I've viewed several video's on replacing the Mixet shower valve. You are the first to mention having the valve in the open position when removing and same while installing. Master bedroom shower no problem replacing with the valve closed or open position. Kids shower was an animal, valve had to be in the open position to install or it was a bear trying to get in. These little tips go a long way, thanks!

Just moved into an apartment that has this. It "snaps" over to the left amd instantly goes from hot to cold. We have to set it just right or it will snap over. Can we just replace the handle itself, ourselves, without having to go and shut off the water?
Yes buy the all metal lever from Amazon or a plumbing supply house near you, sounds like that’s what you are dealing with otherwise you might have to replace the cartridge as well.
I have been working on this replacement for over a week. It seems the flow control screw is moved when the temperature lever is changed. In the cartridge I removed the temperature control spins freely. Did I get a defective cartridge or did I install it wrong?
Thanks for your video. With this and another, I replaced the valve and got my water off (without having to go outside and shut off the water to the house constantly. Lol) I'm a little confused on putting on the temp paddle. On the valve, there is a groove on the side that the red dot is on. Is the small notch on the paddle handle supposed to go into that groove? There is a small hole on the opposite side so not sure where the little notch on the handle is supposed to go. Thanks so much.
My handle is cracked and spinning around right now. It’s turning off the water however I don’t think that’ll be forever. Can I change the handle to a steel one or do I have to go with a plastic one such as the original
Hello there... I have this shower handle in an apartment. It's gotten rather dirty under there and i'd like to take off that to top knob to clean it and put it back. Can I do that much without bothering the apartment folks about shutting off the water?
Yes you can remove everything except for the cartridge inside the valve without having to shut the water off below, Remove the Volume control first(the round handle that controls the water pressure) then you may have to slide a small philips inside the lever handle to loosen the screw before removing that piece but often times you can just wiggle it off, Theres only a small philips screw that holds the plate on loosen that and remove the plate but do not remove the sleeve that comes through the plate.
Also, your vid is the best. Although it's common sense the fact that you stated to turn off the main water & to have lever in open position is very important for beginners to know.
Alrighty..question! I'm trying to replace my valve. It's currently a mixit valve. But wanting to replace it with another style valve. Would I just follow these steps, and replace it with the correct stem? Or would I have to replace the pipe stuff behind the wall. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Attention: If the “hex sleeve nut” is really stuck in there, I highly suggest spraying lots of PB blaster for a few minutes in all the grooves and then heat gunning the nut for 5-10 minutes. This will help remove it! Also, use a flat adjustable wrench so you don’t strip the nut too much. Please try this before calling your plumber! I tried so many different ways; I even got a plumber to check it, to say $290 for attempting to remove it and $900 if they have to replace the valve and open the wall. Just passing my experience so you don’t go through the same trouble I had. Like this if this help so more people can see it ❤

My hex sleeve is beyond messed up. Covered in build up, got that off, and it's stripped on some of the corners, and it won't budge even the tiniest bit. I tried the pb buster, I don't even know how I'd begin trying to soak it in clr. Any advice for me 😭
so my sleeve is really stuck on there. I rented the place out for 6 years, the corrosion and hard water made it expand, i see 2 hairline cracks on the sleeve shot pb blaster in it still not threading out i just dont want o put so much torque on it that it breaks the supply lines to the valve body in there. any other suggestions? is it possible to break the supply lines?
What I recommend you do is take a large pipe wrench or a pipe wrench with a breaker bar on it to give you some leverage and just crank on that bad boy, the sleeve will normally slide off with some effort but if you clamp it toward the front closer to you and have a good amount of leverage I think you’ll get it out normally in the wall the valve should be strapped so it’s not very likely that you’ll break it unless you feel it’s loose in the wall.
What type of shower handles can be used to replace these Mixet knobs if someone wants a nicer looking set up? Without having to replace all the inner workings behind the knob, hope I'm making sense.
No sir, if you’ve got the longer one you’ll need to replace it with the longer one, the process is all still the same. I’ve only done one of the longer cartridges is 20 years
I replaced the cartridge and I hear a little drip downstairs every time someone showers upstairs. Did I not tighten it enough? I’m afraid to over tighten it and break the whole thing.
