4 INGREDIENT RETRO JELLY NOUGAT! BRACH'S PICK A MIX COPYCAT!!

- Today I am going to share with you a recipe that is a throwback to the treats of my childhood! The old Brach's Pick-A-Mix stands that were found in nearly every grocery and drug store in the 70s and 80s always included a wide variety of individually wrapped chocolate, caramel, chewy, nutty, and hard candies to tempt your palate. Young and old enjoyed these treats and all you needed to do was toss some in a bag and they were weighed at the check out like grapes or sweet potatoes. My favorite were the jelly nougats which they used to be called. Now they are called Jelly Bean Nougat and they are not the same. Today I give you a delicious, homemade version of jelly nougat as I remember it and I know you will love it too! Just in time for sharing Easter treats!
This jelly nougat showed up in my Facebook feed round about Thanksgiving time. In more than one incarnation. I had my doubts that it would be possible or delicious. So I set out to see if this could work. I have made this a few times in preparation for Christmas giving and it was a splendid success. Everyone who tried it loved it. It is so easy and only takes four ingredients. You will definitely want to give this one a try if you are a lover of those chewy nougats from Brach's so many years ago!
These start off with a copious amount of mini marshmallows. 10 cups then you add some butter, some white chocolate chips and another copious amount of non sugared gum drops. In this case I am using Dots. The kind you get in the movie theater. These are readily available in most grocery, drug and dollar stores. I have tweaked the recipe to suit my preference. I think this nougat is much better with more dots than less. I am also using the tropical version dots because the store subbed it for the regular version. Either way it was great.
Learn from my mistakes. The first time I made this I did it in a pot on the stove and scorched the marshmallow. While the candy was passable, it was not as good as it could have been. Lesson learned. This is a recipe much better done in the microwave! Melt the marshmallows and the butter on high for 1 minute. Stir. It will be sticky so spray your wooden spoon with some cooking oil. Return to the microwave for another minute. At this point watch so it does not cook over the edge. The last 10 seconds will be crucial. Remove from the microwave and stir to a velvety smooth texture.
Now you have this molten marshmallow bog in your bowl. Add the white chocolate chips and stir until melted. Then add the Dots. Get a good utensil because it gets really stiff as can be attested to by the broken wooden spoon. LOL! I sprayed a heavy spatula and folded the dots into the mixture. Then I poured it all into the prepared pan. Smooth this out evenly and cover. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, but really overnight is best. Then you can slice and cut into cubes. This makes a ton of delicious nougat candy and I know you will love putting this fun and festive treat on your holiday table!
You should store this in the refrigerator until ready to serve or gift and let the recipient know to do the same. This is chewy and soft and delicious. It really takes you back if you remember the original! You can also make this in advance and freeze it tightly wrapped for up to three months! That makes this candy recipe a real keeper!
I hope you give this four ingredient, retro jelly nougat a try sometime soon and I hope you love it!
Happy Eating!

Could we use wax paper instead of parchment? I'm so making this.
It has been my experience that wax paper will not release hot things like parchment paper.
Bought back memories! I will be making it!
Thank you! ❤️
I love you for posting this simple recipe! My favourite as a child!
A suggestion: I use a oversized large Tupperware bowl for melting marshmallows in strong plastic ware as it does not stick to edges, as tends to so with glass. Another thought is to use a stiff heavy duty plastic/vinyl/stiff silicone lifter like one uses for flipping eggs. Again, it does not stick as bad and should sustain the strength to stir.
In Italian nougat, I think a final step of very light dusting of icing sugar is a barrier for preventing some sticking before wrapping.
When I have time, I will try this!
Thank you! 😊
You can buy rice paper sheets which is what Torrone uses
I wish stores still had Brach’s Pick a Mix displays. But, then I wish there was still Penny Candy, for a penny. And Candy Bars for a nickel, and Dairy Queen cones for 10 cents. Those were the days!
My local grocery store still has the Brachs Pick A Mix barrells🤷♀️
Fred Meyer grocery store which I believe is a Kroger store has the Brachs candies

Me too 🤗
Me too. Remember grandpa taking us with him to pick up animal feed and he would give us each a dime to go to the little home store and we would get our favorite candies.. Oh my those were the days. I wish my grandchildren could enjoy just a simpler and more caring world. Great memories.
