I just followed this video's advice completely from beginning to end, including my wife and I being on our phones when I turned the main waterline back on to check for leaks, and it went 100% smoothly due to all that is shared here. Including even the trick about putting the large o-ring back on by first turning it backwards to listen for that click. THANK YOU so much!
Thanks for this! Just to add some of my experience. I had a slow drip out of my shower head. I contacted Delta and after various emails back and forth they sent me some replacement O-rings for the cartridge. This did not fix the problem. My local hardware store had replacement Delta cartridges for $52. Being cheap, I found a non Delta version on Amazon for about $34. I went with the off brand. It worked however the tolerances are pretty tight on this cartridge and I noticed it was harder to get in and out. Also note, BE CAREFUL removing this cartridge unless you plan on replacing it. It can get really tight and although there a slots to pry it out with a screw driver, it can be ruined if you get too rough with the plastic. Although the aftermarket worked, I would spend the extra 18 buck or so and go with the official Delta replacement. Don't skimp on plumbing parts!
Great video. Very clear communication with clear directions and great video to see what you were doing. Very helpful for a home improvement newbie like myself who is terrified of touching plumbing. Thank you.
An add-on for new viewers: The shower cartridge includes two outlets at the back that includes a spring covered by a rubber cap (O-spring). It may be that the entire cartridge may not need to be replaced but only the O-Springs. Its much cheaper to do so, so you will need to inspect those to see if the rubbers are worn and chipped or if the springs have lost their tension. Remove and observe the orientation of the O-spring as the larger opening of the internal spring goes into the cartridge with the smaller opening covered by the rubber cap. Once you replace those you can just follow the rest of the video to put everything back in place and test to see if everything works. Always aim to have to have all parts ready in the event that its necessary and buy local so its easier and cheaper to do so especially if its a DIY project.
Hi. I replaced the cartridges three times because water was not coming down. I had to call the guy to figure that. It turned to be sediment blocking the shower head after all the shutting off and turning on the water. I would suggest to mention that in your video. BTW I find your videos very helpful. Thank you very much for taking the time to make them! Cheers

Thank you so much for making this video! I followed your video and fixed my own shower leak. The whole thing was pretty corroded but your tip on using WD-40 worked perfectly.
thank you for making this video, it helped me out alot! PS: I stripped the allen key screw and had to drill it out, it was stuck. The big nut that holds the cartridge also didn't want to come loose so I ended up cutting it with a sawzall. I had lots of fun with this project, glad its done.
Sounds like you had some problems but you were able to fix the problem. It can be tough sometimes. Good for you for getting it done ✔️ Thanks for watching and leaving a comment
Thank you. I had a hell of a time removing the cartridge because it came apart in two halves. Nevertheless, you get a Trple A rating for your walk through illustration. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I would add silicone or PTFE (waterproof) grease to the 3 o-rings on the new cartridge. Makes inserting easier, and minimizes risk of deforming or rolling the o-ring when inserting. Furthermore, if you have to replace the cartridge again sometime, the greased cartridge will come out easier.
My Delta tub faucet is leaking and I found your video. I'm going to try to replace it myself instead of calling a plumber. You make it seem easy and the problem that I anticipate having is the calcification where the screw is & behind the handle when it gets removed. I hope I can do it successfully!! 🤞🏽🤞🏽
Agree. Mine was very easy except for the calcium. We have hard water. There are bathroom sprays that include CLR. Get some of that first. And PB Blaster to lube the threaded ring. He didn't say much about the ring, but if you take a channelock pliers and a soft towel. Grab the ring through the towel, and squeeze with moderate pressure (not gorilla). Rotate 30 degrees and repeat. All around the ring. It cracks the calcium. Then you can rotate the ring.
Thank you for the hint on the water temp adjustment, my water was hot and lava temp. The water in Phoenix is hot out of the city pipes 10 months of the year. We like cold showers here
If your brass collar is hard to loosen, spray some WD-40 on the threads & let sit for 10 minutes. If the cartridge is stuck in the valve body, use a small paintbrush & CLR (calcium, lime, rust remover product) to "paint" the inside of the valve body. My cartridge was so stuck in the body that it broke in half when I tried to pull it out.
Thank you so MUCH !!! I followed your instructions and used the WD 40 and let it sit for a while , it turned easily with the channel locks and I replaced the cartridge
You do not have to remove the set screw the whole way to remove handle which will help keep you from dropping it in drain then later while not standing over the tub take it out and grease it with a silicon lubricant so next time it will be easier to remove.
Lol good point with having 2 people. I only had one so lot of hustle up and down the stairs. Also thanks for mentioning size of the Allen wrench. I only had metric size and didn’t realize why it wasn’t fitting right

