  • Since 2002, LN Engineering has offered precision performance engine parts and services for Porsche vehicles. Following the introduction of their aircooled Nickies cylinder and piston sets, LN's M96 and M97 engine block reconditioning service allows for increase in displacement and horsepower while improving reliability and longevity for 1997 through 2008 Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 996 and 997 models.
    LN Engineering's Nickies sleeving process fits billet aluminum sleeves similar to the Nikasil sleeves found in watercooled Mezger engines used in Porsche 911 996 and 997 Turbo, GT2, and GT3 models.. A Porsche M96 or M97 engine rebuilt using Nickies sleeves addresses all known issues including cylinder bore scoring, cracking of liners (also known as a d-chunk failure), and slipped sleeves found with Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 996 and 997 models with watercooled Porsche M96 and M97 engines.
    Having accumulated extensive expertise over the course of almost two decades and having outfitted thousands of engines with Nickies, LN Engineering stands at the forefront in addressing cylinder-related challenges linked to Lokasil engine blocks. This is especially notable concerning augmentations in displacement of up to 4.0 liters and beyond. When it comes to sleeving larger-bore M96 and M97 engines, no entity across the globe has a longer track record than LN Engineering.

      Thanks! We use a 6 series extruded aluminum alloy. The extrusion process provides an excellent grain structure which further improves the performance of our sleeves. The Nikasil plating provides a low friction and low wear surface while allowing for superior thermal transfer for improved cooling.

    Seriously, pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't cast iron sleeves eliminate the possibility of future bore scoring? Just diving into this subject due to Grandsons latest project. But aluminum piston in an aluminum cylinder has been problematic from the first design using an aluminum block with raw or coated aluminum bores.

    • @lnengineeringllc
      @lnengineeringllc  2 роки тому +3

      No. We've had many blocks come to us with cast or ductile iron sleeve with scoring as well, but that's not the biggest issue with using them on an M96 block. The castings are very minimal and the interference required to keep the sleeve from moving often leads to the block cracking. If insufficient press is used, they rotate and cause head gasket leaks. Our process maintains the integrity of the all aluminum block while providing a proven wear surface. Nikasil has been used since the 70s in high performance applications and is still used to this day by many OEMs.

    I have a M119 Mercedes engine with a Alusil Cylinder finish. I would like to bore and stroke it but it rely’s on iron sprayed pistons. Could I get you to sleeve my Mercedes Block?

    • @lnengineeringllc
      @lnengineeringllc  8 місяців тому

      Yes, we can indeed recondition and repair a Mercedes Alusil block. It would be no different from what we do with Cayenne engines. The most cost effective option is to slightly overbore the block, say 1mm, Nikasil plate it, and then fit it with new aftermarket pistons. To do this we would need a sample piston (or two, if they are bank specific) so we can use this for a reference when building the new replacement pistons.

  • @bernardwarr4187

    Why do you glue the sleeves and not use an interference fit? Is that because of poor block integrity? Would you use interference on an LS, Mercedes or other V8’s? You are relying on the head gasket fire ring to stop the sleeves rocking?

    • @lnengineeringllc
      @lnengineeringllc  8 місяців тому +1

      You got it. We often get blocks in that have been steel sleeved where the blocks have cracked when sleeves are fitted with interference fit. The block parent metal is easily compromised. Once the sleeves are fitted, they are cured and receive a final bake to get full strength out of the adhesive. The adhesive is rated to 450F, but if it ever gets that hot, you have bigger problems! The sleeves aren't going anywhere - in fact they are next to impossible to remove without machining them out after we've completed the process.

    • @lnengineeringllc

      The sleeve is stepped to it is sandwiched between the head and bottom of the water jacket. We also o-ring the block and the sleeves are glued into the block permanently.

    What makes the insert stay in place and not allow coolant to migrate into the block where the "sleeve lip" meets the shortened cylinder?

    • @lnengineeringllc
      @lnengineeringllc  9 місяців тому

      The sleeve ends up sandwiched between the head and bottom of the water jacket, so it's can't necessarily fall or slip, and is o-ringed to provide positive sealing. The proprietary gluing process is not shown in the video, but this is done rather than using a press-fit for the sleeves.

    Is this similar to what Hartech does? Do you also create "grooves" to evenly cool the engine block? Also, would this eliminate all the regimen necessary to keep Lokasil treated bores from getting scored (which quite frankly is ridiculous, i.e. driving the car right away after a cold start, plus no short drives, etc.)?

    • @lnengineeringllc
      @lnengineeringllc  2 роки тому +5

      Similar in that we use aluminum nikasil sleeves like they do, but different that that we retain the crankcase portion of the cylinder to locate our sleeve. We also o-ring the block to ensure positive sealing of the sleeves. Where Hartech just recently started doing big bore conversions, that's pretty much all we've done since day one. We rarely do stock sizes unless it's for a specific racing class.
      With exception of bore sizes over 101mm, we retain the stock open deck configuration and no further modifications to the cooling system are carried out as we have not seen the need to do so; larger bore sizes are offered only though Flat 6 Innovations and they do additional modifications to these engines themselves outside of our processes.
      Even with customers putting out 450-500 hp normally aspirated with our Nickies sleeved blocks, we've never seen a cooling or longevity issue. Nikasil, or in our case the NSC (nickel silicon carbide) plating, doesn't have the same issues as Lokasil or Alusil, so no worries there.
      Certainly using a process like our Nickies or Hartech (if you're in the UK), is certainly the way to go rather than steel sleeves that come with a whole host of other issues.

    does bore scoring occur on MA1 engines especially 2.9 from cayman?

    • @lnengineeringllc
      @lnengineeringllc  2 роки тому +2

      Yes. The MA1 or any engine with Alusil blocks can suffer from bore scoring, however we do not see it anywhere as frequently as we do with the M96 or M97 engines. We have not had any calls with reported failures with the 2.9 engine but I do not know if that is because the cars are not as expensive and they don't get fixed or they don't have problems as often as the larger 3.4, 3.6, and 3.8 engines. Here's more on what we do with the MA1 engines: lnengineering.com/products/watercooled-porsche-cylinders-sleeves-and-pistons/9a1-2009-boxster-cayman-911.html

    Now I know why it costs so much to rebuild a Porsche motor

    • @lnengineeringllc
      @lnengineeringllc  2 роки тому +3

      Yes, not as simple as throwing a new set of rings and bearings into an engine anymore. Although there are shops that quote rebuilds for $10k or less on these engines, they have to cut corners somewhere - whether that is reusing most components that should be replaced during the rebuild or even reusing the block without properly reconditioning it all in the name of saving money. What most people don't realize is that it ends up costing more when you have to rebuild the engine again because the "budget" rebuild didn't last. We see this all the time.
