His mother abandoned the family when he was just three three years old , which later inspired him to write 'Holding Back the Years'. He did reconnect with his “mom “ living it up in Texas USA. She stated she has no regrets about leaving. Listen to it again , knowing the reason he wrote the song. I think he’s about 64 now and happily married living in Scotland and still tours. Love his voice and his music. ❤
Angie Stone sang the song for Love and Basketball. You should definitely listen to If You Don’t Know Me By Now by Simply Red. It’s a cover of the Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes song. I think Teddy Pendergast sang the lead vocals on that one.
The town in the video is Whitby, on the north-east coast of England. The ruins on the clifftop is the former Whitby Abbey. The town & the abbey were used by Bram Stoker as a backdrop for his book Dracula.
it's so different about leaving home for people now than when I was young. It is so expensive for young people to move out of their parents home now. I couldn't wait to leave and be on my own and it was a good thing for me to have some independence for a few years before I married and had a child. I could afford to though, I had roomates and an apartment. I love Maryland and it's the only state I would want to live in but it is expensive.
So good to hear this golden oldie once again. Interesting to hear background info, what the lyrics mean and how you related to them. You are so blessed if you get along so well with your Mom, Dad or both. Italian, Asian & other cultures live a lot longer with their parents. I wasn't that close emotionally to my Mom or Dad. So do your own thing while still respecting your parents. You will know deep in your heart when you need to leave.
There's an offbeat movie I'd love you to react to, The Commitments. It's about a group of Irish kids putting together a soul band. It's based on a story from one of my favorite authors, Roddy Doyle. I think you will love and appreciate it. It was hard for me to find elements of soul or blackness in the 80s so I started looking around the world. I found it in strange places being reflected to us as love letters to American Black culture. It amazed me to see ourselves cherished and seen by the world.
I saw them when they toured in 1986 or 1987. I was interning at a radio station in San Francisco during college and we got to meet and hang out with the band before and after the show. They were phenomenal.
Yes it is on the soundtrack (FROM LOVE AND BASKETBALL), but covered by a female, "Angie Stone"...You can listen to it hear: ua-cam.com/video/8kYTwxCi6b8/v-deo.html
Love the song, love Simply Red, love your reaction (as usual). I'm probably mistaken in this, but it sounded to me like you've set things up kind of all or nothing in your mind, re leaving home, etc. If I'm not way off the mark in this, maybe you could reframe it so that you think only in terms of baby steps...e.g., think of a few places you'd like to see, choose one, go for a few days, maybe with one or more friends (or go visit a friend from elsewhere and stay with that friend for a few days). Then do that again, working up to longer stretches. Don't think of, as you mentioned, uprooting and starting over elsewhere until you've found a place you like enough to keep visiting, and then take the rest in small steps as well. And if I misunderstood you, oops, sorry! :o)
your mic was not working for quite a bit in the middle so we missed a lot of what you said. the music worked though. i looked it up.angie stone sang the song in the movie. the blonde teacher played sheila jackson in the og uk show shameless.that the US has it's own version of. the woman on the dock at the beginning is actress, producer and fashion designer.she was married to jude law (dumbledore in fantastic beasts)97-03.she's the mother of 3 of his 7 kids.she was in bram stokers dracula.

I am so happy to see someone react to Simply Red. I always thought this man had a simply soulful voice and was simply under rated in the USA.
Angie Stone sang the cover of this song for the movie Love & Basketball.

Thank you!
It is scary leaving home, but you're strong enough. Either, you'll know when it's time, or something or someone will inspire your decision.
Great song!
Hi thanks for reacting to this beautiful song.
It's always been a great song. Golden oldie for sure.

Gingers DO HAVE soul !
The version you're thinking of from Love and Basketball is a cover by Jill Scott.
Someone else says it was Angie Stone.
Didn’t catch where you live, but dude, you got to travel. Music takes you on a journey. But there is physical journey too.

No sound when you talked
Why did you think this was a woman singingiing this?
I can’t give this a thumbs up when your mic was out through most of this. Sorry.
You LOST Your Audio for your commentary - No sound coming out of your mouth 😕
He got it back after the song ended!
