Best part was Questlove's smile after the solo. He just completed every drummer's lifelong dream.
I felt Questlove was not breathing while hes doing the drums but after seeing Phil's reaction towards him damn you gota check that one on the bucket list!
Great comment! With all this racism going on like the 18oos it was good to see life long Liberal Phil and Q do their thing.
Oh for sure. This is an iconic song and those drums are def one of the most well known in our lifetime. And to perform it with Phil Collins...that shit is dope.
You might say he's been waiting for that moment all his life.
Luke Shoewalker yep!!
Holy shit, the chills when quest love smashed this drums
real shit
has to be a big deal for questlove ... his smile at the end :)
Yer Boi I love that part of the song
Quest had been freaking out on social media the days before the performance...Jimmy even messed w/ him during the interview w/ Collins :)))
Quest must have been so stoked to been able to do that
The drum solo is always gonna be iconic, but the guitar leading up to "that moment" will always be so hauntingly great.
And Questlove KILLS it! What's the most amazing to me is that Questlove does a 2-drummer part all by himself. If you look back at all the live versions of this song, you usually see a drummer keeping rhythm & Phil doing the iconic roll and all the fills that come afterwards. Very impressive
@@gedbeat15 No, no he doesn't.
@@akiraakai yes he does, bitch.
@Michael O'Connell one bar solo

I’m pretty sure the whole band smiled when Questlove nailed the drum solo!

It's a Drum Fill (Roll) aka. Drum Phil 😅
I didn't doubt nor did his band mates doubt he would nail it. Quest is no joke
That’s his son
I think it’s safe to say that Questlove has been waiting for this moment for all his life?
ALL his life...heck I don't even play drums and I'm waiting to play that solo too! lol
Oh Lord...lol
💪🏽🤜🏾
meh too.
I guess He could feel it coming in the air that night though
Phil's commitment to popped collars should not be overlooked

onemorebrando he’s one of the greatest musicians of all time singing one of the greatest songs and you’re commenting on his collar?? 🧐🧐🧐
Heartbreaking to see him getting old and ill and to see the struggle within him. But still insane how he pulls this off nevertheless. This song will be in my heart forever. And so is he
Even more heartbreaking that he caused nerve damage in his neck while performing for fans.
It’s aging 😂😂😂😂 duh that’s life

For people like this you just wish age wasn't a thing!!! These kinds of talents pffff they are special!!!
I heard Jimmy say that Questlove was nervous as hell throughout this performance because he wanted to get the drum part perfect. He nailed it though.
Megan Miller can hardly blame him haha you can be the best drummer on the planet and the pressure would still be the same. Well done to Quest for smashin it!

i love how you can hear the age in his voice. Makes it feel like such a more old timeless song
Franco Barrios agreed
Wow.. This is kinda weird I was just thinking that and hit the page down button to comment, legitimately thinking I would be the only one to feel that way and yours was the first comment I saw.
So many people complain when these singers don't sound the exact same.
I love the fact that he still went out there and sang live.
Also Questlove's smile was adorable.
I think I hear the lack of teeth more than the age.
I agree. I love the fact he sounds older. There are so many great singers who we don't get to experience them still singing. Some because they passed away and others because of health issues and some (if not many) because they know people will give then crap for not sounding the same . I know Phil is seen as one of the greatest drummers and for him to get up there still sing and let someone else take over one of his most iconic drumming parts is awesome.
Everyone sounds different when they're old and sing, that's just part of life but Phil is still good
You can tell Phil’s a drummer, the way his energy came out when the drums kicked in, he felt comfortable as soon as that fill started
Phil Collins is definitely one of the best musicians & singer/songwriter of the 20th & 21st Centuries! He deserves every award there is!
Thanks for liking, watching and listening to my songs, Thanks for your love♥️ and moral support. I hope you have been well entertained over the years?
Facts👍🏼
He is so creative too. Wrote the music and the lyrics.
@@ethanweeter2732 Of course he did! He should have already won a Kennedy Center Honor! He even produced Eric Clapton, Chaka Kahn, worked w/Sting & also produced & played the drums on album & toured w/Led Zeppelin lead singer after Jon Bonham passed. Then, Jason Bonham played for Phil. You should read his book, Not Dead Yet!
When you say fuck it, I'm going to rock it in a polo.

