And Questlove KILLS it! What's the most amazing to me is that Questlove does a 2-drummer part all by himself. If you look back at all the live versions of this song, you usually see a drummer keeping rhythm & Phil doing the iconic roll and all the fills that come afterwards. Very impressive

I don't know how anybody else feels, but I LOVE the way Phil Collins' singing voice has matured as an elderly man. He sings In The Air Tonight with slightly different set of emotional flow throughout, compared to original performances, which I think gives it a whole new dynamic... again, adding to its timelessness. Excellent!
I loved this song, all my life! Then on the night of of February 10th 2018 my wife of 28 years died in my arms, from a blood clot. The ambulance came and took her away. They had worked on her for over an hour. It was a cold and wet night. I got in our car and headed to the hospital, this song was playing over the radio. It now, makes me feel guilty. I was a nurse, and I should have seen the signs of her condition. I’m alone with my guilt. We had been planning a special 30th anniversary. January 12th 2020 I spent the day with my wife next to her. I still have the $100.00 bottle of champagne. Phil if you read this, thank you so much. I have been a fan of yours and Geniuses since the 70’s. You are a gift to this world. Thank you 🙏
You can tell how good a drummer is by the faces he makes. Questlove is focusing on the beats you can tell that by the expressions on his face, when he gets through the hard part he smiles. He is a true Drummer.
What's amazing is when it first came out, it didn't come near the top of the charts. Maybe 19 or so. It became a better and more popular as the years have passed. It's absolutely timeless.
honestly brings tears to my eyes..growing up with this man and this song..and watching it premiere on Miami Vice..NOTHING can match it. The whole song is just magical..I hate to see Phil struggle but hes older and been through some issues..BUT man..What i would give to just see him do that live..LEGEND!!
I have watched this countless times and still shout out at that drumbeat!! Brotha Questlove, no one…NO ONE…can take that moment from you!!! That was epic & no doubt musically respected!! ICONIC!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Catherine Dore With good reason, Collins is an amazing drummer. I would imagine that Genesis etc. had some amount of impact on his development of the craft.
Phil Collins never left the 80s/early 90s. Even when he was featured in a video game in the mid-2000s, he STILL somehow ended up being in the 80s. It's a gift.
Phil Collins is not underrated... to be one of the three musicians in history to sold over 150 million album units separately both as a band member and a solo artist (the other 2 is Michael jackson and Paul MCartney)... he is a LEGEND.
One of the greatest voices ever. Saw many of his concerts in my 20's.This is my ultimate favorite song of ALL music for me. He struggles with debilitating back pain and it looks like he's really struggling with pain here. Facial expression, hand in back, tight grip on mic stand. His back pain is what made him stop touring. :( Last of his concert were done sitting in a chair. He is LEGENDARY!!!
Watching this legend grow old brings tears to my eyes...his music was so many years of my life and especially my childhood. Live every single day well. Peace and love to all.
I have loved Phil Collins since the 80's and still do today! He has a grandson that can do his drumming for him while on tour and he is incredible! At 66+ Phil will probably die singing his most famous song. What a way to go-sharing your God given gift to the world! Our hearts and souls live thru you Phil-God Bless & LIVE FOREVER. God would be privileged to have you sing for Him!
Wow! That just grabbed me in some kind of way and the iconic drum solo Questlove did gave me soulful chills ... it took me back. So great to see Phil's comeback cuz he's had some rough years.
Can you imagine being Quest Love??? Performing an entirely different genre for his entire career, then Jimmy Fallon hires The Roots, and now performing the best tiny drum solo in any song ever, playing WITH Phil Collins!! O M G Talk about amazing
Was thinking the same. He is an accomplished musician and has played with numerous artists through the year, but personally, I was a drummer, doing the drumming bride in In the Air Tonight with Phil Collins performing would be some kind of dream come true.
I don't know ?uestlove, but I know his taste in music, and it's hard to imagine that playing the solo to this song while Phil Collins sings wasn't fulfilling a lifelong dream that he never imagined in a million years, despite all his success, could ever come true.
