  • Måndagsbörsen Swedish TV Show March 29, 1982 Program managers: Jonas Hallberg, Susanne Olsson and Staffan Schmidt. Cast: Olof Palme, Squeeze, Phil Collins, Madhouse, Janne Schaffer, Pete Robinson, etc. - Season 6, Episode 9
Phil Collins performs "In The Air Tonight," and then an untitled jazz/rock/fusion jam with band, and Phil and Peter Robinson (and band) do Brand X's "Dance of the Illegal Aliens."
Sometimes it seems to me that the phrase “what a small world” really does apply to music and musicians. In this incredibly cool episode of the Swedish TV Show, Måndagsbörsen, (a mixed musical entertainment show live from restaurant Hamburger Börs in Stockholm), we get to see 31 year-old Phil Collins performing “In The Air Tonight,” solo, on piano in a beautifully understated performance that is unlike live ITAT performances I have seen before. It’s possible that because it was still relatively fresh (I mean he has not played it one zillions times yet at this point in life) both in the number of times he’d performed it -and the events that caused him to write it-- that it was coming out of him in just a natural way. Over the years, I am guessing the phrasing, pause points, etc. became more and more standard for whatever period of time until he felt like changing it up.
We then get to hear a jazz/rock/funk jam of musicians that includes Peter Robinson, (keyboard player who was with Phil’s solo band at that time. Peter also was in Brand X with Phil as they came in and out of that group). The other guys on stage I was able to identify are (and here is where that small world comes in) are Janne Schaffer on guitar, Rutger Gunnarsson on bass, and Per Lindvall on drums. All of these guys were at some point in the ABBA Band of musicians.
Phil was in Stockholm at that time to produce Frida’s first English language solo album, “Something’s Going On,” at Polar Studios. At the time of this show’s taping/airing, March 29, 1982, Phil had already been in Stockholm for five to six weeks working on the project. Peter was part of the group Phil brought in for the album, as was Daryl Stuermer, Mo Foster (who we recently lost, may he rest in peace) and the original lineup of the Phenix Horns.
In addition, Swedish music producer/musician Anders Henriksson was also on stage on piano. I was not able to identify the Sax player. And of course, we see Phil standing playing percussion on a pair of Conga drums. I have searched and listened what I think is every song Janne Schaeffer ever recorded, because it seemed like the song was one of his…and I cannot identify a name for the jam that is the second song we see. A professional musician friend of mine listened to it and had never heard it. He said it was a “shuffle,” and it was his guess that it might have been their idea to come up with a ‘jam.’ He said what is being played is a fairly common progression that any musician could play along with and have fun and make it sound cool, which seems like what they did. Now if there are any prog/jazz/rock/fusion people out there who can identify it - and it’s actually a song vs. a jam, please let me know.
After the second song, show host Jonas Hallberg, (Swedish journalist/radio/talk/tv host/comedian) interviews Phil. The juxtaposition of these two is funny in and of itself- as Hallberg, 6’7’ in height, towers over Phil (and everyone else) at 5’8” - and the way Phil responds to him is so fun. Hallberg asks Phil if he is Italian (?), thinks he’s left Genesis, and asks Phil about an impression he does of the Muppets' Swedish Chef puppet that is HYSTERICAL. Hallberg generally conducts a very short (and somewhat strange) interview with Phil, but it’s delightful and I am thrilled to have figured out a way for us all to see it.
After the show’s co-host, Staffan Schmidt, interviews Peter Robinson, they have Peter announce that the next song is one by Brand X, the band he and Phil are in together. The song is “Dance of the Illegal Aliens.” Another proper jam that is really cool. Phil plays a variety of standing percussion on this one.
Also on the episode was the band Squeeze. Paul Carrack was a member of Squeeze at the time, and I believe was serving as their keyboard player by this point. As I understand it, Carrack replaced former Squeeze keyboard player Jools Holland in 1981. As further small world examples continue, Paul, who many people feel has a similar ‘look’ to Phil, sang for Mike and The Mechanics during a period where they has some pretty big hits. Carrack also sang the huge Squeeze hit “Tempted.” There was no crossover with Phil and Squeeze, and we did not see any more of Phil during the episode.
I hope you found the info interesting -- and that it helps support the reasons I so firmly believe qualify Phil for inclusion in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. His contribution to music as a solo artist is beyond significant over his career of more than 40 years as a solo artist.

Phil Collins in his prime was easily the hardest working man in show business. His solo career speaks for itself, spanning 4 decades of hits. He's the greatest rock drummer of all-time. I agree he needs to be in, and his solo induction is way overdue.
Thanks very much for posting this! It is an incredible find! Cheers!

100%. I read in his book that the 80s were basically a whirlwind for him, where his solo work, Genesis work, BrandX + session work with other bands basically meant he never took a break for years.

@@GuaranteedEtern In the 70s he was always busy, too. I think 40 of the records he played on in the 1970s are documented in the incredible book by the great and amazing Armando Gallo, "I Know What I Like: The Music of Genesis". He followed Genesis around with his camera from almost day one. Phil played on some incredibly famous albums. He's on Tea For The Tiller man by Cat Stevens. I think Peter Gabriel played on that album as well. Phil recorded congas for George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, but the tracks weren't used. He was possibly the busiest man in music.

'In the Air Tonight' had not been out too long but was still a huge hit (and one reason Freida asked Phil to produce her hit album). Love how Mr. Collins segues through the big drum segment with a quiet section. He was so good at transitions and creative with his orchestrations. In this performance, once we get through the preliminaries and interview, NICE music. They kinda rock out on 'Dance'. Thanks for sharing. GET PHIL VOTED IN!

It has been said Phil presented In The Air Tonight to Genesis for inclusion on Duke. Tony Banks denies this but I wonder if Phil did and this is how it sounded rather than the version we're all familiar. Certainly it's a rawer, intimate, more personal version and I can see how it might've seemed, in this style, it wouldn't fit into Genesis as it would come across as something Phil would do on his own (the only 'solo' Genesis allowed, if you think about it, was Steve Hackett's Horizons and even then it works as an intro to Supper's Ready on Foxtrot).