I mean no disrespect to Phil, as he is one of my all-time favorite artists, and I can't even imagine the struggles he has gone through with the nerve issues and learning to walk and drum again. That said, I think he's still got a little ways to go before his voice is in prime shape.
For me still one of the best songs of the 80's.
Thanks for liking, watching and listening to my songs, Thanks for your love♥️ and moral support. I hope you have been well entertained over the years?
What's amazing is when it first came out, it didn't come near the top of the charts. Maybe 19 or so. It became a better and more popular as the years have passed. It's absolutely timeless.
And PHIL COLLINS can sing that song and drum at the same time. He Very underated and rare talent musician !
Phil Collins is not underrated... to be one of the three musicians in history to sold over 150 million album units separately both as a band member and a solo artist (the other 2 is Michael jackson and Paul MCartney)... he is a LEGEND.

Fun fact, that drum kit was used especially for this song. Single heads, open bass used for the sound. Check out the 15" tom!!! Awesome. Definitely not his normal kit used on the show.

It's never the same if Phil isn't playing the drums himself! He does that signature drum roll of this song better than anybody else. He goes into beast mode when he takes up the sticks!
Siddharth Kamath He is feeling better, I am praying he picks the sticks back up.
Have you ever even heard of Questlove?
I'm sure he has. It's not the same kind of music though. People that listen to Phil Collins don't really care about The Roots.
The Roots are a great band, and I'm probably one of the few that enjoy both, but I am super psyched to see Phill back up there singing!
+Tyler Spunucious well I have always liked both, so you aren't correct
No song composed in the last 30 years comes anywhere close to delivering such a powerful build up of tension and explosive release as that iconic “In The Air Tonight” drum fill. Brings tears of joy to my eyes - and Questlpve nailed it with perfection.
Thank you Phil Collins and The Roots!!!

Love it how people actually screamed during the performance at 3:23
That's cuz Questlove was nervous but he nailed it!!
Tuddec Not something you hear very often during Tonight Show live performances.
I have watched this countless times and still shout out at that drumbeat!! Brotha Questlove, no one…NO ONE…can take that moment from you!!! That was epic & no doubt musically respected!! ICONIC!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
That drum line will forever be iconic no matter what decade u were born in
Questlove couldn't contain his excitement when he NAILED that drum intro! So adorable! Phil is a freakin legend.

That cymbal work was fricken amazing. Anyone that does Phil justice is great.
Och come on, you just can not screw this part! that would be a heavy sin
Its every drummers dream to h>t that part
You could say he'd been waiting for this moment for all his life.
Of course the drums are iconic here but this song would not be what it is without the amazing guitar playing of Daryl Struermer.
efrenmarquez8228 Totally agree. Until the drums come in it’s his guitar that’s iconic.
Agreed but this song, as a whole, is composed and written so well. So much build up to the drum solo of rage.
efrenmarquez8228 yeees! That guitar is sexy!
One of my favorite and underrated guitar players for sure
Absolutely said that from the beginning. That guitar is on point before the drums.
Getting that sign of approval from Phil is everything! Questlove hit it spot on!
One of the greatest voices ever. Saw many of his concerts in my 20's.This is my ultimate favorite song of ALL music for me. He struggles with debilitating back pain and it looks like he's really struggling with pain here. Facial expression, hand in back, tight grip on mic stand. His back pain is what made him stop touring. :( Last of his concert were done sitting in a chair. He is LEGENDARY!!!
Hello Theresa , how are you doing?
Stunning. And I'm betting Questlove just checked something off his bucket list. 😭❤️
The look on his face "Oh man, I didn't f--k it up!" You could tell he'd obviously been sweating this one. It's one of the most iconic drum fills of the 1980s, but no pressure!
Anyways, he nailed it.
mightymartianca Nah, I think it's THE drum fill of the 80s. Instantly fills you with 80s vibes and it's instantly timeless as well.
Yes I think so because I came.
Watching the show with the previous couple of episodes, Questlove was sweating buckets. He didn't want to jinx it. I'm sure you are correct, that was probably top on his bucket list.
I think Quest played it safe 'not' to fuck it up. You could tell he was a bit stiff for that part. Cant say I blame him.

