This is a two part video of how I installed a Rough Country Lift Kit onto my Tacoma. This part is the installation of the front strut spacers.
NOTE NOTE NOTE: You actually have to remove the skid plate to loosen the front cam bolt of the lower control arm!
Here's the hardware sizes as well as specialty tools that you will need:
22 mm for lugs
12 mm for skid plate
19 mm for lower control arm cam bolts
19 mm for lower strut mount to control arm
19 mm for steering bracket to steering knuckle
14 mm for upper strut mount
Ratchet Strap

Good write up. I would add to mark the original orientation of the lower control arm adjustment bushings. Also, resolving interference between dropped diff and both skid plates was more involved than what was shown
The alignment will go out of whack after the installation. If you follow the series, I do go into showing how to align the truck at home. What do you mean about the interference? The diff drop installation is in Part 2 and I do show cutting the mounting brackets.

so many different install or diy for the kit. Even the directions from rough country dont go into this type of work for the kit on 3rd gen
The techniques in this tutorial should be pretty applicable to the 3rd gen. The suspension design hasn't really changed too much between the 2nd and 3rd gens.

Just curious, were the rear blocks tapered at all? Some kits come tapered and some are flat. Wondering if it matters at all..

Are you talking about spring compression spacers (in between the springs and top hat)? If so, no. I only used the spacer that go ok between the strut and the frame

@@KFloTacoma So finally after spending the whole weekend I was able to finally install the lift kit. Here are some observations from this experience:
1. This instructional video is easier to follow than the default rough country instructions.
2. The RC instructions were completely different and required more parts to be dissasembled.
3. RWD models like my Prerunner does not have front differential brackets so the spacers and brace cutting process from part 2 is unnecessary.
Many thanks to u, I saved 530 dollars for install and earned a priceless feeling of accomplishment.

Why not bilsteins? Heard so many jacked up things about rough country.
It's all a matter of personal preference at the end of the day. I haven't had any issues with this rough country kit actually.
Can you discuss if it is a bad or good idea to install a front spacer when the Tacoma already has a Stage II ICON from suspension for additional lift?
Thanks for the video! I will be installing same lift kit for my 2018 Tacoma. Will also install add-a-leaf to make the rear little bit higher. I will also thinking of installing 285/70/17 on -12mm wheels and add 2" wheel spacers (watched all your videos regarding these stuffs). Do you have any tip or suggestion? Thanks!
The wheel spacers I have are only 1.25" (amzn.to/2UqHQIT). Is the -12mm off-set from the stock off set? I would suggest taking a hard measurement of the difference in off-sets from your stock wheels to your new wheels. At 1.25" spacers, those seemed to be the widest without rubbing on 285's. You may need to trim some plastic pieces as well depending on the specific tire brands. If you are doing some hard off-roading, then keep in mind you may also need to do the cabin mount chop mod. Otherwise for regular street driving, you're good! Good luck, brother!

Armand, 2" are really wide and the best way to really validate the information would be to take current measurements of your truck. I would suggest turning the wheels all till the tire is really close to the body mounts (see this vid ua-cam.com/video/V23H_TTFW6o/v-deo.html go to 23 secs to see what I'm talking about). Take that measurement and minus 2 inches. That's the amount of clearance you have left. Whatever that remaining number is what's left of how big your tire can go.
If you really want to go with the 2" spacer and be sure they don't rub with 285's, you're going to have to do the Body Mount Chop mod, which will require cutting parts of the frame as well as the plastics. I'll be doing this mod in the next couple of months if you want to see what that work entails.
Hello my friend. I have a toyota yaris and I would like to pick it up 5 centimeters. you think I will have a problem with the sensors for the wheels. or some other problem?
Hi Giannis. That's a creative idea. I'm not too familiar with the build of the yaris but since its a car, the suspension will most likely not travel as far as a truck. 5 cm is quite long and you may need to also increase the lengths of brake lines and sensors. Depending on the tire you mount, there may be a need some fabrication work as well. Good luck!
Question: will this work with a 1996 2WD Tacoma (2.4L)? I just got this truck and want to lift it a little for better visibility and, as some of my clients are in remote locations, to prevent bottoming out on less than perfect unpaved roads in Washington State. That's the lift kit I want for this but I want to make sure it will fit my truck. Also, if you know, will I need to alter the wheel wells/fenders to fit 16" wheels?