I am a 70's kid as well. I got flashbacks listening to you. I loved the candy as well. Thanks for the recipe.
I'm so old I remember buying candy by the penny!
😂😂ME TOO!
Wow lucky, 90s kids like me only remember paying at least $0.25 for gumballs; I've never seen anything sold for a nickel or dime, much less pennies.
Me too,and this was my favorite. I'M 75
Me, too, 73, from the Stone Age.
I’m 51 Noreen and this reminds me so much of my childhood!!!
Our next door neighbor, when I was little...(we lived out in the country in Oregon) he was a little old man and he always had these candy squares wrapped in plastic in his shirt pocket..... he and his wife would buy the candy just to give to me, because it was my VERY favorite. ......and he would always give me one..... just like magic...I fell for it every time! I really did think it was magic, that my favorite nougat candy would end up in his shirt pocket somehow!!! It’s one of my very first memories..... him picking me up, walking me around the garden, looking at all the pretty flowers, while I enjoyed my magic candy!!
Our neighbors were an elderly couple, they didn’t have any children and they absolutely adored me. They treated me just like their own ..... what lovely people they were 💕❤️🙏
I had a very painful childhood and I’m so grateful for Mr and Mrs Cooper loving on me the way they did!! They made a huge difference in my life and it all started with that nougat candy!! (That you can’t find in the store any more.... I bet I haven’t seen it in 20 years or more)
Can’t wait to make this 💕❤️ thank you!
What a lovely memory of two people who should have been grandparents..... well they were grandma and grandpa to you. Thank you for sharing. It's nice to hear you all had each other for a time.
Thank you for sharing your story. Brachs still makes the candy nougat at Easter time. I find them at Dollar General stores. This year I found 14 bags.... bought them all.
What a lovely memory for you. It sounds like you made a big difference in the older couples lives too. I live in a very small town in Mid Michigan and we have a small fruit market that still carries all the Brach's candies. The nougats are my favorite and I treat myself to a few every time I go there
Nice, thanks for sharing👍😊
@@autumnvalentie3935 I know u really like those candies, but that’s why there wasn’t any left for the rest of us. Please share, and share alike.
I loved these, the Neapolitan coconuts and the coffee flavored discs. Oh yeah don' t forget the rootbeer barrels. 🙏💗✌
I have a very old horse, retired and a pet now. He loves root beer barrels. When I can find them, I buy a bag for him. It's his favorite treat. 💞
Oh yes🤤🤤🤤
Rootbeer barrels! Oh boy! Yum!!!
Yes!! The Neapolitan coconut bars! My favorite!
And the flavored caramels
I miss the Brachs stand. I hadn’t thought of it forever.
I miss it too. It was so fun taking my youngest there when we had it in our Super Valu.
It’s still available from Brach Candy you may order it by the pd
Thanks for the reminder that life was once so pleasing. A piece of candy gives me joy and what a small item that sparks such positivity.
I was just THINKING about these candies last night, wondering whatever happened to them, and rather wanting to eat them again now. Then today, this video shows up in my recommendeds! Talk about perfect timing!
You may still order them on line directly from Brach Candies. They are a little softer now but that’s you get them so fresh
I see this only at Easter... And it makes me think of my mama. It was her favorite.
Me too!! Love and miss her. You gave me a little choke up with your comment.
I miss the Pick-A-Mix so much! I loved the big single wrapped orange jelly bears and the jelly bean nougats.
I was tempted to make nougat for the holidays a couple years ago, and they sell a rice paper that is totally edible (!) that acts like parchment, but you leave it on the nougat, because you can eat it. I think it would be a game changer here.
Oh! I miss those displays! And the display with all the mixed nuts too! Thank you for the recipe!
Brach's Jelly Nougats were my grandmother's favorite in the 70s, so many memories...thank u, looks delicious❣
Brach's Jelly Nougats were one of my all time favorites. This recipe was AMAZING...I can't believe how simple it was. Thank you!
Does it really taste the same?
@@cstar44b91 Not perfectly exactly, but it was pretty close, and the nougat was very delicious. What kind of gummy candies you use will make a difference. If you like to experiment, you can also potentially add all kinds of goodies to the basic nougat also.
