- After 100,000 miles of using, abusing, and enjoying the Magnuson Supercharger on our Toyota 4Runner, we wanted to share our real life experience and recommendations. As one of the first 4Runners to test the supercharger, we have been running this on our truck since October of 2017 and have put it through strenuous testing including towing an adventure trailer cross-country (and back) totaling over 7,500 miles up and down mountains and through several deserts. We tried to answer all the questions we've seen across our social media and in person, so if you have any addtional questions make sure to leave a comment below!
We put a lot of time and effort into producing this content and we hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it! TO THE DIRT!

Thank you for the math. My wife is a math person and the breakdown will help me plead my case. lmao.
Haha I hope my math holds up! Make sure you’re subbed I have a special update video dropping soon! I’ll do more maths in it to buttress the discussion.
Lol
Good luck
wow how sad😢
Over 200k on the Whipple supercharger, I put on my Chevy truck and only had the same issues you've had. They will eat belts and tensioner pulleys. I also found changing the plugs every 50K helped tremendously. A Magnuson is on my short list for my new 4Runner.
Hey, I have 2002 tacoma stepside with a trd supercharger installed from day one. It is simply the best add on you can purchase. Back then it was $3000..I don't remember the dealership even charging me for installation. Now..I've had it 22 years. Currently has almost 280,000 miles on it. Never had any issues. Never been rebuilt. And yes, I drive it hard. It runs just as good as the day I bought. Only use premium in all my vehicles and toys. Change oil every three thousand miles. Do the PM and it will last forever....thinking about putting a supercharger on my new 40th anniversary 4RUNNER...only have 531 miles after six weeks of ownership...
Great review straight forward. To the point and very informative.
Great review. Thank you
Much appreciated!
Awesome video, I didn't know that you needed to run 91 octane with a supercharger but it makes sense.
Killer video and if I didn't just roll over 180k on my 13 I'd be in. Maybe on the next one! Keep the content coming. 🤙🤘
Thank you!
I need one of these for my 2015 Tacoma!
I supercharged my 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium at the end of 2019 and I have never had any issue! To be fair, I have never daily driven my 4Runner though, which obviously helps, having less mileage. I only use it for overlanding, camping, off road exploring, adventure rig and recently drove it from Canada's west coast, all the way to the east coast, then back, (from Vancouver to Halifax and back), and my only issue was running over a nail in Quebec lol. The Magnuson sc is still by far the best mod I have done to my 4Runner! Finally being able to pass on the highway was a dream come true lol
I love seeing these updates from others who installed it! Awesome video!
@lunamaria1048 where in Canada did you get it installed?

Did this have to get a custom tune? Is it plug and play?
May have been answered already but just in case I’ll answer. Magnuson includes a reader that plugs in to upload the new tune/settings
Toyota once offered this as an option from their parts department. So it should be no surprise that it works well. 80 HP and 75 ft lbs…extra I believe.
Made by Magnuson for Toyota. Now it just comes straight from Magnuson.
Could be mistaken but I think Eaton actually makes them
I had a TRD supercharger in my 1997 4runner. It was a blast!
I kind of regret selling that vehicle, but now I have a 2023 gen 3 Tacoma, so looking into getting a magnuson in a year or so.
I just subscribed! Sigh of relief that you are out of Florida. Is there a 4runner group that i can join down here where they go wheeling together?
That hood slam at the end made me drop my phone lol
😂
Great video! It was fun to hear about your experience. I came to the same cross roads of what was I going to do keep my 2013 4Runner and put a $9,000 (with labor) super charger on it, or trade it in and get a Lexus GX 460 (Lexus' version of the 4Runner) with a 4.6L V8 (this decision was in 2021). I'm sure you made the choice because of the same reasons I did, which is as much as we love our 4Runner's they are absolutely gutless once you load them up with people and gear.
