Rick Martel - one of the most underrated wrestlers of all time. Right up there with people like Ravishing Rick Rude, Mike Awesome, Chris Kanyon (mainly his early stuff), Raven, and Big Boss Man.

Concerning Scott Steiner, this is him mid transformation into Big Poppa Pump, whom you may have heard has the hook up, and wishes for you to shout if your auditory receptors have acceptably understood his statement.
Everything after Starrcade 97 was the beginning of the end. Hogan couldn't lay down clean for anyone and only lost in over booked finishes, wouldn't even let the faces get heat on him without squashing their entire comeback seconds later and mounting 90% of the offense. People actually want this clown to wrestle again is the baffling part of it all.

The Stunner & Ace Crusher aren't the same move though, Stunner's just a modified version. As most know these days that Johnny Ace created the Ace Crusher, as for the 'Stunner' it was originally the Whippersnapper as Mikey Whipwreck created it to which Austin himself has said he got the idea for using it by Mikey.

Hillbilly Jim sounds like one of the nicest guys in the business but he didn't do "diddly" as a WWE competitor. Rick Martel didn't accomplished much neither but he was in a underrated feud with Jake Roberts.
That La Parka head scissors to Disco over the ropes was the sloppiest head scissors ever, lol. It was cringe inducing because Disco had to take like 2 steps toward La Parka while he was wobbling on the ropes, then Disco had to jump out of the ring. It was almost as sloppy as Macho Man and Yokozuna at the royal rumble when Savage went to pin Yokozuna and yoko kicked out and "threw" Savage over the ropes, lol. That was probably my all time favorite botch, lol because Savage jumped to his feet and sprung himself up over the top rope, and that's what Disco reminded me of here.
I think that there are less famous, but worse Rumble botches. I think it is RVD kicking Goldust 'out of the ring'...in that he kicks Goldust, who stops, turns and jumps out of the ring seconds later.

Axe kick, Brian. Booker doesn't do a scissors kick, he does an axe kick. A scissors kick is when your legs scissor the opponent. Hence the name. XP That's like when people kept calling Chris Daniel's springboard moonsault a "split-legged" moonsault. You kinda need to actually SPLIT your legs to make it one. And yes, I'm overly obsessed with details.
I didn’t know Martel was in WCW either Brian. I loved Rick Martel when he was a member of Strike Force with Santana. Side note La Parka was always one of my favorites. And that pump handle slam by Goldberg was impressive as hell.
I truly couldn't stand "Mongo" during this time period. Besides Luger, I thought he was just the WORST! Rick Martel was a true professional for this. He changed the ending on the fly after blowing out his knee for Booker to win. He was the push that wasn’t supposed to happen.
With the Scott Steiner defection, I remember the next night on Nitro he comes out blonde and interferes in a match (can't remember which one) and Schiavone and Heenan were shouting who is that? It's... it's Scott Steiner
2:20 I remember Louie Spicoli dying & also Zbysko not breaking character when it was announced on Nitro saying something to the effect of "If you're not gonna say anything nice about someone don't say anything at all so I'm not going to say anything." Not saying he should've totally broke Kayfabe, this was the late 90s afterall, he should've just said nothing period

3 years later since my last comment. Really enjoying this review again, and it's still awesome after watching Jericho vs Juventud in AEW
Axe kick, Brian. Booker doesn't do a scissors kick, he does an axe kick. A scissors kick is when your legs scissor the opponent. Hence the name. XP
That's like when people kept calling Chris Daniel's springboard moonsault a "split-legged" moonsault. You kinda need to actually SPLIT your legs to make it one.
And yes, I'm overly obsessed with details.
Ryusuta but didn't booker t always call it a scissors kick?
It wasn't a real scissors kick but it was always called the scissors kick.
Damn, that Saturn vs Booker T match was fucking sick! I never would've thought...
Nick Patrick's wacky wrist movements when he counts always made me chuckle
Martel, booker t and Saturn had a brief 3 way fuede for the TV title. They had some really good matches in wcw around this time.
Hi Brian. I love these videos.
But I gotta tell ya', I've been watching old Nitro's on the Network recently and I don't hate him!
Not a good wrestler, but I've actually enjoyed watching him.
I still can't say the same about Lex Luger.
I couldn't stand mongo when he was on commentary.
Lightspeeds
I STILL hate him on commentary...
I think that's the reason that I hated him so much when he transitioned to the ring.
DICK LONG
I did watch when it was on.
I'm sorry, but do you have some kind of problem? What makes you think that I am sum "noob"?
I ain't new to this son! 27 year long fan, and someone who has missed exactly 1 ep of Raw and 1 ep of SD in 20 years.
Mind your manners.
I could remember if Mongo was any good or not in the ring until I watched this ppv and yea he wasnt great I do remember being a fan of his when I was a kid tho
Nobody can Luger was just bad and to think him and Sting started out around the same time and only Sting thought about actually getting better.
ok sooooo I can agree with Brian here :D I did watch the show when I was younger on the VHS tapes my grandpa had. I liked the show alot and now looking back at it it's not as good as I remember but there was alot of good in the undercard. Great review and thanks for this Brian
Rick Mattel was criminally underrated and underutilized.
THEY TOOK OUREEE JERVBSSS!!! 😂
Yeah Scott steiner is totally a meme. Best description it encapsulates the negative and positive aspects lol
Damn man, thats wild you only started watching in like 1998. I remember first watching in 1994ish. Watching the attitude era start to finish was so cool. You missed out on a lot of good stuff man
Anything from 93-96 was the worst time to be a wrestling fan. I think ‘94 was the better out of those years. I got better during mid to late 96. Especially when Bret came back and fielded with Austin.
Back then I don't know much about Martel since I start to watch WCW in 1997,but I was impressed with his look and skill.
I remember buying this, First PPV on my first 50 inch TV.
New sub brother! Well you know somethin mean gene okerlund, i just wanted to thank this guy for commenting on the wrestling matches from my childhood and teens.
Looking at this video, I have to say it. Booker T is fucking amazing. For his ring work, he has my utmost and total respect.
I was there and I lost my sh*t when Scott Steiner turned heel! It was a fun and unforgettable night. Love the Cow Palace!
My friends and I still talk about this
Nice seeing Nick “Son of the Masked Assassin/Assassin 1” Patrick.
