This is actually one of the most helpful talks about the deadlift for anyone to watch. Some of the more popular UA-cam personalities seem to be jumping on the bandwagon and relaying the same generic information. Ben Pollack is also has a great tone to his delivery. He is just talking about what works for him. It is almost wrong that he is giving out some of the information that has made him a record holder. I am really glad he incorporates both the sumo and conventional, and also explains his reasoning for using both. Great video.
I actually tried this lat activation today and it was a major help. I felt zero tension in my lower back on my traditional deadlift. Great information.
Agreed! And the Max Aita video on squats is equally as good. His questions of leaning forward TOTALLY works and I've never seen or heard to do that on any other video I've seen.
Loved his comments about patience off the floor. I've always had that mentality about deadlifting, but everyone, EVERYWHERE, says "speed off the floor, speed off the floor, most important, blah blah".
Watch arm wrestlers such as Devon Larat if you want to improve grip strength. Not sure if it’s very specific, but I would assume those forearm workouts would help with grip in the deadlift.
Trap bar deadlifts are really good for training the grip because you can overload it a little bit more and just hold at the top like you were talking about. Heavy rack pulls would work for the same reason Also farmers carry works great, I like to start short and heavy and then do a lighter longer carry
That thumb cue was perfect. I don't use a hook grip but I thought it about while pulling this morning and that slight wrist adjustment to put my thumb more under the bar made a big difference for a smoother and more comfortable pull. Thanks guys.
Seriously, this guy is the most polite sounding Wolverine I've ever seen. Dead Lifts were one of Huge Jackman's favorite lifts while he trained for wolverine the whole 14 years he played the character. Well said bub. I subscribed because of this video.
Thank you! Very helpful. That hand strength issue is a biggie. For me, working forearms and fingers is vital, too. Weaknesses in all three areas can hold me back.
First off, this video is amazing. Thank you! 2nd: Hard to think that as an total amateur I could offer any advice, but if you need grip; axle bars or inverse movements with heavy kettlebells a la Pavel's hard style lock system (Strongfirst). Those have helped me immensely with my grip. Just my humble .02!
Chad, great video as always. Thanks for that. I'm in the process of incorporating sumo into my repertoire as well. In the video, Ben seems to start with his feet farther away from the bar than what I've seen by others teaching the sumo. Is this the effect of camera angle? If not, can you shed some insight on how far one should start from the bar when performing a sumo dl?
I just try to use my bodyweight to lever the bar off the ground when pulling myself into position, once I feel the sweet spot where the bar is about to break the floor I then use that built up tension to start the pull
Great video. That information on hook grip waa great too. Never thought about how if my wrist bends I'll lose the bar like he talked about (which I've always wondered why it happens)
Great information and instructions. Not trying to be rude or picky but Ben might think about recording hisself a few times before getting on camera. He says uhm so much that it starts distracting from the lesson. But other than that, freaking awesome
even if his proportions due to muscular development may distort how I estimate the length of his limbs i think he has beastly long arms compared to his leg length; my back angle is nowhere near his back angle when gripping the bar for a deadlift
My left hand keeps giving out. Even when I do the different grip. Not sure how to improve it. I've been doing farmers walks etc. As soon as I get about 375. I usually do 3-8 reps. And my hand just won't make it. Any advice?
Well. The double overhand is where you start. Eventually your grip will not be strong enough to hold the weight. At that point you end up with a mixed grip. One hand prone and the other in a supinated position. Be careful with the supine hand. It's a natural habit to try to curl the bar with that hand. It's a good way to get a bicep injury.
Chad, do you and Ben recommend using straps during training blocks if my hands continuously get ripped open? I haven't had any issues with grip strength but my hands continue to rip open during training and are always tore up meet time.
Warm up reps + 400-500 pounds in the same sentence. Love it. Great video, great information, I'm happy I found a unique and informative source of information that's not like everyone else's. Great info on grips too, something you don't think about really, but it is all part of the motion.
Okay I have some advice for the lifter here.. buy a 23 kg stiff bar with more thickness than what you're currently using. Don't use straps or hook grip when training, it will definitely improve your grip strength..
Does Pollack find hook grip gives him a greater increase in grip strength than mixed? Or does he just not like mixed? I've found hook and mixed both increase grip, but mixed has always been a greater increase.
there's no evidence that Ben isn't Wolverine
ахахаххахаха
He looks more like sabertooth to me (his brother)
Yeah. Might be him or might be Klokov...
Greatest comment eva lmao
Theres 2 negatives, that's a double negative nigga
Seeing Chad and Ben side by side after the intro made me choke on my coffee... Ben is big, but Chad is HUGE.
Lalande93 Chad is as big as a bear. Lol
I thought the exact same thing....god chad is huge.
Fucking shit, yes man thought the same :D:D
I'm 160lbs, 5'10... fml.

