I love shooting my 460 mag but I think my wife loves it more. My 13 year old daughter has worked up from running 45LC through it to the 454 Casulls. She's not quite ready for the big 460 mag rounds yet. Recently started reloading as the girls run a boat load of ammo through this thing. Shooting at an indoor range is a blast. You are literally the loudest gun on the range and people stop what they are doing. Shooters to your sides will stop as they are scared of the gap blast the big boy puts out. I'll let people shoot it, most turn down the offer, others will fire one round, put it back on the bench and walk away with a big grin.
Yeah I thought this would be the case when I shot at buds. Another guy had an AR that I think was chambered in .308 and I wasn’t as loud as him. I had the RJM .454 What can you do? Rifles are always gonna be able to shoot bigger rounds.

And the folks with him testify that he was holding the revolver properly with no clowning around. All of a sudden, that .460 XVR with its versatility is looking pretty good to a lot of people around here, me included. Thanks for the tutorial, Hickock.

I know the video is over 2 years old BUT seeing it for the first time was very educational and entertaining. Mr. Hickok you have a great demeanor and sincerity towards life and it really commands the attention of your viewers like myself. When I'm stressed from life's daily perils sometimes I plug in one of your videos and just WATCH and LISTEN. In about 2 minutes, I'm back to normal again. I would also like to give props to JOHN. John does great camera work and seems to know what your going to do before you do it. You and your Dad make a great team and all of us are the beneficiaries. You will treasure this time with him for the rest of your life. It will mean everything to you. I know, I lost my dad in 2012. Keep up the good work and stay in the fight. I have to admit that I really enjoyed shooting a .500 S&W, and thought it was just about the perfect hand-cannon. Then I got to see the .460 and changed my mind. It immediately became my favorite. The power is mind-blowing, but its ability to shoot five different bullets made the change of favorites easy. What a magnificent beast it is!
I own both the .460 and .500 Magnums. Both revolvers are 8 3/8" and identical except for the chambering. After shooting and hunting with both if I could only have one hands down it would be the .460 Magnum. The versatility with being able to fire different ammo is impressive. The .460 also has gain twist rifling which helps with accuracy. There is nothing the .460 cannot kill vs. the .500 Magnum. Owning a revolver that can fire a 300+ grain bullets at .30 caliber rifle ballistics is impressive. If you are in the market for a hunting handgun I would highly recommend the .460 Magnum. I added a Leupold handgun scope along with four Weigand scope mounts. Rock solid shot after shot. The Smith & Wesson front carry holster is also a nice touch.
That gun seems that it would be all around more versatile than the 500, it gives you a lot more choice depending on what you wanted to use it for! The 500 is going to be a one choice firearm
I own the S&W 500 and the owners manual says you are supposed to use the muzzle break/compensator with the vents on top for jacketed rounds. And use the muzzle break with no ports on top for lead rounds. Supposedly the lead rounds could produce some shrapnel out the top ports.
Having shot this gun with both 454 and 460, I personally did not find the recoil that bad with the muzzle brake. The noise, on the other hand, is truly cacophonous.
This would be phenomenal for bear defense. I like the fact you can load a variety of ammunition using the long colt for target practice and possibly home defense. Use the Casul rounds for whitetails and use the full house 460 rounds for bear defense and big game. I am going out west next year, I'm definitely looking into one of these.
Put some of that 460 Ford Motor oil on that S&W. Don't even mention a 454 Chevy oil on a S & W. Chevy oil might be OK on a 22 bolt action or so. Ha ha.
I did too. 454 Chevrolets and 460 Fords; now are we talking engine muscle or firearm power, precision... because either way I am ready to listen and talk shop! lol!
Why I like watching Hickok's videos..can hit exactly what and where he's aiming no matter if it's a .22 rimfire or .500 S&W Magnum. That's years of training and experience. That being said; impressed with the .460 Magnum primarily because of it's ability to use the range of cartridges as exhibited in this video. And that revolver looks like a really high quality piece. Fun video to watch.
You are such agood instructor. Your voice is clear and actually your so professional in handling Any gun you pick up to demo with. We are so fortunate having you as a guide. Many thanks.
