I've been retired for 8 yr's now & one thing I've learned is that we can slow down. That trip to the grocery when we used to run in & run out, after work, can now be slower. We can window shop a bit at some other stores, poke along a little bit, maybe stop & have a cup of coffee. Why not?
I am 53 and retired at 50. 1 thing I did do to retire early was to get out of the 401K and IRA programs. Bought rental real-estate and I am now a Limited Partner in about 1500+ units from collabrative efforts in the fund my estate planner has me invested in. I do not work
I only contribute 5% to get full company match, that's it. The 401K plan is designed for you to work until you are about dead. Also, the government does not have their hands on it yet either
My wife and I live off of our 401K. We don't work. I recommend highly to everyone to build your 401K or Roth IRA's as an alternate revenue stream in retirement to your Social Security. An observation on 401K's is when it gets over 300K it starts to accelerate. When you get over 500K it can really accelerate as the stock market grows
I retired last Feb 29 2024 at age 60. Today (7 months later) I'm still awake at sunrise and running full throttle bucket-list tasks until sunset time. Everything from inner shop project tasks, canoe/kayaking with family, ATV/UTVing, doing home renovations, doing yard maintenance, to doing monthly "drive about" vacations with my wife and also some local volunteer tasks. For me, it's like every day of my retirement is like previous Saturdays or Sundays (when I need a slower paced day). I'm not bored or wished I worked longer. 0uch! I now enjoy my days without professional stress and hope the daytime daylight hours were longer... When people ask what I do for a living, I simply say.. "I'm retired and loving it!". Then smile back at them.....
Oh my gosh what an inspiration. Thank you for sharing. I was energized just reading your comment. Such a healthy way to look at retirement….. just like Saturday and Sundays used to be. Appreciate this
I’ve been retired for nearly 8 years. These tips are spot on! I would add a sixth: take up a hobby or other activity that didn’t fit into your work schedule. For me, that has been sewing, along with more time for leisurely reading and long walks with my dog. My younger friends ask, “Aren’t you bored?” My answer? “Never!”
My retirement has been so different from most I suppose. I hadn't worked with a large group of people for years. I never socialized with co-workers. I knew what I was going to do when I retired, all the things I couldn't do when I was working. Taking classes. Going to events, plays, community programs. Spending time with my Mom. I never traveled much and my Mom and I have taken several trips and have more planned. Instead of waking up stressed and unhappy I see each day as a new experience and am content. The last 4 years have been the best.
So inspiring!! I love a good plan that comes to fruition (because of your hard work). I have a few trips planned with my mom, really looking forward to it. And may finally make that quilt I’ve been dreaming of for 40 years
Thanks Laura for this topic. I retired 3 years ago and the socializing was my biggest adjustment. I had worked at my last job for over 27 years and that was much of my chatting, joking around with even getting some icecream after work with coworkers. I would get together with coworkers from time to time after retirement but that slowed down after the 1st year. It was a difficult adjustment to find and let new people in and get out and try new things and find new interests. I also moved around the time of my retirement so that was another change to adjust to. So 3 years into retirement now I am alot more comfortable with my situation new people have come into my life and I've found some new interests that occupy much of my time. At 1st i wasn't open to these changes but once i became a little willing for something or someone new to come into my life it seemed that happened with little effort on my part. I to like watching some of those murder mystery programs on tv and have been think lately myself about how much negativity and evil are in these programs and pondering if i should cut back on how often i watch these shows maybe find more positive programs to entertain myself with or maybe start reading more books about something that i find interesting. Definitely something to think about. Glad to know I'm not the only one pondered these things.🤔😊
Great advice. We're all more alike than we know. There are many of us out here that need this kind of compass for this stage in our lives. I really appreciate your input.
Interesting video thank you. I almost have a phobia of attending any kind of event because my job used to demand that I not only attended endless dinners, events and awards nights but I was often an organizer of them and had a role to play and often had to get up on stage and speak and coordinate the sequence of the evening etc. I cringe if someone asks me to anything like that as I associate it with work, stress and nervousness. Happy to socialize informally at friends houses etc but if I do attend something, it’s wonderful to just relax, have a drink and enjoy without any responsibility
I enjoyed reading your comment it’s such a good reminder how we all come at these issues from different perspectives/life experiences. Thanks for sharing!
This is so timely bc we have been having this EXACT conversation! We’re 61 and the changes since 58 have been shocking to go through. Our health, family issues, retiring…😣
I asked my sister to stop saying what to do when something came up I had to start saying I was telling you this and this is how I handled it , I was sharing this not asking for input I am over 50 now lol ! I can go to a ton of things if I choose but have found I don’t want to be expected to show up ! Thanks Laura ❤️
Oh my I’ve been there! Thanks for sharing this, made me chuckle. I have a couple of people I need to preface my comments with…. I’ve already handled this, but just wanted to update you🤣😄thanks Helen
I'm 68, and shortly after I retired in 2022, my husband of 38 years passed away unexpectedly. So, in addition to adjusting to retirement, I had to adjust to being on my own again. My husband was 9 years older than me, so I knew that it was likely he'd pass before me. So, while it happened sooner than expected, I felt like I was a bit prepared for it. Also, I spent quite some time thinking about what I wanted retirement to look like. I also had realistic expectations about friendships. I was with my company for 26 1/2 years, and it was obvious that few of my co-workers retained friendships with those who left. I have only one co-worker I see now. I reached out to a few customers that I felt particularly close to in the hopes that friendships would become more meaningful. There have been some lunches and dinners, but I can't say more than that at this point. I am enjoying retirement, and I have a new grandson, so life is good.
Thanks so much for sharing this. I am so sorry about the loss of your husband. Life certainly looks different. My husband is a few years older than me and it’s always in the back of my mind. All of my friends are going through similar experiences after leaving their careers. It is really hard to transition work relationships to real life friendships. I only have two. But this has forced me to get motivated to do the things I’ve always wanted to do and meet new people who share those interests. It’s a process for sure.
So many great tips about addressing retirement! I myself was so anxious to retire and pursue several hobbies I never had time for while working. But everyone is different, and some folks find change daunting. Very good ideas to remember as we get older, I am so fortunate to have two amazing libraries near me. Great summer documentaries, guest speakers, learning classes, always something fun to explore.and has seriously enriched my life. Thanks for the great tips! 💗
Libraries are a treasure chest! I’m actually considering volunteering at the new National Medal of Honor Museum in a nearby city. It opens next year. I’ve never done anything like that before and I’m finding myself excited about a new endeavor for the first time in a long time❤️
So true on the social aspect, I firmly believe that in retirement you should always say yes to suggestions, get out and enjoy yourself! Nice video, thanks, Oz
For me, I knew some structure would be needed. After a (Covid) year delay in the plan I now work two days weekly at a local independent bookstore, and another half day at out Humane Society Thrift store. I do those Tues, Wed & Thursday and then have a 4 day weekend to socialize or travel to see family or just veg at home cooking, reading mysteries or loving on my cat. I'm not a big traveler but love home more.
What a good plan, I am just figuring out how much go time I need vs down time to feel fulfilled. Love the idea of doing a few days in a few different places
I never listen to you before and I was a little bit curious but I am also always skeptical. You gave some nice ideas and I like that whole idea of the balance and I agree you can find on UA-cam whatever you need and for people to think openly there was another thing you said that I really did like about people that just try to solve a problem andfix things I don’t do that anymore and I’m a social worker but I see that in people 1015 years younger you had some nice thoughtful things to say thank you very much
Thanks for a great video. I'm a true crime fan but have had to limit the amount that i watch as it was having a negative effect mentally. Retirement is a time of great change, it takes time to adjust.
Great tips. I think you really have to "Plan" for what you will do in retirement and also what you won't do. It is definitely a change in many ways. I'm trying to learn and experience new things at this time in my life. I was able to retire at 60, currently 64 but my husband is 74 and is starting to have some health issues which are a challenge but I'm still trying to live our best lives. You look way younger than 67.
I love a good plan, I think those of us who are planners understand eachother. I wish I had planned better but I don’t thinks I wanted to think about it. Now I’m going to take time and really consider my ‘what next’. And thanks I inherited incredible genes from both my mom and dad❤️
You are so right encouraging people to get out. Cause their might come a time that getting out with a walker is a challenge. Even walking a park with up and down hills is a challenge. It is also tiring. After awhile i just give up and walk my residence complex. Its flat. I can stop and rest. Sometimes i just take my cane to ho to the food store and try and find a working charged motorized cart. Another challenge. Sciatica has changed my life. So if your able do it now!!! You never know what is coming down the pike. Life is so limiting now.
Thanks for the wise words. My mom has been using a walker for three years now. It happened overnight and changed her abilities in a snap of the fingers. Good for you for still pushing yourself to get out!!
Love the channel, I hope I'm not the only one with XY chromosomes. I still have a concert to go to (in the future) with all classical music with Rachmaninov and Ode to Joy. Ha!
I personally stay away from crime and horror stories. There's enough horror in real life, the 'forever wars' of mass human slaughtering (all done for profit and resource grabbing) for a start. I read factual books and watch factual programmes as I love learning new things. I've worked very long hours, and having the opportunity to concentrate on learning new things is a luxury to me and I'm indulging myself.
Please drop a comment and add to the ‘surve and thrive’ list. Thanks!

