2 місяці тому +42

      @@liorramati265 ”no special carve out for mana abilities” This is incorrect. Split Second’s definition specifically says “that aren’t mana abilities.” If it didn’t explicitly make that exception, mana abilities that are activated abilities would be stopped.

    I think Thoralf missed lethal with their Dig Through Time decision at 14:09. If the picked 2 omnis, they can show and tell in one and play the other. Grip can only kill one of them and Force of Vigor can be countered for free with the Force of Will in hand. Then he can just keep casting Emerakuls and swinging for 15 until Carl dies.

One of them involving taking down Emrakul with Baleful Strix, and surgical the titan with another copy in opps hand in response to his shuffle trigger (Czech Pile at the time had too much worthless removal to board out so I usually also did put few Surgicals in hoping to break the deck after discarding the S&T and it sometimes worked). Recovered from zero and later raced his Clique with quickly deployed Deathrite Shamans. Sweet feeling.

    I was looking forward to see this series. Finally, my format is getting some love! I wished the whole tournament had been recored but the basic group was probably not done on site, I guess. But I am stilly happy about what I get. Toffel is always really good but I am getting impression that Carl REALLY improved. Very tight plays and assumptions from both. Lands is considered to be one of the harderst deck to play in Legacy and the matchup should be bad. Thoralf got really bad luck in G2 specially with Digs stil legal in the deck but it does not change the fact that Carl did really good job. I loved the show, the chemistry, the plays, everyhting. Thank you guys for your job and WELCOME TO LEGACY!

    At 2:55, just want to point out that cards that look for things outside the game do not allow you to get things from exile, as exile is technically a zone within the game.

    • @SilverBordered
      @SilverBordered 2 місяці тому

      Thoralf has been playing Magic so long, I'll give him a pass on this one. It was a rules change. Exile didn't always exist in the way it does today. I mean, old cards literally read "Remove from the game" which have been erratad to exile.

  • @SanityLapse

    Excellent stuff as always! In game 3, was that a misplay by Thoralf to play Show and Tell so quickly? He put an Emrakul into play on a turn when he already knew Carl had Crop Rotation in hand (from G Probe) and he had open green mana to cast it for a Karakas if he wanted. Thoralf had no counterspells for the Crop Rotation. Carl went a different, but still effective route. But Thoralf had all that information, unless I was missing something.
