Excellent video! I think I may try replacing my own stunts on my Tacoma. I appreciated that vehicle was actually not new. So many videos are of r&r on new vehicles...never dirt or rust.

Very good ,you make it look smooth & hopefully I can find a shop as skilled as it's bit beyond my 80 + years ability ! Glad you performed this on Farm / offroad truck ! One of the best done video's I've ever seen ! Thanks😊
One thing not mentioned here is he happens to have the entire strut new. meaning he replaced the spring not just the shock. Many might just be replacing the shock which means you will need spring compressor to transfer the springs onto the new shocks. Replacing the entire strut saves you this added work.
These videos helped me a ton! You have to do them as a set for the front because you won’t be able to move the sway bar out of the way to fit the struts in and out. I also had to cut out the bolt that connected the strut to the lower control arm because the whole thing was seized. Just used a angle grinder. Other than that, it’s cake.
Great tutorial of working on an older truck. You use force when only needed. Anyone watching this would have trust in what you are doing. Great instructional video thank you!
Thanks man - my model was different for the sway bar linkage - hex key to hold the bolt as you loosened it - careful if it’s old enough it’ll be ground out - had to cut mine off and replace the linkage other than that smooth sailing.
Hi ,thanks for the video , I see you replaced the upper control arm , I have a 2nd gen Tacoma trd sport, I plan on buying 3rd gen tacoma off road bilstein front struts and springs , do I have to replace the upper control arms or can I just stay with what I have , thanks again
I also asked the same question. Found UCA replacement docs for Tacoma and it says just lightly tighten UCA long bolt and put everything together including the wheels and lower to ground. Bounce it a few times, this probably means standing in front door entry and jumping a bit, then torque the long bolt with the wheels on the ground. There is enough space for torque wrench in my case so I will try this. Makes sense since it sets the UCA to the correct height when tightened. I might have made the mistake of having UCA low so it will stress the bushings during flex I suppose so I'm going to rectify this.
anyone know if these are left and right specific struts? I see two different part numbers but nothing that says driver or passenger side. 2015 tacoma crewcab 4x4
Hey TRQ, if the connector snapped off and all I have is exposed wire and the side marker but no where to put the bulb and also no way to connect it to the car - what parts do you recommend I get? I’d really like to do this myself by finding the right wires, protecting them with the right material, finding the connector and attaching them to the wire, getting a new side marker and bulk and connect it to the connector.
Why both sides at the same time? Why not one side then the other? Not all of us have a lift! Thanks for these excellent videos. I replaced rear shocks yesterday and will do the front in a week.
At :50 to 1:00 you act like we need a backing wrench on a VERY LONG bolt through the upper control arm bushings. Those are SEPARATE bolts. And the SQUARE nut is held captive by a retainer. There is no need for any backup wrench.
be glad when they post a video for changing these with a lift kit. No where near as easy as they make it look. They seem to forget a "nice little bonk" includes welding torches and a shit ton of scraped knuckles.
This is my question as well. The video on the “Toyota maintenance” channel just takes off the top three bolts and the major bolt at the bottom and the whole strut slides down and out. I’m confused why this guy takes off so much other stuff.
Should the coil springs be replaced when shocks are? I have an 09 Tacoma double cab 120k miles. Not nearly as bad as that truck you showed. Mostly street riding.
+Keith Davis Yes, you would want to get the vehicle aligned after any major suspension component is replaced. Thanks for watching our video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Great presentation 👍 Unfortunately for us, the driver side strut rear upper nut is stripped and passenger side lower strut bolt is seized in the metal bushing 😡 Not having a good day on this project 😩 Suggestions, advice or suggestions will appreciated
Hard to win sometimes.Replaced gas tank straps the other day.Bolts came out easier that eating a piece of pie...took minutes.Could have just as easily have been too much rust and broken off. You never know until you try.
No info anywhere about how to set the sag on your new shocks once installed. My front end sits low and I’m afraid to loosen the top nut to give it more height. Does anyone know how to do this?

