I'm 47 and in Perimenopause. I have noticed a great improvement in my mood and energy levels since doing the following: Taking a supplement (Calcium/Magnesium /Vit D/Zinc), reducing caffeine, reducing sugar, and I'm on Iron due to low Iron stores and I really am noticing a difference. The fatigue and apathy was horrendous, hot flushes were getting stronger. Now my depression and apathy have gone, have more energy and my hot flushes have reduced in intensity 😊

Each time i feel foggy, irritable, when i feel my muscles weak or restless legs i take magnesium and it makes me feel much better, but i'm not sure if it's my imagination.
I love magnesium citrate for the mental clarity it seems to give, but I worry it causes my muscles to cramp. It shouldn’t, but I think the diarrhea it can cause makes me dehydrated, causing tight muscles. I wouldn’t think 200 mg would do this.
Hi April Unfortunately, some people are really sensitive to magnesium citrate so you may find swapping over to a chelated magnesium supplement such as magnesium taurate, glyconate, lysinate or orotate is better for you.

Hi Margaret - Glad to be of help! Have you tried a magnesium supplement for the muscle stiffness, 200mg once or twice a day can often be beneficial and this can also help with mood and sleep. Passiflora Complex may also help with the throat spasming - remember to drink lots of water as dehydration can be a factor here too.

Snap, I am about 3 1/2 years post menopause and have been through the lot! But funny enough this end of the 2 year mark. I have had really frightening rib spasms both front and back, tightening and feels like I cant expand my ribs. Some times like you, in my throat also. Hello, just on your comment about taking magnesium with heart medication. I’m on propanalol which is a beater blocker and I was just wondering if it is ok to take magnesium with this. Hi Magnesium should be fine but it is best to start at a low dose and work your way up. I would suggest putting the one you have got to one side for the moment and start on 100mg of magnesium citrate, try this for 2 weeks then increase to 100mg twice a day for another 2 weeks or so then try the 375mg (just check what kind of magnesium it is as some are not very absorbable). I would also let your doctor know you are taking it the next time you see them. Magnesium is also good for the heart so may also be of benefit that way too!

Hi Maria, Magnesium stearate is used in tablets as a release agent in helping tablets to dissolve, this is not included in a daily magnesium dosage, you would need specific food supplements of some kind to be of benefit.

Use topical magnesium oil. Spray on the skin, wipe off after 20 min or use a lotion and rub it in. No tummy issues and more gets absorbed.

Hi Maria, Magnesium stearate is used in tablets as a release agent in helping tablets to dissolve, this is not included in a daily magnesium dosage, you would need specific food supplements of some kind to be of benefit.