If you are hearing a tick noise during or after running the hot water and you have copper plumbing it’s likely thermal expansion. If you aren’t seeing water don’t worry about it, if it doesn’t happen when you only run cold water it’s likely just thermal expansion
Why would the temperature adjust handle spin 360°? Mine is spinning without stopping but turns the water on and off just fine with the front handle, but the water doesn't get very hot and the back handle will spin continuously.
You need to get the all metal trim, the back half(the temperature control) has probably rounded out and is no longer catching the part of the cartridge meant to regulate the temperature.
@@PlumbingExplained is the handle supposed to catch the metal sleeve that goes over the valve? Or is the catch mechanism located on the interior of the of the valve assembly?
Only the hex portion needs to be replaced once thats off the sleeve should slide off, they actually come apart when they are very old and broken, Trying using some CLR like spray CLR all over it and let it set for a minute, get the CLR up inside the sleeve if you can. Calcium lime and rust remover thats CLR any Calcium lime and rust remover should work bro. Hope that works.

@@danielrivas3397 Thank Daniel! Yea im in remission now as of a couple weeks ago still might have to do radiation but looks like everything is going good!
Any tips on how to lubricate the cartridge? Mine is relatively new. But the rust and calcium from the water is making it hard. I don't want to keep putting new one every year.
Remove the cartridge and spray some CLR into the valve body, then you can take like a 1" or 3/4" wire brush for cleaning fittings and clean out the inside of the valve body then take your plumbers grease and lube up the inside of the valve body and also lube up cartridge liberally.
im sorry Ciara youd have to change your dang entire shower valve or get some aftermarket universal brand that will work for MIXIT.... hope that helps I know it sucks the builders used these friggin valves everywhere and theyve got two choices for trim CRAP OR CRAP
After installing per video instructions we noticed that the lever pointed toward cold come out hot and pointed toward hot comes out cold. What did we do to cause it to reverse the temperatures?
You just need to remove the handles and flip it around. Should be fine. If you still have trouble let me know I can do a video showing you. My grandmother has one of these valves still
One thing about these mixit valves, you can't get 100% cold or hot. Cold and hot water are constantly mixed. The temperature adjustment lets get more or less.
Yep you are correct, Thats a very common complaint I have from customers who inherited these with their home. You couldn't pay me to install a mixit valve today haha I know they dont make them but if somebody found one somewhere you wouldn't be able to pay me enough to do that to one of my customers.
Hello! if i have an issue where my hot water from my shower runs for 9 minutes, but then goes cold/lukewarm, is that a mixing valve issue or something else?
Sounds like you are getting cross over, Do you have a hot water recirculating pump on your water heater? It could be a mixing valve gone bad like you said also. Id try and find whatever shower or faucet in the house doesnt seem to have that problem and then change that cartridge and itll solve the problem.
Plumbing Explained hi thanks for the response. I have a slant/fin combustion boiler model lx-85a, and it has an accompanying storage tank , not sure if that helps or adds anything to the convo. I’m in an apartment so its the single shower head
The red dot goes down, The hot should always be to your to your left, if its backwards turn the hande til the paddle is upside down then remove the handle and re attach it so its facing up.
Yea id pull the cartridge out and turn the water on a few times to the house for a few seconds at a time, try jolting it like turn it on full blast for 10 seconds then off then back on immediately for another 5-10 and off a couple times. Do that a few times see if you notice anything in the bottom of the shower or tub.
@@PlumbingExplained I turned off the hot water going into the hot water tank and ran the shower. I get good flow. Ok seems like the cold water path is ok, plenty of cold water. I guess these mixit valves do not give you a completely cold or completely hot, best I get is a luke warm?
Gozilla Trade no you should be able to get it steaming hot, I would take the cartridge out and turn the water on and let it try to flush out any debris that might be caught in the hot side port, are you getting good hot water everywhere else ?
@@PlumbingExplained Oh it's not the lack of hot water. I cant' get enough cold water. I do get plenty cold water after shutting off the water heater so the flow seems good.
I have another video that shows you how to remove the struck cartridge unfortunately no they dont make a puller im pretty sure the company that originally made the Mixet valves is out of business. Heres the link to my other video hope it helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. ua-cam.com/video/DJplQSjv3Ac/v-deo.html
You may need to spin the cartridge around sounds like it’s maybe upside down or possible some debris in the valve, pull the cartridge out with the water off of course, then while you’ve got the cartridge out go turn the water on and off a couple times but make sure you’ve got the shower door closed or curtain closed so the water is contained inside the shower.
