This song came out when I was a young 23-year-old, and now I'm 60. The lyrics "well I've wasted all my tears, wasted all of those years" resonate even more, especially when you have life's regrets... please try hard, and don't have regrets when you're 60.
im 58 and remember Simply Red clearly....I was 21 and immigrated to the US 3 years earlier.....I know about regrets and this track had the same effect as you. May our 60s be the best, good soul. God Bless.
I'm 63, and fell in love with this song when it came out when I was a young woman. It's beautiful yet heartbreaking. I always heard that "Red" wrote this from his personal experience, having been in a less than loving home & ran away. I will have to look that up now! I'm curious if that is accurate. Btw, I went thru lots of crap in my 20s but then found a good man, got married & had a daughter. She's 28 now & I've been married to her dad for 33 years. No regrets on those years at all!! Just wish I had better health, but you can't have it all!!
@@lumpyfishgravy Simply Red seems to always sing covers like this reaction song and that Harold and the Blue Notes classic, usually from Soul groups and not as good as the originals
What’s even sadder when you read the story of his childhood, others mentioned that his mother left him and it was also difficult for him to be brought up just by his father who had a lot of issues too. He met up with his mother many years later just once I think. She said she had no regrets of letting him go! Can you imagine a mom saying something like this? You are just about to find out what it’s like to be a mom and you could never imagine doing this to your child!
I believe she contacted him and told him she had cancer and she was living in the US I believe, he flew out to see her only to discover it was all a lie. That was the end of their relationship. It was why he did not marry until 2010 . So sad but what an incredible gift he has and shares with us.
We used to watch Mick singing aged 16 in a local club where he collected glasses and sang in his break with my then boyfriend's band. Such a talented singer.
Fun Fact: He wrote this song when he was a teenager, it's about the fact that his Mother left him and his father when he was just a young boy, he grew up without his Mother and it broke his heart. "Wishing for the arms of Mater (Mother)." That's why he sings so soulfully. Also, Mick Hucknall is one of the truly great blue-eyed soul singers of all time.
I love Simply Red and I’ve always loved this song! They are a British band and this was their first big stateside hit in 1985. Mick Hucknall is the lead singer and he is one of the best “blue-eyed soul” singers to come out of the eighties!❤❤
Kudos to Tim Kellett for the trumpet solo. He was the keyboard player as well as trumpeter in Simply Red. He left in 1991 to pursue other opportunities.

He was originally in legendary Manchester band, Duritti Column. And then went on to form Olive in the late-90s, who had a massive sad-dancefloor hit called "You're Not Alone"
One of those classic, “I thought he was black!” reactions. Mick Hucknell taking his rightful place amongst the greats of this list. Bobby Caldwell, Bee Gees, The Righteous Brothers, Tom Jones, KC & The Sunshine Band, Joss Stone and Hall & Oates. LOL 😂😂
Simply Red and Sade were two of the best British soulful bands of the 80s. Mick Hucknall finally decided to live in Italy but occasionally appears on stage usually with an orchestra these days. I forgot to mention 'Money's to tight to mention'. Check out the live version.
Another Manchester legend. This was one of my late mam's favourite songs and every time I hear it I well up with emotion. Simply Red cos he's a full on Manchester United fan who play in red, Nice reaction. BTW before Simply Red he was ina full on punk band.
Lex, I too thought he was black because the song was played on all the R&B stations. Same thing happened when I first heard The Righteous Brothers back in the 60's. Soul truly has no color. And Brad and Lex, I really enjoy your reactions! You two have great chemistry together and will make wonderful parents. Blessings to you both and the little one that's on the way🙏🏻
This is called northern soul in the UK. Really great voice. Boy George from Culture Club has a great voice as well. I am happy you listened to this. Best wishes for the baby!