I just put a 1" body lift on my 07 tacoma..you have any idea how to raise the front bumper?
your custom bumper is probably mounted on the frame and that requires custom bracketing work. No easy way to do it
@@KFloTacoma I've done a lot of research on this and I can't find any kind of brackets for a 1' lift..it seems only the bumper cover needs to come up but I'm lost on it
With those lift plates, you end up installing the strut backwards, front to bark, axially 180 degrees from the way it came out, right?
+BL y yes they are 180 degrees from the original position.
Did You have to Unbolt any parts of the sway bar or Tie Rod? When I try to put my set up back together, the sway bar is in the way, will it move once I finish the other side? Thanks
You can move the steering knuckle forward and back, up and down, to make room so that you can wiggle that strut assembly through
How did you rotate the strut so the bottom bolt hole lined up?
Did you need compression springs?
Just rotate the oreintion of the top by 180 degrees. You dont need spring compressors yet if you're following this vid
What will happen if you dont get alignment for couple days will it damage your tires wear
If you're not driving a lot of miles and at if the toe is still semi-straight then you should be fine. Watch my video on wheel alignment at home to check the toe. It should take you less than 20 mins to check it for both sides.

So I was just doing the exact procedure to put on the same lift, but when I detach the bottom of shock from the lower control arm, it would not drop free. It's like it's spring loaded.. any insights on that? I really didn't want to entirely remove the lower control arms either..

Hey bro, did you loosen the camber bolts completely? Once you have the nuts loose it should rotate freely. Let me know how it turns out. You can also spray penetrating fluid in that area too. The rubber bushing might be binding up on the frame brackets.
Yup, the camber bolts were backed off plenty, with penetrating fluid a-plenty as well.. It was a real wtf. I'll just get back in there give 'er, as we say in Canada. Hey thanks for the reply!
Cool. Good luck! You can also use a hammer and or pry bar to help loosen it.
Will the lift kit stress my ball joint or cv axle ??
I've added 10K miles, towed multiple motorcycles with no issues. The purpose of the diff drop was to compensate for the increase in height so that the cv axle angle isn't so steep

Unfortunately not dude. I would recommend getting shock spacers and then adding a leaf in the back. Watch my add a leaf kit video for installation of the leaf kit. You can get any generic strut spacers for the front. Good luck bro.
You didn’t mark the pin on cam bolt before removing did you get a weird mid alignment when turning? This happened to me
No, the camber and caster will be completely off regardless because you are lifting it 2 inches out of OEM control arm angles. The truck will need a realignment and I do show how you do that at home in another video in this channel - make sure you check that out.
Hey man, i can’t seem to get my shock mounts off, the ring at the very top with 3 14mm bolts. I have the springs, struts, LCA’s all dropped or out of the truck but they seem to attached. Any guidance ?
Are you at the point where your using the spring compressor and remove the securing nut on the strut?
Try applying wd40 in between the spring and the shock mount. You can also try using a screw driver to pry the areas in between.
How well does you vehicle go with these installed?
The truck is definitely taller and more badass. It's quite impressive. It drives pretty much the same though

I had a question, I tried installing Bilstein 5100s on the front of my tacoma set on the #3 ring and it dont matter how much I jack up under my lower control arm, the gap for the 2 bolts on my steering knuckle always stays the same, pretty much juts lifting up my whole truck with the jack , is a differential drop bracket essential to make this work on my suspension ?
Yea you're definitely just lifting the truck. Did you use the ratchet strap to compress the upper control arm to the lower control arm? (Rewatch the vid again to see what I'm talkimg about) That should also compress the shocks so you can get the 2 bolts in.

Sorry my man ,one more question with the leveling kit.. do I need a differential drop bracket also ?
The purpose of the diff drop is to keep driveshaft angles from being too aggressive. Leveling kits have a tendency of doing so. So yes, I would highly recommend a diff drop.