Well, Jimmy certainly didn't need to fake any enthusiasm this time! His reaction was a perfect button on this freaking awesome performance. I honestly never expected anything on his show to make me tear up, but this did. Whole lotta nostalgia there, from 1981 up through the present, and it's awesome to see and hear that Phil's still got it.
The look on his face "Oh man, I didn't f--k it up!" You could tell he'd obviously been sweating this one. It's one of the most iconic drum fills of the 1980s, but no pressure! Anyways, he nailed it.
Watching the show with the previous couple of episodes, Questlove was sweating buckets. He didn't want to jinx it. I'm sure you are correct, that was probably top on his bucket list.
4:58 ...that moment when the Master turns around point on your work done & check right Blessing U!!...and then u hold the breath just to after right away Give a Big Smile & Thanks to God!! :)

Fun fact, that drum kit was used especially for this song. Single heads, open bass used for the sound. Check out the 15" tom!!! Awesome. Definitely not his normal kit used on the show.
3:27 from the day adam was born, a moment like this in music history will never reappear.Phil your a legend. IF YOU DONT AIR DRUM IN 3:27 YOUR NOT HUMAN
At his consert in Norway in 2019, when this song started playing I literally cried my eyes out, so many memories of me and my dad when i was younger! And when he said Ive been waiting for this moment all my life" I yelled it out so loud he said: " I love the entusiasm in this one". He's my biggest idol, and having him notice me like that was the greatest moment of my LIFE ❤️🥺
If you are in my Generation (1975) you can only feel deep respect for this man, who was one of the best musicians in a time where he had to compete with a lot of other exceptional artists on a quality level we all can only dream of nowadays
I mean no disrespect to Phil, as he is one of my all-time favorite artists, and I can't even imagine the struggles he has gone through with the nerve issues and learning to walk and drum again. That said, I think he's still got a little ways to go before his voice is in prime shape.
Am I the only one that literally holds my breath and don't breathe until after the drum solo and then scream "YAAAAAAAS!" every time I hear this song?!?!?! I'm just asking.🤔🤔🤔🤔
I don't get around much anymore and have missed seeing Phil Collins. He has magic in his voice. And the band is great too. I wish we could see more of him. He was always the gentleman...
You can also see some relief there too. That part is fast and DEMANDS precision and PERFECT timing and you GOT to FEEL it. If any of those components are missing, it's going to sound like a cheap imitation.
Phil's commitment to popped collars should not be overlooked

I agree. I loved Phil Collins music every since I was little. And him being in the Genesis band was awesome. Yes he's a true legend. :-)
Clifford Virador I love Kenny Loggins music as well.
QuestLove just back there waiting patiently for his solo😂
kimber taylor "he's been waiting for this moment all his life" 😂
For real and he nailed it
Oscar Buonafina one handed at that!
kimber taylor he killed it to girl!
Impatiently*
I don't know how anybody else feels, but I LOVE the way Phil Collins' singing voice has matured as an elderly man. He sings In The Air Tonight with slightly different set of emotional flow throughout, compared to original performances, which I think gives it a whole new dynamic... again, adding to its timelessness. Excellent!
I don’t think he’s elderly - There are marathon runners in their 90s.
Age is only a number and its relative.
He did awesome here.
Agree
Makes us realise we have gotten older too 😙 where did be it go?
@curragh 42 Yet he's still singing in the same key
You can tell Phil’s a drummer, the way his energy came out when the drums kicked in, he felt comfortable as soon as that fill started
It's amazing how great Phil sounds after all these years :)
Amy I know right?! It’s like no time has passed at all!
The great one's don't age
Thank you 🙏
Sorry for the loss of your wife.
Sorry for your pain xx
im sorry for your loss, please don’t blame yourself
Sorry for your hurt. Hope time can help you heal
Let go of the guilt, you did not cause it nor foresee it!
You can tell how good a drummer is by the faces he makes. Questlove is focusing on the beats you can tell that by the expressions on his face, when he gets through the hard part he smiles. He is a true Drummer.
What hard part? Haha. The genius of this song is in the simplicity, any one taking drum lessons for a few months can play this.
