QUESTION: Are any of you guys starting your very first ant colony or another ant colony to your already growing collection this year? Let me know what your ideal species is! Let's bless your goals with good luck in this thread!
AntsCanada Tetramorium Caespitum!! And a good reason to catch ants from your area is that if the ant's escape it shall not damage your environment, especially if you grow your own food!!!!
I am going to be honest. At first I found this channel and thought to watch it as a joke because I was always told that ant keeping was weird but as I got to learn about these fascinating creatures from such an enthusiastic person such as yourself I started to think about it from a new perspective. Thank you so much!! (I am thinking about actually starting an ant colony of my own!)
I would choose native for the simple fact that it makes me feel more in tune to the land I call home. Being more and more familiar with where you live gives you a spiritual connection to it that is uplifting and inspiring.

After many hopeless years of no queen I caught 9 queens I’m so happy! You’ve changed my perspective on ants for life now I’m going to Spain in 6 days there’s plenty of awesome ants there !
Yesterday was the mating flight of the carpenter ants, here in the UK. I just managed to catch a queen that's wings had fallen of (meas it's mated). I put her in a container full of dirt and moss and now I've got a mini ant farm. 😊
A few weeks, a few queens got into my apartment. As I don’t have the time to keep the ants, I put them back to nature. Seems I didn’t catch all of them, because I now have an uncontrolled colony.
@@louistownend184 they usually come out around the summer months so like June July and August. You'll know it's happening because there's gonna be a bunch of ant flying every. When it's going on you can just look at the ground basically anywhere to find them.

One factor that many don't think about is that If people don't agree with your ethics, they will deny you their business. Why would I want to support people who don't care about our planet or actually care about the lives of the ants? I love your outlook on actually being empathetic and keeping ants in their native areas. Thank you, AC father. I love your channel and the way you do business. I am in an apartment currently but if I ever own a home, I am seriously considering starting a colony. ❤ please keep doing your thing.

AC question of the week answer: According to this video, catching local queen ants is better for the environment because exotic queens could be shipped illegaly, they maybe don't survive to new and different conditions and diet. Also because they can spread diseases, outcome native ants, become pests and the other exotic ants could destabilize one entire ecosystem after being released intentionally or accidentally. #antloveforever Ps: hope the golden empire is well!
I have a similar question to this. I live in North America and I'd want to get a honeypot ant queen. However, I don't live in the arid states in America, I live in Ohio bordering Indiana (aka probably one of the most biologically-boring areas I've ever seen). Would it still be alright to get them because they're still native to the country?
Theodore Hodbor I would avoid getting them due to the great differences in ecosystems, but if you can work out an ethical and fool proof way of keeping them, then try your best. I personally don't recommend that you get them because most methods of obtaining them are unethical, but as long as you can mimic their natural habitat, you should be ok.
I'm kinda lucky to live in the canary Islands, because we have some interesting species, alongside with the most common. I think I've spotted some ghost ants a few times in a familiar's house
AntsCanada If you got the drive to do it and the work ethic too then it's not too hard. That's not to say it isn't hard but here in the US where I'm at you have to put in a good bit of effort with your swarm prevention. In fact Spring is when you spend most of your time in the hives as the colonies come out of winter and start building back up as well as bringing in nectar and pollen. If really want to go for it then my first suggestions would be to try to find someone around you that keeps bees to try and be an apprentice of some kind and research the hobby in your area. Biggest thing you may have to worry about is the Africanised bees if you have them there.
So I planted my queen, buried her in perfect soil and watered daily. Kept in perfect sunshine levels for about a month. Nothin happened, does it usually take this long?

I haven't got my queen ant from my backyard. I got it only a few hours away & I can actually find this species in my town. So don't worry #TeamNativeAnts
As long as its in your country and not something completely absent or alien to your local ecosystem it is fine. For example, owning ants from one part of Europe in another part of Europe is generally fine, but getting South American species, or Australian or vice versa etc would be problematic. For example, say you live in the city, it would not be the end of the world to have ants from the countryside etc.
Team Native ants because if take an ant species like Yellow Crazy ants they will feed on native animals or other ants to the point of extinction like the Christmas Island red crabs So please join Team Native ants so the environment is perfectly balanced.
Watching this in 2019. I appreciate the extended discussion on ethics. While the exotic species are indeed neat, and I understand the temptation to own them, it's so awesome the see this in depth discussion in a hobby setting (really of any hobby).
Faolan The Wolf be patient. if you aren't, you probably won't have the right materials to house and feed them, and you would probably have lots of escapies, and your mom would probably kick you out. im in the same situation.
Wanting to get started into raising ants next year. Something I'm happy about is that I live in a place where the temperatures get below freezing so anything tropical will definitely not hurt the ecosystem since they will be dead within a year if they get out. Still wouldn't import from anywhere like Europe with similar temperatures where non-native ants could survive.
Aww... I really wanted to get exotic ants but now i know. They could bring ant diseases and kill the native ants. Wow, i never realized that. :( I don't want the native ants to die so i'll go with #TeamNativeAnts. I hope you guys have successful ant colonies!

