Overall a decent Ken run on the hardest difficulty. Guile fight was quite average. The run could be improved by about 10-20 seconds, but I didn't want to spend more time on it. I will do the run again if anybody beats this time. My goal was to get a sub 8 time.
I'm using the Qanba Obsidian fightstick.
*Q: Why is the game running so fast?*
A: This is how it runs on MAME and only MAME is accepted on speedrun.com
*Q: Why are some names different? M.Bison is Vega, etc... ? Why am I speedrunning the Japanese version?*
A: This is the original Japanese version and these are the original names the game was designed with. Detailed explanation available on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M._Bison - check the paragraph "Conception and development".
A: The cutscene between fights happens faster on the Japanese version and the speedruns can be 15-20 seconds faster than the US version.
I also have the official WORLD RECORD with RYU on HARDEST difficulty (8m25s) - ua-cam.com/video/A-aAJX-36Yc/v-deo.html

The punch sound effect from this game never gets old.
It sounds so raw. Besides the sound of a fierce or a fireball hitting someone, this is also my favorite "shoryuken" sound; like they're stressing their throat.

In the Japanese games, the boxer was M Bison, the Spanish guy was Balrog and the final boss was Vega. For western markets, there was an issue with ‘M Bison’ and Mike Tyson. So they swapped the names around a bit.
He was already in Street Fighter for Mike (the boxer). (Heavyweight boxer Mike spent some time in prison)
Yeah, the original names feels weird to me. Kinda glad they switched them lol
Thanks, I thought I’d misremember my childhood!
worlwide its claw , boxer , dictator
Western names were originals, because they stayed like that in next sequels 😅
I remember about 30 years ago, spending about 2 months daily playing Street Fighter 2 Turbo on the SNES to beat the game on the hardest difficulty with Ryu without losing a round - all it said at the end was “You have Mastered Ryu!” For you to do this so effortlessly, it seemed, is truly amazing! 🙏🏾
I know what you mean, I've been there as well. We all gotta start somewhere. It gets easier and easier the more you play and I just played A LOT.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
About 30 years ago I completed SF2: the world warrior on SNES with Chun Li on the hardest setting. Was SO proud lol, it wasn't easy. Didn't know any combos or anything like that either. And had a massive crush on her 'cause I was young but well, I kinda still do lol (I play SFV and main Sakura ATM, loved her fighting style since the Alpha games, most fun of all the shotos, she's super enthusiastic and cool)
@@deviouxFGChey you should do speed runs with all the fighters. If you do I’m new to you and do t know.
Same kind of thing for me. 4 months seeing if i could finish it without losing a single round while playing casually.
@@Stank-b8w I don't have the time do that, unfortunately. I really like Chun Li, Zangief, Guile, Vega, Sagat and Bison but I'm average with them and I prefer to do rather high-level speedruns using the characters I'm good with (Ken/Ryu).
8:07 - Ken even speed run his marriage! 🤣 🤣 🤣
So therapeutic to watch someone absolutely SMOKE the cheating the computer the way it used to screw so many of us back in the day. It's like being Loki watching the Hulk rag-doll Thor into the floor. Almost gets me shouting "THAT'S HOW IT FEELS!!"
Oh yeah, we've all been on the receiving end of the cheat machine, many times. It always feels good to dish out some payback ;) Thanks for watching and commenting!
I couldn't agree more, this cheating bastard game is getting what it deserves.
😂😂😂😂 agreed
I dont think this game cheats, you just need to change styles between rounds. You cant bring the same fight to the next round, which certainly makes the game better.
@@emptiester There are at least 3 obvious ways the game "cheats":
1. It will do charge moves without charging. For example, Guile can walk forward and do Flash Kick instantly without charging. So, charge time is needed only for human players, not for the CPU.
2. It is not affected by proximity block, so it can walk backwards out of range from your attacks without automatically having "block" triggered. This does not apply to human players. You will automatically block if you are close to your opponent and try to walk back when they press a button.
3. It will do input reading and react to buttons you press on the first frame you press them. How many times did you press a button and you didn't even see it come out on the screen, yet you got countered?!
In my opinion, these are a "necessary evil", so to say, because if the game would not "cheat", then humans would find a way to win very consistently, which means the arcade machines would not have generated nearly as much money as they did by "cheating".
What you said is also true, you do mostly have to change your style between rounds, but the game does have many moments when it "cheats".
July 6th 1995 I attempted this with Sagat.. After 92 losses to M. Bison I had him down to a sliver of heath in the 3rd round and he hadn't landed a hit.. Two head stomps and a few psycho crushers followed by a throw led to my TV somehow getting cracked by a drinking glass that miraculously flew from my hands..
Oh I know that feeling. Many times I wanted to smack the arcade machine and the only thing holding me back was knowing I'd get permabanned if I did ;)
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Sai-kyou-crrruSshhh-ahhh
Maybe if you hadn't been playing with a drink in your hand you'd have done better...
The arcade I played at used to rig the game by somehow having access to a setting that didn't show the opponent's health. You could defeat the opponent but you never knew how much health it had.

