    You don't need to apologize for your "dirty" dryer. So many how-to videos show a dude working on a BRAND NEW unit! Who wants to see that? Anyone can fix a brand new unit that's working fine! Nice to see someone working on what most people have at home. You covered a lot of points that other videos don't even mention. Thank you!

    Update - Complete success. Put everything back together and the new radiant sensor fixed the no heat problem. The thorough cleaning helped improve airflow, so it is drying better than ever. Most importantly the wife is very happy. I only had two small screws left over but it seems to be running fine without them, lol.
    Many thanks for your great video. You were the only one I found that bothered to explain there were differences in how to repair a front lint filter dryer like mine and a top lint filter. I wasted a lot of time trying to get the back off my dryer since all the videos I originally found were for top lint filters.
    Well, my gas dryer is a 37-year-old Kenmore. It has never been serviced in those 37 years, so you've got nothing on me with piles of lint inside. One day my wife told me the dryer was not drying at all. First checked that it was actually tumbling, and that we had good that air flow from the dryer vent outside. All that was good. When I checked the clothes, I found that they were cold. I checked all the things you described and the only part that failed the continuity test was the thing you said was very unlikely to fail - the flame or radiant sensor. Just ordered one on Amazon so hopefully that will fix the problem. Like you, my coils failed the continuity test; however, they did show resistance. The resistance was over 1000 ohms, so I wonder if the continuity test does not work because the resistance it too high. Just a thought.
    One tip I will pass along. Take pictures of the parts you test so you can look up the part numbers online. For example, my thermal fuse was next to the dryer thermostat, but I had a high limit thermostat where your thermal fuse was located. The only way I really knew for sure that I found everything I needed to test was looking up the part numbers. You will need the part numbers to make sure you are ordering the proper replacement parts also. I also videoed each part I tested and described the results of the test. These can also be used to make sure all the wires are hooked up correctly when done.
    One other tip I did not do. Take pictures and/or videos as you take your unit apart. This will make sure everything goes back where it belongs, and you reassemble in the right order. Since I did not do this and since the project has dragged on for over a week, I hope I remember how to reassemble everything. I also did not mark which was the front and back of the drum so hopefully it makes no difference, or I can figure it out. Update - The belt on the drum was not in the center so I was able to figure out which was front and back by measuring where the pulley is from the back wall.
    By the way, I checked my lint filter with water even before I found your video and not a drop of water would pass through it even though it looked clean. I just scrubbed it in water with a standard brush we use to clean off dishes in the kitchen. Now water flows freely through the lint screen. We used dryer sheets for years but switched wool dryer balls years ago. Much healthier and better for the environment. Apparently, they are also better for the lint screen.

BUT, your video was edited for efficiency, and contained tons of excellent info on small things people don't usually include in DIY fix videos. The lighting, camerawork and instructions were top notch. Thanks for this man.

    I recently repaired my dryer that had an error code that would stop the dryer every 10 minutes, so I replaced all the heat sensors that was recommended, it didn't fix it. Then I replaced the heating element itself and that fixed it. The heating element was still heating the dryer but one heating coil was bad causing the shut down. I ordered all parts online and watched videos on UA-cam for support. These repairs anyone can do and save a fortune.

    Great video. Replaced my 2 gas valve coils yesterday which solved my problem of intermittent heating. Also drilled a half inch hole on my Maytag front panel which allowed me to see the flame and the igniter operating with the front door cover on. For some reason my model didn’t have a view port. A small grommet covers the hole now but allows for easy troubleshooting. My advice to anyone if you’re having intermittent heating on gas dryer is to replace the 2 coils. They’re super cheap and super easy and pretty much universally standard. Although they may appear within specifications on the bench it’s when they’re operating where they get to be problematic. Don’t be afraid of the aspect of them being on the gas valve. You’re not doing anything that would expose you to gas or anything like that. Thanks for the video

    After having accomplished 1. & 2., your video was the most helpful. What really helped me is 1. having watched a UA-cam video telling me how a gas dryer works, then, 2. viewing a video that explains how to take my dryer apart (state of the art Samsung), and finally 3. watching several videos like yours . Yours is the best! It teaches one, sequentially, where to find the model number of the unit, clear trouble shutting technique to find the problem, the name of the replacement parts, & how to replace needed parts. Your video in the 3rd category is the vest. It is very comprehensive, to the point (without needles chit-chat), & the most instructive (you make a wonderful teacher or mechanical engineer). Thank you for taking the time to pass on your knowledge to the world-community! Hugs to you! Next you see your mom (or whomever brought you up), give her (or that person) a big hug, for me, for having raised such a, NO NONSENSE, mechanically high IQ & wonderful person.

