  • WCW Spring Stampede 1999 took place in Tacoma, WA on April 11th. This is the first WCW pay per view to use the new company branding and many consider Spring Stampede 99 to be the last decent pay per view event the company ever produced.
    The show features a star-studded main event where 4 competitors square off for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship; Sting, Diamond Dallas Page and Hollywood Hulk Hogan step inside the ropes with Champion Ric Flair while Macho Man Randy Savage officiates the match. The main event marks a turning point for World Championship Wrestling as not only do we get a new champion, but a superstar also gets injured which leads to some long recovery time.
    Elsewhere on the card Kevin Nash and Goldberg have their Starrcade rematch, Kidman gets a shot at Rey Mysterio's cruiserweight title, Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit look to settle their rivalry with Raven and Saturn, and Konnan tries to shut Disco Inferno up once and for all in a singles grudge match.
    This WCW PPV Review is part of the Wrestling Bios Reliving The War series.

    DDP getting the belt was well deserved, but the fact they waited so long and for DDP to turn heel to do the honors is just so WCW.

    • @namikstudios
      @namikstudios 6 місяців тому +1

      There was a good reason they waited so long. Eric Bischoff and DDP were and still are close friends in real life, so Eric was worried that if DDP was given the world title earlier that people would have thought he only got it because he was friends with the boss. However, by this time in 1999, everyone could see that DDP had earned it himself and truly deserved the belt. Perhaps they were overly cautious but it turned out well.

      That's probably somewhat true,

I would then tune into WCW Thunder occasionally due to raw being on Mondays. Long story short, this was the very first WCW ppv that I got to watch and seeing DDP become heavyweight champ that night made me become a fan of WCW afterwards as well as WWE. Watching this brings back so many memories and I believe that even though WCW was a sinking ship at this point Spring Stampede 1999 was an underrated Gem in the Monday Night Wars. Really sort of a shame they turned DDP heel before the win. Him getting the win as people's champ would have blown the roof off the place. Also shame Hogan got injured guess that is what caused the Flair heel turn and Goldberg never getting his final revenge. Although they could have gone quicker about it.

    You said something very important to me at the beginning of the video and that’s form your own opinion on this show. And that’s something I feel I want to do on these last few years of WCW. I’m unfamiliar with the going ons of WCW in these final years because we mostly started watching WWF only at my house by this time. I know the general consensus on this time period of WCW is it slowly goes downhill but I feel like I want to experience that for myself for better or worse and form my own opinion on this era of WCW. That way I have my own personal opinion.

    2:15 that there's the Spaceman Quebrada, to my knowledge only Taka Michinoku had been using it with any regularity in the late 90''s (and mostly in Japan) so it was darn impressive to see Blitz pull it off.

    I get that the WWF's crash TV and swearing, boobies and violence drew in the viewers, and I also get that storylines etc. hook viewers, but I didn't mind competitive programs like Mysterio vs Kidman just for the conceit of it. At times, WCW still felt like a sporting event, and I think that's why I still preferred it and stuck it out through the end.
    WCW forgot what brought it to the dance when it began copying the WWF's crash tv and ESPECIALLY when they brought Russo in. The presentation needed to remain sports-based in comparison to the WWF. Southern wrasslin.

    This is the last of 3 WCW PPVs I paid for during the golden era of the Monday Night Wars. I was diehard WCW (Still am) but I had to work this night so I paid this chick I was friendly with in HS to record this for me. I watched later that night. Happy to see DDP get the win finally. The other 2 PPVs I bought were Halloween Havoc 98 and Starrcade 98. I picked arguably the 3 most infamous shows outside of Bash 96 and Starrcade 97 .

    • @CurlyFromTheSwirly
      @CurlyFromTheSwirly 2 місяці тому

      Funny thing is, I didn't expect DDP to win and didn't pay to watch this that Sunday. So I had to get the reairring on Wednesday.
      However, I did watch Spring Stampede 2000 thinking DDP would beat Jarrett. Go figure. 😂

      It should have been sooner,
      and without that Macho Man BS;
      but at the end of the day
      it's still better than most wrestlers get.

      @@CurlyFromTheSwirly because they pulled the trigger way too late and everyone knew it, I loved watching DDP grow as a performer from his Diamond Doll and Max Muscle days and this was such a loss because we didnt get the proper top babyface championship run he should have gotten. I love that he's a world champ but hate it came too damn late.

    • @CurlyFromTheSwirly
      @CurlyFromTheSwirly 2 місяці тому

      @TC-iw5lg ,
      Agreed, but it was more of too late for WCW than for DDP. WCW probably would have been smarter to have DDP win in the summer of 98 and Goldberg start his championship later.
      As people have stated, Goldberg vs Hogan at Starcade would have been a big money making event; but let's get back to DDP. In 1998, DDP was the star of WCW, but the company didn't realize it.
      Even having DDP win at Halloween Havoc would have been better than what they did. WCW actually considered having DDP win, but because Goldberg had some TV appearances coming up they felt he needed to keep the belt or it wouldn't look as good.
      I have no problem with DDP waiting till 99 for the belt as far as for his time. As I said, that was about WCW becoming a mess.
      1999 should have never had that finger poke BS and nWo reunification garbage.
      The main problem with that was WCW was then focusing on old stars, mainly Hogan and secondly Flair. When what they needed to do was build new stars. (Which WWF was doing.)
      But even with that mess up, they should have had Hogan loss to Flair sooner, then Flair to DDP without Macho interfering. He should have kept it longer than a month, and therr was no need for Sting to win the belt for 90 minutes.
      After that, someone again new like Raven could take the belt from DDP by cheating. Having the flock or some of them come help would be great. Then Saturn beats Raven, and DDP helps to settle the score. Sting would beat Saturn and eventually we cycle back to Goldberg getting the bell back from Sting.
      But WCW had no plan or vision other than Hogan.
