Doom 3: BFG Edition Any% Speedrun in

- This was done as a proper single segment run, no quicksaves or autosaves.
Played mostly on 120 FPS, but for some levels I switched to 60 because of bugged physics.
The FPS is displayed in the top right.
Still some mistakes in the run, and of course some messy parts. There always have to be.

It's been about 3 years since my last WR on UA-cam for Doom 3 and recently I had an itch to try and see if 54:XX was even possible. As it goes in speedrunning, for a long time I thought it was not humanly viable, at least not for me.
But then I decided to try and actually dive in and see how much can I optimize everything. I went through all the levels and tried to break my old habits and relearn everything from scratch and question every jump, every shot and every ammo or health pickup and take out anything that is costing me time.
Then I slowly started playing individual levels and practicing them thoroughly. After it felt alright, I started grinding runs, and I got to admit, this run took a while to do. That made it much more satisfying in the end.
PS I made the game look as close as possible to the original and now I must ask you,
where are your "too bright for Doom 3" comments now? 😛

the possibility of a 54 has been nagging me for years now. doom 3 unfortunately doesn't have runners. such a nice speedgame as well.

Hey! I'm a huge fan of doom 3, and I was wondering, how would one go about learning the ropes of speedrunning it?
I am glad to hear that.
If you wanna get into Doom 3 speedrunning, I will tell you what the OG runner Corpseflesh told me when I was starting: "Start with Lost Mission, which is the shortest campaign, then work your way up to the slightly longer Resurrection of Evil and then to the main campaign, which is the longest and thus hardest.

There is no tutorial video for Nightmare difficulty, so if you wanna do that, there are also runs you can watch for Soul Cube routing, either mine of Corpseflesh's.

Doom 3 has strafe jumping and bunny hopping. It is mostly the same as in Quake 3 / Quake Live / Quake Champions so if you find any tutorial on how to do movement in those games, you can use it to learn the movement in Doom 3. I recommend this one. Rapha talks about "VQ3" movement, and that is the only one you need to know.

There is only 1 secret early weapon and it is the early BFG in Alpha Labs 1 and it is a part of this speedrunning tutorial.

Doom 3 is quite simple so there is no quick swapping or animation cancelling or any of the modern Doom games features. Just hit your shotgun shots, and if you are not sure they will hit, use the chainsaw. Abuse grenades as much as you can since they mostly instakill Imps and similar smaller demons, and also keep in mind that for a lot of demons you can hit headshots that do double the damage.

mostly movement speed and graphics. bfg is faster, lighter, better optimized for newer hardware and you have the flashlight on your shoulder instead of having it as a separate weapon. i made a video that explains the entire speedrun and in it i touch on the differences between games. i will upload it in the future at some point.
How can you skip cutscenes. I have bfg edition as well. I press every button but can't skip
its modded version i think its called rbdoom3bfg or something like that

I will soon upload a video that explains the Doom 3 Speedrun. Most of the run is just good execution, but e.g. the shotgun spread is RNG, enemy movement in Enpro and such. There are more examples but not can't think of any rn.

everything except live streams on youtube is pre-recorded. this was never streamed live. reckon i would have cleaned up some parts if i was really splicing. or maybe it's a double bluff, you'll never know.

How'd you skip the intro in BFG Edition?
I skip cutscenes by using a sourceport called RBDOOM3BFG. Gameplay stays the same, just makes cutscenes skippable. However, I can't skip the intro since it is not a in-game cutscene but a video that plays. That is why the run basically starts at 28.4 seconds.

honestly, for a first playthrough, that is probably faster than average. doom 3 has a lot of areas to explore and pdas to skim through and such. it is a fun game to play slowly and quickly 🙂

There is a trigger to end the level there accidentally left by the devs. Works in the origin game as well. Try it if you have the game 🙂