Great run well done on the WR! The jump in strong punch, standing strong, strong dp combo is a killer
It's a very good combo, indeed, one of the best in the entire game. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I do like the 'jump in strong punch, standing strong, light dragon punch (looks better and doesn't leave you hanging) or jump in strong punch, medium crouched kick into light dragon punch. (Medium knee into light dragon is a good look too)

I practiced this run quite a bit. I did around 1k attempts to get it. The more you do it, the better your timings get. Thanks for the kind words. It's good to see once in a while someone who actually understands what's going on.
In South Africa, we used to think that Ken/Ryu said "Allyouget," "Atooget" and "Hutkutfooget" for "Shoryuken," "Hadouken* and "Tatsumaki Senpou Kyakku" respectively 🤭
Trust me my friend in every country we think that when back in time. As french i used to think that with the same writting 🤣

Some 30 years ago at a friend's house (who had a snes), we pulled an all-nighter to beat the game in the hardest difficulty. You did it much faster than me. Congrats!
Yea, I remember the struggles, good times tho, good times. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Imagine walking into the arcade and watching this guy finish SF2 in 7 mins all on a single 60c credit.
That would have been a very rare sight back in the day. We would try to maximize the gameplay time of every coin as much as possible :)
Thanks for watching and commenting!
And the arcade game downright cheats. Blanka laid one finger on him and it cost him 1/3 of his like bar.
@@OliveiraX Oh the CPU is legit programmed to cheat. And in a way it kind of makes sense. If it wouldn't cheat, then people would quickly figure out ways to beat it consistently, which means the arcade places would lose lots of money. You can still beat it consistently, but not if you're an average player, you'll need to put in a lot of quarters to get there ;)
60 cents? I remember when this was a quarter or 2 nickels at the nickel arcade
Just learned I could throw in an extra punch in the jump punch/shoryuken combo...
I learned it could be done very late (after 1 year of playing sf2 turbo) and it completely changed my experience with the game. Never played any other character than ken after that.
Note that I found the timing very tight and often did the simpler version with just crouching HP DP without the jump in
I don't really know how difficult it is because I don't play the game. I also don't know why UA-cam recommend this. But here I comment to help the algorithm. Nice run btw

It can't in a real arcade machine
What a lot of people don't know, in the original Japanese version the boxer Balrog was called M.Bison, he was a Mike Tyson rip off, but due to legal reason they had to change the names around for the US version.