Those jelly nougats were one of my favorite candies.
This tastes just like the Brachs nugget candy! OMGosh delicious!!!
I loved the pick a mix center! My grandma would always let me get a little bag as long as I got butterscotch for grandpa. I hope you’re feeling well!
I just made this for Christmas and EVERYONE loved it. They ate it all! They were actually texting me asking if they could have more. This was such a hit I'm gonna make it every Christmas. Double or triple batch. Thank you for the super easy recipe.
Does it really taste like the Brachs brand ??
@@noclu4u384 yes it does. Everyone loves it. Have to refrigerate it tho
I made this candy this morning using the red & green Dots for Christmas tomorrow. Eating these bring back fond childhood memories. Thank you so much for sharing.
I found the red and green xmas dots and also the "naughty nice" black n cherry colors. Dots really upped their game.
Oh wow. I loved those nougats as a kid in the sixties. I was telling someone about them last week. I wish they were still easily available
I remember you brings back memories. Those was the good old days
My local grocery store still has the brachs mix candy . I get a bunch of it for my grandson at Easter each year 😊
Where you live because Nashville doesn't even have it and Nashville is hugh
That message was from 4 years ago. . You cant find them anymore . I just talked to Brachs and they discontinued them .
My favor when I was a kid ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ thank for sharing ❤❤❤❤❤❤ I canot wait to make it love it
Such a fun classic that I remember from childhood. Thanks for bringing it back!
Wow brings back memories of grandma's house
Bet this would work with peppermint candy. It seems there was Brachs soft nougat in peppermint that was round and had a Christmas tree in the middle. My Grandmother had a candy jar filled with the assorted flavored chewy toffees in the shiny metallic wrappers. I'd pick out butter rum, coffee, vanilla. Then Neopolatian coconut squares.
That was peppermint taffy. Very different
They still have those Christmas ones
I’m 31 the candy station was an amazing experience that I shared with my grandma for years. I loved the assorted soft caramels🤤
totally my grandma always had butterscotch discs in her purse and the little caramels on a bowl in the living room
@@tbernstein Lol! Yes the famous candy dish! I felt so special picking candy from it because it was for her “church visitors” only 😂❤️ Good times!
I'm older than you, but I loved the trips to the store and the Brach's candy with mammaw.
These are just so beautiful and festive.... who wouldn't want to receive these as a gift.. and they would look great in your gingerbread houses for stained glass windows sliced real thinly.. you have really outdone yourself.. beautiful
Oh, what a great treat! I remember these!
We used to hunt for deposit bottles 2cents ,turn them in at the general store and buy penny candy. I liked the candy dots on the paper.
Omgoodness how I remember and miss.
Wow! Love this...one of my favorite childhood memories is seeing the Branch’s display at the grocery store. I would always get the fruit nougat. Don’t think they make them anymore so this is a treasure. Oh, and the Italian candy you reference in your video is Torrone. I know because it’s also my favorite Italian nougat with sliced almonds that I grew up with.
Thank you for saying how to store and the best way to store 😊
Oh my goodness, I remember going to Winn Dixie and pivcking out the candies from that big display they had. My favs were definitely these jellies and the neopolitan coconuts 🤗 what sweet memories
Oh my gosh, I love this candy.
These were my absolute favorite
One of my favorites
I remember these and the Brach's candy center but not from my childhood but from my kids childhood. I lived too far out in the country to have the Brach's candy center in the store.
I just made four batches of this candy. I put the chips, butter and marshmallows all together in the glass bowl and run it for 20 seconds at a time in the microwave until it is melted sufficiently to put in the dots. I also cut the Dots in half, but that's probably not necessaary, though it allows them to go a bit farther (Dots are hard to find in this location this year). I just go right to a dish lined with parchment paper sprayed with cooking oil, then wrap tightly and refrigerate for a couple of hours before cutting. This candy is great and is well received by everyone who gets a chance to sample it. It brings back memories of never getting enough of it when I was a kid.
I love this candy wow. Making it. I just did potato pinwheel candy. Mom had alot of kids so I'm happy to make them. Ten kids back in 1965 mom did everything.
Glad I’m not the only one who fights food sometimes! 😂😂😂😂
Thanks!