Hello, my faucet handle looks visually looks very similar to yours? what are the chances they are the same unit? If so where did you buy this unit from can it be bought from amazon or a homedepot? sorry i am plumping iliterate:( mechanic here.
Sorry for such a late reply, you can buy them at Home Depot, Amazon, lowes any other hardware store should also carry them it’s called a Mixit cartridge they make two types a shorter one and a longer one, I’ve only installed one of the long ones in 20 years of plumbing so you’ve likely got the short one.
Having a problem with my install. The cartridge seems to spin on itself …temp adjuster and valve turn together when I open the water. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
I cannot seem the find the right cartridge. I bought the metal temp and. volume handles, but they ride on each other. I can't control one without holding the other in place. Sometimes I can't get to point where water is completely off. This is post 68 but non pressured. Would a 20 years old valve be non-pressured. Thanks
Best narration of mix it cartridge replacement video. You are give clear & thorough instructions. Are the washers already in the handle and you are just putting it back together or did you buy new washers? Thanks
Not all valves have the hot and cold stops and I would highly recommend you don’t mess with those stops unless you absolutely have to, I’ve had times where I’ve turned those stops off and when I turn them back on they leak out of the stop at that point what are you gonna do? Unless you’ve already got replacement stops on site you are gonna have to order them because most supply houses don’t carry them, the thread pattern is weird so you can’t just temporarily thread a plug in, so now your either replacing the entire valve or letting the stop drip down into the wall until you get the replacement stops shipped to you. Hope that answers your question @Lovespitbulls
@@PlumbingExplained Thank you very much. My main controls four apartments in my complex so I wanted to see if I can do it without. I appreciate your time
@@KaosonaSRRDaniel if you have the valve that has its own stops you might be able to. Take the trim off see if there are two flathead screw driver lookin ports one on each side of the valve. If you are in an apartment buildings it’s very possible they used that style valve so you can service it without having to shut down the building
Just saw it off bro, youre replacing it anyway get a new handle set while your at it, the back piece is usually rounded out and needs be replaced anyways. saw it off behind the handle, DO NOT SAW INTO THE SLEEVE
Mine completely cracked off I just know my landlord will charge me for it but I made a notice for repair. It feels so cheap though 🙄 sometimes it would get stuck
Did he atleast have it replaced with a metal one?. Your landlord sounds like an asshole theres now way that was your fault! When these go bad specially with the plastic trim they break!
Is there any other type or brand of cartridge that I can replace this brand without changing the pipe or valve behind it? This is a piece of shit and always broken in my house after I bought it new and a few months of use!
Unfortunately man as far as i know you can only replace this cartridge with Mixit cartridges and the Trim is extremely limited so you really dont get much to choose from…. I almost always try and talk my customers into switching these valves out if they can afford it because you are right this is a total piece of shit valve.
My problem is the sleeve on my mixet stem is so calcified and worned down that there's not purchase for my wrench. Is there a way around this? I even tried a plier wrench and manage to wrench off the metal sleeve around the sleeve, I've looked everywhere and didn't know this existed!
The new cartridge comes with a new sleeve, use PB a later and a big pipe wrench with leverage as it’ll come off, just put it on the tip of the sleeve only the tip is screwed down
@@PlumbingExplained Yeah, I was afraid I might brake something, so when I screwed off the metal sleeve around the sleeve itself (the main sleeve is still there stuck), I stopped. It's now just an ugly looking sleeve with a wornout/corroded head. So instead of trying to find purchase with the worn out head/wrenchflat of the sleeve, I just muscle it off using a pipe wrench near the tip (after the worned out head)?
The video is ok, but you never told us how to orient the mixing valve. I installed mine upside down and had the hot water coming on the right side instead of the left. I had to take it out and flip it.
Sorry about that Mark, red dot needs to be facing up, You don’t have to take it out and do it again though just turn the shower on and rotate the temp handle 180 degrees then turn the water off remove the handles and reinstall the temperature handle in the correct direction and the temperature will be back to normal.
Yeah you probably done it many times but you need to explain how the cartridge goes in, just to let you know the cartridge has a mark you should explain that..
I know Its not always that easy, just trying to share some tips on how to make it easier on yourself. I been doin this a long time, im not trying to down play how hard it can at all, just like anything in plumbing and most things in life sometimes changing this cartridge is a piece of cake, sometimes itll make you question why you do this shit.
