  • In this episode I'm going to take a look at the channel-strip of a mixing console.
    The signals on our mixing console run through the channel-strips, the way these are built up is pretty much an universal standard.
    We're going to take a look at the channelstrip of a Solid State Logic console to understand all the features we will run into. Smaller mixers will offer fewer features than a mixing console of this caliber, but still there will be a lot of similarities as we will find out later this season.

    as everyone here pointed out - You, Sir, are amazing and your work and knowledge sharing is infinitely loved. I truly hope you will be glad to know that some good music that will be coming out in the world will be there thanks to you. For us, the 'bedroom producers' and certainly, not just for us, you are and have been a bless. Life will smile upon you always! Namaste! :)

    This is SO helpful! I used to dabble with hardware when I was a vocalist, but that was 30 years ago. Reviewing these basics makes working in a DAW make so much more sense. I love your channel! I'm going through this series via the SoundGym site, which is great, too. Just way over priced. They need to work on the pricing structure. $10/month isn't bad if you can pay it monthly, but $25/month is outrageous! They'd make a lot more money if they made it more affordable. When I have the 1 or 2nd highest score, I know there can't be very many people on there!

    Well it really depends on what you're doing and how sure you are about what you are applying.
    I personally would avoid recording signals into daw/tape WITH eq/dynamics/etc...
    I would try to record as 'unprocessed' as possible.
    Than during the mixing stage we can equalize, apply dynamics, fx, etc, and still be be completely free in those choices.

    You have to be hired to make every manual for hardware and software. In video format. Most other manuals are not so easy to understand to feel. And costs too much time. When it can just be explained the right way. The way you explain.

    One mistake (at 6.02): On SSL AWS consoles, the FLIP button in the input section switches between the channel path's microphone and line-level inputs. It DOES NOT do a fader swap between the channel and monitor paths or swap the input source. Why SSL chose to label the control this way (rather than "LINE" as one finds on other brands) is anyone's guess.
    Otherwise, it's a nice video.

    So, I would really need to know how to properly record a sound. I guess it has to never reach the red but stay between green and yellow? Because the first cover I've recorded sounds bad because it was always in the red but I thought I had to have a nice big soundwave haha.. I downloaded some guitar tracks and checked their wave and now I'm using that to calibrate my sound. I'd really like an in-dept explanation on that.

    2:09 I think it's worth noting about phantom power (+48V) that this will destroy ribbon microphones, and isn't needed for others, so be sure to know what kind of power your microphone needs before you go toggling this switch!

    or the raw audio passes through the inserts/EQ everytime you playback them, and you only apply those permanently in the final master? I'm confused, I've only used audio interfaces haha.

  • @orangeboiiiii
    @orangeboiiiii 11 років тому

    so you can't undo/redo/tweak inserts/EQ done with the console right? if the modulated signal goes into the DAW/tape the way it is permanently, the only advantage of using a mixing console instead of an audio interface connected to a DAW is the analog/warm/diferent sound you get from it right?

    So, do you adjust and mix before you record it, or after, as in get it all ready? Like, if you stuff up the mix when you record it, can you just change it after you record it? or do you have to record it all over again?

    • @WickiemediaNet
      @WickiemediaNet  8 років тому +5

      Hi +General Shamic , You typically just set the optimal gain for each of the individual tracks that you record. So you don't really make the actual mix. -Meaning that we basically record all instruments louder than you will probably mix them in. And this has actually got to do with the noise that every recording has. (I will explain all that in a later tutorial where we are going to look at the whole recording process.)
      -However, we can do a non-destructive mix from the tape-return path for what we hear coming through the monitors during the recording session.
      During the mixing phase, after the recording, we start doing the actual mix. And that is where we can alter the sounds, make it all blend together, and mix everything down to our final mix.
      If you work with live musicians in your session, they will also receive a headphone signal to hear their fellow bandmates, metronome, samples, etc etc.. Typically you send them a headphone mix with use of an AUX or CUE send. If we kinda count that as a mix, you usually do three actual mixes for a recording : 1. The control-room mix that we monitor during recording. 2. The headphone mix for the musicians. 3. The actual mix.
      I hope that mostly answers your question. I will be doing many more recording and mixing related tutorials that might explain many other things that interest you as well.
      Cheers,
      Wick.
