The name Steppenwolf derives from the 1927 novel, Steppenwolf, by German author Hermann Hesse, which captures his struggle with isolation and spirituality at the time. The novel takes its name from the German word for steppe wolf, a species of grey wolves that live near the Caspian Sea.

There ya go brother ... keep slapping those eb's 'n' ivories! ... 🎹
**The comment below is from a person who had the rare opportunity of knowing the wife of John Kay and then hearing the backstory of #MAGIC CARPET RIDE from her also.**[Songfacts]
"Big Bbc from Los Angeles ...
I hate to burst everyone’s bubble about magic carpet ride being about drugs. Ha! It was not!!
In the early 80s I was acquainted with John Kay’s wife and himself. She had invited me and a friend of mine to a small venue intimate Steppenwolf concert. Just her, myself, and my friend sat at a small table center stage... As we were talking before the concert began, I asked her what the song magic carpet ride was about. She said... “A lot of people think it was about drugs. It’s not!!....
.... It was about a really Bitchin quadraphonic stereo system that John had just set up in their living room.
In the middle of the room was a very large Persian rug (hence, Magic Carpet Ride, and Aladdin). John sat on the carpet in the middle of the room with the stereo cranked up, letting “The sound take him away“.... which inspired him to write the song “ Magic carpet ride“. Make any sense to y’all now? Ha!
Also, the “ Little girl“ in the song was his wife, who he called over to sit with him on the rug and experience the new Bitchin sound system!
Music is supposed to take you away. Right?... It takes you on a journey.
Funny how if you tell a lie long enough, It becomes the truth to most people. Kind of like that man-made global warming B.S. that most people have wound up buying into. Ha!
Well, that should clear up that misnomer! Just the facts Jack!
Maybe next time I’ll debunk the Beatles Lucy in the sky with diamonds song being about an acid trip. Which it was not! Ha!"
    Great reaction!

John and Jutta have been married since... forever? They met in 1965. Going on 60 years.

The 7" single version cuts out most of the instrumental section.

Saw Steppenwolf in Dec ‘69 in Memphis TN…fronted by the Turtles and the Byrds…they were the shit then.

Other commenters explained the origin of the name but the band didn't choose it because of any connection with the novel, it was just an awesomely cool name. Although it was required reading in the counterculture. Kinda dense actually. John Kay was actually German and legally blind. The greatest rock singer ever. The noise was feedback. Jefferson Airplane did that too to introduce songs

John Kay has a biography he published about 15 years ago, IIRC, and he writes about growing up in Eastern side of Germany after WWII, needing eye surgery, and his family's getting him over/under/through/around the Berlin Wall and to Canada, where surgery partially restored his vision. He has an incredible memory for detail.

@@raygunsforronnie847 Kay never had eye surgery, he just needed better food and nutrition and doctors that he didn't have where he was at 5 years old. I asked him about 12 years ago why he didn't have to wear the shades anymore and he said "we finally realized if we had the lights coming from BEHIND me it doesn't bother me". I asked him if he had any eye work done like Lasik or anything else and he said "no, nothing would help" and I believe that, sadly.

I saw these guys in a bar in the 80s but passed out in my chair the entire time. Their name is the title of a Herman Hesse book.

I think that was the album version. No, wait - The singing at the end makes it the 45. Definitely Maybe.