I knew I was in for a fight when I removed the first knob screw and even a hammer and chisel and pry bar wouldn't get it off....nothing a 4" grinder couldnt handle. Everything else went great. Thanks
When I see how easy it was for you to insert the cartridge, I realized that indeed life is somehow easier for other people! Oh well, time to get a hammer and smash the shit out of it.

Thanks for your informative & helpful video, but there seems to be some inconsistency with the red dot…in your reply to @sergiogonzalez7446 1 yr ago you stated orient the red dot facing down; in your reply to @markthompson5803 10 months ago you stated orient the red dot facing up. I asked my local plumbing store, they said red dot down, I watched another video, he said red dot down..then I actually read the Mixet manufacturer’s instruction sheet and it says “Red mark on the stem assembly must point up.”

There’s only one or two other handles for this unit and they’re all ugly
If i want to temporarily change this style to a modern style in my apartment how would i do that
im sorry Ciara youd have to change your dang entire shower valve or get some aftermarket universal brand that will work for MIXIT.... hope that helps I know it sucks the builders used these friggin valves everywhere and theyve got two choices for trim CRAP OR CRAP
Any suggestions for an after market universal replacement?
After installing per video instructions we noticed that the lever pointed toward cold come out hot and pointed toward hot comes out cold. What did we do to cause it to reverse the temperatures?
You just need to remove the handles and flip it around. Should be fine. If you still have trouble let me know I can do a video showing you. My grandmother has one of these valves still
What’s the number of the kit
Not enough detail about positioning of the cartdrige when inserting. What about the red dot
The red dot goes down, The hot should always be to your to your left, if its backwards turn the hande til the paddle is upside down then remove the handle and re attach it so its facing up.
Good content
Thank you brother take care!
I've replaced the cartridge but still have same problem, not enough cold water. Maybe the cold path needs flushing?
What if your cartridge gets stuck inside ...do they make a puller for mixet...🤷♂️
1:56 It's so much easier to put the washers onto the cartridge.
Can this type be swapped to a hot cold only not a pull and twist??cartridge?
You’d have to open the wall and change the valve
Now how do you put the handle back on correctly
My shower wouldn’t switch of so do I need one of theses
How do you fix a hard knob to pull out to turn water on ??
Replace the cartridge OR take the cartridge out spray it down with CLR, then grease up all the O rings and reinstall it.
I am doing this for the third time in the same faucet because I cant get the hot water to flow shower head. What am I doing wrong
Thank you for this video I was definitely able to save some money!
Youre very welcome bro! Glad to help!
I replace the valve but the hot and cold are mixed up now can you help
Very easy fix my friend just take the handles off and turn the piece the handle attaches to around 180 degrees
Any way left or right
Thank you 😊
@@robertocruzjr159 glad to help!!
Is there a way to change it to a handle?
Having a problem with my install. The cartridge seems to spin on itself …temp adjuster and valve turn together when I open the water. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
@D. Kitch unfortunately I was stumped by this one and unable to resolve. We ended up putting the original valve back inside.
I cannot seem the find the right cartridge. I bought the metal temp and. volume handles, but they ride on each other. I can't control one without holding the other in place. Sometimes I can't get to point where water is completely off.
LASCO HL-59 Metal Chrome Plated Lever Handle Fits Mixet Brand
LASCO HC-40 Chrome Plated Volume Control Handle Fits Mixet Brand
Both on Amazon. Bought over cheap plastic.
It sounds like you have the more Rare of the Mixit cartridges its longer than the normal ones here is the part #MS3T
@@PlumbingExplained I am confused. How many types are there? I see they are all 4 1/2" long. Some sat non pressure and other say post 1968, and pressured. My home is 20 years old and I was trying to change handles. Mine came with plastic ball type and went to metal. www.amazon.com/BrassCraft-Mfg-SKD0216-MIXET-KIT-CHROME/dp/B000NID7S6/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=mixet+handle&qid=1596844266&s=hi&sr=1-7
It shows the SLD1350 as the match. This is post 68 but non pressured. Would a 20 years old valve be non-pressured.
Thanks
@@polocash11 I am having the same problem, were you able to resolve the issue?
im lost on how to adjust the temp, please help my showers been cold for 2 days
Same!!!
Thanks !! 👍🏻
Best narration of mix it cartridge replacement video. You are give clear & thorough instructions. Are the washers already in the handle and you are just putting it back together or did you buy new washers? Thanks
No It all comes with the new cartridge.