I love these almost as much as Christmas nougat!
Hi Noreen! This brings back such good memories! My grandpa used to keep these in the house when I was a little girl. Thanks for sharing!!!
I made it and it was yummy to your tummy.... here a suggestion tape the parchment paper to side of pan it won't lift up. Making more today for Christmas...
My ALL TIME FAVORITE candy!!!
Wow talking about a throwback . And the memories of the candies sold like that at the grocery store. I wouldn't have ever thought about in my lifetime. 😮
Oh yes...These are definitely one of my absolute favorite treats from Brachs! So excited for this recipe! Thanks Noreen!
At kroger’s is where I used to get that yummy candy 😋 Lord please bring back those days perfect anytime especially for Christmas ty for this idea
I have always wondered about these candies & what exactly were in them. I’m definitely going to give it a try. Thanks Noreen!! I had no idea that was marshmallows & white chocolate. I always thought it was a taffy kind of stuff. 47 years old & I learned something new....lol
Well this is how I make them. They probably did use a taffy recipe. This is quick and easy and a very close rendition of the nougat I remember.
YES!! They taste more like a taffy texture!! I agree!! But whatever, because they taste SO GOOD, and they have a unique look to them!!
@@NoreensKitchenOfficial Is this your own recipe that u put together?? If it is, u did a good job!! I could NEVER make something like THIS up!!
@@NoreensKitchenOfficialBrachs made a nougat. Sugar, corn syrup, egg whites.
Oh my goodness, I was just saying that I missed those pic a mix centers cause you could get exactly what you wanted. The jelly nougats were one of my favorites and I never see them more. Look forward to trying this recipe.
Those candy islands were in stores even in the 90s, iirc. Loved them.
Oy yes I remember well. I'm 46 and wish they still had the Brach's candy mix, such great candy but I imagine as the years went on they probably lost ALOT due to theft. I found their chews a few years ago and hadn't seen them in years, and I love them so much!! The ones like flavored tootsie rolls except so much better!! The vanilla, maple, butter pecan but that wasn't the name, orange, and so many more!! I also wish I could find the Lifesaver sucker BLUEBERRIES and cream!!! Or the strawberry banana, strawberries and cream or any of them!!! Your video brings back memories! I swear my mom would give us a handful of pennies and we would spend the grocery shopping trip at the penny candy or gum machine! Good times!!
Dots are one of my favorite candies. Maybe I’ll buy a couple of extra boxes and pick out the red and green ones for Christmas.
I am 51 and I remember this candy was one of about 4 or 5 kinds my grandma would put in a baggy for me and my brothers as young children. I havent seen them in about 25 or 30 years. I cant wait to make them thank you so much for sharing
I used to eat these all the time as a kid. Wonderful memories. Thank you.
These bring back such happy memories of eating Brachs these candles. Wow thank you for bring back the treats.
Made that for Christmas treats and folks LOVED it! Big hit! Thanks for the video!
Would be so pretty for Christmas with just red and green candy. Thank you for the video
I made this recipe for my Christmas gift boxes last year. My parents, sisters, brother, and kids are always after me to make more. Thank you so much for this recipe.
Gosh, you're making me hungry! That looks so good. I love that it is only 4 ingredients and one bowl clean-up.
These candies bring back so many happy childhood memories! Thank you for sharing!!
I remember this. Thanks for the throwback. 🙂❤
This was 1 of my husband's favorite
I loved these. These were my fav. Takes me back to my childhood. 80’s were the best. Thank you for the recipe. I’m going to make it this weekend
Hope you enjoy
Thanks Noreen! I will be making this for Christmas!
These were my favorite as a kid!
I can only find these at Christmas. I buy several bags and eat them throughout the winter months as they are happy memories for me.
I was very surprised that coworkers turned their nose up at them, even though they are mostly from the same Era.
My grandparents always had this candy on hand it sure brings back a lot of good memories.
I remember that! I especially loved those chocolate, strawberry and vanilla Neapolitan things with the coconut in it! That was my favorite for sure!
Yes!
They had a Carmel stripe too!