If I may ask, as in withdrew all of the money from the 401K and IRA programs? If so, what was your strategy behind that decision? Thank you
I learned about govt actions from my licensed fiduciary in by name, "Eric Paul Elmer "
Eric Paul Elmer explained the benefits of long-term treasuries and alternative investments, which the govt doesn't disclose
You look amazing for 67 💛
Thanks so much!!! Great genes from my mother ❤️❤️
@@laurahillauthor I want to know what skin care regime you use, you are positively glowing!

We are almost there. We plan on retiring in Italy and documenting the whole process. We’re in our mid-50s. We’re so looking forward to it!
Wonderful and what a great plan!

I’m 53 and I don’t want to retire.. work gives me purpose and a reason to get up and be social.. I’d be so bored at home doing nothing all day
It really is a challenging time. I put it off as long as I could!

Hello Laura ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love the channel, I hope I'm not the only one with XY chromosomes. I still have a concert to go to (in the future) with all classical music with Rachmaninov and Ode to Joy. Ha!
Wonderful!! I actually have an opera (small local one) on my calendar next month. And welcome XY, you are not alone 🤣
Your skin is lovely
Thanks so much, have to say I have my mom to thank. Great genes😁

The money issue is very important. Do you recommendations about investments and any surprise expenses that most people don’t know about?
I’m working on a video about finances. It’s just so different for everyone I’m trying to figure out some good basics
You’re 67?? You look much, much younger., like 47
Thanks so much! Good genes🤣
Oh for fucks sake she does not🥴
