How I Store & Organize My Ammo

  • A "quick" video on how I store my ammunition, put together while I was setting up a new container for my 9x19 ammo. For me, it's important to keep my ammo organized and portable, so I keep the shells in standard cases, and limit the amount I load in one ammo can to 40 lbf or less.
    By the way, while I much prefer the metric system, the pound is going to be more applicable to the majority of my viewers. Those who weren't brought up to understand the universe in terms of 14th-century European agriculture can multiply any weight I mention in pounds by .454 to get kilograms.
    I am working on more Tips & Tricks videos, as well as a new series. So while this is kind of another filler video, it's also a test run for some new techniques and equipment I'll be using on those future projects.
    As always, I hope you found something useful here, and I'd be happy to answer questions and hear feedback.

    Good idea but if it were me, I would just fill up the ammo can with whichever caliber ammunition to the top as weight wouldn't be too much of a priority. I can only imagine how much one of those 50 cal ammo cans could hold of loose 9mm bullets.

      Go ahead and put 60 or 70 pounds of weight in one of those cans (lead shot works well), and try to carry it any significant distance. Then try to tell me weight isn't something worth thinking about.

      Back in college, I had to carry a replacement car battery across town on foot when my rig was dead. Similar size, shape, and weight (actually, a little lighter, probably) to a .50-cal can stuffed to the gills, and I had it in a backpack. That was not a fun experience. My back was messed up by the time I got home. And that was just the battery, not the other stuff you'd want to carry in a survival or SHTF situation. Even in a good backpacking rig that can support and distribute the weight better, 60 - 70 pounds on top of your other gear is not very realistic.
      That's the point of the 100-round plastic boxes in the can. Driving somewhere? Throw in the whole can. Need to hoof it? Take one or two of the smaller boxes.

    • @SynchronizorVideos
      @SynchronizorVideos  5 років тому +2

      I wouldn't consider myself a prepper. I'm too much of an optimist to expect the world to end at any given moment. I do believe very much in being prepared for emergencies though. Guns - although a lot of fun and certainly useful in certain scenarios - aren't even that high on the list, if you ask me.
      Medical training is a real big one that's bound to be useful. I always recommend starting with this one - I did back in middle school in the 1990s. I've never needed to fire a shot in anger in my life, but just a month or two ago I was under a semi trailer taking care of a cyclist that had lost control and gotten himself run over. Take a first aid/CPR/AED class at a minimum, and more advanced first responder training for bonus points. And set yourself up with a good first aid kit.
      Also learn some basic orienteering/navigation skills, and work on developing your sense of direction. Learn how to read a map, and to identify and work from landmarks. Memorize or write down important phone numbers as a backup. Modern smartphones with GPS and maps are very useful, but they can be a real crutch that makes other skills slide. Earlier this month, I was traveling in Tokyo with a coworker who used his phone for everything, and when it died on him, he had no clue where he was or which way he was walking. You can build on this toward legit wilderness survival skills if that's something you might be facing in your environment.
      Training aside, get yourself a good belt and carry some tools. A multitool, a flashlight, and a handkerchief are all easy to keep on your person, and are very useful in both emergencies and day-to-day life. Wear clothes that are practical and shoes that you can move in properly. If you drive, have at least a basic toolkit in your car, along with a first aid kit, a tow strap, flares, a compass & physical map, and emergency food, clothing, & water. It really is little things like this - combined with the right attitude and skills - that set you up to take charge and solve problems when there's a crisis.

    Good video. Thanks. I only buy used surplus Ammo cans. To ensure a tight seal, I take an empty Ammo can and light a candle inside, lock it down and let it burn the air out. When you go to open it, if the can is hard to open and sucks air in on opening - indicating an airtight seal - it’s a keeper. Before use for long-term storage, I spray the rubber gasket with silicon lube.

    Nov. 2, 2018----For those interested, you can buy new .50 caliber ammo cans at Walmart for $10 each, plus tax. Brother in Florida puts all his ammo into these things, but loose so all he has to do is grab a can when going to the range. Told me he could pack more ammo in the cans this way rather than keeping them in boxes like I've been doing. Decided to try it, but with my own twist to it. Each box was emptied into a zip lock bag with part of the cardboard box also inside it so I'd know what caliber, etc. it was. I'd put 100 rounds per zip lock bag. Shocked at how much ammo I was now able to store, but also how heavy the cans were when filled to the max. Spray painting ammo caliber is a good idea, just haven't done it yet. Originally, printed their sizes out on paper and taped it to the can. Spare/loaded magazines good idea. Thanks for the video.

    Tip: get a long-ish piece of cloth, tie knots at both ends. Close them in the ammo can, one knot each side. Bam, shoulder strap.

    • @SynchronizorVideos
      @SynchronizorVideos  4 роки тому +2

      I'd rather just have a second ammo can. Deploying and re-stowing a shoulder strap would take more time than simply using your other hand to carry a second can. Besides, a shoulder strap isn't going to help if you have to lean over to lift the can out of your gun safe or your car's trunk, and that's really where a weight limit comes into play. Straight dead-lifting is one thing, picking something up from a less-ideal position where you also need to engage your back is a completely different animal.

