  • For anyone who has spent a significant amount of time chasing muskies the following scenario is ALL too common: you’re on your favorite body of water ready to sling bucktails and topwater over your most consistent weed reefs and shorelines but.... they’re DEAD!!!?? Zero activity on spots that have produced time and time again! Now what?
Fortunately, I believe that I have found an answer to this frustrating problem: leave the weeds and hit rock structure! Yes, it’s actually that simple! When the weed bite is dead on your favorite body of water the complete opposite type of cover, hard-bottom, rocky structure, seems to hold active muskies!
There are many reasons why I believe that rock structure produces under these conditions but regardless, it is important that you take the cue and make sure you switch tactics to score before the before the sun sets.
And when it comes to the style of lure to use over hard-bottom structure there is arguably no better choice than a crankbait. Simply put, crankbaits dominate on the rocks and all you have to do is choose a lure which runs at a depth complimentary to the height of the structure you’re fishing.
Technique-wise it is not very challenging as you will see in this video. Whatever crankbait you choose to use just make sure to “click-and-tick” your way along the bottom! This means, run the diving lip of your crankbait into the rocky structure subtly as your work the structure. Making this special “contact with the cover” will produce strikes from muskies in a neutral or even negative mood.
And lastly, ALWAYS remember to finish each cast with a quality figure-8, even with a deep-diving crankbait, such as the jointed DepthRaider. Although you do not see follows very easily on these lures muskies ready follow them to the boat and a well executed figure-8 can help to trigger these reluctant fish into striking.

Great video Released in late Oct. Wishing for nice summer days like that. Every time I watch you net a fish alone, I learn something regarding playing and being patient when it is boat side. Seems that taking your time is better than rushing and horsing a fish not ready into the net. Keep em coming

Dave, thanks as always brother! I am doing a seminar tonight at the Lombard sportsmans club and one of my topics is.... fighting a musky properly and learning from past mistakes... Should make for an interesting topic amongst some other cool stuff!

SG thanks dude!!! Yes, I think deep figure-8 strikes on DepthRaiders are by far my favorite strikes of all time when it comes to boatside strikes!

Always look forward to Thursday and a new show. Absolutely love the DR and SR. This was great because if you look close at your retrieve you can see the rock bumps. Good to know 8’6” Saint Croix is way to go. Another good one Buddy!

Scott, thanks dude!!! Yes, no doubt St. Croix is the way to go! I love the LEM86MHF for crankbait fishing because it is so lightweight and the 8'6" is just a little shorter than the 9' and makes it a little easier on the shoulder and forearm over a 14+ hour day of cranking!

In your opinion what is the best kind of layout for a Muskie boat? I noticed you have the hand tiller style. Having the steering wheel takes up space that instead could be used for another person to fish.

Rich, I absolutely love tiller boats for the very reason you mentioned.... the saved space for anglers, gear etc... They are excellent when it comes to trolling for making hairpin accurate turns too and with the new hydraulic steering setups, you can rig tillers with up to 250 hp motors!!!

Hi Chas. Great video. I’ll be making my first trip to northern WI next summer. Can you give me a list of the best lakes to find a musky?

Brad, thanks again for the watch and comment dude!!! I would recommend starting on the Eagle River chain... an amazing body of water that pumps out numbers of good sized fish and plenty of water to explore with the family on a mid-day or sunset cruise! Tight lines!