It's not called northern soul , northern soul was when clubs in the North of England played black American soul records, twisted wheel Wigan pier and places like that
Hold on. Northern Soul was a taste not a genre. Musically a revival of US RnB & Soul in clubs of Northern (mainly NW) England. It was also about the drug that fueled the all-nighters - and the identifying fashion. Like I said - a taste. It did however give birth to the dance-soul fusion of the late 70s-80s and from there, the Baggy sound, Madchester and so on.
From the early northern soul of MONEY`S TOO TIGHT [TO MENTION] and HOLDING BACK THE YEARS through the sophisticated Motown groove of IT`S ONLY LOVE and IF YOU DON`T KNOW ME BY NOW to Nineties pop driven classics such as STARS and FAIRGROUND.
This song is about his mother abandoning him and his father when he was 3 ("Wishing for the arms of Mater"). She moved to the US and never returned. Caused a huge hole in his heart.
Simply Red's fantastic cover of the Harold Melvin hit from the '60's 'If You Don't Know Me By Now' is just wonderful Please guys, react to it one day soon! 🙋♂
One of the best songs of the 80s. Mick Hucknalls voice really conveyed the deep soulfulness of the song. You need to hear their cover of If You Don’t Know Me By Now. It’s pretty great
Brad & Lex, you'll like their first hit single "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)"!! Mick Hucknall on lead vocals. edit - You'll love St. Paul and The Broken Bones- "Broken Bones and Pocket Change" & "Call Me"!!!! Its like he's channelling Otis Redding!!
I saw him live years ago, at one point in the concert he sat on the stage, no one else, no music at all and sang a song. Was one of the best things I’ve heard, his voice was fantastic.
The band was originally called "red", at one of their early gigs the stage announcer ask Mick for the bands name to which Mick replied Red but the announcer didn't hear him properly so asked Mick again to which Mick replied its just simply red so the announcer announced them on stage as Simply Red and the name stuck.
From an older guy, yes he does sound black. He sings with soul that's why your mother played it. Check out Soul Man by the Blue Brothers for another example.
A big difference between the 80' music and today, is the mix of black and white people in the bands/videos. The late '70s and early '80s were hard times for the people but we stood together🤟
Such a mellow song...I remember hearing it in the middle of the night in the newborn nursery when I was feeding the babies and rocking them. Boy, this takes me back....

The Beatles , Thin Lizzy , Black Sabbath , The police , Nirvana and so so many more , probably would have to take time to sit and gather to hear all.... but that is why we have fires , so every tale can be told for centuries to remember and now , we have songs , but why not have Both ...peace
In `85 Simply Red (Mick Hucknall) was the first musician to bring soul music back to the fore. Back then nobody thought after punk music that there could ever be a revival of soul music. But Mick Hucknall did, and it hit like an earthquake. Thanks for sharing and best wishes@all from hamburg (germany)
I listen to a old retired NFL football player on the radio and they talk about music from time to time and he says he calls this stuff "Blue Eyed Soul" and he really loves it when its done well :)
It still amazes me to this day that people just assume that powerful/ soulful singers are black.... I'm just as guilty because growing up my mum would listen to Billy Ocean and I thought he was white until I saw the album cover. It warms my heart when their identities are revealed because it proves the point that deep down there is no differences between the people of this planet!! Thank you for reacting to this band, Mick had one of the best voices ever to sing a tune and I'm so pleased you enjoyed it.
I know what you mean. I'm Black, and i remember when my mom used to play Procol Harum (A Whiter Shade of Pale) and Timi Yuro back in the 60's, we thought they were both Black. Procol Harum was a British band, and Timi is American and part Italian. Timi had such a powerful, magnificent voice, one of my all time favorites to this day. My parents listened to anybody that they liked, Brenda Lee, Tom Jones, Dean Martin, Engelbert, it didn't matter, good music is good music, no matter who sings it. All of the above artists have stayed with me all these decades, and thank goodness for CD's instead of those old worn out snap crackle pop LP's. Listen to " Make The World Go Away" by Timi. RIP Ms. Timi Yuro and Dean Martin, and to Mom and Dad.❤
Thinking someone is black/white has nothing to do with how well or powerful they sing. Robert Plant has a powerful voice, but no one thinks he's black. It has to do with the timbre of each voice, and qualities within different timbres that are normally associated with black or white vocals.
