What I love about this movie: It doesn't romantize bullying. It doesn't make any excuses why someone wants to bully the others. Is just the one of the best story of redemption of a bully (just like a certain character in hajime no ippo). He did a bad thing, he suffers for it, he redeem himself, and he gets help by friends and the one who he bullied.
Also shows that making bad choices has bad consequences, being a bad person can lead you into a very dark and lonely corner but also that the sweetest and most positive people can also be secretly harboring soke horrible feelings. If this film doesn't make you want to be nicer to people, you're too far beyond help.
there is a reason its just not an excuse and they dont treat it as one but to fully understand why kids do this stuff you need to understand why, when they were all reading in class the reason they started bullying her there was that Naoka was told "you sound like a child" then Shouko read worse and didnt get in trouble or insulted and even though we as adults know why this is children just see it as unfair and thats why take the scene were they try and make the class learn sign language we know Shouko wouldn't of asked for this to happen but to the kids its her fault and im not going to act high and mighty even though all of the bullying scenes make me tear up if i was a kid in that situation i know id of been just as angry id of thought "school is hard enough and now they want me to learn this? its her fault". its not an excuse but there are 100% reasons even Shoya he was then bullied for calling out the others once again a reason but not a excuse
@@SaintPhoenixx not always thats a very childish outlook, there was plenty of people in this movie that got 0 "consequences" yet bullied people and such look at Shoya's old friends they isolated him told others he was a bully when they also were and basiacally ruined his life making him almost commit suicide and what happened to Kazuki and Keisuke? nothing and thats why i love this movie its true to life no "karma" bs and in the end Shoya became a better person than them they didn't try and apologise to Shouko heck those 2 never even admitted they were also bullys but once again even though Shoya is a better person nothing happened to those 2
This movie hits too hard to home with me. I used to be a real a**hole, messed up my friendships and was alone for 4 years, friends that were fake and it hurt me. Left me attempting suicide 2 times. This movie made me extremely emotional, it hit me like a gunshot. Love this movie.
Im amazed at how much hidden/unclear information shown in the movie were you able to perfectly understand in comparisson to other reactions i've seen. Many people don't get a lot of things that happen in the story. Things characters say or do and people usually tend to overlook. Great reaction video!
2:17 is actually the start of conflict. The lazy teacher is didnt even write or do something for nishimiya so she can also catch and learn in class, its his responsibility as a teacher. And also you can see ueno is kind at first, she write her about school task for nishimiya. But the more days pass, ueno cant catch and have to give more time and focus just for nishimiya, i know its gonna be frustated, especially its his teacher responsibility not her. I also really like how you can seems something odd in this scene for the first watch, some people miss it. Keep going bro
4:22 and also here, ishida is actually interested to learn sign language. But because ueno is complaining (as a result of his growing frustration), and also because there is no one looks like interested except sahara, he didnt take the sign languange class. Its because the peer pressure, so he decided the same thing.
The moment you realize older Ueno is a plot device to vocalize the darkest inner thoughts of Shoya and Shoko. Shoya and Ueno on his bike and after she takes out Shoko's hearing aid is Shoya remembering being her bully and how he used to act, questioning being her real friend. At the park after seeing his old friend, of COURSE he has thought of how different things would have been if he never met Shoko. Shoko on the Ferris wheel, she also feels she ruins things and hates that she can only seem to apologize for doing so. And who beats up a suicidal girl for almost getting someone killed calling them selfish and worthless? She would already be doing that to herself. Ueno plays the role of her dark inner manifestation. Even for her mom. Brilliant.
