I MUST give you props on this video. I'm a master in the digital world but struggled to understand outgear and A/D. This video 100x better than everyone I've watch from "master engineers" and companies. Didn't even have to rewind! Amazing!
This was really helpful for me. A lot of videos like to talk about consoles, but you actually got your hands dirty and showed us how the back of it is routed and how it actually functions in a session.
Yeah not a problem, and I totally understand. When I first got the mixing console, I really wasn’t sure where to start! Then after you start working with it, it quickly becomes very manageable and you learn exactly how and where the signal flows
i dont mean to be offtopic but does anyone know a trick to get back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb lost my password. I would love any assistance you can offer me.
Wish there had been a video like this when I was starting to get my head around this stuff years ago. Thanks Weezna. Also just wanted to say I love your studio - particularly that your gear is well chosen, customised and sprinkled with some great equipment but intelligently, not just top shelf 'everything' like you see in some YT productions. To me, shows you've put in the hard yards over the years and this comes through in your approach. I wish you great continued success! Keep the content flowing!
Adam Tulk thank you so much for saying that. Yes I have definitely gone through lots of equipment over the years and there is a piece of gear for everyone of my needs. I do absolutely love modifying and customizing gear so it really turns into more of a hobby for me! Thanks for watching and I appreciate the kind words
Thank you. I’ve been pondering the different routing options since I just got my Soundcraft Ghost back from a friend after many years. It’s 24 channel with also another 24 secondary’tape returns’ so essentially its 48 summable inputs. Being that it’s for my home pre-production/writing/recording setup I’m hesitant to route everything to my patchbays & more keen to use the 8 buss outputs to route to the soundcard. The thing I really enjoy about that configuration is that I just have to set everything to unity on the daw when recalling sessions. I personally find it more productive and inspiring to spend as little time outside the box and treating the computer more like a linear tape machine/hard disk recorder obviously with the advantages of a DAW but also being set up to treat it as a destructive recording configuration so I can make more spontaneous commitments [ie print things with their current channel settings/processing/fx/etc] and i have found my recordings / sound design / composition decisions come together more quick & succinctly with far less need for post processing. It REALLY helps to have your video playing as I look over my own rig, far more than doodling a zillion theoretical configurations 😅 THANK YOU AGAIN
I found this video so helpful as I have the gl3300 and have been looking everywhere for something like this online. So thank you very much for your time and effort for putting these videos up you have finally helped me get my studio up and running
Thanks Weezna, I am a big fan of yours, been following the channel for a while. This was really helpful and very easy and intuitive to understand. Appreciate your efforts man. Looking for more videos in future. Thanks mate!
RecordingStudio9.com thank you thank you. Yeah after I got the studio back up and running last year, I have switched how it has been used four times now. This is finally how I’m going to keep it, with my current workflow
Great video..Congratulations sir. First time I've seen a very clear giving all the steps when we have to setup a full studio recording step by step and its signal flow.
Maaaan I love you for this. I can't afford for now to go to a sound engineer school. But this is what I needed to get a very solid starting knowledge. Keep going!
I do enjoy videos like this. I don't have any of the stuff you have (LOL) but I like see how the routing and recording is done on analog consoles. Thanks
This is my dream setup…. What ever digital gears and DAW come in market I believe that mixing in analogue mixing console is the ultimate mixing setup we can get and it’s always my wish to do mixing in analogue even if we record in a DAW…… any way thanks to you sir for this vedio, it was a great vedio……….
I know a Lexicon MPX 100 unit when i see one. I had mine since.. 2000. The only downside is the thin wire on their Wall wart adapter that it came with. I do love the colored cabling, which i am working on. Makes things a lot more easier to know what goes with what, and to where.
Great vid man. Just picked up a 40ch gl3300 and looking to run the direct outs into my preSonus Studiolive 24ch for tracking. Wondering if I need to change any factory settings to the console to use EQ and preamp section for some flavor before digitizing. I'll also be attempting analog summing so not sure if I should split 24ch into post fade and 16 into prefade pertaining to TRS direct outs. Your vids are definitely helping me figure this board out. I just sourced and ordered parts to build a DC power source for it. Ready to fire it up and record some drums and guitars 🙌
this dude never worked on a real Neve console. lol. will never hire this type of bozo. andrew schepp is a great guy but not even in my top ten producer/mixer/engineer
