Let us all step back and give Wickie a round of applause. Clearly his work takes a shedload of time, and all of his tutorials are available for free! You are a fuckin' legend man!
Thank you so very much!! I needed this!! I am in music school and its a joke how they teach us. So far learning the console has been : 10 guys standing in front of the console, holding cable and guessing what to do, people speak over eachother, I see hands moving the whole time, trying to see something and run from left to right while the guessing race keeps going. I learn NOTHING. And them I am told to read the manual. I am already reading books and manuals and for own production I already learn all the other topics from different source. This video alone explained to me in such simple way what the teacher tells me to just somehow know.
It definitely ties in nicely with what's on your UA-cam page, and only 8 dollars? Anyone who's watched your videos has already received WAY more than 8$ worth of knowledge. Time to just go pick up a copy of the book too and support more incredible content like this! Keep up the awesome work! Thanks again!!!!
Wick, Stumbled into one of your videos a few days ago- since then, I've gone through just about all the rest. Thank you for your time and effort, putting all this information out there for everyone at no cost. Your explanations are very easy to understand and the speed in which you deliver information is perfect.
"A bus is a summing line where different channels are summed together" Bus is a very hard concept to define, and this is perhaps the best definition I've heard.
Finally, a very well done explanation & general tutorial about the basics of a home recording mixer with a tape machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found an old Teac A-3440 4 track recorder at an estate sale & your video is very helpful concerning a number of issues for us "dummies."
Hi, It depends on how it's being implemented in the studio. Many studio's nowadays actually use all three; -Audio Interface for analogue/digital and digital/analogue conversion. -DAW on the computer to record and easily edit on. -Mixing console to mix on. The reason why many studio's still like using a mixing console is because of the sound these give. It's a type of saturation and harmonic distortion. It can be somewhat 'emulated' with software plugins, but still it's a different sound.
Thanks y'all! It's good to be back :) It has been a really hectic time lately, which included doing a tour in France & Italy together with 'The Word' from Shanghai, doing client-projects and a lot of piled-up work! But I'm on it again and part-2 is almost halfway done already.. Keep you guys posted. Cheers!
I *almost* feel bad for watching all these videos and getting so much knowledge for free. I did pick up a copy of your book for the iPad too. I'm really impressed with that as well, it's great to have some of the more important reference items/graphics handy/ available offline.
4:17 What does "a portion of the signal" mean? I don't believe an aux "steals" a portion of the signal from the master mix. Or does it? My understanding is a signal from a channel can [also] be sent to an aux bus[es] for, say, a monitor mix without affecting the master mix.
I'm a roadie the ones like the ones they use for live concerts they're crazy heavy, I'm lifting one of these and the lights is a butt clenching, some of these, lighting and LED screens are worth anything from 100,000 to a few 1,000,000, I was surprised how something so small can be worth a few 100,000 like this once I was helping the sound technician set up the sound for strictly come dancing and he was like "don't worry about tripping over the wire and dropping the mic it's only worth a few 100,000" 🤣, just a mic to test, mix the sound & move the speakers to get the best set up for the venue absolute madness.
Hi Wick, what is the difference between grouping and bussing? I thought they were the same thing but then in this video you talked about them separately. Thanks!
This is clear, but i still got some questions. 1.The Mix Bus----"so select the source the mix bus, so you can listen to the mix over the speaker" does it mean that the signal has already mixed but hasn't recorded yet? 2, If the signal is MAIN OUT to the tape recorder, does it mean that the signal has already mixed and can't be changed? 2.2 If it can be change, why would you go to the master tape recorder before going to the master section which could do adjustment? Why don't we make things perfect before sending to the master tape recorder?
This might be a dumb question lol, but does the tape recorder ever chew the tape like a tape deck? If so does it ruin the recording and you have to do it from scratch?
Hi @Emusqueak, I have recently moved and have just set up all my stuff. I will be doing complete mixing tutorials very soon! I have spoken to some really awesome bands and I've found a good place to record. I will provide the multitracks and will do full mixing sessions with those tracks, so all you guys can just download the same material to practice with as I'm using in the videos. I hope you guys will love that! It will take up some time to have it all finished but I'm really excited and looking forward to realise this project very soon, but I hope you guys can be a little bit patient as it is quite a job preparing all this! If there's any updates on this project I will post it on the WickieMedia website and social media channels. Hope that helps out. Wick
+emusqueak To get back to you on that, I have a mixing tutorial where I'm doing exactly that! You can also download the multitracks of the session to mix along with the same tracks. ua-cam.com/video/l3MfluPFbzM/v-deo.html
Seen some amazing things and amazing people like Paul McCartney even know he did my head in a bit as I did a 24 hour shift and because he's a vegan we had to eat nothing but vegan food 🤣😅, I met and worked for The Electric Light Orchestra I'm only 26 but that was mind blowing as they're one of my favourite groups hearing them just knowing I was right behind the stage, was over welming to the point I almost cried being a part of it but also not being able to watch them live and see all the stage light up, they have some crazy visuals even the stage they stood on lit up too, I've done loads of people from George Ezra, Cold Play to Slayer & Anthrax, me lifes had some lows like real lows but my highs have been real highs I'm a lucky guy, my sister also has a lot to do with the music industry too so I get to go to concerts for free meet some crazy people through her, her ex husband was a drummer for one of the ex singers of Iron Maiden even if he was the worst one who was also my mothers partner at the time and I went on tour with them as a kid, I've seen some things what they say about the rock music industry is true I must have been about 8 when I went to knock on the hotel door of what I thought was meant to be my sisters room, little did I know she swapped with their merchandise sales the dude opened the door in a robe and in the background there were two naked chicks lay on the bed playing around giggling, the dude was just like your sister is in such and such a room we swapped last night, he chucked me a few red bulls and said you'll need them we're off in a few hours to a different place and we need you to take some of the kit on stage gave me a smirk and a wink as if to say you're not stupid you know what we were up to. 🤣😅
"Pretty much the same" buddy a console is merely a midi controller on steroids. It controls the program the same a keyboard and mouse does. Except it's much more efficient...... And expensive. A console is literally the same as Alt+Shift+E. It's a keyboard shortcut 😂
I got more from this than some courses I paid hundreds for and got absolutely nothing from. Brilliant, great work! Extremely helpful.
hehe you got scammed

Internet is beautiful place. You can find here a lot of cat videos. Or you can find a lot of knowledge and this is perfect example! :D

i had a question very basic one what is the difference between fader and a gain knob ?

so helpful bro!
Ohhh yeeeeee.....Welcome back!!!
what program do you use to make your video ?
what's the function of a mixing console when working with DAWs in computers? why do you see studios using them instead of an audio interface?
This might be a dumb question lol, but does the tape recorder ever chew the tape like a tape deck? If so does it ruin the recording and you have to do it from scratch?
I think I love you! thank you so much for that!
ei! can you tell me 4 examples of in line consoles and 4 of split consoles?
thanks for the easy explanation! T^T
a mixer's basic task isn't to mix several mono tracks into a stereo mix. you could very easily be mixing mono signals into a mono final mix.
Is there a video explaining how to actually mix, say an 8 track recording??

It's not. A console does everything by itself, a controller needs external software
Tuturial telling too much of info. This is not for 1 level of learning..