    So my dryer kept shutting down after running for a minute.
    I tested all the thermo-switches and sensors but everything checked out all right.
    Roaming through the dryer videos here, I came across yours where you showed the lent screen water test.
    I pored water onto the screen and BINGO, not a drop would pass through.
    I tried scrubbing it with soapy water and a brush but still just a little water dripped through.
    I figured that wasn't enough so I took it outside and sprayed Brake Cleaner front and back then let dry 30 seconds.
    I repeated this front, back, 30 seconds dry.
    I then took a wire brush to it and poof into powder the glaze went.
    I now have no problems.
    My dryer is 23 years old and had so much lent built up in it that some of it had been burning already on the coil heating tube so it may have saved our home and lives that I opened it.
    Thx 4 that great information on the lent screen.
    We no longer use softeners.
    P.S.
    Never go to bed with your dryer running or you may never see tomorrow.

      Ok, guys, You can do this! you can also avoid having to do this in the first place too! how? by understanding that the number one reason dryers thermostats and thermal fuses blow, is because of heat management.
      Clogged or restricted exhaust vent airflow is the most frequent cause of thermal fuse blowing. Check your lint screen for lint or a build-up of debris that could be inhibiting airflow through the dryer. Wash the lint screen with water and a nylon brush and then thoroughly dry it and replace it in the lint screen housing, Check the flexible vent hose behind the dryer meaning take it lose and check it for clogs and kinks clean everything. Also, check the exhaust vent ducts system to the outside of your home for restrictions, you'll be surprised by how much lint can get clogged in the hose and vent areas, If you do the once every Spring you will most likely avoid having trouble with your dryer. What you will be doing, in a way is giving your Dryer Lungs a thorough cleaning so it can breathe right, giving your fuses no reason to blow because its air is not being restricted. 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours is all it takes.

Tip: if you put too many clothes in your dryer at once it to can cause the dryer to stop without finishing, not heat, make a ticking sound, etc. I was about to take my dryer apart until my girlfriend said: babe you put too many clothes in the dryer it could do that. I went downstairs and took 50 percent of them out and boom works wonders without, having to take the dryer apart. So my advice not taking anything away from word of advice tv. Wouldn’t you know it came in handy again. Turns out is was a bad thermal fuse. HOUSTON WE HAVE IGNITION!!! Thanks for detailed video. Ended up needing a real good cleaning to boot. Bottom of lint screen tube was pretty full. Also found $8.00 in change inside dryer under drum on floor. Lol

    I had bought another used dryer on OfferUp after my initial dryer stopped heating up. I thought this is probably trash now lol. But since my used purchase was ALSO not heating up I looked for a video like this. Great step by step instructions, taught me how to test with multimeter, gave me probabilities on what the issues were. I purchased a whole belt, pulley, and wheel kit to rid of the noise of my first one alone with a new fuse (burnt out). Fixed beautifully. Only needed to replace heating coil on other dryer. 2 fixed dryers!! Reselling the one I purchased and keeping my old one. Thanks again.

    This is a great video. I like the explanations on how components work instead of just the steps involved. I coupled this video with one specific to my brand of dryer just for the location of components - and the pair worked great. One suggestion for the guy in the video (sorry, I couldn't find your name) would be to show or say what each component is connected to so it would be easier to find if the location is different in my dryer. For example, "one wire for the thermo fuse is connected to the *** and the other to the ***".

I've had my ducts professionally cleaned from the dryer to the exit of the house. It ran great for a load but now it will run but won't heat. I'm about to burn it in my backyard. Dryers aren't that hard yet I'm defeated.