Shazamm the iPad Producer Ha ha yeah it’s been tough finding time to do these videos. Fortunately the studio has been busy which obviously occupies a good chunk of my time. But I think I will finally have more time in the future to continue with these videos
I have always searched for such a video and I could not find it. it's very comprehensive and I have really learnt a lot. I will no longer be afraid to walk into a studio with such routing. I have a question or rather a clarification. on your stereo channels, is it the custom that you made or it is originally stereo?
Trevor absolutely, glad to help out. So those four stereo channels come standard with any of the GL series. I just moved the location of where the stereo channels typically are on this console
how many analog external compressors needed for 16 tracks? i saw 2 in your rack, but do you use same those 2s compeessors in 16 tracks or u got some more for the rest 14 tracks?
What units are you using as your meter bridge? I watched several vids of your👍, looking for the one where you go through your setup....nevermind I found it. Good work and thanks for the info
i have an analog mixer and a digital multiport sound interface. i would like to route all channels of my mixer to my sound interface and the soundcard output to the main mix of my mixer. would you recomment i wire the sends on the mixer to the sound interface inputs and the return on the mixer for capturing the output of the sound interface?
Very interesting and informative video really I liked it, thanks for sharing GOD BLESS.. Won't it be possible for you take the direct out from the two FX Returns and send them to the A/D Converter as FX Return channels?? Just wanted to know. Great explainer video btw!!!
Thank you so much!!. Can I also use a Mackie Onyx 3280 and have a connection through that SSL Converter as well? I take it it would work with just about any Console? Thank you
STM FILMZ At one point it was an Allen Heath GL4000 but it has been heavily modified. Now it’s a very clean punchy console with an added 19 inch rack middle section, custom meter bridge with dual frequency analyzers, custom armrest, lots of output transformers, some mods done to the channel strips, and rebuild power supplies!
It really depends on the mixer, but in a lot of cases yes. The more important part is that it has a direct output for each channel. Not every single mixer has this, and a lot of the new digital mixers don’t. There are options to add direct outputs as an additional option, but you would have to check for that particular mixer
I am setting up to use an analog 48 channel Mackie onyx and was wondering which interface wound be better? The universal audio pros with 8 channels are really nice but they are outrageous my expensive. Is there a better option?
Hello there! hey, what do you think about these preamps, are they silent? sounds good like any another interface preamp out there?... I would like tracking drums with 18 mics and the Presonus quantum 4848 32 lines I/O. I would like to know if this console or another with direct outs are a good solution. I'm a little scare with that Big external power supply, for noise or somethings like that. In your experience, can you tell me what do you think? Thanks, I'll wish an Allen heath GL4800 or GL4000 like you.
Weezna, the converters and card you are using (SSL) are not available anymore, if someone wanted to emulate your setup for a gl4800 what would be the recommended hardware options regarding converters?
What I want to know is how you connect your ADC to the computer, and then from the computer to the DAC. That's the part I really need to see. Optical? Does that mean I go straight into the back of my CPU using a tos link from the ADC? When I look at the back of my computer, I don't see any ADAT or Tos link in's or out's. What do I need in order to connect an ADC to my computer so I can send the sound signal to my DAW.
I MUST give you props on this video. I'm a master in the digital world but struggled to understand outgear and A/D. This video 100x better than everyone I've watch from "master engineers" and companies. Didn't even have to rewind! Amazing!

Finally some that’s actually explains it right. I’ve been looking for this type of video.Thank you!

Good vid. I love the old A&H desks. I had the Saber Plus 24/24/16/2 back in the day. Made a lot of great recordings on it.
I keep coming back to this video.

This is a fantastic Video ! Helped me out alot as I use a Soundcraft MH3. I really hope you can do more like this.. BIG THANKS! Merry Christmas .
My Dad has, and back in the early 80's recorded on, the exact same Sony consumer model of reel to really machine.
Hey Bro, The studio desk was more than enough for me to subscribe... But definitely a topic...
Amazing Video. Amazing video Tutorial. Regards from Portugal Lisbon. What analog mixer do you have ?
Great video, thanks so much
Super well done video. Just in time.
Curious what model AD/DA convertors are you using. Thanks....

From the a/d converter interface to mixer.
Hey, great video!! I was wondering if there was a way to have your dbx compressor come AFTER the EQ of the console. Is this possible?
Can you make a video explaining what a channel strip consist of? For us new people:)