I chose to trade in the SUV and got a great deal on a 2019 GX 460 and that V8 made all the difference in our towing and off roading experiences. It ended up costing way less when factoring the cost of the super charger so for me it was the better choice. What I did do to the motor was have it re-tuned so that it lets out more of that horse power and torque that is available in the Lexus LS 460, so for $900 instead of 301 hp and 329 lbs torque which is stock in the GX 460, it now puts out 386 hp and 367 lbs of torque just like the LS 460 version of the same motor.
I am glad you are happy and it is running great for you.
damn thats a smart idea. how is your gx holding up so far? has it affected the mpg that much?
@@FuryfistXMy GX 460 is doing great. I just took a work trip in it from Central Texas to Arizona and it was wonderful. It is such a great cruising vehicle and so comfortable. We are heading off to Tennesse for two weeks for Thanksgiving to visit family, and then off to Colorado to go skiing in December all in the GX. Can't beat it!
Nice
I love mine, the only regret I have is waiting 40,000 to make a decision!
How often do you change the coolant for the supercharger..?..love the video.. keep up the good work!
I've only changed it once since the install. I check it frequently and it's still good!
I have a TRD super charger Tacoma I just turned 82 thousand little maintenance belts about every 4 years it takes tundra spark plugs. if it hits a cold temperature the pump will run the antifreeze it will kill the battery in three days or so. Rhode Island. 2011.taco he's right worth every penny. Get it.
Hey good review: Im running a 1320 on my 2012 Jeep JK with 6 speed manual. It rips its great fun. Do you have a boost guage installed on yours? where is the boost guage port on the SC? Thanks!!
so dope! which insurance company would you recommend that covers superchargers?
I’d have to do more research on that. If I find something I’ll let you know.
Great followup video. Out of curiosity, if you had the opportunity to start from scratch and do it all over again, would you buy a 4Runner and then upgrade with the supercharger, or would you get a GX460?
I’d still do the 4runner with the supercharger. It’s punchier than the v8.
do an oil test to see how the engine is holding up and post the results there is a good base built up on 4 runners stock already with a company like Blackstone
Last time I checked the oil tasted fine!
Damn you! Now I am going to have to go without Dunkins for 6 years.😂
Wow! Unbelievable
Been looking to get one for my 4runner but wanted to see some long term reviews. Thanks for that. Did you get it dyno'd at any point?
Thanks for the feedback. I have not had it dyno'd yet. Magnuson tunes the ECM based on stock intake, exhaust, gear ratio, tires, and maybe a few other variables. Basically they tune it for a stock truck with a supercharger. I may need to redo the tune because we put 285's on the truck, but other than that the performance hasn't really been diminished at all. After the servicing of the supercharger we might throw it on a dyno to get it tuned perfectly.
@@ToTheDirt Hey who installed your supercharger. i’m in Tampa Fl looking to do this supercharger upgrade
@@tellinustr8up unfortunately the mechanic who did the work is no longer in town. I’m looking for a local shop and will keep you posted!
I’m interested, question for you, are the replacement pulleys, belts etc that you had to replace when they failed, readily available at the parts store? Or did you have to buy them from Magnuson? Also, what did you have to do to the engine computer?
Yeah all the parts were found at the local Advance Auto Parts, including the tensioner. Magnuson ships a tuner with the supercharger, so you just plug it into the OBDII port and it runs the tune.
Does it need servicing and how often, and if it needs servicing what is the service for it 😅. i just bought an FJ cruiser with the same supercharger. Would really appreciate it if u would help me out. Love your content 🤘
I can’t say for sure for your model since the supercharger on our rig was redesigned for the 5th Gen 4runner. Our model says it’s sealed and doesn’t need regular maintenance for at least 100k miles. We’ve replaced pulleys, idlers and belts along the way. That video will be dropping soon.
Good video and setting the right expectations with the plugs/coil packs & pulley problem but Magnusson needs to step up and quit selling it if they cant get the Mopar 4cyl idler pulley part# and coolant connections right from the get-go.