So poetic and introspective. Strangled by the wishes of pater. Hoping for the arms of mater. Get to me the sooner or later. Mick wrote this at 17! Such an amazing song that stands the test of time.
Whitby is also famous for its Dracula connection. It is where Dracula bounded off a shipwreck in the form of a dog and bounded up the 199 steps to St Mary’s church. Mick Hucknall is seen walking up the steps in the video.
Such sorrow in his voice. What some parents do to their children...😥 Some of the world's greatest artists share their pain in beautiful ways. Absolutely love this song. 👍❤🤙
Another song everyone should push for is Mandolin. Rain as it is around the same time frame , another fun might make smile is Red Red Wine -87-88 was such a great year for music
Grew up listening to this in my teens- and have continued to through the years-And man, oh man, it really resonates in a certain , different kind of way, especially now that I’m so much older.🙁 The-days, weeks and YEARS.. goin by soooo fast! Ugh! Love this beautiful song though- I can’t remember at the moment, but IF y’all haven’t yet. y’all really gotta hear his song called-“ if you don’t know me by now.” Another great hit of his- 💞💙
Superb. Another great ballad by Simply Red is "For Your Babies". And to speed up the tempo a bit, "Moneys Too Tight to Mention" and "Something Got me Started"
Saw Simply Red in concert, Toronto CNE grandstand. Headliner was Psychedelic Furs, Simply Red and the Blow Monkees. Amazing concert and he was as good live. Great memories.❤️ Btw, Money too tight to mention. Another banger from same album.
Blow Monkees and Hipsway were one of my fave "blue-eyed" soul. I saw Hipsway in DC in the 80s at 9:30 club. You are the only person I have ever heard mentioning Blow Monkees. Loved them.....Money too tight to mention was my fave Simply Red song and video.
Y'all are so dang cute! Lex, I couldn't help but laugh when you said "Smokey, somthing....." Hahahahaha!! Smokey Robinson my dear! Your mom has great taste in music! Great reaction. You really need to check out "If You Don't Know Me By Now" by Simply Red. You will absolutely love it!!!
Simply Red is one of the few bands I will tell you where the live versions are just as good as the studio. The man can sing flawlessly and you should watch one of the live performances of this song.
You really can't go wrong with "Simply Red". This song was from their debut album "Picture Book". The title track and "Money's Too Tight To Mention" are great songs. Also, "Stars" and " Sunrise".
Simply Red is still making music today with their last album going to #6 on the British Charts. They've been much more successful in the UK and Europe with over 35 top 40 songs in the UK and 6 #1 Albums. Stars is the 11th biggest selling studio album of all time in the UK. Here are some suggestions. Holding Back the Years is from their 1st Album Picture Book. Listen to If you Don't know me By Now a remake of the Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes single that featured Teddy Pendergrass on vocals. It went to #1 in the US in 1989. . They are very hard to categorize as their music is a bit R&B, Jazz, Funk, Pop, and even a little Reggae. I'd suggest besides what I've mentioned Stars, For Your Babies, You've Got it, Angel featuring the Fugees Lauryn Hill from the movie Set it Off. Sad Old Red, The Live in Hamburg Video is great. Sunrise from 2003's Home which also had a remake of You Make me feel Brand New. ( He usually does a remake on every album, it's his way of paying tribute to the artists he loved growing up) Thrill Me (Funk) From 2019 I don't do Down or Thinking of you both Funk. If You like Reggae try Night Nurse.
Just rediscovering this song. I heard it back when I was a very young adult and never paid a lot of attention to the lyrics etc. Never knew who sang it. It's beautiful! And wow, he's got a gorgeous voice. So for me, it's new and I'm loving it.