God, that drop is just gorgeously done.
Watching because Questlove was SO nervous about this and it was kind of adorable.
(You nailed it, man!)
Catherine Dore With good reason, Collins is an amazing drummer. I would imagine that Genesis etc. had some amount of impact on his development of the craft.
I would be nervous as hell. Those drums are trademark of this song and performing it infront of the guy who wrote them... Hands down.
I would be too! Collins is a great drummer and an amazing song writer..... to have the chance to perform with this guy would be such an honor.....
Of course. That could have been the end of a career as a drummer to screw up that drum solo playing with Collins.

I didn't even sing along like I normally would. Was too busy enjoying how awesome he still sounds. Loved every minute of that!
Who is listening to this Song in 2024 ?
I'm
the way phil's voice has changed over the years is fascinating. it has a completely different character now that he's so much older, but it lends a totally fresh tone to the song & he still sings with a ton of control. he really understands how to use all the new textures his voice has taken on to tell the story of the lyrics. dude is still one of the best ever to do it.
finbeard well spoken.
This is a great comment!

Listen to the live aid version. That is a musical masterclass
finbeard He has adapted well, that's how you know he's not just a natural
This drumline will forever be iconic.
BEST DRUM SOLO EVER!!! It may be small but it is MIGHTY!!!
3:26 if you never air drum that fill you are lying in front of GOD and country. You were amazing Brother Quest🙏🏽🥃🤝🏾
I work straightening saw blades. Whenever we hear this song play a few us take two cut pieces and bang on the scrap drum.
INARGUABLY, one of the 80s music ICONs...and one of the TOP most iconic songs of that decade.
2 things:
-Quest love, much respect for doing the song justice and throwing in very subtle touches of funk in there. I can imagine 10 years down the road telling people he played the most iconic drum fill of all time.
-My absolute favorite thing about Phil Collins, he doesn't look like one of the biggest rock stars in the history of music, just looks like your best friends dad.
I used to work for a Production Company that provided stage, PA, and Lighting for Concerts. Around the year 2002 we were providing everything for a Clearchannel/Budweiser Summer Concert Series. We ordered a whole brand new Yamaha drum kit for Questlove. Very expensive kit. I un-boxed everything. The only drums he used was Kick drum, Snare, Hi hat, Floor tom, and 2 Symbols. That's all he used, and he was badass. He can do it with less.
What about Ricky Lawson's one note solo ?
Thank you Phil for bringing the 80's back by popping your collar!!!
One pop collar cool! Oh Lord!
Phil Collins never left the 80s/early 90s. Even when he was featured in a video game in the mid-2000s, he STILL somehow ended up being in the 80s. It's a gift.
had the pleasure to watch this genius three times live on different shows both solo and as well with Genesis. He's truely a legend...
Well, Jimmy certainly didn't need to fake any enthusiasm this time! His reaction was a perfect button on this freaking awesome performance. I honestly never expected anything on his show to make me tear up, but this did. Whole lotta nostalgia there, from 1981 up through the present, and it's awesome to see and hear that Phil's still got it.

Questlove played In the air tonight with Phil Collins and nailed legendarny intro. History happened!
Phil collins is so damn awesome bro. Sounds better than most the musicians that are half his age. 72 and still kicking ass. Questlove nailed the drums too
quest love was like 'nailed it'
If you watched the whole show, he WAS freaked a bit about blowing it...therefore the crowds' reaction when he did!
Fletcher Hatcher or you can just leave him to whatever what he wants his name to be. that works too.
Like "Prince", "Madonna", "Moby", "Fatboy Slim" or any other musician that has a stage name. All terrible, right?
You can also see some relief there too. That part is fast and DEMANDS precision and PERFECT timing and you GOT to FEEL it. If any of those components are missing, it's going to sound like a cheap imitation.
I Love how this song INSTANTLY transports me back to 1984 Miami VIce days. Damn, the 80's were the BEST!
I am agree with you. 80s was the best times, best girls, best music, best movies, best cars and people was better than today...