Just replaced my Delta Shower valve. I had a problem getting the retaining nut loose. I had hit it with WD-40 a few days earlier and also on the day I replaced it. I tried a strap wrench. No luck. Tried a large channel wrench. It still wouldn't budge. Decided to try something different. There was probably some hard water build up and I needed to break it free from the internal threads. I got a threaded hose clamp that fit the nut and made it as tight as possible. I gave it a tap on the adjusting nut with a hammer and it broke free right away and turned off easily! I also made my temp adjustments before replacing the valve so they matched the original key setting so I didn't have to keep removing the handle for each adjustment. Also noticed on the new Delta valves that they now a small slot on the top and bottom so it can be pried out with 2 screw drivers.
I drilled through that stubborn set screw because that scale build up makes these screws next to impossible to turn..even after WD40..and i am talking about years old townhouses...yepp drilled right through the screw with a titanium bit..sacrificed the handle ...Valve was fine as it just frees the handle off of the cartridge stem. Of course that is always my last resort in case nothing works...and yes on the last one wD40 didnt cut it.

Great vid! At around 6:20 you talk about the plastic ring that presets the water temp by limiting the swing of the handle. Can you reset that plastic ring (to allow for hotter showers) without having to remove the entire cartridge from its housing? If so, do you even have to shut off the water main?
Excellent video. However, the entire job is trivial without the calcium buildup. So some of your dinking around to clear the calcium buildup, which you did off camera, would have been VERY helpful had you included some video of that process. Also, ws40 is not nearly as good as pb blaster. And a spray CLR bathroom cleaner helps to free it up as well. We soaked the handle with allen set screw in CLR for a bit to clean it up. When our valve came out, it left a calcium ring where the two valve o-rings seat, so the new valve would not fit back in. It took cleaning out that calcium ring to get the new valve to seat. And a bit of diver's silicone lube. Also, adding some thread lube to the ring that holds the valve in will help the next time you want to replace the valve. Best is the copper stuff from the auto parts store.
You made it look so easy. I did fine until I got to the part where I take the cartridge out. I can’t seem to get it out. And should water be coming out? I did turn off the water and left a faucet on to release the pressure. I’m obviously doing something wrong.
MY UPDATE: I tried my best to get that cartridge out by pulling and moving it left, right, up and down and it barely moved. Then it clicked in my brain lol, put the handle back on and just turn to the left. lol It came right off. Hope this saves someone the frustration I went through before I figured it out.
i had to spray wd-40 inside and around the cartridge and let it sit a couple hours before i could loosen the whole thing out. Mine was super stuck in there, if that is encouraging for anyone
There was a plastic and brass knob and a small rubber O-ring that I had to remove from the front of the old water cartridge. Once those parts were removed, I was able to remove the old water cartridge easily by wiggling the cartridge in an up and down motion.
GREAT vid!! I got it done faster than you!! Well, I would have if I found the correct size Allen key/wrench. It was 1/8". Fantastic job, and I even wore my socks in the ...wet tub. What were you thinking?? You know you got over 300 k views, so that means over 600K wet socks!! 👍🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the video. I mainly knew what I was doing but your explanations really helped. This replacement went without a hitch. The last one caused a leak, had to leave the water off, and then call a plumber. Your video really helped.
Love the video. My problem is similar. Bought the exact replacement cartridge installed it still nothing. Up on testing without the cartridge in place great water pressure comes out of the hole. But when I put the cartridge in nothing comes out. Any advice would be appreciated thank you.
Note to self: Don't do this again. It took over 4 hours to remove the very old Delta cartridge (RP46074), which was restricting water flow. Twisted and pulled and yanked the cartridge while spraying vinegar and WD 40 in between tugs. Finally the front half released. Then used a vice grip to finally pull the back half of the cartridge from the housing. The old cartridge was very calcified. I purchased a cheap Amazon Chinese knockoff for about $20. After cleaning the housing, I installed the new cartridge but it would not snap into place. After trying for an hour, I remembered that an earlier commenter said that he had the same problem but went ahead and locked the cartridge in place using the collar nut. I did the same thing and sure as hell that worked. No problems so far. No leaks and much better flow. After all the headaches, I think I saved about $300 in plumbing expenses. The video was very well done and informative, but it didn't take into account a difficult, corroded cartridge that has been in place for ages.
Still working after a month with zero leaking. Also, here's a tip. Cover the set screw hole with a fitted cap or use waterproof duct tape to prevent calcium and corrosion in the future.
Hi! Great video! What's the part number of the new cartridge? Is it the "RP46074 Shower Cartridge Assembly for Delta Shower and Tub 13/14 Series Valve"? Thank you!
Just tried to take.out that handle screw with allenwrench. Wouldn't budge. Looked up your video. Used the WD40. Hope it works and I didn't break the thing trying to remove it earlier