Had mine since spring '21 about 20k miles so far 18 mos later. The coolant hoses/fittings are sized wrong for each other they slightly leak. And the china man Pulley is also a COMMON problem with these kits. Magnussen ships the kits with an el cheapo Idler pulley that WILL bounce around and cause problems under load and thats probably why your bearing is wallowing out not the dust. Maggie will eventually ship you a free BETTER design one not made in china... but you have to 'prove it' to their tech line with video of it wobbling around. Put the truck in Drive w Ebrake on and turn ON the AC and wait for compressor to cycle...you will see the blower tensioner rattle around making the phantom clicking noise. Maggie will give you the better Dayco one eventually. The fact that you can be on a long distance trip or up in the rural mountains/desert and this $30-40 garbage idler could leava ya stranded aint cool. Id suggest a spare new idler and belt for future trips especially w the lame covid supply chain problems.
To fix the wrong sized coolant line connections you need a 5/8-3/4 brass hose adapter. Its a low pressure system and the leaks are minimal but for $7k you would think maggie would get the KNOWN hose connections and KNOWN Idler pulley prob right from the factory and ship out replacement pulleys for all existing unsold kits. Very maddening already going thru this since month #2 hearing the noise on mine and dealer saying nothings wrong. Fixed it myself under warranty, and the newer better pulley is WAY stiffer so its not easy to get the belt back on.
I drove from socal to Houston round trip with the idler pulley noise not knowing yet thats exactly what it was. I was blaming my AC clutch bc it only made noise in Drive w AC on. It was the low rpm motor loaded while in gear that the idler couldnt control the belt. Very un-nerving and not inline with Toyota reliability. Your not going to visually see it screwing up unless the car is in Drive at idle.
Blown/worn Pulleys are not normal and should not be expected much less the coolant leaks you will have unless you put the kit together with smaller 5/8 hose or get the step down adapters($2-3 each) at the reservoir/pump junctions. OEM boosted applications do not do these things. I assumed bc Toyota and TRD history this would.beba seamless experience, not a problem having dealer do it all and the high price. It always goes back to hot rodding 101 - nothing aftermarket is perfect always going to be something to work through. Good life lesson for me to always buy it from factory w boost or none at all.
That's a shame man, we've had an overall good experience with the 4runner. Magnuson was contracted as the OEM for the TRD superchargers back in the day, so I'm sure they know what they're doing for our rig.
@@ToTheDirt We have had a great experience with ours also just the idler pulley problem should have never been a problem due to magnussens bad decision. It is is a common thing on 4R forums ive gound half a dozen others online w busted pulleys, we are not the only ones. The water leaks are super minimal but they can be eliminated with the $3 brass couplers. Maggie should be shipping them w smaller ID hoses.
I've got a 2016 Tundra TRD Pro CrewMax and I absolutely love my Magnuson supercharger!!!
Not knowing where you are in Florida, I live an hour north of Tampa.
The only other thing I want to add soon is a rear sway bar for interstate towing.
About 30 min south of Tampa!
I’m tired of my low performance FJ Cruiser 😂 this is something I’ve been considering doing, same motor so should be the same result 🤷🏻♂️
I believe you’d have the same model supercharger that we have ;)
@@ToTheDirt I drove a New Bronco First edition last fall & it made me ashamed of the lack of power in my FJ so I looked into the supercharger!
Is that Citrus WMA?
Awesome info! I have about 160k on my 4runner now. Would you think adding the supercharger now would affect my 4runner negatively?
In my humble opinion, I don’t think it would hurt the engine as long as you’ve maintained your vehicle correctly over the years. I’m no mechanic or automotive engineer so take that with a grain of salt.
I'm getting ready to pull the trigger and sell my F150 for a 4runner. My only issue with the 4runner is the lack of power; however, this supercharger will be the first mod I install. It's really too bad the TRD models don't come stock with a SC, especially for the price!