@@beastmry I think it was more playing an iconic song with the guy who wrote it right there.
For me still one of the best songs of the 80's.
Thanks for liking, watching and listening to my songs, Thanks for your love♥️ and moral support. I hope you have been well entertained over the years?
What's amazing is when it first came out, it didn't come near the top of the charts. Maybe 19 or so. It became a better and more popular as the years have passed. It's absolutely timeless.
Love it how people actually screamed during the performance at 3:23
That's cuz Questlove was nervous but he nailed it!!
Tuddec Not something you hear very often during Tonight Show live performances.
honestly brings tears to my eyes..growing up with this man and this song..and watching it premiere on Miami Vice..NOTHING can match it. The whole song is just magical..I hate to see Phil struggle but hes older and been through some issues..BUT man..What i would give to just see him do that live..LEGEND!!
mikieson He sounds better in recent performances, this was one of if not his first in years.
yeah..ive seen some on here. ive watched probably a thousand videos of Phil doing this song..lol..crazy.. :)
He could sing this to marry had a little lamb and it would still be right. Lol
mikieson thank you for putting that so politely and expressing how we feel
Do it To it With mikieson Bro you could see how is singing I has some health problems and alcohol
Playing GTA Vice Stories was the first time I heard that song. It was like a flashback. He is a legend
Alejandro Méndez well he actually in the game too in a few missions and sing in the game
First time i heard it was on the Cadbury ad with the gorilla playing the drums.
Old times.......... :(
Same bro
awevo yo lo jugue en PSPy salir la rola completa, incluso sale el Phil en nade las misiones
The greatest drop of all time.
That drummer has been waiting his whole life to do that drum solo with Phil Collins look at the smile on his face
mrfundah oh lord!
Phil Collins at the end like “I don’t do this anymore, but I did it for you Jimmy.”
Well he did until his final concert ever recently.
@@shahaffiq5860 Not in that key and not with that energy. His ability to do the tune in this key (already quite a bit lower than the OG) is long gone.
I really love how they didn’t make him sing that really high part and let him improvise for that I love him so much he’s one of the G.O.A.T.S
Watching because Questlove was SO nervous about this and it was kind of adorable.
(You nailed it, man!)
Catherine Dore With good reason, Collins is an amazing drummer. I would imagine that Genesis etc. had some amount of impact on his development of the craft.
I would be nervous as hell. Those drums are trademark of this song and performing it infront of the guy who wrote them... Hands down.
I would be too! Collins is a great drummer and an amazing song writer..... to have the chance to perform with this guy would be such an honor.....
Of course. That could have been the end of a career as a drummer to screw up that drum solo playing with Collins.
#perfectscore
Phil Collins The Legend!
Living Legend!!!!!!
Always!
Class never dies it is passed on :-)
Absolutely! Singing one of the best songs EVER! Welcome back Phil!
Rai Alvis yessir
Dude still has it. Awesome performance.
That drum line will forever be iconic no matter what decade u were born in
Age catches up with all of us eventually , but him being a legend is forever ! Good on ya phill
Absolutely amazing how great his voice still is!👍
Thank you Phil for bringing the 80's back by popping your collar!!!
One pop collar cool! Oh Lord!
Phil Collins never left the 80s/early 90s. Even when he was featured in a video game in the mid-2000s, he STILL somehow ended up being in the 80s. It's a gift.
And PHIL COLLINS can sing that song and drum at the same time. He Very underated and rare talent musician !
Phil Collins is not underrated... to be one of the three musicians in history to sold over 150 million album units separately both as a band member and a solo artist (the other 2 is Michael jackson and Paul MCartney)... he is a LEGEND.
He isn't underrated, just you dont know it, he's rich as heck....
@@BaibaVulgaris
He is _only_ the second richest drummer and isn’t even the richest British nor leftie drummer.
how can phil collins be so fucking cute and badass at the same time?!
What the fuck are you doing here
Pause...
Why do i agree with you.....
I have no idea
Pause my guy
3:23 every drummer's dream come true 😅😅😅
Fals3Agent Put this on a loop.
