  • Hey, y'all. I'm Jan. Today, we're making Martha Washington Balls!
This is a candy that I've been making at Christmas for nearly 30 years.
These chocolate covered balls are absolutely delicious!
*This is a refrigerator candy and will need to stay in your fridge.
For this recipe, I cut the amount way down. So to make a much bigger batch, just double, triple, or quadruple these amounts below.
You'll need a large baking sheet with parchment paper, or wax paper. Or, a large plate. (The baking sheet or plate will need to fit into your freezer or refrigerator).
1/2 can or 7 oz of Sweetened Condensed Milk
1.5 cups of Coconut flakes or shredded coconut
    2 cups of Powdered Sugar
1/2 stick of softened butter (or melted and cooled to room temp)
    1/2 tsp Vanilla extract
1/2 cup Chopped Pecans *or any chopped nut that you like! -walnuts, cashews, peanuts, etc.. *And if you prefer more nuts, add a whole cup.
*You'll need a hard spoon or spatula
In a large bowl, mix together your sweetened condensed milk, coconut, pecans, butter, then mix in your powdered sugar. (You can use a mixer, but do this very slowly or powdered sugar will fly everywhere).
This dough will be hard to stir, and that's the way it should be.
If you accidentally end up with a runny batter, just add extra powdered sugar until it's very thick.
Once you get this all mixed together well, you can stick this in the fridge for 15-20 minutes.
OR, just quickly form your little balls. You'll want them half of the size I made. (About the size of a chocolate covered cherry.)
Make them very quickly, then put your baking pan or plate into the freezer for 1 hour. Or, the fridge for 2 hours.
Once you're ready to coat them in chocolate, you can use any type of baker's chocolate.
Or, add 1 cup of semi sweet chocolate chips and 1 cup milk chocolate chips to a bowl, plus 1 tablespoon of shortening.
Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in between until chocolate chips are ALMOST all melted. Then stir the chocolate together until fully melted.
*You could also melt your chocolate in one of those tiny crockpots if you have one. It keeps the chocolate warm and loose. I failed to mention this in the video.
Once your chocolate is all melted, (but not too hot!), take a toothpick or fork, and quickly dip each ball into the chocolate then place back onto your baking sheet.
*If your chocolate begins to harden while you're dipping the balls, just stick it back in the microwave for 5 seconds to soften it back up.
Once all balls are covered in chocolate, use a spoon to drizzle more chocolate to the tops to cover any toothpick or fork holes.
You can also drizzle chocolate over the tops to make a cute design. Or, you can add sprinkles to the tops. Or, you can even use food coloring in your chocolate to make the chocolate festive red or green or whatever color you'd prefer.
Place baking rack back into the freezer for 30 minutes, or fridge for 1 hour.
These are absolutely delicious! And very sweet. Lol
These are great gifts, and just great in general. Especially for a nice cold dessert during Christmas!
These last in your fridge or freezer for 3 months. You can easily make these now to give for gifts during the holidays beginning next month.
I hope y'all give these a try! Thank y'all for being here.

You don’t have to refrigerate your candy before dipping it,, you are so funny, you remind me of my Sister, your really real,

You're so right. Not sure why so many videos/recipes say these balls need to be refrigerated first. Some even say over night. Maybe if you have a hot house without a/c. That's the only reason I could think to fridge them for a bit. And thank you! I couldn't make a perfect meal (or video) if I tried. Might as well leave my spills and messes in so y'all can laugh, too. Lol

Did you ever use paraffin wax,, my Sister did she started making these back in the 60’s

I sure did. I think I even said it in this video. For decades, I used paraffin wax and melted my chocolate in a double boiler not knowing I could just put it in the microwave for 1 minute. Lol
I also remember getting some blow back for the wax. But I still use it in some candies.
Have a big box of it in the cabinet. Lol

Can’t stand it when people smack while they’re eating, but I guess that means they’re extra delicious 😮
