I’m 80 yrs old and as a young girl I remember waking in the morning to my grandma singing you are my sunshine and making biscuits. They were so good. With karo syrup and of couse butter swirled in it.
Shirley I'm 72 thus month and I remember my grandma doing the same. When I stayed with her I would jump out from under her homemade quilts and fly d9wn the hall to the kitchen to get behind the old wood stove and wait for those biscuits. I miss those times

Two weeks before my Mama died, she was still making scratch biscuits at 94. She made them every day since , she was 12. Grandma taught her how to fix them.
My grandmother did also till the day she died and I can see her sitting at the table drinking her coffee out of her saucer n not the out of her cup , golden memories

My mother learned how to make biscuits from her grandma in the 30’s, standing on a wood box. My mother always made buttermilk biscuits and she choked them off and rolled them. They were baked in a cast iron skillet. I have been learning to make those biscuits for 50 years.

I discovered a trick with the butter instead of cutting it in. Put your buttermilk in the freezer to get really cold. Melt your butter. Then with a fork stir the almost frozen buttermilk while you pour the butter in and voila. Small butter nuggets that mix in great.
do you mix the buttermilk and melted butter? or which do you add first to the mixture? that sounds genius!
@@jamilaaaaa seems like you pour the melted butter into the cold buttermilk as you stir the buttermilk. Then put the butter/buttermilk mixture into the flour.

When my kids were little, I used to make biscuits and sausage gravy for them all the time. Haven't made that in years. Gonna be making it again real soon. ❤️

Well my southern roots the knuckles in the biscuits so we could put lots of homemade gravy and it would stay on the biscuits. OMG!! Now I need me some biscuits and gravy 👍👍👍👍

Paula, I will definitely be making this soon. I love making biscuits and taught my daughter how when she was young. That last (sometimes over worked) biscuit was always not as perfect looking as the rest, so my artistic daughter would shape that one into a heart and called it the “love biscuit”! To this day her Dad always asks for the love biscuit whenever I make them. I am going to share this recipe with her so she can make them for her own family.

I grate my frozen butter. It’s easier than using a pastry cutter. I also put parchment paper on my pan not spray.

I love fig preserves, too. Maybe some time you could show how to make them? I have 3 small fig trees, but my aunts and grandmother are all gone and evidently none of my cousins that lived near them learned how to make the preserves! One of the highlights of our trip to Mobile each summer was all the jars gifted to us to take home! My aunts knew how much I loved them so they made extras for us. Living in Arizona so far away from family, each dollop on toast was like a hug from family. Each time.
Fig preserves are absolutely delightful.

My grandpa has been sending me home with a couple jars of fig preserves for the past couple months and oh my goodness it’s so good! We eat it on sharp white cheddar and sometimes toast! It’s VERY good!

They called them pastry clothes.
I keep mine in a ziplock bag in the freezer...never wash it. Shake off excess flour before freezing.

I use pastry cloth also. I have a pastry board I keep in cabinet. Pastry cloth folded and in fridge...I think mine is cotton...something like flour sack material!

I ended up ordering a "pastry cloth" off Amazon. Large pillowcase is a great idea

Going to be teaching my 14 yr old grandson how to make biscuits soon, already taught him to make sausage gravy. He couldn’t believe how easy it was!!
This recipe reminded me of how I learned to make biscuits. Not having any southern roots, my idea of homemade biscuits meant I opened a tube of refrigerator biscuits and baked them myself. Well about a year ago, I watched a video on how to make REAL homemade biscuits. The UA-cam channel was called Collard Valley Cooks and the woman making the biscuits was Tammy Nichols, also from Georgia. (You may have heard of Tammy. She was on Family Food Fight just last year and Tammy, her husband Chris and Tammy's brother Eddie came in 2nd place!). Anyway, like you, Tammy is a true southern cook and her recipes are delicious! In one of her recent videos she mentioned wanting to meet you, now that she and her husband live in St. Mary's. Georgia. She reminds me so much of you, Paula, and I've learned so much from both of you. I sure hope you have the opportunity to meet one another!

I don't use sugar with cornbread either 🙂. My grandmother made it in a big old iron skillet in the oven. She ALWAYS had it! I learned to love it with butter and no sugar. My Mama used to fry up cornbread patties in the skillet on top of the stove. Then she would break them up in a glass, and pour buttermilk over them. I never learn to like buttermilk, but regular milk works well!

Oh, Paula! This took me right back to my Mawmaw's kitchen! I used to stand in a chair and watch her mix the flour, shortening, and milk in her pink biscuit bowl, and she patted them down a bit with the back of her hand just before she put them in the oven. My big mama didn't roll her dough out the dough stayed in bowl and she pinched off the dough shaped biscuit by hand and baked in woodstove

I've gone back and watched this twice. No baking powder? Added salt and sugar but not baking powder. Can't imagine getting any results that didn't turn out like hockey pucks.
Maybe Paula used self-rising flour.

