That's because in spanish the ''S'' it is not like a ''whisper'', it is an actual word, ''ese'', so when people is used to talk a lot in spanish it is normal to pronounce the S that way. He probably doesn't speak english a lot too.

We cant pronunce the "sp" sound.. thats why most of us cant say "springsteen" and we say "eh-springsteen" Its the same for english speakers.. with spanish words... you cant pronunce words with "R" properly. Its not because we havent learned to... its because it is difficult to learn.
Yes, teachers always explain that and they insist over and over, but anyway, we Spanish always say this "eh" sound before a word that begins with S. We just can´t help it.