So true
Fals3Agent Watch closely on the wide shot that follows to see Questlove grin like an idiot. I would too if I were him in that moment.
lol idiot? thanks
Fallon said in another segment of the show that he had been stressing out for months about doing this
3:23 - you're welcome
ty
4:08
3:23 without all the buildup just isnt the same. Listen from the beginning!!
DO DUM DO DUM DO DUM DO DO DO DO DUM
Idont like the drum play
One of the greatest voices ever. Saw many of his concerts in my 20's.This is my ultimate favorite song of ALL music for me. He struggles with debilitating back pain and it looks like he's really struggling with pain here. Facial expression, hand in back, tight grip on mic stand. His back pain is what made him stop touring. :( Last of his concert were done sitting in a chair. He is LEGENDARY!!!
Hello Theresa , how are you doing?
Could anyone ever so completely reach the peak of their field, as a professional drummer getting to play drums for Phil Collins?
Watching this legend grow old brings tears to my eyes...his music was so many years of my life and especially my childhood.
Live every single day well.
Peace and love to all.
I have loved Phil Collins since the 80's and still do today! He has a grandson that can do his drumming for him while on tour and he is incredible! At 66+ Phil will probably die singing his most famous song. What a way to go-sharing your God given gift to the world! Our hearts and souls live thru you Phil-God Bless & LIVE FOREVER. God would be privileged to have you sing for Him!
Same with me. This man is my childhood and I’m 30
@@sharonleehamilton6671 His **Son..Nic works w.him.a very young guy..handsome and talented.
Wow! That just grabbed me in some kind of way and the iconic drum solo Questlove did gave me soulful chills ... it took me back. So great to see Phil's comeback cuz he's had some rough years.
Lisa Dawn
Lisa Dawn then the drum solo should have used BOTH drumsticks.... disappointed :(
I didn't even sing along like I normally would. Was too busy enjoying how awesome he still sounds. Loved every minute of that!
'no stranger for u and me'...bam bam bam bam bam bam bam.... damnnnn, that part..never gets old
Can you imagine being Quest Love??? Performing an entirely different genre for his entire career, then Jimmy Fallon hires The Roots, and now performing the best tiny drum solo in any song ever, playing WITH Phil Collins!! O M G
Talk about amazing
yeah not many have had the chance to play as diversified as questlove. hes a real life teddy bear playing mad drums.
Ingrid Hanson. Totally did you see the flash of a smile as he did it..
When you say fuck it, I'm going to rock it in a polo.
with a popped collar!
first thing I noticed. I like it, Phil Collin's doesn't give a fuck.
Jon Gordon totally made me lol
Phil deserves to not give a fuck!
Jon Gordon Collar popped too
This is one of my favorite songs of all time
This is why I'm damn proud to be a child of the 80's. Song redefines mesmerizing. That slow build...
The man still has retained much more of his voice than many of his fellow musicians of his era. Still timeless.
Sounds like hes missing teeth... why wouldnt he get that fixed though
@@iwontgiveupc7292 4:16 nope
Didn't do enough drugs to lose his vocal ability lol
Bobby brown lost his voice :(
Phil wasn't into drugs. His kryptonite was women. 😉
Getting that sign of approval from Phil is everything! Questlove hit it spot on!
Stunning. And I'm betting Questlove just checked something off his bucket list. 😭❤️
The look on his face "Oh man, I didn't f--k it up!" You could tell he'd obviously been sweating this one. It's one of the most iconic drum fills of the 1980s, but no pressure!
Anyways, he nailed it.
mightymartianca Nah, I think it's THE drum fill of the 80s. Instantly fills you with 80s vibes and it's instantly timeless as well.
Yes I think so because I came.
Watching the show with the previous couple of episodes, Questlove was sweating buckets. He didn't want to jinx it. I'm sure you are correct, that was probably top on his bucket list.
I think Quest played it safe 'not' to fuck it up. You could tell he was a bit stiff for that part. Cant say I blame him.
Quest nailed it and Phil gave him kudos at the end.
Almost 40 years later and I still love that song!