Great job. Do you have RP46463 or RP32104 replacement videos? Thanks!
Not yet
Thanks so much! Super helpful! Got 'er done.
Happy to help
Thanks man. You made this look super easy
Happy to help!
I did it! Thanks bro
Nice job!
Thanks for the video. I mainly knew what I was doing but your explanations really helped. This replacement went without a hitch. The last one caused a leak, had to leave the water off, and then call a plumber. Your video really helped.
Happy to help! Thanks for watching
Super helpful, exactly what I needed, thanks!
You betcha! Happy to help
Thanks
No problem
Love the video. My problem is similar. Bought the exact replacement cartridge installed it still nothing. Up on testing without the cartridge in place great water pressure comes out of the hole. But when I put the cartridge in nothing comes out. Any advice would be appreciated thank you.
It sounds like a defective cartridge
Great video tutorials! Extremely well done.
Thank you so much! We really appreciate it. Thanks for watching

Thanks very much for this video! I watched it once and had no trouble with the fix at one of my apartments.

Hi what size Alllen key you used? Thanks
You are amazing , help me a lot . Where are you located?
Thank you 😊
We are located in calgary Alberta.
Good for you for persevering through. I have had plenty of valves that slide out easy and also ones that are very difficult.
Still working after a month with zero leaking. Also, here's a tip. Cover the set screw hole with a fitted cap or use waterproof duct tape to prevent calcium and corrosion in the future.
It worked! Thanks a bunch!
Awesome! Happy to help
Great video. It helped me do the job!
Glad it helped!
Thank you
You're welcome
You got it! Thanks for watching
Thanks for the tip 👍👍
No problem 👍
I replaced it now the waters just dripping out when I turn it on
I’m a big believer in plumbers grease
What is the difference between the blue grey part and this one?
No need to lubricate the cartridge before inserting it in the valve?
Is there a shut off valve that needs to be turned off before removing the cartridge?
Yes. Make sure to turn the water off to the valve. Usually you have to shut the main waterline off. And make sure to drain the water at the lowest fixture.
Wooh! Thanks for all the tips!
