  • Let me introduce you to a popular Korean street snack gyeran-ppang (계란빵) or "egg bread" today. This is a sweet, steamy, hot and fluffy little loaf of bread with a whole egg inside. It's sold by street vendors all over Korea.

    Until recently, I had never had gyeran-ppang before. Many of my readers who had travelled to Korea requested it on my recipe request forum, so when I went to Korea last November, tasting gyeran-ppang was on my list of things to do, a kind of mission. I wanted to taste it so I could make a recipe video for it.
    It was definitely delicious, and I could see why so many of my readers requested it!

    I really like that Maangchi doesn't waste ingredients in her videos. In this one, she makes sure not to waste any batter. In other videos, she makes sure not to waste stuff like gochujang by adding water, etc. etc. This is all stuff that's very common to my family but most people with cooking shows don't seem to do (maybe just to save time on camera) but sometimes it just feels so wasteful and goes against all my parents have taught me. Eat every last grain of rice in that bowl!

    I tried this bread together over Skype with a long-distance friend; we both baked it in our own kitchens and tried it there. It was deliciously good, and a really fun way to connect with someone who I can't meet with in person. I also fed it to my parents and another friend later, and everybody has loved it. Thank you Maangchi, for giving us a great recipe and a new chance to connect with each other!

    I am a dance teacher and my young dancers have been doing lessons online since mid march . Last Friday to take the monotony off daily dance training I created the Gyeran ppamg breakfast challenge. The dancers ages between 8+ and 13 had to follow the recipe and instructions to a tee . They were so excited recording the process and had a fabulous breakfast as well . Thank you Maangchi . What a great and fun leaning experience it was for them .

    Maangchi’s Egg Bread has had 2.7 million views. AMAZING. Her Egg Bread creation is so, so wonderful. It’s quick & straightforward and delicious. I did add cheese & breakfast meats and even without that, I will have this on permanent rotation for years. I think I will want to substitute maple syrup for vanilla extract as a test and see how that turns out. Or, make a savory version one day! Thank you!!!

    BTW, Swahili language is spoken by Southeastern Africa such as Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This video has captions in 11 languages now. All were done by you guys except for English caption. Impressive!

      Maangchi, I'm Vietnamese and I speak English fluently, I have to say the Vietnamese caption is really wrong. They translated teaspoon into tablespoon in Vietnamese. :(

    I’ve made this several times and each time they turn out great. I even used a mini muffin tin, grated cheese and whisked the eggs and those were adorable and really good. The recipe scales up easily and they also store well-the egg won’t be runny, but my kiddo can microwave a few in the morning.

      What if you just replaced that one pinch of salt with the cream cheese? You would still add a certain amount of salt and you wouldn't have to add extra sugar.

    I made this again. It’s so good. The cake is not overly sweet. Just perfect. I put an egg, ham, and cheese all together. Turned out perfect. My husband ate two by himself leaving me one. 😂. I’m going to multiply this recipe to make one big cake!

      Great minds think alike, I added taiwanese sausages and goat cheese but skipped the egg and pour it into a round shape pan, it is going to be a cake with a twist!!

    I just made this, but i scrambled it like i saw some korean street cooks did. I made one for my daughter with only egg and cheese and for me and my son with bacon and we used american cheese cause my kids only like that cheese. Taste great!!! Like some fluffy sweet cornbread with egg, cheese, and optional meat.

    Very easy to make! I doubled the recipe to make 5 bread in cute small pans. I already reduced 1tbsp sugar but it's still too sweet for my family. Will try only use 1tbsp sugar and see how well it will goes with egg and some minced beef on top🤔 i sprinkled some basil and pepper on top too and so delicious

    정말 감사합니다 Maangchi. Oh my! This is so delicious. I followed your recipe with a little improvisation, I substituted American cheese for the Mozzarella cheese. Also I baked it for 15 minutes because I wanted to egg to be cooked. You're the best!

    I've been taking care of my father and he's been hating on bread for awhile. I decided to try making this (for myself) and I offered him one of the loaves. I fully expected him to push it away after a bite like almost every roll or muffin I've baked. He not only ate the whole thing but wanted me to make more.       @@Maangchi Okay, I made it again, only I doubled the ingredients (except the egg in the middle) and I added a full cheese stick only half on each side. I have bigger loaf pans. The egg in the middle was at the 'sunny side up' stage at 18 minutes. They bread was cooked at that point too but it could have cooked a little longer in case of someone wanting a less rare egg. It was a bit much for one portion but it's good for someone whose very hungry. Thought I'd share!

    I've seen some people asking about the blue-colored eggs. Chicken eggs can range from blue to white to brown, depending upon the breed/genetics.

      +Chrissy Mitchell Excellent idea! Which is almost like the Parisian bistro food "baked eggs", which the French also put in some fresh herb such as thyme & parsley & drizzle w/ olive oil. Instead of mozzarella, you can use Swiss cheese. Bon Appetit!

    Today I made it for my grandsons . It came out very well but I used brown sugar not a refined one. Thanks maangchi, as all others say you make people energetic and happy. Keep going.