It really has been a game changer for us. It does amazing on road and as a daily driver, and rally makes a difference on the trails. You'll be happy with it!
Looks like Citrus in one of those clips. How often do you wheel out there? I'm over on the East Coast by the Space Center. I try to get over there at least once every month or so
It’s been a minute for me but we’re getting back out there soon. Hit me on up IG and I’ll keep you posted.
Hey man! I had my supercharger installed back in Oct. the shop working on it was working on another 4Runner and it had a pedal commander and they said it was night and day difference from mine without. Are you running a pedal commander on yours? Plus my supercharger is only at 1700 miles and when temps dropped to 15° I noticed a pulley would make a little noise and go away when it warmed up. Now it makes the noise for a few minutes if temps drop below 40° then goes away when warmed up. Have you had any pulley noise when temps dropped?
Congrats on the supercharger, I bet you're loving it. I'm not running a pedal commander, I like the throttle response and have never been left wanting something else. I've actually seen people left stranded on the side of the road because of issues with the PC... that's not really an option for us. We're based out of Florida, so we rarely get temps below 40 so I haven't noticed that with the cold. I've had to replace pulleys because of dust and mud intrusion into the bearings. I'd make sure you don't have anything getting into the bearings?
@@ToTheDirt thanks man! Your video helped me decide to get one. Yea I’m pretty sure it’s not dust since it only happens when it’s cold and only started when we got a cold front come through and dropped the temps to 15° a month ago then when it warmed up to 78° the pulley sound went away. It only happens on cold starts in cold weather. Tomorrow we’re back to high 30s in the mornings (crazy Houston weather). Lol.
I did contacted Magnuson before I installed the kit and they said the pulleys were a supplier manufacturing problem and they’ve since updated it with the newer kits. Hopefully it won’t cause a problem.
But yea I love this thing even more with the added power. I pull double waverunners and now it’s not a slug on the freeway and small climbs anymore. Haha. Even my wife who’s not a car person can tell it’s not struggling towing our skis.
Certainly interesting to know, but probably will never do it to my 05 since the supercharger installed would probably equal the value of the car
But you still plan on driving it right?

To get the most out of the Magnuson SC what other mods should I do at the same time I get mine installed? Thanks in advance!
I think the programming from Magnuson is different from when I got mine but if you’re planning on running bigger tires, then you let them know and it’ll be accounted for the in the tune. I run a stock intake and stock exhaust and it does great.
Did you install the supercharger with low miles? I’m at 110k and thinking about this, but I’m also concerned I missed the window to put one on.
40ish k. I think you’d be ok if you do regular maintenance. Give Magnuson a call they’re super helpful
are you running stock gears with the maggie?
Yes!
I wish Toyota still offered a smaller displacement TRD supercharged
This is it, just without the TRD branding!
How’s the transmission holding up. Did you have to mod/update the transmission
Transmission has been fine, I think the most strain on it would be from the bigger/heavier tires.
Hi, where did you install it here in Florida? I'm getting one!
At my local dealership but they no longer do the install there.
What other add-ons are needed/recommended when installing the supercharger? ie exhaust, HO gas, spark….
Just have to run 91+ octane. The Magnuson tune is for basically stock 4Runners so no exhaust or Intake upgrades needed.
Had a magnuson installed on my tundra and I’ve had issues starting the vehicle in very cold conditions any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Being from Florida very cold means around 49 degrees… how cold is it when you’re having issues?
Under normal driving conditions, has the MPG's changed after the supercharger?
I had a slight increase in my fuel economy right after putting the supercharger on. The supercharger was the first modification to the vehicle, which is a 2016 TRDPro, and it went from 18mpg to 20mpg. I put a lot of miles both highway and city with it this way and the mpgs remained around that level. It wasn't until I put the 285's on that I had a significant decrease in fuel economy, but since I never ran those before the supercharger I can't say what the difference in fuel economy would be between stock tires and M/Ts.