Hook grip advice at 12:40
Thanks
thanks
You have a bodybuilder physique with a powerlifter strength! Amazing...
0:15 Damn, Ben must be big.
0:16 Shit, Chad.
Ben Pollack is such a pleasure to listen to
I've just started try to use hook grip. There's a surprising amount of detail to get right with it apparently. This explanation is pretty terrific.
One of the best videos on Deadlifts. Simply amazing and very helpful. Thanks a lot.

The term you were looking for when discussing hook grip is Ulnar deviation at the wrist.

Awesome tips. Looking forward to ripping more iron off the floor tomorrow

Tips from Ben:
1. Have long arms
2. Be short
3. Compete untested
i thought he was like 6 foot 3
He's more like 5´3
I have long arms but im 6'3
Shit.
Praying JTS hits up Clarence for a visit while Harry Squatter himself is state-side. I'd be all about that collab.
Matt Fraser's beard He's back in Ireland now
Pepe The Frog The frog is right
Who's Clarence?
Clarence Kennedy search him on youtube. unreal weightlifter with the biggest cult following on internet haha
ok. did he win any competitions (weightlifting or powerlifting)? if not, why is he not competing?
One tip for hook grip, hang from a thicker pull-up bar/ pull-up bar with a hook grip.
This is a very detailed and informative video. Thanks guys
A1 vid with A1 lifters! Great job JTS and thanks for the awesome content as usual.
8:30 is where the geniusly insane stuff begins, marking for my own future reference.

this guy is the real deal. would like to train with him. would learn a ton
Creating fake profile so I can like again
You can just tell how immensely knowledgable Ben is about his deadlift, super refreshing watch. Some really novel stuff mentioned here cue wise.
Ulnar deviation is the term you were looking for your thumb when setting your hook grip
Holy shit the lighting in this video is cinemagraphic
This guy is so well spoken
Ben Pollack looks like Johnny Candito's big brother.

Such a great video on deadlift coaching.

One of the best tips I've heard so far.

Great Grip Exercise: BB holds (30 seconds) with one hand
Great video
Re Grip exercises I saw Ed Coan holding one handed the center of a Olympic bar with 135lbs on it and holding it for 30 seconds
How about mixed grips? Mixed grips can lift heavy for me
Awesome video definitely I will be trying the techniques nest time I squad!💪

Must I use the waist belt while doing heavy deadlift?
Great information and instructions. Not trying to be rude or picky but Ben might think about recording hisself a few times before getting on camera. He says uhm so much that it starts distracting from the lesson. But other than that, freaking awesome
What if I pull sumo and hit my inner knees when lowering the bar?
It would be happen when the weight is up to 75%RM .
I can never get in position properly on sumo :(
This is very good content where he just informally talks and walks us through his processes.
didn't you guys just say the ooposite, re: sumo in training?
Yeh my conventional is ass but I def value it and constantly use it as an accessory for sumo
Can you sumo more than regular? Does sumo have an advantage?
Snort some creatine every time Ben says "um" haha. Good information Ben thank you
Guys a champ for a reason, has mad knowledge
even if his proportions due to muscular development may distort how I estimate the length of his limbs i think he has beastly long arms compared to his leg length; my back angle is nowhere near his back angle when gripping the bar for a deadlift
This made me wanna do my next vid about the sumo deadlift
How to know if u should pull sumo or conventional
My left hand keeps giving out. Even when I do the different grip. Not sure how to improve it. I've been doing farmers walks etc. As soon as I get about 375. I usually do 3-8 reps. And my hand just won't make it. Any advice?
I got small hands...so hook grip for me is almost impossible to do...what type of grip do you recommend for me then?
How do you avoid the feeling of being cramped when doing sumo
Yeah but what's his ped stack atm?

Okay I have some advice for the lifter here.. buy a 23 kg stiff bar with more thickness than what you're currently using. Don't use straps or hook grip when training, it will definitely improve your grip strength..
Quads for days
Does Pollack find hook grip gives him a greater increase in grip strength than mixed? Or does he just not like mixed? I've found hook and mixed both increase grip, but mixed has always been a greater increase.
Nate he had a torn bicep a while back so he does hook grip now
Nate hook grip will strengthen your grip though it's a awesome to change things up but also it's very hard to get use to at first
Good vid!
Ben is a beast
How come you weight 181 and look massive?
Wat iz bezt shupllemant? Tren or wheyz?
Take a shot everytime he says "humm". You'll be drunk by the end of his first sentence.
Try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grip training
Chris Duffin said the same on being patient on the bar before lifting.
I recommande the last video of Jeff Cavaliere from Athleanx on forearm workout.