How long did it take you to install your kit? Thinking of doing 3/2 on my Tacoma
I was also shooting videos so it took me longer than normal. I would advise budgeting a day and a half to work on it

2.5 inches
So the front spacer was actually 2.5inches?
No, between the spacer and lift is 1:2. Meaning that the spacer is 1.25" to achieve the 2.5" lift. This is because the strut is pushing from the middle of the lower control arm and not at the end. If it was the end, then it would be 1:1
Can't get the lower control arm free no matter what, tried a pry bar, lubricant, something seems pinched

Yea the LCA mounting points get tight. Once you loosen the camber bolts enough, it will require some muscling to open up that LCA
Now we can't compress the strut enough to get the two bolts back into the steering bracket?! We tried straps, and a bottle jack but it caused the entire truck to lift up with a lot of tension?!?! Everyone elses struts seem to end up right where the bolts meet the steering bracket?!?!
Dude, take a 20 min breather. The ratchet strap has to be connected from the LCA to the upper control arm (UCA). The two come together so you can bolt the steering bracket.
Watch my vid again. I jack the LCA to the point where truck starts lifting. The ratchet strap then bring the UCA down so you can bolt the steering bracket
With the front spacer and rear block how does the ride quality feel?
It rides pretty much like stock. I did notice that the ride quality in the back is a bit stiff if I don't have the cap and tent and the bed is completely empty.
do you need to remove the upper and lower ball joints and the tire rod ?
Just the steering knuckle and loosen the LCA - I would recommend rewatching the steps.
Question, I just installed a similar spacer on my 2019 tacoma trd sport and the upper control arm is actually touching the coil spring. (took some of the powder coating off the pass side coil spring when I compressed the upper and lower control arms to put in the knuckle bolts)I still have the truck on a jack and I'm kinda scared to put the wheels on and let it down. As you state the only way to get them back in is to turn them 180. I have installed the diff drop already which came with the kit. Almost seems like the spring is bulging from the preload into the upper control arm? Any suggestions?
There really should be no preload beyond what the spring already had before. Keep in mind the spacer is placed above the top hat and not in between the spring and top hat. Unless it is a rubber coil spring spacer that you bought

@@KFloTacoma Its a common aluminum spacer, I dont get it. I'll let you know when I figure it out. This should be simple as I am fairly mech inclined. Its pissing me off.
Gonna separate the upper control arm and check the clearance between that and the coil spring next. Dont understand why there is no clearance.

HELP!!! My lower control arm won’t lower. I loosened both sides. It’ll move up and down about 2 inches, but won’t go down. The rear nut was loosened, but the bolt won’t budge. The front nut and bolt are both loose. Do you think it’s the rear bolt hanging it up or do you suspect something is bent?
Thats probably the bushing. Spray some wd 40 in between the frame and the lower control arm (LCA). Use a pry bar to leverage the LCA up and down until it fully loosens.
Make sure the nut is completely off too. Hammer the bolt loose until you can move it in and out easily.

Good luck bro, I'm pretty confident it's the bushing. You just gotta break that loose and you're good to go.
are the specs for the bolts the same for a 2000 tacoma prerunner ?
Not exactly, it should be similar in specs though. I would suggest scrubbing through the 1st gen forums to get the right specs
How long was the process just for the front?
I was also filming so it took longer for me. If I wasn't, probably 3 to 4 hours to get the fronts done
What size tires you use on your taco?
I have 285/70/R17 which are the biggest you can go on this lift kit. I would advise going a little bit smaller. If you watch my video series, i ran into interference issues which I did fix/address.
KFlo's Krib - Tacoma Build i just bought that same size tire set up. Will utilize your tips from your vids to make my tires fit. I'll be getting the 3" bilstein 5100 lift with with aal in the rear.

If you removed the two bolts from the steering knuckle and fhe one lower bolt from the strut, you might just have a bit of corrosion. You can use a pry bar or a hammer to bring that Lower control arm down