From what I gather, most don't even upgrade their fuel injectors or pumps either. Did you ? Or just install since this is sorta meant for Toyotas anyways? Im really wanting one for my Tacoma. Its a dog in the mountains.
There's no need because the Magnuson Supercharger is designed as a complete kit, and tuned around the stock injectors and fuel pumps. I'm sure you can crank out a significant amount of extra power by throwing on aftermarket injectors, fuel pumps, and using a smaller pulley but at the risk of decreasing reliability. I might look into it though...
Are you able to put a K&N intake for airflow and aesthetics?
The Magnuson tune is for the factory air box. I had the K&N CAI originally and it did not fit the supercharger. One of the inlets for the CAI tube got in the way. I’m not sure if they have redesigned it in the meantime.
Not necessary. The tune was written for the stock OEM air box. Adding 2-3 point higher octane on the SC kit will increase power though.
I’m sold! Lol. So how many miles does your 4runner have now?
more.. haha I'll have to go check the Odometer.
@@ToTheDirt lol my 2014 4runner is about to turn 100k. Contemplating a sc 😂
How difficult is it to replace the spark plugs? It seems like the SC sits directly on top of them.
It requires unbolting the housing to do a spark plug change.
I’m looking into it, do you know much about URDs supercharger for the 4Runner and how it compares?
I don’t have any experience with the URD. What I can say is Magnuson was contracted for the original TRD superchargers, so that carried a lot of weight with me.
@@ToTheDirt Absolute spot on response. Magnuson IS still today the ONLY S/C that Toyota contracted as a TRD Factory Option (that I know of for production). And I agree with some commenters that it should still be an option. Damn sure would have pushed that play button on my 2020 TRD ORP if available when I ordered it. Thanks for the reviews Sir! @@davec8894 thank you 🤘🏻
My 2016 Tacoma has 143,000 on it would you suggest I still do the kit? I would not want to stress it out and break it because it has couple miles.
I can really only speak from my own experience but after running the supercharger on the truck for 100,000 plus miles I haven’t had any engine issues. I think adding bigger tires, and all the extra weight of the bumpers, sliders and gear stresses the drive train and power train more than the supercharger.
What year is your 4R? They just released the 2020+ version last week
2016
YEP! I've got a 2020 and my kit is being installed today. Allegedly the tune is more aggressive then the pre 2020 5th Gen kits. Been waiting over a year to get this baby installed super stoked! I'll be doing a feature n my channel once it's in.
Nice! Mine is getting installed on my 2020 in October. Cant wait to see your video.
Can you tune it for more boost? Something like 10 lbs.
Yes!
I'm more interested in how many oil leaks it's helped with and how fast it wears out spark plugs and how many extra horses
Zero oil leaks, and normal wear and tear on spark plugs. They installed new plugs with the supercharger install and we replaced the plugs and coils after our cross-country trip. So we got about 135/140k miles on the coils before they were changed. Extra HP and Torque figures may vary with gearing and tire size but 30% more horsepower than stock and with an additional 28% more torque output at just 6psi of boost that's more than 335hp and 345lb-ft at the crank!
Who installed the charger?

@@ToTheDirt I’m located in the panhandle of FL and was just curious. I’m not taking mine just anywhere 😂
@@ToTheDirt The SC kit from Magnuson for the 2020+ 5th Gen 4.0L V6 are putting down 80whp in 2H. 14.75% parasitic drive-train loss from 270hp = 355hp / 364 lb-ft crank. That's only on 91 pump gas. On 95 octane the ECU will advance timing and the SC 4.0L V6 will gain an additional 15whp. About 320whp on 95 octane in 2H. Locked in 4H or 4L the 4 Runner will suffer a whp loss of about 29.5% over all from 365hp on 95 octane to about 257awhp.

Does it void the warranty? I would assume so.
So I’ll give you a lawyer answer: it depends. I had it installed by a Toyota dealership and they stated it would not void the warranty. Magnuson includes a warranty with the supercharger as well. Chances are, if you go off-road you’ve probably already “voided” your warranty if you go to a slimy dealership.