I love making biscuits. My grandma taught me. She’s been gone now for 17 years and I still miss her all the time. But, I feel close to her when I’m making biscuits. I can still see her in the kitchen standing beside me directing me. She didn’t even have a recipe usually, she would just say, “about that much or that looks about right.” 😄 I am making biscuits tomorrow morning with sausage gravy. I rarely make gravy and biscuits anymore but I was raised eating down home southern cooking by a lovely southern grandmother. Thanks for making these videos Paula. My daughter and I have so enjoyed watching you!

Sounds like my Grandma! She never measured a thing and was a fabulous cook. She taught me how to make biscuits, but I never perfected it until she passed. I like to think she gifted me that ability after she left this Earth. : )

My mom made biscuits everyday of her life except the days she gave childbirth until she went to the hospital to die at age 90. Everyone loved her biscuits too. I loved her fried salted pork and buscuit!

I had a DNA test done, found out I wasnt German, a drop if that, you might want to have a DNA test done to see what all you have, then hire someone to have a Pedigree Chart done, A Pedigree Chart goes back alot farther then a simple so called "Family Tree" & isnt Proffessionally done.
I thought I had Jewish, German, & Black foot AND Cherokee Indian in me, I dont have any of that in me.
Found out I have British in me, & I found out I have just a tiny bit of Arabian & some Italian, & 1/4 Afro American in me. It makes it fun to try new recipes, inviting recipes from back when., & its fun too.

@@jhb61249 ; Then all you gotta do is get a DNA test to show what kind of English you have, & the Queen come out on a tv show one day & said if any english Royalty one must get a DNA Test to proove it, so thats when I did. Thats why William came to see me.
And this yr I found out if you have Royalty you get some things FREE! I was amazed, & since I "prooved it, my Husband & I can move to Britain with no problems. That part is vey exciting, my husband & I are excited about that. You might beable to do the same after getting a DNA.
I dont have any Irish, & the detective that conducted the DNA test on me told me I dont have any Irish or German or Jewish or Indian in me like my Mom told me I have, I said; "not even German"? He said; "a drop of German if that", which means my Dad isnt really my Dad, because he had alot of German & alot of Irish, his Grandpas Father my Dads Grandpa came right straight from Germany he didnt speak a lick of English & watched my dad play with my Dads Brothers in the Snow, & he hugged my dad one day & said something in German looking down on my Dad. The Uncle separated his Grandpa from him & his family because my Dads Father & Mother was 1st Cousins & they black sheeped my Dad & all 3 of my dads Brothers & his parents. It wasnt that uncommon for 1st Cousins to Marry each other back in the 1930's & 1940's.
But I even though they werent my real grandparents because I have no German or Irish, well a drop of German if that. But either way I loved them.
Princess Diana is 7th Cousins to Charles!!!! So really love is love.
Oh & my dads other Grandpa came right straight from Ireland he spoke Irish, & he had a Irish first name,
"SANDY"!!!
I like the traditions & names everyone uses, related or not.
Maybe when I move to Britain you & I can be friends, & with a little luck neighbors! 💐Save your money the move there is cheap if you go threw certain Airlines & if you jet over with others going the same way I herd its only $99 0r a little more, if your not careful a jet can cost into the thousands. It would be wise to get a duel citizenship my husband says, but i really dont care to ever come back to the no good America.

I remember mom telling me she was relieved when she started using canned biscuits. I also remember my dad telling my mom to giver him another one of those cat-heads, but I never knew what he was talking about until today! Mom would always baked her for a while, then take them out, pat them down and return them to finish baking. I tell you I loved those things. They were delicious!
Don't you need some baking powder or something to make it rise?
You taught me how to make biscuits years ago with a ice cream scoop. I’m still going strong. Love u!!!!
Baked eggplant casserole. 1 lb. eggplant, 1/2 lb dry bread crumbs, 1 sm. can evaporated milk, 1/4 cup whole milk, 1/4 c. each finely chopped green peppers, onion and celery, 1/2 stick butter, 2 beaten eggs, salt/pepper to taste, sage to taste, chopped pimento to taste, 2 oz. grated cheese. ---Peel eggplant, soak in salt water in frige. for several hours. Soak dry bread crumps in evap. milk plus whole milk. Saute vegs. in butter. Boil eggplant until tender, drain well. Mix all ingredients. Blend well. Top with cheese and bake at 350 until golden brown.
MY MOMMA & GRANDMA HAD THE BISCUIT BOWL'S & THEY USED THEIR HAND'S TO MIX & ROLL OUT THE BISCUIT'S TOO. THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE LIL TOOLS THAT MADE IT EASIER...& YEP REMEMBER THE CAT HEAD'S TO GO WITH TOMATER GRAVY...NOW THAT WAS SOME GOOD EAT'S..IF WE WAS LUCKY HAD SOME FRIED SALT PORK WITH IT.