Just watched a video the other day. Taufladermouse. Somebody in comments said you wouldn't see good ol Hickok45 doing this gun. I commented to them. Not yet but Hickok45 rocks a few videos with the .500 Magnum. Now here we are..... Hickok45 with a .460
Also wanted to add that in my opinion the 454 Casull is the best all-around cartridge for this gun for every day shooting. Still plenty powerful extremely accurate and not nearly as punishing.
I bought a 454 casual years ago because I go into bear country a lot. I would have bought the 460 had it been available at the time. I love the diversity in the ammo. The 460 has so much going for it over the .500.
Not really an accurate contrast: the S&W X-Frame twins have different purposes, and they are each "the most..." in their own lanes, speed for one and power for the other. I don't know of any other .50/0 revolver-based rounds, but the .500 isn't about versatility-of-caliber, the two are a trade-off. You wouldn't dismiss a hammer because it isn't a saw.
The brake that's on it is for jacketed projectiles, the other is for hard cast. Owned my xvr for a couple of years and had an awful lot of fun with it. Extremely accurate with the 200 grain hprnady ftx @2300fps 1980ft lbs in my pistol.
I've fired some of those last year when I got this gun, and yeah, it's definitely a mean round. my all-time favorite round is the 240-grain from Underwood Ammo, now those things are spicy as hell!!! even their 360-grain Hard Casts will bruise the palms of your hands if you aren't wearing shooting gloves.
*Many* thanks indeed for having one of these beautiful guns on your show Hickok!!! I have wanted to see you put an XVR through its paces for the last five years. I think it is the very best of all the heavy pistols--superior even to those that shoot the 500SW Magnum in my opinion and _miles_ ahead of the various Desert Eagles despite their hype. You mention how practical it is, yet also how special with the super-fast rounds and also the tamer cartridges. Just as you suggest, I would perhaps like to get my little wife--she stands an inch under five feet--interested in the lighter rounds while still being able to appreciate the really heavy stuff myself. A fantastic pistol and a really, _really_ enjoyable video.
lets hope that all the law abiding firearm owners can continue to have a great sport and introduce the shooting sports to their children and I to my children as my father did with me. Starting with basic gun safety with maybe a bb gun or a .22 . its so sad that these people with mental health issues are sending us in a direction that is against a great sport.
Very well said vwfez. That's exactly the way my dad started us out. And I agree with he mental health statement. So, I believe in 'some' regulation. Firearms should be approached from a point of stability.
@@MrBillybooth Regulation has to be forgiving and inclusive of people too though. Guns aren't a cheap hobby by any means, and the high costs of going to psychiatrists to get yourself checked out doesn't help either.
I'll tell you how accurate. Using my S&W 460 3.5" PC revolver loaded with Hornady 200gr FTX ammo from 25 yard distance, I shot two hands, standing unsupported, slow fire using (Double Action) 10 rounds into 3" diameter bullseye target!
I’m a 460 lover! It is super versatile! I think the X frames cross the line of handcannons over onto the Mancannon category! Thank you for the content. I appreciate your entertainment!
I have the Black Stainless model Performance Center Model of the .460XVR and fire it all the time! My favorite of my collection for sure. I have 2 chest holsters as you recommended. What a FANTASTIC weapon. You didn't mention the 3-6ft fire it buts out all around you. Mine also fires 2 basketball size fireballs behind the projectile when firing the Hornady Critical Defense S&W .460 Magnum rounds. When I take it to the range EVERYONE stops firing and comes over to see what is making all the incredible loud noise and fireball.
It's on my wish list. I was proud that I worked my up to a .44 mag, then this guy in the next lane showed me something I've never even heard of, the .460 !
I watched you load them wrong, and was just thinking. DUDE!, he's about to fire the hot .460 thinking it's an LC, and then you caught it. I don't know whether I am relieved, or disappointed.
jesondag Evidently you are new to his videos he jokes around a lot and sometimes its hard to tell when he is b/c he has a dry sense of humor. Trust me he knows what he's doing. Watch more of his vids and you'll see.
As with most firearms that I'm considering, I had to check your videos. I'm leaning towards the 460 instead of the 500. It'll allow me to use those very low recoil rounds for teaching my wife and kids (they've never touched a firearm). It'll also give me the option of being used as a hunting weapon.