That's actually a great observation and a good way to convey everything without the need of internal dialogue that's usually ignored when a book is adapted into a visual medium.
nahh this is to artsy for me and doesn't really hold weight, on the bike hes actually disgusted with Ueno thats why he tells her to get off Shoya never once considered bullying her again its not even in his mind he wondered if he was worthy to be her friend at the Ferris wheel he even tells her he hates her. if this was true is destroys the message of change Shoya doesn't have those thoughts anymore and when he remembers what he did it shows how disgusted he is. its people in different stages of growth making Ueno a plot device like that destroys so much it sounds nice in theory but it would mean nobody really changed and makes little to no sense also Ueno has a crush on Shoya but he hates himself it just doesn't add up i feel like people are just unconfutable with how awful Ueno is so they try and rationalise it but we already know why shes like that its explained. Ueno is her own character with her own thoughts and feelings taking that away and her just being a plot device for others thoughts takes away from the movie and how real to life it is also Shouko mother didn't think she was selfish or want to hit her, her reaction in the picture scene and how angry she got at Ueno shows this if Shouko's mother really wanted to do that she would be a terrible person and she isn't she understands how hard it is for her daughter no hate its just one of my favourite movies and iv thought a lot about it iv watched it over 6 times in the past 2 days alone but i do connect with the story a lot
You picked up on an amazing number of points from this movie normally people don't get on the first viewing, such as the blood on Shoya's mother's sweater after talking to Shoko's mother. Very good reaction!
@@DarkSnakeReacts actually they didn't fight at all. Shoya's mother willingly tore out her earrings herself to make up for the damage he did making Shoko bleed. It was her own choice. Which makes it more heartbreaking 😭
@@robertscott1949 it was never clearly implied anywhere. But knowing Japanese culture and how they are in a society where people tend to self blame more than pushing it away onto others, this scenario fits the characters and the story better. I can imagine the mother only knew about the ear bleeding when the parents talked, and decided that money compensation isn't enough. Plus wanting to educate her son about consequences of actions by example
I know I'm late and you prolly already know but uhhh.... judging from the comics, even IF Shoyo understood Shoko's confession, he wouldn't be able to bring himself to be in a relationship with her, at least not until he is truly free of his guilt feeling. Everytime he's with her, he's reminded of the past which the movie didn't portray. Basically tho, he did like her, from the first moment he saw her, as a kid he didn't understand his feelings any better. These two together are so cute bruh, shipped them across the globe. But to be able to face her as a lover, he HAD to right every wrong he ever did to her. But the movie is about the redemption so I can't be too sad, plus he's respectful to her, even when there doesn't seem any barrier to hold them back from being together, he places a barrier between them because he feels like he doesn't deserve her after everything he's done, so in a way him missing the cue during her confession was okay imo
31:52 In this scene, Shoko and her grandmother are shown visiting the hospital. And if you look closely, Shoko's grandmother looks sad, indicating that something is wrong with Shoko's hearing. And in this scene 32:16 Shoko lay in her room while holding her hand to her right ear. Shoko did this because she wanted to check whether she could still feel sounds or not, and after that she cried. And if we look back at when they were in elementary school, Shouya once pulled out Shoko's hearing aid in her right ear and caused her bleeds, maybe it's affected her until she grows up? And thats why she just use 1 hearing aid
I dunno why but I've been on a train of watching people reaction to this beautiful movie recently. And yours is the best so far. Your commentary and reaction got me chuckling especially when you repeated all those Japanese words xD. And you seems to catch up little details real quick and accurately compared to lots of other reactor. Like the X symbolism, that Shoko's completely deaf on one ear AND how Shoko must've felt after that talk with Ueno, props to that, you're amazing haha. Also the koi-carp bit, this actually the very first time I heard somebody points it out. And when you think about it, you're right. Yes, the koi is the only different fish but it also the most vibrant and beautiful compared to the carps. Anyway, love the reaction!
You had me cracking up lol. You brought some welcome levity to this bittersweet movie. A couple things with Japanese: The one girl's name is Kawai, and the word for cute is kawaii. The difference is the elongated "long E sound" translated from japanese as "ii." When Shoko told Ishida she liked him after wearing the ponytail she tried to say "Suki" which means "like," but Ishida misunderstood that she was saying "Tsuki" which means "the moon."
@@DarkSnakeReacts Yeah, I especially like the characters. They all have so much depth. Even for the ones that aren't "likeable" I enjoy picking up details about their motivations and perspectives.

The one at 40:45, which uses the trees to depict how isolated and lonely Ishida has become due to his guilt, and later at 1:01:14, there's a similar scene with Ishida and Ueno. In contrast to the previous scene, this time it's much more liberating, as Ishida and Ueno are on the same side of the tree!