Am I missing something? Did you add any baking powder to the all purpose flour? in the ingredient section it calls for it but I didn't see it here? AM I CRAZY?

So no baking powder or soda? I lived in Georgia at one time and learned to make good biscuits. When I moved I could not find a place with White Lily Self rising. Someone told me to replace 1/4 of the flour with cake flour along with AP flour. Worked perfectly.
Thank you for sharing your recipe and memories. My grandma made great biscuits, using a wooden dough bowl and her dough cloth. Those were wonderful childhood days.

My mama always "choked off" meaning pinched off the dough instead of cutting them with a cutter. She also pressed her knuckles into the top of the biscuits. I believe the shape that created and the size was what deemed the name "Cat Head Biscuits".
My Mama did the same. She did make the cat head biscuits that Mrs. Paula talked about!
My granny pinched hers also everything was done with her hands she would get aggravated with me trying to learn i could mix with my hands i used a fork and used Crisco not butter.lol

Okay your written recipe on the website says “milk” not “buttermilk”. Might need to change that.
I have been begging my mama to show me how to make biscuits for years and she never would show me . All she would say is , you just got to practice. Well , I understood that , but I still needed her to help me get started . My Granny could make the prettiest little biscuits . She had one of those wooden bowls too and she had little hands . I think that's why her biscuits turned out so pretty. She would roll her biscuits out by hand every time . She's passed away now and when she died I asked if I could have her pan that she baked her biscuits up in , so they gave it to me . My family and I call it the Granny pan . lol !! My daughter jokes with me and tells me she's gonna steal my Granny pan one of these days . HAHAHA...!! She is just kidding, but I told her if it's still in good condition when I pass away, she can have it . Thank you Miss Paula for showing me how to make biscuits !! I'm gonna try making me some today . I love you Miss Paula and Miss Teresa !! 😘❤

Often times people say _“I wish I would have asked for that ... “, “I should have taken that tool from papa, and that pot and spatula grandma asked me if I wanted when I was a little kid”. “I should have”_ and _“I wish I”_ are two things people find themselves saying the most after a family member passes. *Always enjoy the little things in life, because one day you will realize they were the big things.*

Oh my gosh! This is the one recipe I REALLY wanted to see. I am determined to make a good Southern biscuit and I think I may be like your Grandma...I can bake pies, bread, cakes, you name it, to die for - but the biscuits never bake up as soft and fluffy as the Pillsbury ones my husband loves. Hi Paula! My husband grew up in North Carolina and talks about his grandma's biscuits. That they were as flat and hard. LOL But my mother was a breadmaker, as was her mother, and probably her grandmother...and I'm proud to say that I picked up the gift, too. I had always made bread, but when I married my husband, he said he liked biscuits, so I started making them. And I used my hands to cut in the butter. Fun to do that. I also use my own blend of flour - unbleached flour (King Arthur mainly), spelt, and teff. Sometimes I mill my own flour and put some of that in it, too. I don't knead, but flatten and fold until they feel like a baby's butt. And I cut 'em and bake them like you do. But, before I put them in the oven, I brush the tops with a milk and egg white mix and put the them in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Boy, do they rise up really tall and are so soft and fluffy. And the taste...they don't taste like a typical biscuit. I guess because of the flours I use; not sure. But my hubby says they are the best he has ever tasted. I love to make biscuits and bread. Yours looks great, too! Would have loved to been there with you in your kitchen making biscuits. Thanks for a great video!! Hugs! God Bless! Sue

Nanny had a big wooden bowl in her cupboard, with a dishcloth over it. Inside was the flour and leavening ingredients. She would make a little hole in the center of the bowl to pour buttermilk into. Mix up how much flour she wanted and hand form the biscuits. I helped her make baby biscuits with a shot glass! She made a pan of biscuits every day, a pot of grits, some bacon and, and people going to work would make their own eggs when they got up. She made coffee in a percolator. The bacon and the percolator made the whole house smell good! This was in Chattanooga in 1948. Thank you for reading this. I am having to type with a right hand and a left thumb and pointer since a stroke!! Love Paula Deen. She is a hoot! I am 80 now, thought I would not last this long!If I thought I would last this long, I would have taken better care of myself! (Yogi Berra) My favorite was fried corn which is not fried. You all know what I mean, cutting the Silver Queen corn a couple of times and then scraping down all the cobs etc. I would rather have fried corn than anything, even cold! Bye bye.
