- Rafe Heydel-Mankoo speaks to Mike Graham about the "stench of hypocrisy" he says surrounds deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner over the capital gains tax scandal she is embroiled in.
It comes as shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said Angela Rayner will focus on facts rather than “gossip” in the ongoing row over her living arrangements.
The Sunday Times has reported that her former aide said there was “no doubt in my mind that this was Ms Rayner’s family home” when he visited her at what she says was her husband’s address in 2014.
Police are investigating whether Labour’s deputy leader broke electoral law after Tory allegations that she may have given false information about her main residence a decade ago.

You are all missing the point. All MPs in the House of Parliament should be subject to the same laws and regulations as their constituents.
They should indeed be held to higher standards of honesty and behaviour.
The real issue is around the alleged tax fraud. Did Rayner state that the property she said she lived in and rented out was the primary residence? if she did there is a real issue, generally the property that the family lives in including where the children live is the primary residence this is even more the case if the other property is rented out and then sold. I can not see how a property that is rented out, sold and where the main nucleus of the family does not live can in any way be called the primary residence. If she manages to convince the HMRC of that then was tax paid on the remaining property when it was settled as part of her divorce proceedings????
But HMRC don't think she's done anything wrong so it's a bogus story.

@@snookerman Actually if she was renting to her brother because of the blood relatives clause in the Private Landlord Act legislation the rental is exempt from most of the criteria you mention, certainly does not have to conform to anything beyond a CP 12. But what makes you automatically think her Brother is claiming housing benefit? Further I really doubt Rayner will have a Student Loan exemption - on what? a "No Value Qualification" in Social Care? Mate you really need to do your homework - even if the ginger 'tute had gone to Uni (hardly a big ask for woman born in 1980 so benefiting from the "open doors for wh*res" policy of the BLiar gov't) she would not have been able to claim a student loan exemption on an MPs salary.

I know enough, to know that a tax on selling second properties isn't incurred when selling your only property.
I know enough, to know that even if a woman were forced to declare her only property as surplus to her husband, due to some archaic 'Handmaid's Tale' style statute, there are enough categories of home improvements that can be written off against any profits, to negate any tax due. Improvements that are very likely to have been carried out by the parent of a disabled child, and which also justify that parent continuing to live in the adjusted property, even after entering a new relationship.
I know enough, to know that the police already investigated, years ago, after a Tory mischief-maker tried stirring the pot, and there was ruled no case to answer.
The circumstances of a case do not change, just because another mischief-maker corruptly leans on the police, to perform special favours for them, by re-opening a settled case, to aid in a smear campaign.
What Ashcroft and the other Tory meddler have done, is essentially what Trump attempted to do, with his 'perfect phone call' to Georgia election officials, and to President Zelensky. For which he and his conspirators are facing criminal charges.

10 years ago a young woman made a modest sum selling her house. This young woman spent time with her husband to be at his place. This young woman may or may not have made a mistake involving tax and may owe £3,000. This is a story? Focus on the £millions made by corrupt tories and their cronies during the pandemic which caused peoples deaths. I am going to be blunt. These 4 wittering away are a group of scumbags.
If it's true she wasn't living there, she avoided £20k+ in tax and discount repayment. Then add mortgage fraud, council tax fraud, benefit fraud and undeclared rental income.
Plus, even if it should have been listed as her second residence (no reason why it should), any taxable profit would be reduced by the amount spent on improvements before the sale.
Which, given her son's disability, is likely to be considerable, to provide reasonable adjustments.
I strongly suspect that's the ace card Angela's holding back, that gives her the confidence no tax was owed, regardless of the hairsplitting over primary and secondary residence definitions.
The overriding point here is that Labour is opposed to the purchase of council houses, thus the fact that this woman bought and sold two council properties makes her a hypocrite of the highest order.
And made a tidy profit off both as well

Misrepresenting Labour's criticisms of Right To Buy may have worked in the past, but audiences today have the ability to fact check.
Socialists don't oppose personal property, and Labour are barely socialist anyway, they're 'democratic socialists', which is essentially capitalism with guard rails.
Labour's objection to Right To Buy was that councils were being forced to sell property, by central government defunding, when it should have provided surplus cash.
And that councils were forbidden from using the proceeds to buy or build new social housing.
That's why we have a housing shortage, and a price bubble, that prevents people getting on the bottom rung.

It's not just about IHT if you take the discount sale price most councils insist that it must be your primary residence. If you sell before the said 5 year period you are required to pay back the discount and in some cases a portion of the profit.
She has allowed a nearly empty former council to be under used for 5 years in a area of great need

When I meet my mates at weekends for a pint I know that some of us bought and sold Ex council houses, some of us have 'blended' families and lived at two addresses for a while and some of use own 2 houses and pay bill's from both addresses. This will apply to lots of people across the UK. Shouldn't we all be investigated as a matter of fairness. Perhaps we should all 'turn ourselves in' . Just a thought.