Can you do this to the 4th gen v8?
I’m not sure but Magnuson makes kits for a ton of different vehicles. Check out their website!
Did you go with a true limited slip or is it the stock ALSD?
I haven't changed the stock differential setup. Any benefits to doing so?
@@ToTheDirt just curious I’ve got the stock setup too, I was wondering if you did it! 🤣
Does the whine get annoying when cruising?
You really only hear it when accelerating, and it's only noticeably louder when its a hard pull/high RPM. When just cruising around you don't really hear it. When I had a "cold air intake" it was constantly loud and honestly a little bit annoying.
Did you upgrade your brakes?
Not yet…
what's the towing likenear max towing capacity with the Magnuson?
I haven't had it all the way up to max towing capacity, but between the travel trailer and towing heavy boats, the supercharger has made towing substantial better.
@@ToTheDirt I’d like to get about a 5000 pound trailer which is right at its limit. If I read gear it should work I still have the stock Trd tires and I’m not upgrading.
Can the Supercharger be used withe the TRD Cold Air Intake System?
I can’t say for sure but I believe it does.
It can as many TRD Pro owners do. However, Magnuson recommends using the stock intake and exhaust.
Well whats the power figs?
800hp and 1,200 ft lbs.......did you even bother to ready any of his comments?
What's your mpg with the supercharger
initially it was better than stock... but now I have steel front and rear bumpers, steel sliders, roof rack, and 5 285/70/17 Mud Terrain tires, and a 3 inch lift so I'm getting about 12 mpgs.
You lost me at bearings and high octane fuel & price lol . I’ll keep mine stock thank you 🙏
Enjoy
Considering getting one for my 2022 tacoma with about 15,000 miles. Any idea just how much it’ll shorten my trucks lifespan?
It’s only about 6lbs of boost when under load so pretty mild on the engine… I can’t predict the future but based on my anecdotal experience you shouldn’t have any issues from the supercharger down the road. We’re at about 170k miles and going strong… still worth it to this day!
@@ToTheDirt Thanks🤙🏻
are the tires e rated?
Yes!
Hey, do you have a catch can. And do you think its worth $159
I never added a catch can and have never noticed any metal in my oil when doing changes. It may help if something goes wrong with the blower though.
Is everything else stock?
TRDpro suspension, oversized tires (285/70/17), and bumpers/sliders and roof rack from SSO. Lots of extra weight!
So what was the actual average MPG
Before M/T tires I was getting up to 18mpg highway
Also does it seem to help with towing?
Absolutely. When I didn’t have the belt connected it was a dog. We did a TON of uphill climbing and long ascents (30-45 minutes of straight uphill climbing) and the truck did so much better with the supercharger. Getting on the highway and accelerating in general was much better too.
@@ToTheDirt how much did your trailer weigh?
@@Choppedbrisketsammich about 900lbs dry. Not sure the total with all the gear for the trip but safe it say it around close to 1200 lbs.

Do you tow at all? Looking to see if it’s better at towing now? I tow my boat and trailer each weighing 4K pounds. It’s a dog going up hill.
All the time… towed a trailer 7500 miles to California from Tampa and back, up and down mountains, through deserts and more! Significantly better with the supercharger!

@@ToTheDirt What was the load you were towing? I can tow my 21 foot boat (4500 pounds with trailer give or take) fine on flats but wouldn't dare try that over a pass. I think a supercharger could help with that plus add an aftermarket transmission cooler perhaps and an oil cooler.
@@owenbarton7062 on the cross country trip we probably towed a total of 1,500lbs. The truck has around 900lbs of extra weight. Even at altitude, it didn’t feel like I was pulling a trailer.
Me over here with a 3rd gen. At least it's faster than a 2nd gen
They’ve got superchargers for 3rd Gens 😉
One thing that irritates me is the fact my 4Runner kicks down quickly when going up a hill and will hunt back and forth between 4th and 5th. So I pull it down right away and leave it in 4th until I crest the hill.