  • @GLF426
    @GLF426 2 роки тому +1

    I just came here to correcta little info in this video. Your thermal fuses and hi limit thermostats are almost always on your burner tube or heater housing. Not where your filter is. For example, the electric version of the model dryer he is working on, the thermal fuse and hi limit is in the back on top where the electric heater is. Not in the front where the filter is. Further, the white pieces in the video are thermal fuses like he said but in all electric machines, if this is bad the dryer won't start at all. In gas machines he is correct in that it will run but not heat. Keep in mind those white fuses are found only (to the best of my experience and knowledge) in whirlpool or whirlpool built machines such as older Kenmore, Roper, newer Maytag and Amana.
    Not knocking the guy. Informative video for sure... but just a minor correction

    Thanks for this very comprehensive guide. My dryer has been taking a long time to dry and after completely dismantling the thing and probing all the parts I unfortunately haven't found a smoking gun. Hopefully simply having disassembled everything and putting it back together will have set something right...
    A note about continuity testers: continuity on a multimeter is typically used to detect shorted electrical paths. Meters are designed to beep only for very small resistances, in the order of < 10 ohm. Your continuity tester didn't beep when you measured the coils because the resistance reading was too high.

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  5 років тому +5

      I have had a few times where I took a dryer all apart, found nothing wrong, put it back together and it would start working. Another thing I have seen is gas dryers heating for only the first 15-20 minutes and after a while the gas valve coils just stop opening up the gas valve. Sat there and watched the dryer dry twice before and caught them doing that. So now if a customer tells me it takes it a long time to dry and I am not finding anything wrong, I just go ahead and replace the gas valve coils. Haven't been getting any call backs.
      Thank you for explaining the difference between continuity and resistance testing. I finally know what the difference between the two is besides one beeping and the other one not. ;)

    • @sswpp8908
      @sswpp8908 5 років тому +1

      Thanks for the suggestion. Do the gas valve coils make a clicking noise when they activate?

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  5 років тому +2

      They do make a clunk sound when they open the gas valve. If you have a little sight glass opening on the bottom of your dryer, or a kick panel, you can take it off and just watch the burner. If you see the ignitor glowing but gas valve not opening, then those coils should be replaced.

    • @tomc3542
      @tomc3542 5 років тому +3

      @@WordofAdviceTV Agreed. The gas valve coils are so inexpensive, whereas service calls are not so inexpensive. If I have to open up the machine for work such as replacing the igniter and I suspect that the coils haven't been touched in years, I readily replace the gas valve coils, as I almost always have a set with me. I think of it as preventive maintenance rather than repair.

    • @tomc3542
      @tomc3542 5 років тому +3

      @@sswpp8908 That little click from the valve solenoid when the igniter is at full temperature is the key to tell you when the gas valve opens. If you don't hear it, then replace the coils. If you still don't hear a click after replacing the coils, then it's the gas valve. In my effort to maintain laundry equipment for my few rental properties, making sure to always have a new set of gas valve coils and a spare igniter on hand has given me a good shot at a fast fix for the most common problems.
      Cleaning the inside of the machine is a part of the job. For that, I carry a powerful hand-held vacuum, a refrigeration coil brush (just because it can get into confined spaces), an automotive detail brush and a cheap 2-inch paint brush too. I admire the capabilities of a good appliance, and giving it a good cleaning from time-to-time is a matter of giving it proper respect and encouragement to keep on doing its good work.

Two screw got loose on the lint screen housing that connects to the blower wheel and a ton of lint was covering the entire inside. Lots of lint was black from the igniter section. Also our dryer started making lots of noise witch I think was the screws missing and vibrating the housing. Clean all the lint from the lint screen housing and all the inside of the dryer and now noise gone and dryer heating finally! Like new thank you again! P.s. Pretty good dryer back in the day ... but I always preferred the whirlpool design myself (even though whirlpool owns Maytag nowadays). The most common problem with this design by far was the blower wheel, The rear drum rollers second ... then of course, the burner coils . Every once in awhile I’d come across an ignitor with a burn spot on it . Other than that , not a bad dryer at all . That hi-limit on the tunnel , I might’ve replaced a handful of times in the 35 years or so of fixing appliances... and I’ve fix a hell of alot of appliances !!!

    Hi Jay.
    I bought a Speed Queen dryer in 1979 and have had it now for 42 years.
    That includes serving a family of 5 and raising 3 children to adulthood.
    Recently it stopped heating, but the drum still rotates at normal speed and the exhaust blower still works.
    But no heat.
    With my multimeter I checked the heater element and all 3 thermal sensors and they all tested good.
    I think the problem may be with a faulty relay located inside or on the main motor.
    I haven't tested the relay yet because it requires more disassembly to access it.
    I think the purpose of the relay is to inhibit the heating circuit if the motor is not spinning?
    But the motor IS spinning but no heat.
    Could you please comment on this?
    I still have the schematic for this machine and can upload it if you're not familiar with this relay.
    Thank you.