My mom would buy these sugar-coated, coconut treats for me and my two brothers growing up in Chgo. She had a little ditty she'd always say, "A streak of lean, a streak of fat, if you don't like it you can bring it back." Of course, bringing NOTHING back was ever a consideration (tee hee)!
Brach's pick a mix was there up until the early 2000's in my area! I'm in my 20s and grew up with these! Thank you for the recipe!!!!
So grateful 🙏 to age and finally have memories that new generations sadly don't understand. I'm making this today and I'm so happy
Made it in a pot on the stove and it turned out perfect. Sprayed my hands with oil and smoothed it out. Can't wait to taste it. Thank you very much for this recipe ❤️🇨🇦
This look incredible! I love jelly nougats. You can still buy Brach’s jelly nougats during Easter, but these were still available all year, even in the 90’s. They also used to make these cream truffles that were just perfect for kids. I have a bad sweet tooth, and those truffles were so big and so rich that I’d only have one piece of candy. Oh, I miss them!
I can’t wait to make these. They’re an all time favorite.
Ahhhh yes brachs...this was my favorite too. 😊 thank you
Bracks candies of days that have gone by . Grabbed all kinds of different flavors. Through them in a brown paper bag . To be weighed by the pound . Jelly Nougats was always my Daddy's and I favorite candy . Thank you so much for sharing your recipe . Definitely keeping this recipe . Merry Christmas . To You And Family.
One of my favorite treats when we went to the local candy store. I would buy two. Yippie!
Yessss! Thank you! This brings back such beautiful memories of reaching into the huge glass Lance jar my Grandma had on the counter and bringing out these nougats! My favorite!!! Thanks for sharing! I’ll be making these soon!
My fav of Brachs pick a mix! I was just craving some of these the other day!
I'm 59 and I still buy the jelly filled nougat's. I love them !!!!
What a beautiful treat. You did a magnificent job. I love your recipes!
That is one of my favorite Brach’s candies. Thanks for the how to video.
Lol- I totally remember the Brachs candy stand in the produce dept.! Thanks for the video and the nostalgia!
My favorite was the layered coconut!😂❤ i can't wait to try this!! Thank you! ~ Mamaw Christy 🥰
Ooh can't wait to try this. I do a retro Big Hunk candy recipe with the marshmallows and white chocolate and butter then instead of DOTS. I add chopped nuts, same great chewy goodness. Thank you!!
I love a FRESH Big Hunk candy bar! The dentist likes the stale (hard) ones. I also love the Look candy bar covered in dark chocolate which was and still is rare for candy bars. Milk chocolate is way too fatty and sweet. Only dark for me.
We in the UK also had pick and mix at Woolworths and boy do i miss it. Also we had something similar to that nougat called a Jelly Bar made by Cadburys but it was wrapped in dairy chocolate not white and the jelly stuff were tiny bits not large gum drops. My gran used to sell then in her sweet shop when i was a kid. Happy days 👍
I haven’t seen these in years, I used to love these. I think I’m going to make a bunch for presents. Thanks for sharing.
OMG!!! I remember when i was a kid in the 70s my mom bought a bag of pick a mix by Brachs once a month and i always made sure i was with her to get what i wanted. and this candy your making was one of my fave's. thank you so much for brining back my childhood.
I just came across your video and so glad I did! Yes this was my favorite candy back in the day. I'm definitely going to try this and use red and green gumdrops for Christmas, thank you!
Hi Noreen
I have make this every year for xmas but only using green red and yellow. Your recipe is a much larger on than I have so I like that. I like that you used the microwave much easier. I spray everything too cause so sticky. I have used jube jube for this as it's hard to get the dots and it turned out really nice.
Wow 😮 so colourful
My mom and I used to go to Woolworth a store that sold all kinds of good old fashion candies
I am so excited to see your video and have the recipe! Thank you!! I loved these and the butter rum caramels! 😋😋😋
Hearing him chuckle in the background is adorable.
These were my favorite as a kid. You cant find them anymore. Our grocery store had Brach pick mix before covid but no nougats.
❤This was always my favorite!!! ❤🥳
Thank you for taking me back to yesteryear!
I loved those jelly nougats.
Thank you so much for this recipe. I made these a year ago and it was the best thing I've ever made. I haven't made it since because I want to eat it all. I'm going to make it again. It is so unbelievably good.