Did you notice and difference along those lines? Will your 4Runner pull hills in 5th where it would have kicked down into 4th before the supercharger.
Thank you
Gary
Don’t quote me on it, but I think the Magnuson time may re-map shifting? I’ve noticed less gear hunting when going up hill, even when towing. I remember coming out of death valley heading towards the California side it’s literally up hill for an hour and the truck sat right in 5th gear the whole time. Luckily it was in October so we weren’t overheating in the cab or on the motor lol.

10 grand and more maintenance on a 50k car for modest perf improvements make sense to me but everyones calc is different
Modest lol.
I’ve been having this siphoning or whistling sound underneath my forerunner when I shut my truck off. It sounds like it’s towards the back, but I’m not sure have you ever had any problems like that with your supercharged forerunner? It happens like five minutes after I shut the truck off and it probably last a minute.
That’s your air pump. It’s normal.
@@ToTheDirt air pump?
@@mryikes9602 is your 4runner stock or supercharged?
@@ToTheDirt supercharged just like yours Magnuson had it done like four months ago I noticed when I shut the truck off sometimes I hear it’s sounds like a siphoning sound
@@mryikes9602 so I know when my truck was stock, when I would shut it off sometimes it would sound like that for a few seconds. Sometimes it would happen a few minutes after the truck was completely off. I was told it was the "air pump" and it was normal. With the supercharger I had an issue early on where the installers didn't hook up the supercharger coolant system correctly and it would slowly leak coolant. When the coolant was low you could hear it sucking through the supercharger coolant reservoir.
18hrs of labor are the insane?
We had a pre release version of the supercharger used to basically develop the installation guide and everything…
9k fuuuuuuu. Did you guys regear it too?
No need.
So the fuel cost difference is equivalent to not having breakfast at Dunkin Donuts one day of the week, but still having it. I'm sold! 😂
Thanks for appreciating my math haha
My only hang up on these is I wonder what it’s really doing to the motor internally. I’d like to see a 100k mile stock motor vs. a motor that has had a magnusson installed for 100k miles. Tear them down and have a look, as well as perform compression/leak down tests, etc.
I’m curious how much they’re tearing stuff up that can’t really be seen until it’s pretty bad
IMHO I really don't think it's adding too much additional wear on the motor. The reliability of the Toyota motors can be attributed to the fact they are over built. The supercharger runs at 6psi which is on the low end of boost. It would be cool to be able to do a teardown test like that but this is my daily driver currently!
Toyota used to provide these as OEM parts. Maybe the higher power chargers would result in more wear but these engines are built with lots of headroom.
You didn't mention the new tune you need to make the super charger run properly and also the massive oil Consumptuon you get with super chagers
Because there isn’t massive oil consumption… I change my oil and monitor it regularly and nothing ever really changed. Magnuson ships the supercharger with a programmer and custom tune.
@@ToTheDirt I have noticed with the supercharger, like most superchargers, they are tuned to run richer.
mines on a 2021. different tune.
I’m tired of getting passed by a 2012 Honda Civic 😌
Loud machine noises, quiet speech. I found myself constantly adjusting my volume.
We’ve invested in better equipment the next one will be better balanced.
Does having a Toyota dealer install the supercharger not void the Toyota 5yr/60k powertrain warranty?
In my case it did not. I spent a lot of time going back and forth with Toyota and Magnuson about that issue and both said it wouldn’t affect the warranty. Your experience may vary though.
@@ToTheDirt how’s the daily driving with it? I’ve been looking at my driving rpms and usually I stay between 1-2rpm, 2.5 ever so rarely. I guess when getting on the freeway only, but I live near work and just use the side streets to get there. I tow a single jetski every other week 80 miles one way and hate the gear searching when going uphill on cruise control. But $9.3k installed on a 21 is pretty painful for 80hp gain. I want it, but I am afraid of buyer’s remorse. It will be mostly daily driving for me.