I did get this (The hunter edition with the rail) over all other big bore handguns. I can shoot 45LC all day and not have a problem... and to be honest, I'm very used to the 460 rounds too now. I can somewhat comfortably shoot those one handed. It's unbelievable power and there isn't a bear in the woods I frequent that this gun won't stop. The 500 still scares me to actual use, but I proudly use this gun! I've alwasy sort of wondered what would happen if someone broke into my house (and of course posed a lethal threat) and I happened to have this gun on hand. A single 460 round to an intruder's head would do 2 things. It would make the head POP like the watermelon here and also it would make me 100% deaf in an instant. This is the loudest gun I've ever shot. At the range the other guns sound like air rifles compared to this.
This was the first New gun I bought. I said if I wanted a revolver, it’s this. I got the 5” barrel. And the different compensator is for lead rounds. Love bringing my friend to shoot this.
I have one with the 5" bbl. With Hornady 200 gr flex tip it is one of the most accurate hand guns I own. I love shooting that thing. Wear good ear protection if you decide to get one. The first time I used it was at an indoor range, and that monster rattled the windows on the range.
You have to try the large performance center version! Shot 5 rounds of 380 grain bear loads! The shockwave coming back at you in your face is quite the experience. well made piece of engineering is why I like these large frame smith's
I really like how you break down and educate about what you are shooting and about the bullets yall keep doing what you're doing man and God bless yall. I really want me one of those 460 xvr magnum thinking about buying me one.
Fun fact because of personal experience. The same length barrel one as you have will knock off all red dot sights you mount on it. The sheer force of the recoil shifts them back on the picatinny rail and therefore loses zero. Your best bet when wanting an optic is using high grade reinforced scope rings with a aim dot scope. (The only red dot style scope that won't lose zero from this gun). Using an actual scope with a normal reticle will actually break. The only gun I've ever seen that can do this. And this is with light normal sized hunting loads for deer. It knocked off a aimpoint acro P2, Trijicon RMR, Holoson HE510, and also a Nightforce ATACR 1-8x24. The nightforce surprised me the most not being capable of holding up to the gun. Powerful handgun is not the word for it.
I just picked mine up for independence day weekend. First gun I've ever fired, and i would say if you're a big guy looking for a gun your size this is defiantly the right choice. I'm 6'3 with a wide build so i could "comfortably" shoot it one handed, while my friend who's not quite as big as me had a bit of trouble.
Guys even bigger than you actually shoot a pocket carry revolver. 38! You need a when barrel to carry this around. It van get you killed in a gun fight😯😯😮😮😩😩
If you can stomach the $1.25+ for every shot, its worth it! I have the 14 inch model from the performance center and I dont need any other gun. I only bought it earlier this summer so I only have about 120 shots through it, but it just puts the bullet where you point it. Took it to my grandfathers range and hit both the 100 yard and 150 yard with iron sights (with the bipod that is included with the 14 inch model). Not to mention the flexibility of firing .45LC and other shorter rounds when all your friends gather for a range day but you dont want to drop $100+ for all day fun. As hickok45 said, it does gunk up the cylender when you use shorter rounds though.
Trevor Torres Are you reloading? I'm paying between $2.50 and $3.50 a shot? Have the same 14" gun. Have you ever tracked the velocity? I get around 2500 fps at the muzzel.
You are a realistic shooter. What do I mean by that? What you do is something the rest of us try to do and can with practice. You are not fake. You are trustworthy. This is the first reply I have ever done. Why ? I think you are the best shooter on UA-cam. You are honest about your shots and reviews. Thank you. My honor, Preacherred.
Dear Santa, I've been a really good boy this year and all I want is a .460 XVR S&W Mag!!!! Hickok thanks for the great vid! I got to comment though - I've never seen you switch up your grip like you did with this one. I've got a .44 629 6.5" and find myself doing the same thing - as opposed to my .357 28-2 which for some reason just "fits" my grip straight out. Keep `em comin' , always look forward to your vids :)
Theres one of these at my local sporting store, has been there for months. Ive looked at it, said holy crap thats a BEAST and walked away. Now that i know its possibilities i may have to reconsider buying it!.
