8bit console none the less. It was technically 8bit with a 16bit video card. I'm shocked the code is as full fledge as it is. The only two things I would really give the SNES on is audio and parallax scrolling, and both those are honestly negligible at best.

@@lorenmorgan1931 But the PCE had a 7.16 MHz 8-bit CPU paired with two separate 16-bit graphics processors, right? 🤔
Not to mention, a separate 3.58 MHz sound chip as well.
Pretty close (but not quite there) to CPS-1 standards.
That was pretty adequate for a home console system back then for its time.

@@OtomoTenzi This is very true. It was a technical powerhouse for the time. Even as a kid I could never understand why it didnt take off. But in Southern Illinois where I was from, the TG-16 had zero presence in the rental market, and KayBee Toys was the only place that even carried them for sale. I cant remember Walmart or even K-Mart here in the US carrying them. Guessing Nintendo paid to bully all of them out of hte market, including bullying a lot of big name software houses to not make games for it.

The PC Engine held its own with this port. Sure -- there 'are' faults with it too (in various areas, just like every other 4th Gen port of the game) ... but the HuCard storage medium didn't do the conversion team any favors.
They (meaning NEC and/or Capcom) chose to put "Fighting Street" on CD, but didn't opt for an SF II Super CD-Rom edition. In the end, that might've been a simple business decision, but the PCE port still managed to be worth playing.

I remember back in the day when it was discussed that the PCE/TG16 couldn't make that game because it didn't have the capacity. They even said that Hu628 was identical to NES, the audio was another thing they said was identical to NES which only had one more channel and did not have enough audio. Well, it seems to me that PCE excelled with this 8-bit port ;).

Love that the line scrolling is in! That is a major thing that some ports got wrong. Gives the foreground some depth. The PC Engine is missing a bit of true parallax due to its single background. I be they could have used some sprite tricks and more line/raster effects to get just a touch more out of the backgrounds, but it's still very impressive.

      @sloppynyuszi 5 місяців тому

I had a PC Engine when this came out, and I think you asking for too much. As is it’s doing so much more than any other pc engine game. I had a PC Engine GT so I only played it in hand held mode (since then played it emulated), and in 1995 all the other positives trumped the 2 button limitation 😂.
Most the parallax tricks were compensated by either a linear camera move, small sprites or basic details. I had this game on mega drive as well, and honestly the little black bits on the end of the bars and the intro animation missing stuck out to me more than the background. Gameplay was so smooth, and fun. Even if I had to use the start button to swap from punch to kick.

@@TexasHollowEarth Definitely a good one! There are quite a few that push the limits quite a bit on HuCard. I think they could have done a bit more with clever use of raster fx. I know they probably used quite a few resources doing the line scrolling though. I do think it supports more sprites than what they used in some of the locations though. If we start talking about PCECD, then look to Gate and Lords of Tunder for some pretty nice examples. I know that system adds some ram though.

The SNES has several layers of parallax going on which pulls it closer to the original.
The PC Engine is missing the parallax and one of the special stages, but it holds its own.
The voice samples seem crisper and clearer on the PC Engine, whereas the SNES samples seemed more muffled (both are better than the scratchy Genesis samples).
Music wise it is very close between the two.
Gameplay I would lean towards the PC Engine solely on the button layout which is closer to the arcade original.

Basically, you really couldn't go wrong with either one. It's one of those things where the differences are there, but so negligible, you'll rarely notice unless you're actively focused on finding them. Really, the biggest out and out differences aren't even the games, but the controllers. Only the Super comes with a default six button pad, even if the shoulder buttons aren't ideal for SFII. You had to shell out extra for PCE and Sega.

    2. Interesting. Like the previous video PC Engine vs Genesis pre round directional anticipation happens. Holding back on the d-pad to make distance than following up with either Hadoken or Shoruken.

music sounds better on SNES, sound effects and voices sound a bit clearer n the PCE. Colors are similar and a matter of preference in which shading you like better. Where SNES really wins is it has way more options in being able to play CE and Turbo versions where PCE is straight up CE. Also SNES has a layer of parallex the PCE doesn't have, not noticeable in most levels, buts its there.

  • @alexanderseton

The differences are almost non existent. The color palette is a bit more saturated on PCE. The toned down setting on the SNES facilitates seeing dark background details like on Ryu’s or the Boxer guy’s stages. The field of view is a bit wider on PCE than on SNES, but the screen resolution seems a bit shorter vertically. This makes for larger sprites on SNES. Frame rate seems the same. Also, the music and sound effects are well done and hardly different in both versions.
The SNES port has the turbo mode and the champions edition, adding some extra contents.
I would choose the SNES version because, to be frank, I never met anyone owning a PCE

The image has more colour pop than the SNES version and the voice samples sound more crisp, but suffice to say the SNES version beats it in literally every other aspect.
The SNES version will always be my favourite version of the game and it's mainly because of the customised music, for some reason I preferred it over the arcade, still to this day.
It really felt like a home port that had a Super Nintendo uniqueness to it.

    • @videogamesandfilm6821
      @videogamesandfilm6821 Місяць тому

It's not actually champion edition. it's champion edition because of the colour scheme, but it's essentially turbo at champion edition speed, without the extra moves turbo offered.
For example, Bison's Psycho Crusher contacts 5 times on block in CE but in Turbo only 3, in arcade versions. CE on SNES and MD, Psycho crusher only connects 3 times on block as it does in Turbo.
So to cut a long story short, CE on MD and SNES contain all the hit box properties and game nuances of turbo, instead of CE. all that makes it like CE is the colours and speed of CE and the lack on the Extra moves Turbo made available, like Chuns fireball.
Even the PCE port is turbo, as Balrogs rush punches connect on crouching opponent. In champion edition they do not connect with crouching opponent.

@@fthprodphoto-video5357 OK, why don't I rephrase it like this:
That's not the default 2-button PC Engine controller on the left, and you could go buy the C&L Champion Joystick for SNES if it's about buying extra controllers to have the best possible SFII control experience on any of these 16-bit era consoles (you'd literally have to buy additional controllers just to play the game properly in PC Engine's case). The colours are duller in this footage than if you type in Street Fighter II Turbo SNES on UA-cam and go check out pretty much any other footage of it for yourself (weird, right). And the SNES audio is similarly much better in most of those other videos too (isn't that strange).
There you go. Now it's just me pointing out some interesting/curious observations and details regarding this comparison video as well as responding to your original comment too, so you can consider them for what they are and as you see fit.

These are the Japanese versions, where the boxer is called M Bison, the claw fighter is called Balrog and the dictator is called Vega. They rotated these names for worldwide release, but the Japanese versions stayed as they were. To avoid confusion they are often referred to as boxer, claw and dictator.
Arguably they messed up in the sense that the M Bison = Mike Tyson joke wasn't worth the trouble, but that's not a bug in these ports.