@@willskip2795 I don't think you'd have any buyers remorse once you take your right foot and push down on the skinny pedal. It wakes up the 4runner and makes driving substantially more enjoyable. You can stay under 2k pretty easy, but when you go over it's because you'll want to hear the supercharger whine a bit louder! You'll get slightly better fuel economy with the supercharger, which makes the premium fuel price a little less painful. I daily mine and I wouldn't want to drive it as much if it wasn't supercharged. We just got back from a quick 1,500+ mile roadtrip to the mountains of NC and the supercharger did great.
@@ToTheDirt just ordered a kit for my 21 last week. lead time is 6 weeks. Got to find a reputable shop to do the install. Is there any power gain between 1-2rpm for just regular driving on side streets?
@@willskip2795 congrats man you’ll love it! Most of my driving is between 1.5 and 2.2 and definitely notice the supercharger making a difference! It just pulls harder and has more response than stock!
Supercharged 4Runner
VS
Turbocharged 4Runner
I don’t smoke, but I’d make an exception for smoking a turbo 😂
So the manufacture doesn’t do extended testing oof this component? Pays UA-camrs to be long term testers and fingers crossed?
I haven’t gotten paid a dime.
“As one of the first 4Runners to test the supercharger” ?
....or GX460 😉
Hopefully, the clips of you blowing out a mudhole and doing donuts in the sand were filmed on private land. With the post-covid strain on our public lands, we should all be practicing the "tread lightly" principle.
They were. No dirt was harmed in the making of the videos.
Must be a democrat making comments regarding dirt.. LMAO….
Ya must be a left coaster who forgot to put his big girl panties on, lol.
Put a Venomaire intake and plasma plugs and then do another tune with this stuff, you will gain a lot more power/torque and your fuel economy will sky rocket!! 👊👍
50k ish for 4runner plus $10k and you would be a certified preowned Ford Raptor with a warranty and I am pretty sure faster, tows more, more interior room. I love the 4runner but this really doesn't make sense imo.
I'm not saying you're wrong. But you're wrong ;)
@@ToTheDirt oh and better mpg, more tech, assisted trailer control, aux ports standard, pano sunroof. Heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel. Whew I gotta take a pause to catch my breath 🤣😂🤣😂
@@daniellanzotti2391 yeah I’m stuck on buying this for my 2017 4runner for this reason. I could just sell for 38k ish and not spend the 8k. And get something else preowned that’s better, larger, more towing ie tahoe, f150, Yukon. I would get the new sequoia but dealers are asking 20k over msrp for the lower trim and 30k over on the upper trims.
@@chrisd5383 it could hold you over until the new 4runner. In your situation not bad idea at all but got to figure 8k is if you install it, 10k for a wrench turner to install. I wonder how fast the 0-60 improves because my wife's 2010 lexus rx350 is faster than the current 4runner lol.
@@daniellanzotti2391 I thought about it but would I get my 8k back on the sale?
does it help with gas mileage? LOL
Hahaha, I will never do this to my 4 runner, I plan to drive it until the day I die. And it still can run. If I don’t do any mod.
Ok... you're missing out though!
Definitely not worth it. clearly if you have to amortize the calculations.. you can’t afford it.
I didn't amortize the calculations. I calculated the amortization. Stick to star wars and live long and prosper LOL
@@ToTheDirt ohh you actually got it!!! My calculations joke most people just complain!!!! 😎
Literally you say “very reliable” while pointing out that it has broke down at least twice. If you have had two issues in 100 k miles that’s not reliable.
Always gotten me home… never broke down or left me stranded.
That whine sounds terrible
If somebody wanted to spend $10K+ for increased power and decreased reliability compared to a stock 5th gen 4Runner, they might as well wait for the 6th gen to come out in 2025. Hard pass on this.
If you say so! I, and many others disagree but to each their own.