I know another person who has good control of firearms as you do, others gıy turkish delta force commender, pistol and rifle, you are very gentlmen, im very liken your all videos, and very good control heavy Guns. Thank you mr. 👍
Solid review pops!! This was the first revolver I ever shot, with VERY hot rounds and the shorter barrel... it scared the hell out of me however, now I want one.
I had the 2 1/2" "Bear" survival kit. The recoil was not that bad at all and I am not a big tuff guy by any means. The concussion of the muzzle blast another story. I wore in the ear plugs and muffs any time I shot it. I always pondered if I would take on a grizzly hand to hand before shooting that thing with no ear protection.
Its versatility is reflected in this: Casull and/or hot 460 for self defense and when in a grizz country, Schofield and/or 45 long colt when plinking (not to say that these are not powerful enough for a self defense too, but they are much cheaper)...
It was over in a moment and the crowd all gathered 'round There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground Oh, he might have went on livin' but he made one fatal slip When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip, Big iron on his hip Big iron, big iron, Oh he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip, Big iron on his hip
FilterExel that's what I noticed ppl don't realize these are 45 caliber rounds all of em and the 460 makes them seem like 22 or 38 Cal depending on the grain, that is a lot of pistola SMH
I love your expertise! I have the Alaskan .454 2&1/2 barrel, .460 and the .500 mag snub. I love them all. I have to say though. The most kick I've experienced from a hand gun and hate to shoot is the S&W Performance center ultra light .44 mag! I'd love to see if you see what I do or if I'm just a whimp!
Great video!! I LOVE my 460!! The only thing I didnt hear you mention was the light trigger. the one you were shooting may not have had one but mine has an ultra sensitive trigger which is great when shooting for accuracy!! Thanks for the great video!!!
Thanks for the great videos Mr. Hickok45. I just finished a holster/scabbard for a Magnum Research BFR 460 mag with an 11" barrel and scope. The thing is huge and I would not want to carry this gun very far. He has only shot 6 rounds of the 460 and a bunch of 45LC. heavy gun for sure.
@@jerrodcarter7537 You feel bad for him? Massachusetts brother......fixed mag AR, approved roster list. It's crazy here. Before anyone says "MOVE!" I love my job and where I live but damn I miss free states, maybe someday.

Hickok45 says, "When you make a lot of mistakes, you learn how to fix 'em." I'm not suggesting any connection, I'm just enjoying the homespun wisdom and humor of different people in different times.
As a lady in AK, I love mine for bear & wolf protection in the woods/mountains. Target practice is fun with the ammo versatility and it kicks less than a .44. This revolver is hefty, dependable, and straighforward.
11:00 "I don't think I can shoot it all that well...." If that isn't humbleness defined, I don't know what is. For not being able to shoot all that well, you seem to be doing an exceptional job. What do you consider shooting "well" then? Hitting a dime at 500 yards? I wish I could shoot "not all that well".... You crack me up Uncle Hickok....
You may "not learn much" by shooting 45 Colt through this thing. But you'd certainly have a lot of fun. 45 Colt seems perfectly accurate, too. Hickok45 hitting targets with ease with 45 Colt also demonstrates that short rounds in long cylinders are not inherently inaccurate, as is so often heard.
@@jeremylakenes6859 Rossi made a m92 in .454 and the stopped importing it to USA and I'm not sure if they make it now in Brazil or stopped completely but I absolutely agree, that is the top of my wish list is to maybe luck up and find one at a pawnshop or something,I have been scouting online auctions and such for 2 years waiting for one to pop up and the circuit judge is awesome but they really need to harden the cyl for .454 pressure and it would be a major hit
I hand load and with my wife's circuit judge i was informed NOT to do Ruger loads which was highly disappointing for me but she don't mind I typically make her some lead cowboy loads, now you have me wondering..an employee had a raging judge last time we went camping if he by chance still has it I will see if that idea would work
I've hunted with my ruger super redhawk 454 71/2 barrel for years. Taken many deer with it. I do like the options with the 460, that's going to be my Christmas present this year. 🙂
I have a lot of fun shooting my .460 as well. Mine came with 2 different muzzle brakes; one for jacketed and one for un-jacketed bullets. At least swapping between the 2 only takes a few seconds, and the retaining screw is left-hand threaded. I recently fired some Buffalo Bore 26B/20 rounds weighing 360gr rated @ 1900FPS & 2860FT/LBS. They made all the other rounds feel weak. Keep up the good work. I love your range.