4:58 ...that moment when the Master turns around point on your work done & check right Blessing U!!...and then u hold the breath just to after right away Give a Big Smile & Thanks to God!! :)
I've been to many concerts..know all the music..this still puts a lump in my tummy and throat..hard to explain the feeling.Ill be forever greatful to this great guy.Dealing w.cancer now..found this.Cant stop smiling.Tnx Mr Phil..love ya..
I wish the best for you, my friend.
I'm praying for you, God be with you and your family 🙏
03:26 - BEST QUESTLOVE MOMENT EVER! :)
Imagine how many times he played that as a kid and finally getting to do it in front of literally the whole world
The smile on Quest Love's face @ 3:33 is priceless. Ultimate for any drummer to get to play that bit of that song.
Fun fact, that drum kit was used especially for this song. Single heads, open bass used for the sound. Check out the 15" tom!!! Awesome. Definitely not his normal kit used on the show.
I was actually wondering about the percussion set-up. Thx 4 commenting that fun fact! 😁
It is obviously the only way to do it live for Phil Collins, and I believe, even Ludwig would have insisted on providing that style of kit.
Listening in 2025? Never get tired of listening to
Phil Collins. Still have my 8-track and cassette tapes
amazing
Quest was cheesing so hard at the end lol I would be 2 if I got to drum for Phil Collins on his own song
Why is your profile pic so laggy on my screen? What's this sourcery??
So glad to see Daryl Stuermer is still with him. He's a great player
3:27 from the day adam was born, a moment like this in music history will never reappear.Phil your a legend.
IF YOU DONT AIR DRUM IN 3:27 YOUR NOT HUMAN
One of the greatest songs ever written!!!!!!!!
He may have some mild "old man voice" going on, but for the most part, Phil's still got it.
u hv a good ear. i meann good ears
one in a million heard it too , who didnt lol
With age comes experience
His voice is so much stronger here than on his subsequent tour..
wow. amazing performance every time best artist of all time hands down.
who liked before he even started singing 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Naomi Mendes wow
Naomi Mendes I couldn't help myself. A true icon.
Naomi Mendes #SAMEHERE
Naomi Mendes WHO IS HE LOL
I mean no disrespect to Phil, as he is one of my all-time favorite artists, and I can't even imagine the struggles he has gone through with the nerve issues and learning to walk and drum again. That said, I think he's still got a little ways to go before his voice is in prime shape.
one of my favorite songs of all time! Yasssssssss!!! #classic
Turtle Power ugh
#LEGEND ;)
Turtle Power same
Am I the only one that literally holds my breath and don't breathe until after the drum solo and then scream "YAAAAAAAS!" every time I hear this song?!?!?! I'm just asking.🤔🤔🤔🤔
I thought i was alone..are you a virgo? If so is this a virgo thing cuz now my daughter does it too and were both virgos!

Love your vids how are you not verified
had the pleasure to watch this genius three times live on different shows both solo and as well with Genesis. He's truely a legend...
I don't get around much anymore and have missed seeing Phil Collins. He has magic in his voice. And the band is great too. I wish we could see more of him. He was always the gentleman...
INARGUABLY, one of the 80s music ICONs...and one of the TOP most iconic songs of that decade.
One of the best songs EVER... touches something inside that I just can't explain... and he still has it... after all these years... just love Phil!!
quest love was like 'nailed it'
If you watched the whole show, he WAS freaked a bit about blowing it...therefore the crowds' reaction when he did!
Fletcher Hatcher or you can just leave him to whatever what he wants his name to be. that works too.
Like "Prince", "Madonna", "Moby", "Fatboy Slim" or any other musician that has a stage name. All terrible, right?
You can also see some relief there too. That part is fast and DEMANDS precision and PERFECT timing and you GOT to FEEL it. If any of those components are missing, it's going to sound like a cheap imitation.
Phil used to sing and play the drums..iconic song. Just started listening to him again..Genesis too.
God, that drop is just gorgeously done.
He's taken great care of his voice. Amazing!
Yeah and axel rose did the opposite
John Joseph de jesus yea Vince Neil did the opposite as well but Brian Johnson took good care of his voice as well
