Highlight of my Saturday morning, going to work with the savyest cutter I know, again thank you Bjarne for sharing your awesome world with us,takes me back home,Dan from Washington state
You done a awesome job with that old trash of tree been watching your videos for a while like your work my Dad was a logger many years I had a taste of logging all my life i was born 1950 it was hard but i loved the life
You are certainly a master at your craft. I remember my dad who is 80 yrs today. 50 yrs ago cutting trees with pro mac 880 or 1000 can't remember which they were heavy big saws. He still cuts firewood for himself. Thanks for the hard work
Wow. That's all I can say. Saw? Little dinky 572 prolly was the right one for tossing & carrying things out there in the crush zone. Certainly got past that "40 second" Autotune Self tune time on some of those cuts! THANK you for doing these videos. :)
Bjarne, When our Son watches your videos with us, he always marvels at the size of trees you fall at some of the places you work. He said what we do is like falling toothpicks compared to that and while that's true to a certain extent its not always the case. He says you make it look so easy....Well after explaining that the knowledge and experience you have is what sometimes makes it look easy, but in all actuality its anything but easy because when one is internally rotted like a lot of those big red and yellow cedars are that get that old, they also become very dangerous sometimes. Well this block were working in now and will finish up this spring ( he says with fingers crossed) there are some really big old growth Ponderosa and Spruce at the northwest edge of this block and we hiked into them yesterday to get good survey of what was to come in a couple weeks and there are a couple 3-4 big ( for here anyways) dying snags in there that are close to the biggest we have dropped here so its going to provide me the absolute perfect opportunity to show our Son and the other 2 young guys on our crew just exactly how what we have spent YEARS learning....is anything but easy. Take Care Buddy. R.C.Hill
Hi Randy. I may make it look easy sometimes but it took years of practice and mistakes to get there. Those full length snags can be quite dangerous with those rotten tops. It’s nice to hear you guys are keeping busy 🤙
Excellent vid as always! I like that you include when "stuff" happens and you gotta roll with it.... Not a faller out there that it all goes perfect every time. (had my share of awww @%$% me! kind of days back in the day cutting shake and shingle on the Oly NF) Keep the videos coming and work safe brother!
Stihl down, I thought you were going to wear your rope out getting Husky started. Still like the Stihl, was what I broke in on, Fellers got Stihl, Buckers got Husky, F&G knew what to give us to make them $.
@@BjarneButler I'm waiting to see how the California loggers do with now 2 stroke ban in 2025, instead of gas, batteries, maybe you've seen a "lectric bush" , guess I never crawled around the ,"Devils club" looking for one, that will be interesting, ask Donny if he's seen one. LOL
Hellova job ol friend…I’m from Ky and wonder how hard an oak would be to face up and fall in that spot…..that ol cedar seems to cut easy..our big whit oaks, hickory, and one of the hardest I’ve cut..pecan keep you honest on yer filing game and you better have cut a few and know what depth to set rakers or yer in for a long hard day…too much chatter will wear your hands out…too little burn bars n chains up and never get any down…I had rich build my 394 12yrs or so ago and it’s a monster with serious power…eat my new 395 and rival the big 880 I just bought last yr…beautiful country and I hope to visit bc before I go..
Ya cedars are very soft trees. They cut quite easily, the harder the wood the better your filing must be. Especially when cutting with a long bar. It’s a lot easier with a ground chain but when hand filing it takes some experience to be proficient at keeping that saw cuttin straight. I always make sure to touch up the chain throughout the day
@@BjarneButler me too. Even when I used blade on weedeater cuttin row. Kept flat file in back pocket. Them boys would bend over with saw where I would stand up and cut upto4” softwood with 8 tooth stihl grass blade. It for gas, phone, and powerline
Probably not much lumber but on cedar they still send in most of the pieces to make shakes out of. Anything they think will make some shingles gets a truck ride. I've seen loads that didn't even look like firewood
On a big tree that's dead and shatters when it hits the ground - is that just all garbage making room for replanting? Or do they try to salvage any of the cedar?
Alot of old red cedars have a decent amount of butt rot, this trees still alive, the fungus that usually does this in them would rarely actually kill the tree. usually only really shows up in the bottom 10m~ of the log, so most of the wood above is still worth good coin. As for the butt section, this one's worthless, but if there are pieces that are good wood and long enough to mill (12ft of solid wood is the minimum most mills want) they will still pick them. Essentially just becomes a smaller log, value is measured in board feet, so if it's good wood and it's millable it doesn't matter. Red cedar is worth it's Weight in gold
Can a tree like that be used for any timer related products, or is it just ending up as wood pulp? Considering how much rot and dead wood there was in it.
Cedar is very valuable so they’ll take some pretty small pieces of wood. There’s a local mill that now has a special joiner that can take these small cedar pieces and make bigger beams
So I am curious , the first tree you said disregard the markings on the tree..the letter L stands out quite plainly ..so did they get you to go in and take the leave trees after the block was down ? Some shake slabs there for sure .
@@BjarneButler ok thanks Bjarne . So all the old veteran cedars in that cut block were left and then taken down after. Kind of weird . I guess they must have been in a grey area concerning the size , because there is new cutting regs concerning the big old ones. Looked like a lot of fence rail material . Or maybe they wanted the fir etc to be laid out to act as a cushion for the big old vets .the value of cedar is pretty up there . Is your 592 as smooth running as the 572?
Why do they make you fall those big rotten ones? Wouldn’t it be more profitable and safer to leave them. The wood on those big cedars always breaks apart and looks punky, no? Do they use any of it?
@@BjarneButlerI’ve seen some with this flap on them I’m guessing let more chips out easily also you used your stuff yet they should’ve got there by now

I flipped out when that rotten cedar jumped back upright ! I was wowed at the bounce ..nice work.

wow 😉another great video 👍 as always stay safe !!😉
Dam you earned your pay on that one that was cool as hell
Wow...ridiculous. Something tells me they left those for the expert. Great work!

So how much usable wood did you actually make from those old trees?
a lot lol more than what got wasted, that's for sure.

In Colorado, we are choking on smoke from Alberta. If you were a real friend, Bjarne, you'd go log that country instead of letting it all burn up.
What kinda cell or camera you using absolutely awesome scenary views
Bjarne you need a teloscopic pole with a Mirror on it to look around those Big trees to see where your other cuts are. Halifax Nova Scotia
Bjarne do you have a grinder and you square grind your chain in the evenings?

Cedar is very valuable so they’ll take some pretty small pieces of wood. There’s a local mill that now has a special joiner that can take these small cedar pieces and make bigger beams
So does that red mark on the tree indicate which way they want it to fall? I thought that was up to the guy doing the actual cutting?
whats the smallest guy you've seen who could manage a 90 cc saw?
So I am curious , the first tree you said disregard the markings on the tree..the letter L stands out quite plainly ..so did they get you to go in and take the leave trees after the block was down ? Some shake slabs there for sure .
Yes that was originally marked as a leave tree.

How old would such a big tree be?
Not as old as it may seem. That is a large 2nd growth WRCedar, not an old growth. [from what I can see]
Maybe 200-250+ y/o
the last tree was older than the first one. The deeper the grooves/striations in the bark/cambium, the older the cedar.