@Hickok45...I am one of your subscribers. I really liked (and appreciated) your review on the S&W 460 magnum! I recently bought the same one that you were using. 460 S&W used for hunting hogs in Tx have had one for several yrs. Reload my own bullets. Great powerful weapon especially when shot at night, a real flame thrower.
I didn't realize the .460 was so versatile. To me, that gives it a big edge over the 500S&W.
That's why most people find it more appealing
Also superior ballistics. 500 is a bigger caliber but .460 is a more powerful round.

“When you make a lot of mistakes you learn how to fix ‘em”
wise words
This guy is one of my favorites I enjoy any video he make ,thank you for charin your videos and experiences with us Mr Hickok.
That thing digs holes in the ground even after hitting the gong.
My favourite handgun, versatile, powerful
good thing I got the same exact one as seen in this video
The brake that's on it is for jacketed projectiles, the other is for hard cast. Owned my xvr for a couple of years and had an awful lot of fun with it. Extremely accurate with the 200 grain hprnady ftx @2300fps 1980ft lbs in my pistol.
I have the 14 inches 460. It’s amazing how Kickok 45 hit targets with those big rounds. My favorite ammo is the Hornady 460 S&W Magnum 200 gr FTX. 🤛🏼
That's my new favorite quote, "When you make a lot of mistakes you learn how to fix them"
lets hope that all the law abiding firearm owners can continue to have a great sport and introduce the shooting sports to their children and I to my children as my father did with me. Starting with basic gun safety with maybe a bb gun or a .22 . its so sad that these people with mental health issues are sending us in a direction that is against a great sport.
Dad bought my first 12 gauge Stevens mail order . That was before the anti Constitution folk came on the scene.
Very well said vwfez. That's exactly the way my dad started us out. And I agree with he mental health statement. So, I believe in 'some' regulation. Firearms should be approached from a point of stability.
OH! I clicked your pic-link..... Scarlet Begonias! ... Long live the Dead!..... **smiles**
@@carlsmith8443 my dad bought me my first 12 gauge when i was 15. It was a stevens pump. Still have it! 31yrs later
@@MrBillybooth Regulation has to be forgiving and inclusive of people too though. Guns aren't a cheap hobby by any means, and the high costs of going to psychiatrists to get yourself checked out doesn't help either.
"When you make lots of mistakes you learn how to fix them."
Wise words from gun grandpa.
5:30, “When you make a lot of mistakes you learn how to fix ‘em”
Damn that’s too deep for me
I'll tell you how accurate. Using my S&W 460 3.5" PC revolver loaded with Hornady 200gr FTX ammo from 25 yard distance, I shot two hands, standing unsupported, slow fire using (Double Action) 10 rounds into 3" diameter bullseye target!
Definitely impressive !
First time I've seen a .45 Colt have the muzzle flip of a .22!
I was thinking the same thing thought he was about to blow that cowboy target away
jesondag Evidently you are new to his videos he jokes around a lot and sometimes its hard to tell when he is b/c he has a dry sense of humor. Trust me he knows what he's doing. Watch more of his vids and you'll see.
Ha, I was thinking exactly the same thing.

As with most firearms that I'm considering, I had to check your videos. I'm leaning towards the 460 instead of the 500. It'll allow me to use those very low recoil rounds for teaching my wife and kids (they've never touched a firearm). It'll also give me the option of being used as a hunting weapon.
Who else noticed he loaded them in reverse order and was sitting there waiting for him to jump from the lightest to hottest round in just one shot? 😂
This man by far has the best / most educational reviews right down to the history on some of them
Got to love Federal ammo. Been using for decades and never one FTF on any firearm. Clean burning and accurate. Good shit man!
The variations and options of shooting EVERY .45 rimmed cartridge makes the 460S&W a GREAT CHOICE!
Wonder if you could have the cylinder cut to to use .45 acp with moon clips.
This was the first New gun I bought. I said if I wanted a revolver, it’s this. I got the 5” barrel. And the different compensator is for lead rounds. Love bringing my friend to shoot this.
I'm definitely getting the five inch version of this gun. It's a must-buy due to its caliber versatility.
"When you make a lot of mistakes, you learn how to fix 'em." Well said.