So, there was this fly in my house but I thought it looked weird so instead of killing it I decided to catch it. To my surprise, it was a queen ant. I found a queen ant in my house. wtf.

5:05 -- Well said! It's important to know how critical ecosystems are on our planet. An exotic foreign insect or animal can disrupt or even destroy another ecosystem if brought in from another part of the world. We've seen many examples of invasive species in history. Consider that almost half of threatened or endangered species are at risk due to an invasive species! DON'T BUY FOREIGN EXOTIC ANTS!! Why do you think you're not allowed to bring in foreign fruit into another country? Because of the small chance it could contain an invasive species!! From one small piece of fruit! That's how serious the government is in regards to invasive species!

Does it have to be your back yard why not at the park in the same counrty around he courner (I am German please tell me what ants I can get)
RiZE what's with Myrmica ruba?
As long as its in your country and not something completely absent or alien to your local ecosystem it is fine. For example, owning ants from one part of Europe in another part of Europe is generally fine, but getting South American species, or Australian or vice versa etc would be problematic.
For example, say you live in the city, it would not be the end of the world to have ants from the countryside etc.
I wish I have even just a fraction of your passion. You are truly something else. Continue doing what you love. 👏👏👏
Are there stores where you can buy ants in Texas Amarillo because you really have me hooked on this stuff but it’s winter here so
Use the internet

Team Native ants because if take an ant species like Yellow Crazy ants they will feed on native animals or other ants to the point of extinction like the Christmas Island red crabs
So please join Team Native ants so the environment is perfectly balanced.
I’m here #team native ants
I highly doubt it was an ant keeper who spread yellow crazy ants to Christmas island.

Watching this in 2019. I appreciate the extended discussion on ethics. While the exotic species are indeed neat, and I understand the temptation to own them, it's so awesome the see this in depth discussion in a hobby setting (really of any hobby).
so everyone keeps mocking on me for wanting an ant colony
imagine having a cat or a dog as a pet creeps tbh
Creepy dogs
Kill everyone
nothings wrong with having a ant colony
PSSH I DEFFENITLY DONT HAVE A CAT AND DOG-
I have a cat,dog,tortoise,and want a ant colony
ANTS FOREVER!
I want to keep ants but I'm not 18 and my mom won't let me what do I do
Faolan The Wolf wait till you're 18 and move out.
L0r3nz0 ok but I love ants and keep them right now or should I be patient
Faolan The Wolf be patient. if you aren't, you probably won't have the right materials to house and feed them, and you would probably have lots of escapies, and your mom would probably kick you out. im in the same situation.
Faolan The Wolf me too
DaETou idk thank you guys that helps ne out alot
Wanting to get started into raising ants next year.
Something I'm happy about is that I live in a place where the temperatures get below freezing so anything tropical will definitely not hurt the ecosystem since they will be dead within a year if they get out. Still wouldn't import from anywhere like Europe with similar temperatures where non-native ants could survive.
Who else cried at 9:39 ;(
Inkyu Basu only you
Inkyu Basu
I'm not an emotional person but for whatever weird reason I got goosebumps lol
But crying?! Jesus Christ, see a therapist!
Umm.... only you... ._.
Aww... I really wanted to get exotic ants but now i know. They could bring ant diseases and kill the native ants. Wow, i never realized that. :( I don't want the native ants to die so i'll go with #TeamNativeAnts.
I hope you guys have successful ant colonies!
+DoomT/Gaming/Ants ant love forever!
AntsCanada whats the music at 3:20 called?
Cringe
For some reason just watching antscanadas ant vids I lost my phobia of ant cuz before I accidentally stepped on an ant hill and millions of ants crawled on my leg good thing I was wearing pants XD
+Apple Pie wow. Good to hear and sorry about your traumatic experience.
a red ant bit my ankle
Apple Pie XD
Apple Pie i was once hit a huge leaf on a tree, than hundred of fire ant drop to my body and they manage to get to my "private" part... yeah.. its not fun.. at all..
i left my sandals outside when on holiday to the tropics and their were about 600,000 ants in them
YOU inspired me to do this. Thank you so much AntsCanada!!:))
I like watching ants. They're so interesting. However i wouldn't want to keep them because i don't have time or skill. They would probably end up escaping😶🐜
Mine would probably end up dead the second I feed them a roach
So, there was this fly in my house but I thought it looked weird so instead of killing it I decided to catch it. To my surprise, it was a queen ant. I found a queen ant in my house. wtf.
Nephilim Born
You should probably let it back out since they still havent mated if you wanted to make a small colonie out of it :)
Nephilim Born the ant army is after you now
GrippingShark it probably has mated thats why its in his house. it was looking for a good place to make a home
Bandit Leader
He clearly said fly meaning the Queen still had theyre wings attached. They dont have wings when theyve already mated.
GrippiNeon: Sometimes they keep their wings for a while after mating

I still buy exotic ants in my country the winter are wayyyyyt to cold for them to survive
