    So because the new floor is so important and seem closer to the ground, will this stop the drivers from using tall curbs and go wide in areas with tall apex or curbs?

    • @WhiskyCanuck
      @WhiskyCanuck 2 роки тому +162

      I wondered about that too - riding the curbs too much will open up the gap underneath and I'd expect to cause a significant drop in downforce as a result. From the days when skirts were still used, when air got in like that while pulling Gs, the cars often go straight off track. But the skirts were flexible, this is a rigid structure, so maybe it won't be as much of a problem?

      @@Blazingboi-b2x The floor design causes extreme low pressure under the car. increasing the seal of the ground effect by actually physically touching the ground with the side skirts will only serve to DROP the air pressure even further. there is no way air could get "trapped" under to create such a high pressure as to lift the car off the ground as the inlets and the outlets at the back are huge. You would have to fully block up the outlets at the back and there's no plausible way that could happen during a race.

    Hello,
    All the new rules are thought with, I think, an intention to go in a good direction for the race. I have one question about the new minimum weight though.
    True it comes from new safety enhancements (which is great) and cost reduction concerns (which are understandable), but more weight also means more momentum, in crashes particularly.
    Isn't there a risk that the weight increased so much over the past few seasons that safety measures will be rendered obsolete by the massively increased energy of heavier cars going as fast, or even faster just before an impact ?

    Will F1 cars now be heavier than Formula E cars?
    And keep in mind: FE is not even trying to be fast. For show aero bits, limited exotic materials, super long races for a tiny battery, no battery swap pitstops (but every e-scooter does it in seconds), road all-weather tyres, limited power and regen, etc, etc, etc.
    If FE didn't have a monopoly for 25 years to be the sole zero emission open wheel series, would they be so lame? If engineers wanted, battery powered cars could win LeMans 24h, lap faster than Indycar and F2.

    This is going to be really interesting to see what happens. Hope they haven't placed most of the downforce on the grounding effect though, its potentially very dangerous because if you loose the grounding seal even a little bit, you loose pretty much all the downforce. Have a look at some you tube videos of people testing grounding with RC cars. If a driver damages the seal on a curb or another driver clips the seal, that could be the end of the drivers race. This is going to be a very different season.

      I see this all the time and I have no idea where it's coming from. The 1982 cars - the last to run as "wing cars" - had to stay away from kerbs because of the risk to their sliding skirts. That will not be a factor in the new rules because there won't be any skirts. So, in fact, driving over kerbs will not be any different in that regard from what it was. The difference will be in what happens to the tyres and how the suspension copes with it.

    I don’t get the reason people think it will make the season more competitive, with such a massive rule change and totally new ways of generating downforce, the new tires, and the new E10 fuel wouldn’t it make much more sense for some teams to have huge advantages over others as there is huge scope to get a advantage especially with the new rule change, yes the regulations make the racing closer and easier for the attacking driver, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the cars will be closer, whenever rule changes have come about there has generally been a large gap between the team and huge upsets in the order, like in 2005, 2009 and 2014, we see better racing when we come to the end of a regulation era like in 2021, where there is little scope for further development.

    I don't think their rule changes help with innovation. Look at the building code. They set a precedent that must be met. How it is met is neither here nor there. Otherwise grand architecture would not be possible. So if something is unsafe but it has to met a safety precedent, e.g. "if reliant on ground effect, if traction is lost an emergency mech must engage to provide traction equal to or greater blah blah blah", compliance could be met with redundant engineering, like the electric brakes on my 3 ton trailer. For ground effect loss I'd say it would have to be some kind of small rocket on each wheel that fires downward to push the car into the tarmac for about half a second. The extra weight would be worth it. The curtain could be spring loaded too instead of breaking off. Ultimately, faster cornering will be inevitable despite redundancy to maintain down force and tracks will need to be changed. I think if seating was about 25m from the track and 4 m above the sand you could have your cake and eat it. Mind you, to avoid pillars under the seating the stand would be built like a suspension bridge. That's how I'd do it.