Age really got to him. You can feel it in his voice, the struggle to sing. He is slowly fading away and i will miss his music!
His music will never die. Hes a straight legend!
@Yankee Fan 11 years ago.. and it could be recorded even earlier. probably in 2004. he did a lot of live shows around that time.
He is doing very good for his age, a lot of other singers from that era don’t sound the same. Phil has mostly sound the same. Look at all rose for example, he’s still amazing but not what he was at all. Bon Jovi as well, but he just sounds different still very good.
Has nothing to do with his age. He hurt his back. It's gotten progressively worse since its appearance. If you don't know, all singers do know, if you hurt your back it's incredibly difficult to sing. You need to really puff up your lungs to push those notes, sustain those notes. You can't do that with a bad back. I've had it happen to me back when I was singing with a band. It's a nightmare.
@@heronpage3883 thanks for that comment. Having studied voice for a bit and being in a family of musicians (including vocalists) I understand the physical requirements to sing. It ain’t easy and injury can take a toll.
Questlove’s smile when he nailed it is priceless 👊
He may have some mild "old man voice" going on, but for the most part, Phil's still got it.
u hv a good ear. i meann good ears

His voice is so much stronger here than on his subsequent tour..
Phil Collins at the end like “I don’t do this anymore, but I did it for you Jimmy.”
Well he did until his final concert ever recently.
@@shahaffiq5860 Not in that key and not with that energy. His ability to do the tune in this key (already quite a bit lower than the OG) is long gone.
Got chills when Questlove hit that fill.cheers to the director and camera crew to pull that off live too.
At his consert in Norway in 2019, when this song started playing I literally cried my eyes out, so many memories of me and my dad when i was younger! yeah not many have had the chance to play as diversified as questlove. hes a real life teddy bear playing mad drums.
Was thinking the same. He is an accomplished musician and has played with numerous artists through the year, but personally, I was a drummer, doing the drumming bride in In the Air Tonight with Phil Collins performing would be some kind of dream come true.
I don't know ?uestlove, but I know his taste in music, and it's hard to imagine that playing the solo to this song while Phil Collins sings wasn't fulfilling a lifelong dream that he never imagined in a million years, despite all his success, could ever come true.

High five to Questlove for nailing the drums with Phil Collins singing!
Those Drums Were Waiting for All Their Life
No lip syncing, or auto tune and absolutely killing it. Raw talent right here. Doesn’t get any better than Phil.
I always knew Questlove was a great drummer, but wow! he NAILED this song. I re watched this again the other night, you can just see the relief on his face after the "big" drum part was over
That must have been an amazing experience for him. It does not get better than playing drums for Phil.
Chris Thomson even if it is not a complicated drum play, he was playing for Phil Collins... The man himself is a drummer, and with everyone expecting Questlove to play it as awesome as it should be, that's a lot of over-whelming peer pressure. To screw up even the slightest, would mean brand nation of every low class name for a long time.
Chris Thomson I think it's more about
that he was the first to do it and he has been very unwell.
This is not like some " on / off " thing, " doing it, or not doing it "
you realize the kick drum is also heavily involved in the ' fill ' 3:25
The double kick drum with the toms, you can do it with a single drum stick, but to get the feel with the kick drum into the fill, and doing it as tightly as Questlove did, is actually very hard.
you seem to believe that a avarage drummer with 10 years experience, would be able to play this with all the nuances that were in this performance. you obviously know very little of music.
maybe at some point, you will also start to notice the subtle nuances that sets apart mediocre musicians from good musicians.
Yeh, I've played the drums since I was nine years old and can confirm it's really not that hard. (Even with the kick) Not that I'm dissing Phil or Questlove, got mass respect for both.
Where's Mike Tyson?

