  • hello friends,
Since I'm not living with my parents anymore, I've found that my ability to speak Hakka is slowly declining. But I have noticed that I use these phrases again and again, so much that it's become my second skin. I feel very comfortable using these phrases to express myself, so I hope you enjoyed watching me say them over and over again :)
Also, let me know if you have any requests!
    Sending my love,
    M

Please keep making videos on speaking Hakka. I recently visited my auntie , she only speaks Hakka ,and I have lost so much of this language. My parents and grandparents have passed .
I enjoyed this video…reminds me of my childhood days talking to my parents.

I think it's so cool that there are still people from the younger generations, such as yourself, who are able to speak Hakka. I think it's really rare in the countries where the dialect actually originated (especially China and Hong Kong). I even had to look up Suriname and was shocked that I had never even heard of this country....

I laughed so hard when you said "Yiu Mao Gao chor" which brought back so much memories of my family saying it all the time! The weird thing is I hardly spoken any Hakka since I came back to Hong Kong over 15 years ago and it's gotten so rusty (ironically) I am having problems making complete sentences. Keep up the good work!

    Hopefully diverse Hakka people can
    increase contact and organization!
    ---websites show World Hakka Congress
    increase Hakka media--- vlogs, dialect
instruction videos (more), songs + lyrics
    + other dialects and English.translations,
discussions in Hakka on any topic, new
    media, like portable translators, video
    games, vlogs, etc.
Good luck !!! Long live Hakka and all
Chinese dialects and sub dialects !!!

Hi Michelle, I think your videos are hilarious and most enjoyable. Funny thing is that i think your roots and mine are somewhat same. My parents moved from Guangdong to Surinam (way back), lived there for 20 plus years, moved to the Netherlands where i was born (hoi :)). My hakka sounds almost exactly like yours. You may have noticed while in the Netherlands that most hakka speaking Chinese come from Surinam.
So happy to find your channel. Some of the phrases I still use om daily basis, especially the shower one.
Keep up the great work. A moi len dhai 🤩👌

This is fantastic! Thanks so much. I’ve been studying Chinese languages for around 10 years now. I can speak mandarin, Cantonese and Sichuanese (Chengdu) dialect. Now working my way south to Hakka! Could you do a video on the most common 20-50 verbs? Just from understanding Cantonese, Hakka is coming quite easy for me. Keep up the videos!!

someone else mentioned Suriname in the comments. I'm aware of this country as a former Dutch footballer, Edgar Davids, is said to be of Dutch Suriname background, and that's the only time I'd heard it mentioned til today. I had no idea there were Hakka speakers there! My grandparents and parents are Hong-Kong Hakka speakers, and your Hakka sounds just like ours. I'm UK born and raised but Hakka was literally my first language

what I find most frustrated and i think this is a fundamental problem is trying to anglosize hakka. I am not aware of a 'standard' spelling for hakka words - unlike Mandarin which has Pinyin. Maybe I am wrong but and there is a 'standard ' ... that will be great.
