  • The 8” jointed DepthRaider by Joe Bucher Outdoors is an outstanding musky lure and in this episode, I go into great detail on when, why and how I like to use it to increase my catching consistency.
    The equipment I like to use for throwing and working the jointed DepthRaider is St. Croix’s Legend Elite musky rod: LEM86MHF. The 8’6” rod length is perfect for enabling the musky angler to make super wide figure-8’s and also helps to throw the jointed DR a “country mile” even into a stiff breeze. I also like the 8’6” rod length because it does not fatigue the forearm and shoulder as you work the jointed DR over a long hunt on the water. The medium-heavy power is also an important component of the rod because it provides plenty of power to figure-8 the jointed DR with the water resistance due to its large diving lip.
    One situation I particularly like to throw the jointed DR in is at night and in fact, the jointed DR is my number one night fishing producer or all-time for muskies. The “broken body” design on the jointed lure provides added noise and increased vibration that helps muskies “feel” and locate the lure in total darkness.
    Outside of night fishing, there is no doubt that the jointed DR is absolutely deadly during the late-fall period. Once turnover is complete and water temperatures have dropped below 57 degrees, the jointed DR really comes into its own as a mega-producer for musky action. In particular I have found great success trolling the lure by bouncing it off of the bottom. Rocks, wood, gravel and all other forms of structure are great options to work the jointed DR around. Find the boat speed and length of line that works for your body of water at that particular time of year and you will be hoisting muskies out of the net for photos! The jointed DR is also one of my favorite lures to fish over rock structure, especially during dreaded cold fronts.

      Can you effectively add weight to the 8" jointed Depth Raider Lead tape to get it deeper when trolling or will that mess up the action?@@MuskyMastery

      Dave, you could certainly add weight to the jointed DR (and that could help it run deeper for casting) but for getting the lure to run deeper while trolling it would be easier to accomplish that by letting more line out.

    These are monster fish but looks like it needs to be very cold to catch. No musky where I’m at! Time to go fishing!

      Thanks for the watch and the comment dude! It doesn't necessarily have to be super cold to catch muskies.... we catch them during the summer and warmer months as well. But during the late-fall period, you get a shot at muskies that are likely at the heaviest body weight they will be at all year long. So for that reason... we really push ourselves to fish in the super cold elements. The payoff can be HUGE :)

    Thanks for the video. I will definitely be buying one of these for the upcoming season. What is your favorite color for this lure and have you found that color matters since it runs so deep?

      @MuskyMastery  5 років тому +1

      Sam, absolutely and really glad you enjoyed the video!! My favorite color in both the jointed and straight 8” DR is “sucker” and I’ve had success trolling and casting this color. I have caught muskies trolling all different color DR’s and yes, I think that when the lure is running that deep I am not sure color is much of a factor but - who knows! Sometimes I get in a good groove with a certain color on a given season and I just keep the momentum going!

    Awesome video... comments aren't showing up so I'm not sure if someone else has asked this...can you give a quick run down of line length for trolling at 10, 15, 20, 25 feet of water? And Is it the same for the straight DR?

      Ben, thanks dude! I am really glad you enjoyed the video!! As a starter check out this trolling depth chart for the 8” DR’s. I have found that my running depths are about the same for both the jointed and straight model. The chart link below shows the running depths you will get on 80 lb Beast Braid at around 3.5 mph. Hope this helps and keep the questions coming!

      Amity, thanks dude!!! Much appreciated! Yes, I love throwing the jointed DR on the Legend Tournament Musky 86MHF St. Croix. I have also used that rod to troll too and it works great! Thanks for watching and please keep the questions coming!

    Can you maybe clarify some trolling data? ie How much line you have to let out to achieve a certain depth? Thanks

    • @MuskyMastery
      @MuskyMastery  4 роки тому +1

      Absolutely! Please check out this link to Musky360. It has the complete trolling chart that I use for 80 lb test Beast Braid and the amount of line I have out for trolling at 3 mph. You will have to tweak it a little yourself as you dial things in. Let me know if this helps!