So satisfying on Balrog
Because I noticed almost everyone choosing Ken or Ryu...I made it a point to defeat the game at the arcade using E. Honda, Vega, Blanka and Guile. There are two kind of gamers in the world: the ones that have beaten Sagat and the others.
Brings back so many memories!
ShoRyuKen’s always been OP. Spent my childhood playing this game, mostly PvP as PvE becomes annoying when you get good. This brought back old memories 🥲 By the way, in my country, Balrog was the boxer, Vega the spanish guy and Bison the final boss
Me too, mostly PvP, a lot. There was no time back in the day to play versus the machine, there were always kids waiting in line to play 1v1. In the last year of life before the arcade closed it was empty almost always, so I was doing all-perfect runs versus the machine on Champion Edition.
We also had the versions where Balrog was the boxer, etc, but for speedruns I prefer the Japanese version, mostly because the screen between fights is faster, so you can save some time there and on Champion Edition the damage is bigger on the Japanese version.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Duuuude those combos absolutely smokin , impressive playing !
Thanks for watching and commenting!
That guy in Balrog's stage!
Nice to see the triple fierce 2 in one combos I was legendary for in the UK scene nearly 30 years ago :D. There's a faster way to complete the game with Guile as his double sonic boom combo is a redizzy, it requires mad timing though.
Good times, good times. Hitting the triple combo always felt special. I'm pretty bad with Guile. I can play him cheesy in 1v1, but not fast vs the CPU :) Not sure if it would be faster than Ken though. Ken just destroys everybody.

Watching your Ken is like watching the computer Ken when it gets really pissed off.
Fighting games are such a cool thing to speedrun, it's never the same thing and really focused on not only the player's APM but their legit reflexes and reactive thinking.
"it's never the same thing"
That's not true, seeing as you can bait the exact same reactions out of the A.I. each time, especially for the purposes of a speedrun.
@@GenMaster You can employ the same strategy but unless you are frame-by-frame perfect, the AI is going to react slightly differently and the match won't proceed precisely the same way (unless you have a strategy where the enemy literally never has a chance to do ANYTHING). This is in contrast to other games where enemy reactions are often unimportant, whereas in fighting games it's literally the whole game
@@CursedLemon It's rather easy to do in this game.

Who’d you consider the toughest AI opponent where most could possibly go wrong?
It might look that way because I've probably done around a thousand attempts to get this run :) Eventually, you kind of get to know what's going to happen in most fights.
The toughest and most volatile AI would be Honda and Blanka. That's why I prefer to have them first. When they're first, sometimes they have patterns which are easier to deal with.

My mate used to reset if he got hit once, even a blocked hit. He refused to play without perfect run everytime.
If we played 2p he let me pick his character and handicapped at opposite ends and he still whooped me.
Obviously practice comes in to it but some people just have hit. My mate spent not an awful lot longer than me practicing but he just wiped me out. Even if I put him on Zangeif, he would rip me out of any move I did straight in to a power bomb. It's just mad how good some people are at this game.
More a Garou man myself though.
Is such a performance only possible using an arcade gamepad? Or is it possible to get at least close to it using a SNES or X-box-type gamepad?
It is possible with any kind of controller, especially gamepad, any kind of gamepad. It is possible even with a keyboard. You just have to be able to execute moves and combos correctly. Playing A LOT is what is most important, not the controller. Choose whatever controller you like and whatever controller you can execute moves and combos with.
I have at least 20k hours on SF2 and I prefer arcade stick, but if you play 20k hours on keyboard, you will be very good on keyboard and if you play 20k hours on gamepad, you will be very good on gamepad. You can be very good even with 2-3k hours, every person is different, some people learn faster than others, some people are more talented than others, but the key to success is playing A LOT, with whatever controller you can execute moves and combos.

@@jakecregeen6667 Japanese boards were not available outside of Japan. I also did not know about it until I started doing these speedruns and I saw that other runs were done on the Japanese version. I played on the US version growing up, it's the one I'm used to the most.
Long story short, the American versions messed up three character's names and unfortunately they stuck.
wasn't it also about the controversies about the real life Mike Tyson coming into play here (i might be wrong on that) and so they fixed it by swapping names as a quick and dirty fix?
Anyhow, obviously the initial japanese names fit much better even though it is against our collective "muscle memory" if you can call it that.
I was waiting for "Vega" to spam scissor kicks like he always did to me back in the day, but it never happened. Why didn't Japanese players get put through the same BS we did in America? Great run.