Watching this now, I havnt seen it since it came out when i was about 11. Never really liked Simply Red but seeing this gave me goosebumps for some reason, brings back lots of memories. Funny how music can do that to you.
I'm so glad you discovered this song. It's a very melancholy, yet soulful and beautiful song. It really needs to be heard by younger generations. Its one of those songs that I listened to growing up in the 80s, when I was feeling down, just to put a voice to how I was feeling. To get the sense that someone else knew the pain I was feeling was uplifting and comforting somehow!
Love that the video was shot in Whitby on the north east coast of England. I recently stayed in the apartment he is in at 1:14 and only just realised watching it now!
Can I just say to you both, that my wife and I find your page so refreshing. The way you want and dragged is so funny we laugh and cry.. best news site in a long time. We love Andrew up most of this music. It's fun to watch y'all figure out the meaning of the song as you go along. Y'all are so funny. PS Achilles Last Stand we always thought was a battle. But it's really about Robert Plant the lead singer taking his wife on a Moroccan vacation. Look it up the lyrics All make sense and you're like wow they're talkin about having fun on a Moroccan Island and it is no deeper than that thanks again for the hours of enjoyment

Grew up listening to this in my teens- and have continued to through the years-And man, oh man, it really resonates in a certain , different kind of way, especially now that I’m so much older.🙁 The-days, weeks and YEARS.. goin by soooo fast! Ugh! Love this beautiful song though- I can’t remember at the moment, but IF y’all haven’t yet. y’all really gotta hear his song called-“ if you don’t know me by now.” Another great hit of his-
💞💙
Great memories.❤️
Btw, Money too tight to mention.
Great voice--the key to the song by far.
Saw them live a few months ago, Mick is still rocking! And it was one of the last performances with Dave Clayton on keyboards, a music machine!
"Stars" and "Sunrise" are amazing ❤... you cannot go wrong with Simply Red...own all their albums/ Cds
Great reaction. Bte Lex is beautiful, cute as a button with those freckles...!❤❤
Can’t help but well up at this m, literally gives me goosebumps and reminds me of my Mother. It’s incredible!
I’m a 60s baby and this is one of my favorite songs it’s one of those songs that makes you think about the past it also makes me sad 😢❤❤❤
This is just a classic 80s song that will live on for years. Such a great song.
A voice like beautiful melted chocolate, so smooth
The lead singer wrote this song at 17 yrs, this is a 80's song also from all the hairband music from that era.
One of the all time greatest songs...Iconic.
This really is one of the most amazing songs ever... I could never get sick of listening to this song. NEVER!!
Simply Red is one of the few bands I will tell you where the live versions are just as good as the studio. The man can sing flawlessly and you should watch one of the live performances of this song.
I've only just realised where the video was shot after watching a UA-camrs documentary about the place a few days ago. It's Whitby.
One of the greatest songs of all time. Definitely in my top 20 of all time, maybe top 10.
Great group and great singer.
A good track to react to by simply red is.
FAIRGROUND. Absolutely brilliant track .
Great reaction .
My favourite song by Simply Red, one of Manchester's greatest bands. His voice is simply beautiful.
The video was filmed in a small coastal town called Whitby in Yorkshire, UK. They do nice Fish & Chips there 😋
Just rediscovering this song. I heard it back when I was a very young adult and never paid a lot of attention to the lyrics etc. Never knew who sang it. It's beautiful! And wow, he's got a gorgeous voice. So for me, it's new and I'm loving it.
Love Brad's shirt! Pretenders was an amazing album. Brass in Pocket, Precious, Tattooed Love Boys and all the rest.
Many people thought Mick Hucknall was a black singer....great reaction guys thanks!
This was one of my dad’s favorite songs. I played it at his funeral.
Love that the video was shot in Whitby on the north east coast of England. I recently stayed in the apartment he is in at 1:14 and only just realised watching it now!
MicK Hucknell is Chronically under rated by todays music buffs,
Love Simply Red
One of my favorite songs ever!