I'm 70yo and still do my own maintainence. Your videos are so much better than Chilton book.
My Tacoma is 18 years old and I’m changing all front suspensions. I’m very grateful for this video. Thanks Mr mechanic ,and TRQ parts
My son and I do the job watching this video and it makes our job easier thank you it is a very helpful video 👍👍
Just did this job, this video helped a lot! You don't have to loosen the upper control arm bolt if you don't want to or can't get it loose.

Well done. Love the fact that you included torque values. May DIY videos dont.
Very well done. Good editing. One of the best on UA-cam! Thanks!

Many might just be replacing the shock which means you will need spring compressor to transfer the springs onto the new shocks.
Replacing the entire strut saves you this added work.
For 99.99% of people it makes more sense to get the assembly all in one go. By the time your original shocks are leaking, your springs are sagging.m
@@tacomas9602 I’m that 0.01 percent got a deal on shocks and kept my springs wouldn’t recommend 😅. Would do it again great learning experience.
I love how he does not show the rear bolt of upper strut mount being removed. Its the hardest

I kind of like how you do it on a rusty truck. It’s more realistic

God bless you all! Did the wheel bearing video. Now front shocks with lift spacers. On to the rear shocks!
Spot on. Just finished replacing my front struts and rear shocks using these videos. Thank you so much!!
+Joe Engineer Thanks for watching our video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Easy explanation! Hard job. Thank you for sharing!
Can this be done for just the shock replacement too or is the strut assembly compressed, which would require a compression tool? Great detailed video.
Clear and concise. Thank you!
Those are awesome safety glasses! Who makes them?
Thank you, very helpful. The same guy from 1AAuto?
Do you have to have wheel alignment after? 🤙
You can skip the step of loosening the control arm bolt, I have done two sets of shocks so far without needing to.
+Sachem Gromiller Thanks for the feedback! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Agreed. Although in this case it appears he swapped them out anyway, just want mentioned.
Don't loosin brake line bolt.
Thanks man - my model was different for the sway bar linkage - hex key to hold the bolt as you loosened it - careful if it’s old enough it’ll be ground out - had to cut mine off and replace the linkage other than that smooth sailing.
Thanks for this.... last time I did mine, I dropped the lower control arm.... this looks easier and avoids playing with the alignment cams

How important is the UCA to be at level when putting it back in? What would happen if it was tightened when it was pointed low?
Good video.
You got lucky on the bottom shock bolt.
I noticed that you replaced the upper control arms. Do you have to un do everything when only replacing the struts
I did mines on the weekend and you must do them or can"t get it out
excellent video.... wish all of them are like yours..... tks
How does ur swaybar move so smoothly like that? Mine is stuck and I can’t move it out of the way
Would like to know if these torque specs are for a 2WD or 4WD Tacoma. They are different.
0:52 what was this move??? what was the 19mm wrench for???
Does in the control arm have to be pretty accurate to specs when tightening at the end or just something close?

Question ?
The torque of the wheels lug nots for Tacoma 2005 it’s 283 or 100 foot-pounds ? Minute 8:45
Thank you
the manual book says 83 .foot pounds

so now after all that is this require alignment?
+Jesus Muniz Thanks for checking us out! Yes, you will need to get an alignment after this replacement.
I dropped the sway bar down and un did the tie rod end. Lots of room, no need to split the BJs
Did you replace the upper control arm?
Bonus footage I guess because I was saying the same thing 🤷🏽♂️

Why though? What was the problem ? I'm looking to smooth out pothole bumps. 2012 4x4 Tacoma Sport access cab.

Preference. It'll return some ride height that you may have lost over time. But the main thing to replace is the shocks.
My Tacoma is almost 30yrs old and all original...guess i should replace mine lol.
Do you need an alignment after strut replacement?
+Keith Davis Yes, you would want to get the vehicle aligned after any major suspension component is replaced. Thanks for watching our video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
I had a heck of a time getting the shock out with the sway bar in the way. I had to remove the sway bar entirely…
