ShallowRaider Beatdown! Catching Muskies on Minnow Baits When they WON'T STRIKE!

  • You’ve got the muskies dialed in on your favorite body of water and now you’re ready to launch the boat with your buddies and put a beat-down on the muskies with some classic run-and-gun bucktail and topwater fishing! This sounds awesome and it certainly has the makings for an epic day of musky hunting!
But after a couple hours of hitting your “go-to,” prime spots with nothing to show for your efforts, the morale in the boat is beginning to dwindle. What happened? You have been catching and seeing muskies on these spots consistently all week long and now… nothing!
The answer to this problem might be easier than you think! The muskies actually haven’t gone anywhere and they are still right there hanging on those prime spots! But due to some weather and barometric changes they are not actively feeding or chasing you must find a way to trigger reaction strikes!
One of my all-time favorite lures to trigger reaction strikes from stubborn muskies in shallow weed cover is the 7” straight model ShallowRaider. The straight model design provides the lure with the necessary buoyancy to rise up, over and out of snags and, you can modify its buoyancy to generate the hang-time you desire.
It also functions as a hybrid lure in that you can start the retrieve with erratic twitches and pauses to trigger and initial strike but then, you can straight-crank the lure all the way into the figure-8 for a chance to trick a following musky at boatside. As you will see in this video, the ShallowRaider made the difference for me on a day when I could not get muskies to follow or strike on my prime spots using classic run-and-gun tactics. I was sure glad I made the switch!

The ultimate rod for throwing small to medium sized musky jerkbaits like the ShallowRaider is St. Croix’s new “Musky Downsizer” series Legend Tournament Rod (LMD710MF). The medium power provides all the power you need to set the hook on a trophy fish but also just the right amount of finesse to cast these light flat-bodied lures into the wind. Krew, thanks dude!! I was actually surprised that I saw the boil at night - I must have barely seen it and kept figure-8'ing. Nighttime boatside strikes are just insane!

Great video. Are you gentlemen planning on being at the tinley Park Illinois show this weekend? I’d like to snag an Elvis buchertail among other things.