Been waiting for you to review one of these for years.
Real mans fidget spinner
Well that’s a basilong thou
@sleepy • 16 years ago ahem, chaos control.
Need to get your hands on the 460V. I'd love to see you do a review with the 5" barrel
“When you make enough mistakes you learn how to fix em”. Well said. Knowing that means you have good life experience.
might need this in my life
Mrgunsngear Channel you do bro!
A gun that has 45 colt for plinker ammo. I want it.
It’s an awesome cartridge I love mine
Trevor Torres
Are you reloading?
I own a 500 Magnum and the 460 is next on my list!
Shadowgt damn son you must have some sorr wrists
I think I'll stick with my .44 mag. If that doesn't do the job, I'm in a really bad situation anyway
Shadowgt .460 can get 2400+fps with hot loads. Rifle speed 🤔
You'll love it. I shoot the hornady xtp 2200fps and I can shoot a box of 20 and I'll be fine. And I'm a small guy.
I picked up a Performance Center 460 the other day. I haven’t shot it yet but I’m excited to add it to my collection next to the 500!
I've gotten to shoot one of these and all I can say is. It puts a big ol smile on your face.
nothing like breakfast, coffee from Dunkin Donuts and watching a revolver video by Hickok45.
"Gonna have to smoke some pot after that"
The look on my wife's face while listening in the backround= priceless.
That second compensator is for the LRN rounds for easier clean up of led build up. I use it when shooting Colts for plinking. Real easy to swap out.
led?
Finally Hickok45 has listened to my request. Now he just needs to do the .460 Rowland now to finish my request for now.
Its versatility is reflected in this: Casull and/or hot 460 for self defense and when in a grizz country, Schofield and/or 45 long colt when plinking (not to say that these are not powerful enough for a self defense too, but they are much cheaper)...
That's some big iron. I have shot one several times before and it's a whole lot of fun. It's actually really tame with .45 Colt.
It was over in a moment and the crowd all gathered 'round
There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground
Oh, he might have went on livin' but he made one fatal slip
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip,
Big iron on his hip
Big iron, big iron,
Oh he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip,
Big iron on his hip
FilterExel that's what I noticed ppl don't realize these are 45 caliber rounds all of em and the 460 makes them seem like 22 or 38 Cal depending on the grain, that is a lot of pistola SMH
I shoot mine with really hot 45 long colt rounds loaded to half a 460. Starline brass. Really a great medium load.
*The ULTIMATE carry gun. @_____@*
Danmandingo Apendix Carry
I prefer my gun to be shorter than anything else carried in that area.
Danmandingo how old are you?
B. R.
Same here, thats why i carry a 8 inch colt anaconda ;)
Not sure a 2mm Kolibri can stop a criminal though.
Went back to watch this. I love my 460, 5” barrel for Kodiak protection. Fun to shoot but not easy to sight for me. Thanks
You’ve got a radio voice man lol
“When you make a lot of mistakes you learn how to fix them”
Great video!! I LOVE my 460!! The only thing I didnt hear you mention was the light trigger. the one you were shooting may not have had one but mine has an ultra sensitive trigger which is great when shooting for accuracy!! Thanks for the great video!!!
fred Ely same here..I have the 7.5 PC..if you breathe on that trigger in single action if goes off...love it by far my favorite gun I own sofar
Hickok was coughing because he was smoking to much pot
romeo davis "too much"
hickok smoking on the loud
'too much" is correct
Stuff your nasty comment! He is more man than you will ever be!!!!!!
This was the first firearm (including a scope) that I personally used when I went to an outdoor range.
Always a great time watching your videos. Excellent reviews, very practical information.
Wow, one handed and he drills the target bullseye with the hot loads! Hickok45, you da man!

Ah yes .460 s&w...
For when you need to take down a charging grizzly with body armor from a mile away
The Taurus Raging Judge is another huge revolver I'd love to see here!
Golden Gear Id love to see Taurus/Rossi make the revolver rifle in 454 Casull (raging judge rifle.)
I wonder if a person could just swap out the cylinder with a raging judge?
@@jeremylakenes6859 interesting idea, idk but that would be cool

Man that was loud I'm gonna have to smoke some pot after that lol hahaha
You crack me up...
