I wanted to point out one thing. Kawai during the chorus began to move her lips ahead of time, knowing that Nishimiya was focusing on her. So Nishimiya started singing ahead of time. Meanwhile, Kawai stopped her and, as if helping her, told her that “It’s too early to sing.” She is the type of character who wants to show her best side in any way
I think Ueno is in many respects a missunderstood character, because especially Non-Japanese people have a hard time understanding the reasons for her bullying Shoko. I mean understanding Kawaii is even for Westerners pretty easy, Kawaii is somebody that wants to perceived as pure, good and innocent while trying to hide her bad sides and conviently forgetting stuff and trying to protect her public image. To Understand Ueno one must understand two or three aspects of the situation. Firstly there is the crush she had on Ishida since early on. Basically there was an aspect of jealousy between her and Nishimiya because from one day to the other the boy she liked gave all his attention to the new girl. (Even if it was through teasing first and bullying later) The second aspect is she tried to help Nishimiya even at first. But soon realized her own performance in class suffered through it. And she noticed how Nishimiya brought quite alot of burdens to the class as a whole. Be it for the people that had to help her, that because of Nishimiya their performance in the Song contest suffered quite a lot or that there was the idea of everybody having to get extra lessons in sign language. The third aspect is that Nishimiya was painfully aware that she burdened her class and tried to always smile, be thankfull for every little nicety and to ignore every slight. But for Ueno this was annoying because she felt that there was never a real conversation to have with her. Because Nishimiya tried to hide her feelings to please others and this annoyed Ueno endlessly because she is one that is pretty honest with other people. It might sound strange but what Ueno wanted from Nishimiya is basically to be told " Could you please stop you selfish bitch?". That's why Ueno was so enraged with Nishimiya that she hid her in the ferris wheel. Nishimiya telling her "I don't hate you" couldn't be anything other than a lie after everything what happened. There was no real basis for a real honest conversation in Uenos mind. Btw. this of course doesn't make her bullying okay. Ueno is a real bitch to other people and a bully.... and she knows it. But she isn't pure evil either. The true shit face in the story is the teacher that was aware of all this shit and was doing nothing about it. He was the one that picked Ishida as the scapegoat for everybody and after that the business was finished for him. No remorse, no reflection. Just two children he didn't cared to help in the tiniest way which would develop suicidal thoughts in their life.
This movie is incredible. It also made me think that this must be the best time to be deaf in the history of the world. Obviously, being deaf is horrible, but at least you can text now, so that has to be a serious improvement over the communication difficulties deaf people faced in the past.
Damn! One of the more mature reactions and discussions to this movie. So much empathy conveyed from what you guys took from it and expressed your thoughts. Alot of reactions I've seen, just hate on the characters without thinking deeper into it. Whether it was Ishida as a child, Ueno or Kawaii.. people just straight up hate without recognizing the more nuanced problems this story was trying to communicate. Everyone has their own battles. Some will change, others will not. The kids in elementary weren't the only ones at fault. The apathy of the teacher allowed it to happen. In fact he even participated in it. Which is sadly more common in the Japanese society than we want to accept. Very eye opening experience. Solid movie. Equally fantastic manga. Excellent reactions.
I BAWLED on my first time watching A Silent Voice and I cry everytime I rewatch it. Something interesting I saw about A Silent Voice is that "The silent voice wasn't Shouko, it was Shoya"
The translations are a bit wrong at the end. In the dream just before Nishimiya runs to the bridge, Ishida is saying "I think I'm going to die" (and not that he was thinking of killing himself). He is saying goodbye in their shared dream. Then she cries at the bridge, and Ishida hears/sees her crying through the koi fish (koi karps have a connection to the spirit world in Japanese folklore). If Nishimiya hadn't gone to the bridge and cried there (where the koi fish was), Ishida would have died. He wakes up and goes to the bridge because he knows she is there. Then, when they talk at the bridge, he says "I want you to help ME live" (and not "I want to help YOU live" which is the exact opposite of what he said). So there are some mistranslations.
It a story about learning to love yourself. We are our own worst critic. He thought he was a monster and she thought she only made everything worse for people. hurts so much/
"Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." - Albert Einstein I feel like this quote relates to everyone in the movie, like how if you tell them to not move on they will think they can’t but they had all this potential and so much more ahead of them that’s worth living for.
People that went through bullying more times than not carry the pain for life. It's really hard to get over it because most of the time you will think there's something wrong with you that makes people don't like you. Nishimiya was suicidal since little and she attempted multiple times. She thinks she is the problem. I recently was bullied at my workplace it destroyed me. Mind you, I was bullied by people who used to be close to me for years. I trusted them and has sacrificed so much for them only to be trampled over. It hurts so much that I quit my job 2 months ago and move back into my parents home a few states away. I can't help but to think am I so unlikeable that made them that way? I'm still dealing with it, had several mental breakdowns until now. I'm 35 btw, when you think at this age stuff like this won't be happening to you or if it did you can power through it, I was so wrong about that.

many hates ueno but she is really sad til the end. she loves ishida that's why she become bully too to get in his attention. and people always told ueno to F off from nishiyama, but of course can't because she want to be close with ishida. on ferris wheel she even tried to propose a 'hate' relationship. until the end, ueno still need to bury her feeling and even learn to sign just to fit in.
in terms of animated movie. its this and your name that were the top movies everyone was watching and talking about. u know kinda like how ppl felt about a studio Ghibli Miyazaki movie back in the day...when Spirited away was out and shit.

in the end i forgave all the characters but not her, I hated her till the end man

this is one of my favorite movies too. every character in this movie is flawed in a way that just feels so real and it hits that much deeper for it.

I think the most of hated character is kawai
38:42 I think Shoko blames herself at that part because later on she says "I want to fix what I destroyed" which were Ishida's friendships

Favourite movie for a reason, a personal one. But glad more channels are reacting to it. Great reaction overall
Just incase: つき or tsuki means Moon, and すき or suki means Love, so they sound really simmilar.
I prefer another translation "I want you to help me live." He says so in Japanese.
Great reaction! I would also love to see your reaction to the 'Rose of the Versailles' series, especially with the upcoming movie release!

I heard that most of the animators who made this died in an arson fire after this was finished. I think it was over 20 people.