Guillermo Giron Over your head.
This is amazing. It looks like Phil took a break from lounging at home to rock this song for a few minutes.
wow. amazing performance every time best artist of all time hands down.
It's amazing how great Phil sounds after all these years :)
Amy I know right?! It’s like no time has passed at all!
The great one's don't age
Playing GTA Vice Stories was the first time I heard that song. It was like a flashback. He is a legend
Alejandro Méndez well he actually in the game too in a few missions and sing in the game
First time i heard it was on the Cadbury ad with the gorilla playing the drums.
Old times.......... :(
Same bro
awevo yo lo jugue en PSPy salir la rola completa, incluso sale el Phil en nade las misiones
I love how he has his shirt collar up like we did in the 80s.
Now, this HE is a LEGEND and an ICON. He has earned that title, not what people call today, people that have been around for a couple of years and can't sing like that on their best day. They're icon, legend, diva, and queen. Those adjectives are earned and not be given away like candy.
Best song ever
I loved this song, all my life! Then on the night of of February 10th 2018 my wife of 28 years died in my arms, from a blood clot. The ambulance came and took her away. They had worked on her for over an hour. It was a cold and wet night. I got in our car and headed to the hospital, this song was playing over the radio. It now, makes me feel guilty. I was a nurse, and I should have seen the signs of her condition. I’m alone with my guilt. We had been planning a special 30th anniversary. January 12th 2020 I spent the day with my wife next to her. I still have the $100.00 bottle of champagne. Phil if you read this, thank you so much. I have been a fan of yours and Geniuses since the 70’s. You are a gift to this world. Thank you 🙏
Sorry for the loss of your wife.
Sorry for your pain xx
im sorry for your loss, please don’t blame yourself
Sorry for your hurt. Hope time can help you heal
Let go of the guilt, you did not cause it nor foresee it!
Didn't realize Quintin Tarantino played keyboards for the Roots.
haha I was about to post that
lol
lol watched it twice ...yup nice pick up ....classic song ..love when the drums kick in..
watch the clip for "Sussudio" he makes an appearance at the beginning on the bar
Hahahahahahaha
For his age I think Phil did an amazing job. Some say he was not as good. I say he sang great and as a songwriter myself, I will always want to hear the songwriter sing his song more than anyone else. Great job Phil. This song is so great, I now added it to my set list of Karaoke songs I sing. Everyone claps when the drums come in when I sing this song! Cheers!
I still get goosebumps when the drum kicks in.
03:26 - BEST QUESTLOVE MOMENT EVER! :)
Imagine how many times he played that as a kid and finally getting to do it in front of literally the whole world
Phil Collins looks so goofy, in a good way. Like, he doesn't look like one of the most influential artists of all time. He looks like a guy my dad would invite to a backyard bbq and only drink Hard Lemonade. Love this man!
That drumroll still gives me goosebumps!!
Phil turned towards the drummer and acknowledged his efforts... that must be a very humbling moment for him... as it was for me. That's the best recommendation any contemporary drummer can wish for his musical CV!
Thanks Jimmy Fallon for thinking about this.👍🇬🇾
Thanks for liking, watching and listening to my songs, Thanks for your love♥️and moral support. I hope you have been well entertained over the years?
I don't know how anybody else feels, but I LOVE the way Phil Collins' singing voice has matured as an elderly man. He sings In The Air Tonight with slightly different set of emotional flow throughout, compared to original performances, which I think gives it a whole new dynamic... again, adding to its timelessness. Excellent!
I don’t think he’s elderly - There are marathon runners in their 90s.
Age is only a number and its relative.
He did awesome here.
Agree
Makes us realise we have gotten older too 😙 where did be it go?
@curragh 42 Yet he's still singing in the same key
You can tell how good a drummer is by the faces he makes. Questlove is focusing on the beats you can tell that by the expressions on his face, when he gets through the hard part he smiles. He is a true Drummer.
What hard part? Haha. The genius of this song is in the simplicity, any one taking drum lessons for a few months can play this.
@@beastmry I think it was more playing an iconic song with the guy who wrote it right there.
At 3:32 Questlove was saying “Whew😅.....Thank God 🙏🏾I didn’t fuck it up 🤗!!!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Even though he is a living legend his damn self!!!! That just shows you how fuckin legendary Phil Collins is 🎤🎵!!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Oh, wow, the pressure on him to do the drum solo. Awesome