Subbed,
Video is good, but i stayed for the pliers.
Fcking genius design.
Im literally MINDFCK, HOW WELL THE DESIGN IS.
WISH I HAD THT PATENT
How to adjust the pressure?
Can't you just turn off the water at the valve, hot and cold behind the plate cover?
What happens if i dont turn the main water valve off?
Gonna take a shower.
You got me laughing out loud over here. Is it possible though or is it too much pressure?
@@KaosonaSRRDaniel not possible do not try
@@PlumbingExplained Thank you very much. My main controls four apartments in my complex so I wanted to see if I can do it without. I appreciate your time
@@KaosonaSRRDaniel if you have the valve that has its own stops you might be able to. Take the trim off see if there are two flathead screw driver lookin ports one on each side of the valve. If you are in an apartment buildings it’s very possible they used that style valve so you can service it without having to shut down the building
there's a lot of Mixet Showers up here in the High Desert. changed them out off n' on. Like.
Yea they are common builders used them to save money.
@@PlumbingExplained make sense. Question Chris, how much do you Charge for a Job like that? changing out a Mixet.
Robert really sorry i didnt reply man i didnt see your message. I normally charge between $175-$225 for something liek that.
Man everytime I try taking that screw off it twists the valve on how can I get it off with no problems???
Just saw it off bro, youre replacing it anyway get a new handle set while your at it, the back piece is usually rounded out and needs be replaced anyways. saw it off behind the handle, DO NOT SAW INTO THE SLEEVE
Mine completely cracked off I just know my landlord will charge me for it but I made a notice for repair. It feels so cheap though 🙄 sometimes it would get stuck
Did he atleast have it replaced with a metal one?. Your landlord sounds like an asshole theres now way that was your fault! When these go bad specially with the plastic trim they break!
If ao do u have a part#plz???
Subscribed! :)
Metal on metal always causes weakness in the plating... a piece of inner tube or equiv. should always be handy for the visual parts.
@@PlumbingExplained Thank you!
@@naruto21920 you are welcome! Thank you for watching the video and commenting I really appreciate it!
@@PlumbingExplained THANK YOU!
Did exactly what you advised, simple pipe wrench worked!
@@PlumbingExplained Moved into a house with it backwards. Now i know what to do. thanks!
Yeah you probably done it many times but you need to explain how the cartridge goes in, just to let you know the cartridge has a mark you should explain that..
It’s not always that easy friend ‘ I spent 45 mins on one “ pain in the ass
I know Its not always that easy, just trying to share some tips on how to make it easier on yourself. I been doin this a long time, im not trying to down play how hard it can at all, just like anything in plumbing and most things in life sometimes changing this cartridge is a piece of cake, sometimes itll make you question why you do this shit.
I knew I was in for a fight when I removed the first knob screw and even a hammer and chisel and pry bar wouldn't get it off....nothing a 4" grinder couldnt handle. Everything else went great. Thanks
I thought maybe just a different stule of cartridge????
What apartment was that at? Lol
Hell no if i see this valve im telling them to get a delta 🤣🤣
Hahahaha Delta definitely makes a great shower valve but I prefer Moen!
When I see how easy it was for you to insert the cartridge, I realized that indeed life is somehow easier for other people! Oh well, time to get a hammer and smash the shit out of it.

Narration is good but you moved too fast. Didn't show exactly what you were talking about when it came to the valve.
I have another video I’m editing right now I’ll post it shortly!! Same exact cartridge I think a little better video
I think this is geared toward other plumbers
I’m a plumber here in Southern California with a lot of competition already and now you show people how to do it on UA-cam oh my gosh only for because you want your likes and thumbs up how thoughtful of you😠
How long have you been a plumber? These videos aren’t taking anything away from you and it’s that type of thinking and attitude that holds you back, when you do good enough work, treat your customers properly and don’t price gouge people you will stay busy regardless, I have this channel linked on my companies website that’s how not worried I am about these videos taking work from me.
Why did you put background music in I cant hear you. Not informative
Save me $125 from plumbers
Always glad to help bro!
Learn how NOT to pop the mic...very annoying....windscreen, distance, talk at angle away from mic.
you're welcome for the free advise on how to fix your plumbing. Very annoying how many unappreciative entitled people are on youtube.
