I personally like Ants Canada products. I find them very easy to clean and mould isn’t a problem. I strongly dislike ytong tests for mould and clean-ability. I haven’t had a Tar Heel nest but have heard plaster moulds easily and can be difficult to clean. If it’s in fact made of grout I might give them a shot. Thanks for the review.
I have just started in the hobby after half a decade watching youtube videos routinely. Caught a regular black ant queen at work in a water bottle and went and bought $400 of AC stuff hehe. But I have read a few instances of ants chewing through the ventilated port plugs AC uses. So i'll be watching out for that, as I bought ample and plan to hard modulate my setup.
@@GalaxyGeassS2 from my own experience, definitely fill the vented plugs with a bit of cotton ball. My carpenter (C. Penn) colony started to make the little holes bigger. If you are in USA you can buy queens from tar heel ants just make sure the species is legal to ship in your state if not try waiting after rain fall to catch some queens after they mate. In general you will get good results from looking up queen ants for sale. I highly recommend finding your own queen because it is much cheaper than buying, if you do find/get a queen good luck with the colony 😁
@@denhambad That makes sense. The AC outworld is like $60, so if you combine the 2, Tar Heels wins. I currently have AC products, I will check out some other brands too
I've found with the TarHeel nests that the mesh covered reservoir, there's one in the bottom of this one, can get all moldy. Had one in the Inception Chamber formicarium. I legit cut the mesh off the top of mine so I could clean out all the gunk growing in there and used it for a feeding pit/arena, which was fun.
@@antsanatomy1436 If I ever order from them again I'll probably try a custom job asking for one without it or just stick to the ones that don't include one inside. The only ways I can think of for the internal resivoir is the sponge system like aus ants or filling a small void in the plaster like with tarheels inception chamber. Adding water to a sponge the ants can't reach through a small hole in the glass feels like the best alternative and they could always make a screened off void for the sponge. When the glass is removed you can replace the sponge.

Your best nest is severely over-priced and very crude in its construction including materials. A natural tunnel from the outworld to the nest is preferable to a plastic tube which this has. The magnetic front is a problem waiting to happen and I would never trust it unless it was laying down. For the same price you can get a quality formicarium that will do much better.
Tar Heel is kind of overpriced in my opinion .I could easily find something of a simolar design and quality from taobao for one third of the price. Shipping is also one twentieth of the shipping price of Tar Heel to southeast asia. I also think antscanada is way better in terms of cost as the shipping is only twenty dollars compared to the eighty dollars of tar heel. I also feel that you get much more for what you pay for as the ac nests are bigger for the cost. Will try tar heel when I have the money😀