    I found that the 50 caliber ammo cans are a great choice when you want to go to the range and not have to Lug a whole bunch of stuff to the firing line.
    When I go to the range if I know I'm going to shoot say 200 or 300 or even 500 rounds what I do is I take all the ammo and I put them in Ziplocs. This makes organization very easy it allows me to carry two handguns in there as well as my hearing protection and my eye protection it takes a little getting used to the two guns I put in as a Glock 22 full size and a Glock 27.
    Now for SHTF here's what I do again I get the 50 caliber ammo cans I take the ammunition keep them in their original boxes for identification purposes then I wrap them in Ziploc and then on top of that I take a contractor garbage bag do a homemade heat Sealing impact each box accordingly for that day that I hope Never Comes.
    I was further Amazed by the fact that through experimentation an AOW AR-15 can fit. I saw this in another UA-cam video which inspired me......
    As for ammo cans 5 use the military surplus Harbor Freight even the Walmart brands made in China the only thing I always do is check the gaskets on them and put some silicone to keep the gasket in good shape. Otherwise a recommended Edition to your gear

    This is one of the few videos ive seen that had a practical angle and foresight to the ammo storage. The idea you had of walking around the block with the ammo can is genius. Ill admit ive done similar trials with shtf loaded packs (walking the equal distance that id walk to a bugout spot and actually walking there a few times a year, trying to wall at least once, naybe twicez per season/weather pattern, to shake loose any issues, like claps breaking when very cold/frozen and sealed containers getting water inside when too cold/too hot.), but i NEVER had the idea of packing an ammo can and walking it the distance id need to go with it. Thank you for this insight!!!
    One thing I figured Id add. On my work bench i have brass and metal tooth brushes and various types of sandpaper, as well as paint pens and spray paint cans. And ofcourse baristol. Every can that comes in gets inspected, its hinges get repainted if needed but first all rust is removed using both a chemical liquid process AND a physical process like with the metal bristle tooth brushes and sand paper. Then anti-rust primer gets applied and when dry, two coats of paint. For the outside of the can ill use colors that match the existing colors. For the inside ill use whatever is cheapest/i have the most of. Also light colors make it easier to see inside the ammo can at night when u shine a light inside! I use slightly off colors so ill know in the future this can was repaired ans touched up and rust removed and to look out for rust returning in the future! Then when its dry, the hinges get hit with baristol as well as the rubber gasket and the inside walls get wiped down with an old rag thats spent its entire life in an old metal coffee can with a lid thats been doused in baristol. Depending on whats being stored, the bottom of the can may get a small layer of protection. And ofcourse kitty litter/desiccant pearls. If the ammo is corrosive and/or loose ill typically pour it into a plastic bag and then into the can. Extra steps are taken depending where the ammo can is going... underground? Year round cabin? Crawlspace? Conditioned room. Etc

      Nearly all of the ammo cans I've obtained over the years have been in pretty good condition, and did not need any repainting or touch-ups.
      That said, I have wondered whether or not a white paint job would help keep internal temperatures down when a can is exposed to direct sunlight. That subject is near the top of my list if I ever get back to making firearms videos.

      For long-term storage, yeah, especially if you live in a humid reigon. I live in a fairly arid area though, and I'm opening & closing my cans constantly, so a desiccant packet doesn't really gain me much.

    On Black Friday I picked up (4) new metal .50 Cal ammo cans, so new you can still smell the paint. I paid $10 each can which is not bad for a genuine US military .50 Cal metal ammo can. I also got a package of silica gel to throw in the cans.

    +razr Shouldn't matter too much. I prefer bullet-up because it lets me see what the cartridges are loaded with, and in the case of round-nose loads, keeps them from flopping around and getting in the way of closing the lid. On the other hand, flat-point bullets or hollowpoints sit still better when kept bullet-down, and being able to grab cartridges by the rim can make them easier to pick out, especially with shorter rounds like the .380 ACP. It also keeps headstamps and primers visible, if you use those to differentiate loads rather than the bullets. Try it both ways, and see what you prefer.

    • @daw3221
      @daw3221 8 років тому

      One additional point. If you have extra space on the side of boxes, heavy duty (not sandwich bags) Ziploc bags can be used to fill the gaps with whatever spare ammo or other items that you may have left to fill the space optimally., and still provides some water and or element protection.

    • @SynchronizorVideos
      @SynchronizorVideos  8 років тому

      Yeah, if you're including other items like cleaning supplies or replacement parts, baggies are useful. Not only do they keep things dry, but they also help differentiate items, and help contain things. If you wanted to fit in a small cleaning kit for example, a sealed baggie could prevent something like a leaky solvent bottle from becoming a bigger mess.

    Nice video, thank you. Today's stupid question: why primers down? It seems easier (to me) to grasp rounds from the rimmed end rather than trying to grasp the bullet. Thanks!

    • @SynchronizorVideos
      @SynchronizorVideos  6 років тому +4

      With typical round-nose bullets, I've found that the 9mm cartridges tend to flop around in their little cubicles, and the rims sometimes get in the way when I'm trying to close the box. They're much more stable the other way. I also like to have a clear look at the bullet, to help me identify what it is. Neither are a big deal, really, but I can pick rounds out just fine when they're bullet-up, so that's the way I do it. If bullet-down works better for you, go for it; rimless semi-auto rounds fit either way.

    If you know someone who works in a pharmacy you can have them collect desiccants from the prescription bottles they use. I was able to acquire several thousand, all shapes and sizes, in no time at all. They can be heated in an oven to remove any moisture and fit nicely between your mtm cases and the wall of can.

    • @SynchronizorVideos
      @SynchronizorVideos  8 років тому

      +Matthew Brown Yeah, I currently use scrounged desiccant packs. Never really got around to refining my homemade ones, but from what I observed, they didn't work as well as purpose-made packs anyway.
      Besides, I live in a dry area and cycle through my ammo, so I probably don't even need desiccants anyway. I only really mentioned them here because a lot of folks who watch these videos are more into stockpiling and long-term storage.

      Around my neck of the woods(4 corners) I can't even carry a jerry can or jog with a ruck without someone stopping to offer a ride, which is nice in one way but not the proper; "mind your own business" old school mentality like in N.ID where people do still generally mind their own business if you don't start any crap, except the transplants from CA, WA and TX, near CDA, they are nosey...
